Waze is playing even more nicely with Apple after it enabled CarPlay support back in September. The latest version of its iOS app lets you use Siri Shortcuts to find your way to a destination. You’ll be able to set up shortcuts for things like your morning commute, the drive home and directions to your favorite places.

The benefits of using voice control for navigation while driving are fairly obvious, and Waze’s addition of Siri Shortcuts offers users more of an alternative to Apple Maps. The update will surely come as a boon for those who use it to steer clear of traffic, crashes and construction. However, it might not help you steer clear of police checkpoints in future after the NYPD asked Waze’s owner Google to remove them from the app.

You won’t have to use Google Maps if you want a built-in music player to accompany Google’s navigation tools. In the wake of a Spotify tie-in last year, Waze has released beta versions of its Android and iOS apps with a native audio player that supports eight services in total. Deezer, iHeart Radio, NPR One, Pandora, Scribd, Stitcher and TuneIn are now available alongside Spotify to give you a choice of listening material for your commute. Not every app is available on every platform (you can use TuneIn only on Android, for example, while Deezer only works on iOS), but you only need to sync Waze with a third-party app to have access to familiar tunes on your next drive.

The feature should reach the standard Waze apps “in the coming weeks.”

You’ll still need to turn to Google Maps if you want to play Apple Music or Google Play Music during your commute. If that’s not an issue, though, this might be an ideal commuting companion. You’ll get Waze’s crowdsourced traffic alerts alongside the music, radio and podcasts you might need to make the trip vaguely bearable.

From Bluetooth syncing to systems like CarPlay and Android Auto, the link between your smartphone and car grows closer every day. Today, Ford announced that its Sync 3 infotainment system will now have full Waze integration, meaning you can natively use the community-based traffic and navigation app in Ford vehicles. While we knew that has been in the works for months, the app can now be used with hands-free voice controls.

Waze integration comes courtesy of Ford Sync AppLink, an open-source system that allows developers to create apps that run in infotainment systems. Although Ford is the main proponent and developer, AppLink is available for any automaker to use. The goal was to make it easy for developers to create one app that works across a range of makes and models. One of the most notable apps is Amazon Alexa. Users can control smart home functions right from their car.

You’ll need SYNC 3 software version 3.0 or greater, iOS 11.3 on your iPhone, and of course you’ll need the Waze app on your phone, too.

Now, there are a number of drawbacks and stipulations. Most notably, this currently only works for Apple. Android users like myself are out of luck for the moment. The system isn’t wireless either, so you’ll need to plug your phone in using the car’s USB port. Still, for those heavy Waze users with iPhones, being able to navigate traffic using just voice commands should be a big boon.

In the wake of complaints about Waze and similar smartphone traffic apps routing through the smaller streets of Los Angeles, one city councilman has decided to dig in and figure out what he can do about it.

Paul Krekorian recently contacted Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez after Lopez described earlier this month how some apps (notably, Waze) route Angeleno drivers over Baxter Street, which features a 32-percent grade street that dates back to the 19th century.

Numerous apps’ traffic algorithms seem to not take into account that Baxter’s unusual configuration, according to local residents, may result in more auto accidents.

Ford is updating its Sync infotainment software with a few new navigation options. Sygic is a name we haven’t heard in quite awhile, but the GPS company will bring its voice assistant to certain Ford vehicles. If your blue-oval-clad ride has Sync 3 and you’ve got Sygic’s nav app installed on your phone, you’ll be able to press a button on your steering wheel to activate Sygic’s new voice-powered Driving Assistant. According to TechCrunch, you can ask Driving Assistant for traffic info, gas prices and parking advice, among other tasks. It sounds quite a bit easier than using voice commands while driving with Siri, or fiddling with your car’s infotainment screen.

Like TC notes, Sygic’s navigation app has worked with Sync since last year. If you’re already a Sygic fan, this is great news. But what if you prefer Waze? You’re covered there as well. This April, TC reports that iOS users will be able to link the app with Sync 3 vehicles via AppLink. Sure you could always use Apple Maps or Google Maps, but neither of those allow Liam Neeson to get you out of a traffic jam with his particular set of skills.

One of the developments we’ve most appreciated in this new age of touchscreens and complex infotainment systems is phone integration in the form of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Being able to use those simple interfaces natively on the vehicle screen is fantastic. Now Ford is adding the navigation app Waze to the list of applications that work this way. This means that maps and other information will display on the car’s screen, with the various functions controlled by touch. You will also be able to use the car’s voice controls to operate Waze.

As for why you might want to use Waze, the app displays real-time traffic conditions and directions like many other navigation apps. But it also lets users add information from trips, so you can see information on construction, road hazards, speed traps and gas prices from one app. Besides that, it can be nice to have an option for navigation besides the ones provided with the car or the phone.

Waze compatibility will only be available on Fords equipped with Sync 3 version 3.0. New Fords will already have this, and older Fords with Sync 3 will just need a software update to access the new feature. Using Waze on the infotainment screen also uses Ford’s AppLink system, which only works with iOS devices. Android users shouldn’t despair though, since Sync 3 also supports Android Auto, which already allows you to use Waze on the car’s screen. So now you can pick from Ford’s navigation, Apple Maps, Google Maps, or Waze for your navigation needs.

Waze, a smart route-navigation service available for both Android and Apple smartphone users, is one of the most popular phone applications out there. It already had millions of users when Google purchased the company in 2013, and it has only grown in popularity since then. Now Ford is making Waze even simpler to use by integrating compatibility straight into its Sync 3 infotainment system. Unfortunately, a cord is still required.

Waze optimizes route times by navigating users around traffic and alerts them of accidents and speed traps. Until recently, those who preferred it over Google or Apple Maps were limited to using it on their smartphones. That’s no longer the case. Android Auto changed the game when it added Waze into its plug-in infotainment platform, and SmartDeviceLink has led the open-source charge for mirroring smartphone applications on automotive infotainment systems. The SmartDeviceLink developer announcement opened the door for Ford, which announced at CES 2018 in Las Vegas that it is getting in on the fun.

Ford claims it is the first major manufacturer to integrate Waze straight into its own native infotainment system. Once a phone with Waze is plugged in, it will automatically display on the Ford Sync 3–equipped screen with full functionality, including voice commands and touchscreen controls. The feature will become available “in the coming weeks” on all 2018 Ford models, the automaker said, while older Ford vehicles equipped with Sync 3 will be able to receive an over-the-air update that will incorporate the new features and Waze compatibility.

This announcement should come as great news to Apple users. Until now, they could use Waze on their smartphone screens while driving, which admittedly can be distracting and inconvenient. But when it’s a choice between using Waze on your smartphone or using Apple Maps or a native manufacturer navigation app (both of which trail Waze’s timely crowdsourced traffic and routing information) on a bigger infotainment screen, there are a lot of reasons to prefer Waze.

Ford might be the first, but don’t expect it to be alone for long. Toyota also has been rumored to be working toward adding the technology soon, and if Ford and Toyota are doing it, other manufacturers will likely add the feature in the near future. Those two automakers belong to the SmartDeviceLink consortium, as do Mazda, Subaru, and others, and seem like strong contenders to add this functionality.
