<em><a target="_blank" href="http://rocketcatgames.com/wayward/">Wayward Souls</a></em> is an action RPG with a story to tell &#8211; or rather one different story for each of its seven playable characters. Driven towards the dungeon delving life out of different motivations, you start your adventure in a dark, dank cellar and make your way upwards, hacking and slashing and collecting coins. And if you die? Well, someone out there will remember you.</p>

<p><em>Wayward Souls</em> was actually released as a mobile game a couple of years ago and we previously covered it <a target="_blank" href="http://indiegames.com/2014/04/wayward_souls_dungeon_crawl.html">here</a>. This port not only brings it to the PC, but only expands on it, adding bugfixes, a rework of several mechanics, and other things. Of course, the core gameplay stays the same: you battle your way through randomly generated dungeon layouts with 16-bit graphics, fight bosses every couple of floors, and collect a ton of fancy hats. Yes, hats.</p>
<p>One of the game&#8217;s neat features is the ability to leave a gravestone with a message for the next player. Even better, you can then bless or curse your grave, which is supposed to help or hinder whoever finds your remains. (Right now, this works for Steam friends, but it would be nice to encounter the graves of random people as well.)</p>
<p>Each character has their own set of moves and previously collected coins can be spent on upgrading them, which means that every run brings you one step closer to your goal. Getting there is not an easy feat, mind, so you&#8217;ll need all the coins you can get and a lot of practice to boot.</p>
<p>The PC version just started its stint in Early Access, and there are a few things that could certainly be improved upon, such as the movement mechanics (you can move diagonally, but you can only attack straight, which feels odd) or the way the game handles health regeneration (health potions are exceedingly rare). Still, this is basically a complete game already, and it&#8217;s well worth your time.</p>

<p>Those are just some of the questions keeping us awake at night (well, the first two anyway — we’re not losing sleep over <em>The Gong Show</em>.) The fate of nearly a dozen series continue to hang in the balance as the clock ticks closer to 2018, and there are indications that the TV networks may keep fans on pins and needles well into the new year.&nbsp;

<p>In the backdoor pilot — penned by co-showrunner Andrew Dabb and writer Robert Berens — Sheriff Jody Mills (played by Kim Rhodes) and a group of troubled young women, all of them orphaned by supernatural tragedy, team up as a supreme monster-fighting force. Teens Claire Novak (Kathryn Newton) and Alex Jones (Katherine Ramdeen) will be joined by psychic Missouri Moseley’s granddaughter Patience Turner (Clark Backo) and newcomer Kaia (Yadira Guevara-Prip), who is introduced in this Thursday’s fall finale.</p>
<p>The group, along with Sheriff Donna Hanscum (Briana Buckmaster), joins forces in the Jan. 18 backdoor pilot to “kick some ass and tell a story that [is] in the <em>Supernatural</em> sphere, but will feel and play as much different than” the mothership series, Dabb described at San Diego Comic-Con.</p>
<p>The offshoot’s found-family has plenty of support from the long-running drama’s stars. “There’s a reason that this [spinoff] is hinging around them: because they were [fan] favorite characters on the show,” leading man Jensen Ackles said during TVLine’s set visit last month. “I know they’re favorite guests of [ours], and when they get to come on the show, it’s really fun for us.”</p>
