Ukrainian President Volodyrmyr Zelenskyy seen on March 10, 2022.

  • Russian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is seeking aid from Russian conscripts.
  • He's urged them to "sabotage" Russian forces and report intel to Ukrainian forces.
  • Zelenskyy also urged Russians to surrender and guaranteed their safety.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is moving to overtake Russia from the inside out.

Russia's seven-month effort to conquer its neighbor, Ukraine, has recently been marked by a partial military mobilization, the country's first since World War II, NBC News reported.

Russian President Vladimir Putin's mobilization effort impacts 300,000 reservists — many of whom are going to great lengths to avoid being drafted. Some have even headed to the border, despite facing up to 10 years in prison for desertion.

In a video address late on Friday Ukraine time, Zelenskyy said he seeks to "sabotage" Russia's unprovoked efforts to conquer the country.

"If you get into the Russian army, then sabotage any enemy activity, interfere with any Russian operations, give us all important information about the occupiers: their bases, headquarters, ammunition depots," Zelenskyy said, addressing Russsian conscripts.

The mobilization effort comes after Ukrainian forces reclaimed much of Kharkiv, pushing Russian troops to hide amongst locals or retreat.

Russian troops are reportedly demoralized as their numbers wane.  The Pentagon estimates Russian forces have faced anywhere between 70,000 and 80,000 casualties. Many Russians have grown to condemn the war as protests — and more than 1,000 arrests — ensue across the country.

In a Saturday address, Zelenskyy urged Russian forces to surrender, guaranteeing their safety.

"It is better to surrender to Ukrainian captivity than to be killed by the strikes of our weapons, absolutely fair strikes, as Ukraine defends itself in this war. We defend the brightest — we defend our lives, our children, our freedom," he said, according to his website.

"Russian commanders do not care about the lives of Russians — they just need to replenish the empty spaces left by the dead, wounded, those who fled or the Russian soldiers that were captured," the Ukrainian President added.

British and US officials argue that Putin's latest war efforts — including the mobilization effort and threatening the use of nuclear weapons — could mean his invasion is not going as planned.

Game of Thrones season 8: Arya Stark’s weapon’s purpose revealed in season 6 clue? https://briefnews.eu/game-of-thrones-season-8-arya-starks-weapons-purpose-revealed-in-season-6-clue/ https://briefnews.eu/game-of-thrones-season-8-arya-starks-weapons-purpose-revealed-in-season-6-clue/#respond Mon, 22 Apr 2019 12:04:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/game-of-thrones-season-8-arya-starks-weapons-purpose-revealed-in-season-6-clue/

The first episode of the final season of Game of Thrones saw Arya Stark (played by Maisie Williams) give Gendry (Joe Dempsie) a drawing of the weapon she wanted.

The drawing showed a staff Arya wanted to be able to break into two parts, complete with a spear made from Dragonglass at one end and another blade at the other.

The second instalment saw the blacksmith present her with it, and some fans have been reminded of another weapon Arya has dealt with.

As fans of the HBO series will remember, Arya went to join the Faceless Men in season five where she met the Waif (Faye Marsay).

The Waif carried a staff that she used to hit Arya with and the Stark girl also learned to fight with it herself.

Fans have pointed out the resemblance between Gendry’s creation and the staff used by the Waif.

“Arya’s new weapon seems… familiar,” wrote Reddit user RonnieBear87 alongside a photo of the Waif holding the weapon.

Arya was blinded as she fought the Waif with the staff and some viewers think this is why she may have ordered Gendry to make her something with a similar design.

The Battle of Winterfell is approaching and it’s likely Arya could be blinded by the elements if a blizzard sets in.

On top of that, if she finds herself in total darkness, Arya has the skills to defend herself due to her experience.

She ultimately managed to kill the Waif because she lured her to her hideout in the sixth season and cut out the lights.

One fan replied to the theory suggesting it could be foreshadowing a fight in the blackout for Arya and a White Walker.

Reddit user ProgrammerNextDoor asked: “Is this foreshadowing her fighting some white walker in the dark?”

While BigBacon87 theorised: “She’s gonna lead the white walkers into the crypt and then it’s lights out.”

After Gendry handed the weapon over to Arya, the situation took a steamy turn.

‘No existing countermeasures’ to Russian hypersonic weapons, US govt. report admits https://briefnews.eu/no-existing-countermeasures-to-russian-hypersonic-weapons-us-govt-report-admits/ https://briefnews.eu/no-existing-countermeasures-to-russian-hypersonic-weapons-us-govt-report-admits/#respond Tue, 18 Dec 2018 04:47:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/no-existing-countermeasures-to-russian-hypersonic-weapons-us-govt-report-admits/ The US is currently unable to repel an attack from the hypersonic weapons that are being developed by Russia and China, as they can pierce most missile defense systems, a recent US government report has revealed.

“China and Russia are pursuing hypersonic weapons because their speed, altitude, and maneuverability may defeat most missile defense systems, and they may be used to improve long-range conventional and nuclear strike capabilities,” the report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) reads.

The report also highlights the challenges to American security posed by Chinese and Russian anti-satellite weapons and stealth aircraft that “could fly faster, carry advanced weapons, and achieve further distances.” The rapid development of the cutting-edge technology “could force US aircraft to operate at father distances and put more US targets at risk,” the report notes.

Speaking at a Valdai Club session in October, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia surpassed its rivals in terms of hypersonic weapons, calling Russia’s prevalence in the field “an obvious fact.”

“Nobody has precise hypersonic weapons. Some plan to test theirs in 18 to 24 months. We have them in service already,” Putin said.

In March Putin unveiled several advanced weapons systems, including the Avangard hypersonic glider warheads and the Kinzhal –or Dagger– hypersonic cruise missile. The Kinzhal can fly at Mach-10 speed and has a reported range of 2,000 km (1243 miles). It was reported that Russia’s advanced Sukhoi Su-57 jet might soon be armed with a missile similar to the Kinzhal.

While the Avangard is about to enter military service, the Kinzhal has already been deployed with the force.

Faced with the unmatched hypersonic capabilities, the Pentagon has launched about a dozen programs to protect the US from hypersonic weapons. A project named ‘Glide Breaker’ to develop an interceptor capable of neutralizing incoming hypersonic gliders has been in the works with The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

Russian ships used weapons to stop & seize Ukrainian vessels violating territorial waters – FSB https://briefnews.eu/russian-ships-used-weapons-to-stop-seize-ukrainian-vessels-violating-territorial-waters-fsb/ https://briefnews.eu/russian-ships-used-weapons-to-stop-seize-ukrainian-vessels-violating-territorial-waters-fsb/#respond Sun, 25 Nov 2018 21:56:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/russian-ships-used-weapons-to-stop-seize-ukrainian-vessels-violating-territorial-waters-fsb/

Russia has confirmed its vessels have used weapons to stop Ukrainian vessels that had entered Russian waters in the Black Sea illegally. Three Ukrainian sailors were wounded and have been given medical assistance.

Russia has fired at a group of three Ukrainian vessels that entered its territorial waters near Crimea, the Russian Security Service (FSB) has confirmed. The ships have been now been seized.

Three Ukrainian sailors, injured in the altercation, were given medical assistance by Russian servicemen. Their lives are out of danger.

Ukrainian Navy ships the ‘Berdiansk’, the ‘Nikopol’ and the ‘Yany Kapu’ with their crews have been detained for violating Russian territorial waters, the FSB said in a statement Sunday. They were ignoring “legal demands to stop” and “performing dangerous maneuvers,” and the Russian warships had to open fire to force them to stop.

A criminal investigation has been launched into the suspected violation of the Russian state border.

The FSB is pointing out that Ukrainian authorities are aware of the procedure that regulates the passage of the military ships through Russian territorial waters.

US senators seek to stop weapons sales to Saudi Arabia over Yemen war, Khashoggi murder https://briefnews.eu/us-senators-seek-to-stop-weapons-sales-to-saudi-arabia-over-yemen-war-khashoggi-murder/ https://briefnews.eu/us-senators-seek-to-stop-weapons-sales-to-saudi-arabia-over-yemen-war-khashoggi-murder/#respond Thu, 15 Nov 2018 23:36:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-senators-seek-to-stop-weapons-sales-to-saudi-arabia-over-yemen-war-khashoggi-murder/ A newly proposed bill in the US Senate would suspend the sale of weapons to Saudi Arabia and block refueling of Saudi warplanes bombing Yemen, as punishment for the death of a Washington Post columnist.

A group of senators on the Foreign Relations Committee, led by Bob Menendez (D-New Jersey) and Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) introduced the “Saudi Arabia Accountability and Yemen Act of 2018.” It was sponsored by three Democrats and two Republicans.

Menendez, who is the top Democrat on the committee, said that sanctions against 17 Saudi nationals introduced earlier on Thursday by the Trump administration were “not enough” to ensure a credible investigation of the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, and pressure Riyadh into ending the war in Yemen.

“This legislation is an important way to hold Saudi Arabia accountable for various acts in Yemen as well as the death of Jamal Khashoggi,” said Graham.

“We are putting teeth behind these demands with regular oversight, sanctions and suspension of weapons sales and refueling support,” Menendez said.

The US currently supplies Saudi Arabia with billions of dollars’ worth of tanks, airplanes and ammunition, and offers in-flight refueling and other logistical support to the Saudi-led coalition operating in Yemen. Riyadh has waged war on its southern neighbor since March 2015, to overthrow the Houthi-led government, which Saudi Arabia accuses of being a proxy of Iran.

The bill introduced by Menendez and Graham would also impose US sanctions on anyone blocking humanitarian aid deliveries to Yemen, but also on anyone providing support to the Houthis.

Khashoggi, a Saudi journalist who lived in Turkey and was an outspoken critic of the Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was last seen entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2. Turkey quickly accused the Saudis of murdering Khashoggi, which Riyadh spent weeks denying until it eventually blamed it on a “fight” inside the consulate.

Earlier on Thursday, the Senate voted 77-21 to kill a proposal by Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) to block US arms sales to Bahrain, another member of the Saudi coalition. Menendez led the opposition to Paul’s proposal, arguing that Bahrain is a “critical ally” of the US and hosts the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet, and that the sale of multiple rocket launchers and missile systems had nothing to do with the war in Yemen.

Pentagon Weapons Systems Are Easy Cyberattack Targets, New Report Finds https://briefnews.eu/pentagon-weapons-systems-are-easy-cyberattack-targets-new-report-finds/ https://briefnews.eu/pentagon-weapons-systems-are-easy-cyberattack-targets-new-report-finds/#respond Wed, 10 Oct 2018 14:57:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pentagon-weapons-systems-are-easy-cyberattack-targets-new-report-finds/ A new report says the Department of Defense “likely has an entire generation of systems that were designed and built without adequately considering cybersecurity.”

Report: US weapons systems are highly vulnerable to cyber attacks https://briefnews.eu/report-us-weapons-systems-are-highly-vulnerable-to-cyber-attacks/ https://briefnews.eu/report-us-weapons-systems-are-highly-vulnerable-to-cyber-attacks/#respond Wed, 10 Oct 2018 11:59:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/report-us-weapons-systems-are-highly-vulnerable-to-cyber-attacks/

The Department of Defense will have to ramp up its cybersecurity efforts now that it’s planning to spend $ 1.66 trillion to develop major weapons systems. According to a new report (PDF) by the Government Accountability Office, nearly all of Pentagon’s weapons systems are vulnerable to cyberattacks. The DoD, the report reads, didn’t make cybersecurity a priority, even though GAO has been warning it for decades about the risks it’s taking by not making sure its systems are properly protected. That leaves the nation’s weapons, such missiles and drones, susceptible to attacks meant to take over their controls.

By request from the Senate Armed Services Committee, GAO assessed the department’s readiness to deal with cyberattacks by looking at cybersecurity tests conducted on its weapons systems from 2012 to 2017. It found that testers were routinely able to infiltrate and commandeer the weapons systems they’re testing. In at least one case, they were able to find the correct administrator password in nine seconds, because the DoD never bothered changing the default. All the testers had to do was look it up on the internet. Further, they were able to operate undetected — the other testers meant to fend them off were unable to do so.

GAO also believes that the Pentagon doesn’t know how bad its vulnerability issues truly are, because the tests were limited in scope. In addition, most of the vulnerabilities the tests unearthed remain unresolved. The Pentagon only addressed one of 20 identified vulnerabilities, and even though officials found solutions for some of them, they were never implemented “for some reason.” While there could multiple factors that contribute to DoD’s lack of action, one of them is losing its best workers to the private sector. The department doesn’t have the budget to match the salaries private companies offer top cybersecurity experts, whom it needs to be able to detect and combat advanced/state-sponsored cyber threats against the government.

US warns Syria response will be ‘stronger’ than ever before if Assad uses chemical weapons again https://briefnews.eu/us-warns-syria-response-will-be-stronger-than-ever-before-if-assad-uses-chemical-weapons-again/ https://briefnews.eu/us-warns-syria-response-will-be-stronger-than-ever-before-if-assad-uses-chemical-weapons-again/#respond Tue, 11 Sep 2018 01:01:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-warns-syria-response-will-be-stronger-than-ever-before-if-assad-uses-chemical-weapons-again/ Damascus skies erupt with surface to air missile fire as the U.S. launches an attack on Syria targeting different parts of the Syrian capital Damascus, Syria, early Saturday, April 14, 2018.AP Photo/Hassan Ammar

  • White House National Security Adviser John Bolton warned Syria on Monday that any use of chemical weapons against the Syrian people will result in a “much stronger response” than those following two previous incidents.
  • The warning comes as Syrian, Russian, and pro-regime forces surround Idlib, the last rebel stronghold and the final obstacle for the Syrian government led by brutal Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the deadly civil war.
  • Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Dunford said over the weekend that the Pentagon is already preparing military options should President Donald Trump order a military response to the use of chemical weapons.
  • Both the Pentagon and the White House have stressed that the response to any use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime will be swift.

President Donald Trump’s national security adviser issued a crystal clear warning to Syria on Monday, stressing that if the Syrian regime uses chemical weapons again, it will face a “much stronger” response than before.

“We’ve tried to convey the message in recent days that if there’s a third use of chemical weapons, the response will be much stronger,” White House National Security Adviser John Bolton said Monday, “I can say we have been in consultations with the British and the French who have joined us in the second strike, and they also agree that another use of chemical weapons will result in a much stronger response.”

Bolton promises ‘much stronger’ response if chemical weapons used in Syria https://briefnews.eu/bolton-promises-much-stronger-response-if-chemical-weapons-used-in-syria/ https://briefnews.eu/bolton-promises-much-stronger-response-if-chemical-weapons-used-in-syria/#respond Mon, 10 Sep 2018 18:03:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bolton-promises-much-stronger-response-if-chemical-weapons-used-in-syria/ US national security adviser John Bolton has warned that the US, France and UK will launch a ‘much stronger’ response to any chemical weapons attack in Syria, as the US bolsters its regional military presence in preparation.

“We’ve tried to convey the message in recent days that if there’s a third use of chemical weapons, the response will be much stronger,” Bolton told reporters on Monday.

Bolton’s statement comes as tensions around Idlib are rising. Idlib is the last redoubt of terrorist groups including Jabhat al-Nusra and some offshoots of Al Qaeda.

Bolton’s words echo his earlier warnings in August that the US would respond “very strongly” if Assad’s forces were to use chemical weapons in a bit to retake Idlib. Previously, an alleged chemical weapons attack in the town of Douma, 10km north of the capital, Damascus, was used as pretext for American, British, and French airstrikes against Syrian government targets in April, while an attack in the northern city of Khan Shaykhun in 2017 was also blamed on Assad, and triggered a US missile attack in response.

Now, Bolton claims that the US, Britain and France are in agreement that a fresh attack would call for more severe retaliation.

“I can say we’ve been in consultation with the British and the French, who joined us in the second strike, and they also agree that another use of chemical weapons will result in a much stronger response,” he said on Monday.

The Russian Ministry of Defense warned on Sunday that terrorist groups, including Jabhat Al-Nusra and the infamous White Helmets, are preparing to stage a chemical attack to give the Western coalition a pretext to strike Assad again.

Russia has repeatedly issued the same warning over the past weeks, and has submitted what Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov says are “concrete facts” about an impending false-flag chemical attack to the US government, the UN, and the OPCW (Organization for the Prevention of Chemical Weapons). The Russian government claims that chlorine gas canisters have already been put in place in Idlib for use in the attack.

As if waiting for such an attack, the US has been bolstering its presence in the region recently. Three US destroyers and four nuclear submarines have been deployed to the eastern Mediterranean, and US forces launched an air-assault exercise in southern Syria backed by artillery fire over the weekend.

In addition, USS ‘The Sullivans,’ armed with 56 cruise missiles, was also sent the Persian Gulf, and B1-B supersonic bombers have been relocated to the US airbase in Qatar earlier this year.

In Washington, President Trump is reportedly in “routine dialog” with the Pentagon over his military options in Syria, while the US’ allies, Britain and France, have also confirmed their readiness to attack Syria in the event of a chemical attack.
