Phillip Schofield, 57, was joined by his This Morning co-host Holly Willoughby for the show’s mid-week programme and they welcomed vegan restaurant owner Lucy Watson and farmer Abi Reader to debate the new Tesco advert. With the latter expressing discomfort for the way the advertisement was worded, the former Made In Chelsea star moved onto the ethics of meat products, leading the ITV presenter to step in.

The latest advert from Tesco to promote meat-free alternatives sees a young girl arrive home from school and tell her father, “I don’t want to eat animals any more.”

Although the character admits “I love my meat,” he goes on to prepare a casserole for his daughter with the inclusion of Tesco’s Plant Chef Meat-Free Cumberland-style Sausages.

It has left viewers divided over turning a beef product into a meat-free alternative, with both guests on the show offering opposing opinions.

Feeling strongly about the ethics on how meat products are created, Lucy expressed her views with Phillip interjecting to try and balance the debate.

Explaining her concerns over the meat industry and why the advert is a good thing, the guest said: “I think it gives children an inset perception of meat because I feel a lot of children are brought up not actually knowing what they’re eating.

“I didn’t know what I was eating for a long time.

“It was only because I moved to a farm and I realised the animals were going off to be killed, I then put two and two together, not even then being told I was eating animals.

“We’re taught as children to love animals and to care for them.”

“And most children do love animals and if they knew they were getting brutally slaughtered to eat, I think they’d be quite shocked,” she continued.

Stepping in, Phillip told her: “I think many farmers, obviously this is a very contentious issue, using the word “brutal” …”

As he tried to continue, Lucy said over the top of him: “They have their throats slit,” to which the presenter argued the opposing view.

“That’s not necessarily the common practice,” Phillip commented, to which the guest strongly disagreed as he told him: “It is common practice.”

Phillip continued: “They’re dead first,” with Lucy once agin expressing her opposing view to the issue.

The host cut the discussion on the matter to get back to the debate about the advert, telling the vegan restaurant owner: “We can’t get into a conversation about the techniques here.”

Although she was shut down, Lucy agreed with the host the debate was focussed on the advert.

Lucy questioned Abi earlier in the interview about how the cattle are handled, asking: ‘Is it true about 70 percent of the farms in the UK are actually factory farms which everyone knows is extremely cruel?”

The farmer replied: “No, I’ve not heard that statistic. I am one of your average farmers. I’m not a factory farm.

“What is the definition of a factory farm?” she asked the vegan campaigner.

Restaurant owner Lucy said: “Well, when they’re enclosed in horrendous conditions and don’t see the light of day for their whole lives.”

Abi assured her fellow guest, telling her: “I would be amazed if there were many farms in the UK that did not see the light of day.”

‘We are coming’: Chilling Blackwater ad triggers fears of Trump seeking to privatize Mideast wars https://briefnews.eu/we-are-coming-chilling-blackwater-ad-triggers-fears-of-trump-seeking-to-privatize-mideast-wars/ https://briefnews.eu/we-are-coming-chilling-blackwater-ad-triggers-fears-of-trump-seeking-to-privatize-mideast-wars/#respond Wed, 26 Dec 2018 04:12:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/we-are-coming-chilling-blackwater-ad-triggers-fears-of-trump-seeking-to-privatize-mideast-wars/

Blackwater, the controversial US private security company, has flagged its intent to resume business, taking out a full-page commercial in the latest edition of Recoil magazine with a chilling message declaring “We are coming”

The resurrection within the military contractors’ market of notorious Blackwater, which, after numerous scandals and several rebrandings, is now known as Academi, has analysts looking deeper into US intent to withdraw from the wars in the Middle East. The advertisement in Recoil, made public after Defense Secretary Jim Mattis announced his resignation, prompted concerns that president Donald Trump might be seeking to privatize ongoing American engagements in Afghanistan and Syria, following the declared troops’ withdrawal from the region.

The main supporter of the idea of privatizing the US fighting in the Middle East has been Erik Prince, the former head of Blackwater. The longtime Republican sold the company in 2010 but has maintained communications with Trump, reportedly trying to lobby his inner circle to replace the US military presence in the region with mercenaries. Mattis, who served in the Persian Gulf War, Afghanistan and Iraq, firmly rejected the idea.

Trump has basically fired the very people who told him that it would not work and not to do it.

“With Mattis now gone it is conceivable that Trump now may reevaluate” Prince’s proposal, Michael Maloof, former Pentagon security analyst, told RT.

Whether or not outsourcing US wars to a private contractor will have any positive affect on the ground remains to be seen, Maloof explained, stressing that a “three private military contractors for one US soldier” ratio currently set up in Syria and Afghanistan has failed to achieve much.

“Erik Prince is very close to Trump,” the analyst pointed out, but “he would have to bring very traumatic force and it’s going to cost money and Erik Prince is getting paid by the US government.”

The prospects of Blackwater’s return to the mercenary market has distressed those few among American public who remember the notorious murder of 14 Iraqi civilians by the company’s guards in 2007 in Nisour Square, Baghdad.

“I don’t think the American public would stand for a company that has committed so many crimes in the past,” political activist, Medea Benjamin told RT. “Erik Price and mercenaries make money by continuing wars, not ending them.”

‘We have far more bullets’: Trump threatens China with more tariffs if Beijing dares to retaliate https://briefnews.eu/we-have-far-more-bullets-trump-threatens-china-with-more-tariffs-if-beijing-dares-to-retaliate/ https://briefnews.eu/we-have-far-more-bullets-trump-threatens-china-with-more-tariffs-if-beijing-dares-to-retaliate/#respond Sat, 22 Sep 2018 02:11:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/we-have-far-more-bullets-trump-threatens-china-with-more-tariffs-if-beijing-dares-to-retaliate/ Donald Trump has threatened to impose even more tariffs on Chinese goods if Beijing dares to impose tit-for-tat measures in response to Washington’s latest package of levies targeting some $ 200 billion of Chinese exports.

Trump has cautioned the world’s second-largest economy to think twice before engaging in a trade war in which, he claims, the US has “more bullets.”

China tariffs hammer drops: Trump announces new duties on $ 200bn worth of Chinese goods

“We’re going to go $ 200 billion at 25 percent on Chinese made goods. And we will come back with more if they retaliate. We have a lot more to come back with,” Trump told a packed rally in Missouri for Republican Senate candidate Josh Hawley.

“We are cracking down on the unfair trade practices of China… We have rebuilt China. We have given them such wealth. And we are changing it,” Trump told the cheering crowd. “So we charged 25 percent on $ 50 billion worth of merchandise tariffs coming in. And then they said, ‘We’re going to do the same thing’. And I’ve said: ‘That is okay. We have far more bullets’.”

China said it will institute new tariffs on US goods worth $ 60 billion from September 24, after the US administration slapped new levies on Beijing’s exports.

While both the Chinese and US measures are set to go into effect Monday, Trump previously noted that the initial 10 percent tariffs would rise to 25 percent on January 1, 2019. The world’s two largest economic superpowers have already applied tariffs on $ 50 billion of each other’s imports.

While the US keeps accusing China of refusing to buy American products to maintain a “fair” trade balance, Beijing is complaining that Washington’s protectionist practices are detrimental to the entire global economy – and has even taken up the issue with the World Trade Organization.

Yet, despite Beijing’s willingness to negotiate some kind of a deal to stop the escalation of the trade war, the White House is trying to coerce their partner into submission. In a separate slap on the wrist, just days after announcing the new $ 200bn levies, the Trump administration introduced sanctions against China’s leading arms acquisition body and its director, over the purchase of Russian Su-35 multi-role fighters and S-400 missile defense systems. Beijing immediately hit back at the US administration, urging it “to remedy the mistake and cancel the sanctions” which forbid arms export licenses and foreign exchange transactions under US jurisdiction.

‘We crashed, but it's OK’: Passenger records dramatic VIDEO after airliner skids into river https://briefnews.eu/we-crashed-but-its-ok-passenger-records-dramatic-video-after-airliner-skids-into-river/ https://briefnews.eu/we-crashed-but-its-ok-passenger-records-dramatic-video-after-airliner-skids-into-river/#respond Sat, 01 Sep 2018 08:52:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/we-crashed-but-its-ok-passenger-records-dramatic-video-after-airliner-skids-into-river/

A passenger recorded a short video after a Russian Boeing 787 slid off a runway in Sochi, crashing into a river and catching fire on both wings.

“We crashed, but it’s OK, I guess,” a man can be heard calmly saying in a short clip recorded minutes after the airliner crashed into a river in the southern Russian city of Sochi. The video shows flames blazing in the night, and some people can be heard shouting at the background.

The incident happened on Saturday after the plane skidded off a runway during a late-night emergency landing. All 166 people on board survived, the Health Ministry said, adding that 18 passengers, including several children, received injuries.

The only fatality of the night was that of an airport employee, who led the first response team. He was rushed to a hospital with heart failure and died en route.

The Gunners boss was conducting his pre-match interview ahead of the away tie at Cardiff.

He was answering a question when a mobile that was put down on the table to record him started ringing.

The Spaniard looked puzzled for a minute before asking: “Is this yours, I don’t know who it is”.

Someone in the background shouted “It’s Ozil, is he playing tomorrow?”

Emery continued: “I am going to answer it.”

He then reveals the caller is a “John Spencer” – could it be the former Chelsea and Scotland striker himself?

He then asks if he can answer it, before those in the room shout their approval and burst into laughter.

And the 46-year-old didn’t disappoint.

He answered, saying: “OK, good morning, good afternoon.

The media were left howling in laughter before Emery shook his head and explained that “John Spencer” had hung up.

It brought some fun to what has being somewhat of a tricky start to life at The Emirates for Emery.

He lost the first two Premier League games, to Man City and Chelsea, before picking up a morale-boosting victory against West Ham.

‘We will take the land by force’: South Africa’s land crisis may explode into racial violence https://briefnews.eu/we-will-take-the-land-by-force-south-africas-land-crisis-may-explode-into-racial-violence/ https://briefnews.eu/we-will-take-the-land-by-force-south-africas-land-crisis-may-explode-into-racial-violence/#respond Thu, 30 Aug 2018 11:49:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/we-will-take-the-land-by-force-south-africas-land-crisis-may-explode-into-racial-violence/ The controversial land-confiscation policy proposed by the Ramaphosa-led ANC government could ignite clashes among South African citizens, who are split into two rival camps on the issue along racial lines.

The new legislation allowing land seizure without compensation, which was proposed by the ruling African National Congress (ANC) as early as 2015 and supported by President Cyril Ramaphosa, is currently on hold pending further review.

The law, if passed, will allow South African authorities to seize lands from white farmers and redistribute them to the country’s black population without any compensation for the owners

The proposed land reform has pitted radical groups among black South Africans ready to take land by force against white farmers who are ready to protect their property.

“We will take the land by force,” Peter Seolela, a member of the Economic Freedom Fighters party, told London-based television channel ITV. “We will not be embarrassed by this. It is our land and we want it now.”

The disputed land reform is an attempt by the South African government to address what they see as continuing injustice in the country, more than two decades after the end of apartheid. The policy of strict racial segregation, by which the country’s white minority held power, was abolished in 1994.

Much of the farmland in South Africa is still owned by the country’s white minority. President Cyril Ramaphosa pledged to answer the frustrations of the landless black majority, vowing to alter the South African constitution, inevitably sparking fears among the country’s white population.

“This land is bought and paid for. I have the title deeds that go back four generations,” said Bernadette Hall, whose husband was reportedly murdered by armed raiders six years ago.

“I lost my husband and now they want to take my farm,” Hall told the media. “I’ve put my blood and my sweat and everything into this. They might as well slit my throat and have done with it.”

Earlier this week, the ANC said the land reform bill had been withdrawn by the Portfolio Committee on Public Works pending further study, but reiterated its commitment to pursue the controversial program.

Trump: ‘We won’t let’ discrimination of conservatives on social media happen https://briefnews.eu/trump-we-wont-let-discrimination-of-conservatives-on-social-media-happen/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-we-wont-let-discrimination-of-conservatives-on-social-media-happen/#respond Sat, 18 Aug 2018 16:27:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trump-we-wont-let-discrimination-of-conservatives-on-social-media-happen/ US President Donald Trump has spoken out about censorship against conservatives on social media, saying it is a “very dangerous thing” and calling for everyone to be allowed to participate in the online conversation.

“Social media is totally discriminating against Republican/conservative voices. Speaking loudly and clearly for the Trump administration, we won’t let that happen. They are closing down the opinions of many people on the RIGHT, while at the same time doing nothing to others,” Trump wrote.

He went on to call censorship a “very dangerous thing,” while taking the opportunity to slam “fake news.”

“There is nothing so fake as CNN & MSNBC, and yet I do not ask that their sick behavior be removed…”

Trump also questioned “who is making the choices” regarding who gets removed from social media, adding that “mistakes are being made.”

“Let everybody participate, good and bad, and we will all just have to figure it out!” he wrote.

It comes just days after several journalists raised alarm at what they say are baseless complaints sent to Twitter over stories with sensitive topics – including the activities of British spy Christopher Steele and links between Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and China.

Meanwhile, many conservatives recently became outraged when Twitter and Facebook suspended controversial right-wing host Alex Jones of Infowars over so-called “hate speech.”

© Kevin Lamarque / Reuters

That decision was defended by Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, who told The Hill earlier this week that Jones had been posting content that broke Twitter’s terms of service.

Twitter has also acknowledged that a new policy to suppress hate speech has resulted in the search results of some Republican lawmakers being reduced. The company did, however, add that some Democrats have also been affected. On Friday, liberal Australian journalist Caitlin Johnstone was removed from Twitter after tweeting that “the world will be improved” when Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), who is battling brain cancer, “finally dies.”

As for Facebook, which recently came under fire for suspending the pages of TeleSur and independent sites Venezuelanalysis.com and Haitianalysis.blogspot.com, the social network stated in May that it will be launching a review of anti-conservative bias on the platform.

Trump’s most recent tweets aren’t the first time he’s spoken out against the alleged censoring of conservatives on social media. In July, he said the so-called “shadow banning” of prominent Republicans on Twitter is “discriminatory and illegal.” The term ‘shadow banning’ refers to a situation when a social media user believes they have full access to a platform but other users are prevented from seeing their accounts or messages.

Croatia reached world football’s premier match with a 2-1 extra time win over England at Luzhniki Stadium on Wednesday to set up a final showdown with France at the same stadium on Sunday.

“We followed the game over dinner,” Grabar-Kitarovic said as she entered the last sessions of the NATO summit early Thursday, AP reported.

“It was wonderful because all the allies were cheering for all of us, mostly,” she added, before giving her forecast: “This will be a successful summit and we will win on Sunday.”

Grabar-Kitarovic, who sat at the table together with French President Emmanuel Macron and was photographed at the event with US president Donald Trump, has every right to feel assured of success.

Croatia captain Luka Modric and his men overcame a 1-0 scoreline provided by an early Kieran Trippier free kick with a second half equalizer from Ivan Perisic and a 109th minute winner from striker Mario Mandzukic.

President Grabar-Kitarovic previously made headlines when she was snapped in the stands at Fisht Stadium in Sochi wearing a Croatia national team jersey at the match versus hosts Russia on Sunday.

Although Russia’s prime minister Dmitry Medvedev looked less than impressed in the same VIP box, the Balkan nation prevailed by a 4-3 penalty scoreline after the match ended 2-2 in normal time.

France reached the match by virtue of a 1-0 win over Belgium in St. Petersburg, cementing their third final in 20 years since winning the trophy at their home World Cup in 1998.
