Watts joined the Power during last year’s player exchange period, but not before being courted by rival clubs including Geelong and the Sydney Swans.
Now settled at his new club, Watts said his one-time mentor — Roos coached Melbourne from 2014-16 — played a role in helping him decide where to restart his career.
MAX GAWN: I’M A SUPERCOACH ‘NO-BRAINER’
SHOCK JOCK: SEN’S SURPRISE SA RECRUIT
“I’ve stayed in pretty constant contact with Roosy … he actually sent me one of the nicest messages I’ve ever received the other day,” Watts said.
“He’s just a legend and leading into the decision I was actually speaking to him a fair bit.
“We were weighing up our options and I was sort of letting him know what was going on and he sort of thought the same as I did and thought Port Adelaide would be a great move.”
Speaking on SEN, Watts said it “probably would have made a lot more sense to stay in Victoria” but he “couldn’t fault” Port Adelaide.
Power coach Ken Hinkley was also a factor behind his decision to move interstate, the former no.1 draft pick hitting it off with the Port leader who himself re-signed to a longer-term deal with the club.
“Kenny is just so personable and it’s more about that relationship with the player than anything else,” Watts said.
“You work on that first and then the rest comes, the football will take care of itself.
“That’s what I really liked about Kenny.”
As for his new role at Port, Watts said he was settling into the Power forward line and ready to “play my role”, helping deliver the footy to the likes of Charlie Dixon and Robbie Gray.
And he’s quickly warmed to his new teammates in the change rooms at Alberton.
“Early on you sort of suss out the cheeky ones, the fun ones — I’ll usually try to sort of nestle in there somewhere — so that’s like the Sammy Grays, the Dougal Howards, Ollie Wines,” he said.
“He (Wines) sort of blew me away, I thought he was going to be a bit of a stiff, but he’s just a legend and has a good time and then works super hard out on the track.
“I think that’s what sort of captured me about the group, they’re all so welcoming and friendly.”

Tesla drivers who used to drag Porsche Turbos can once again exploit their explosive acceleration, but only thanks to a Model S owner in Mesa, Arizona.
–
The man, who chooses to remain unnamed, has chronicled his frustration with Tesla since mid-May, when he posted a letter from the Arizona attorney general’s office on the Tesla Motors Club forum. His complaint, well known among Tesla drivers—including ourselves as testers of a long-term Model S—was a sudden and significant drop in motor power when accelerating in Insane or Ludicrous modes. It was enough for the man to file a lawsuit in small claims court, alleging that Tesla illegally altered his car’s performance (the Ludicrous option package that he paid for) without his knowledge or consent. Finally, after months of obfuscation by the automaker, Tesla owners can terrify their passengers as they did when their cars were new.
–
In a routine software update sometime in 2016, Tesla reduced the peak power of every all-wheel-drive Model S. Before we turned in our long-term 2015 Model S P85D, we ran it through our full battery of tests as we do for all long-term cars over their 40,000-mile stay. The results were plenty fast, but markedly disappointing: Our initial zero-to-60-mph run was delayed 0.4 second (to 3.7), and the quarter-mile added half a second and a 2-mph-slower trap speed (12.3 seconds at 112 mph). This wasn’t an issue with weather, our test driver, or our particular car. It was because of Tesla updating the software during our stewardship of the car.
–
In mid-January, the automaker admitted after the fact that it had cut power on all-wheel-drive Model S sedans with the intent of protecting their powertrains and batteries from excess wear during repeated hard launches. Tesla agreed to restore power in a software update it released weeks later, although only if the driver engaged launch control. On the TMC forum, sales president Jon McNeill wrote that Tesla would “monitor the condition of the powertrain and let our customers know if service is needed” as opposed to restricting power. Even then, Tesla owners—who are just as data-obsessed as the automaker, if not more—proved through their OBD ports that Tesla hadn’t made them whole. Hence the lawsuit.
–
“With Elon so visibly leading the company, it never occurred to me that this would play out the way it did,” the Arizona owner wrote in May.
–

–
The lawsuit forced Tesla into reversing all of its previous efforts, so that full power is now available all of the time. Initially, according to forum postings, Tesla offered to restore only the Arizona owner’s car in return for signing a nondisclosure agreement. But the owner wanted all Tesla owners to see the benefit, and after refusing to sign, he filed suit seeking the minimum of monetary damages.
–
When we contacted the owner—whose court case is not publicly available—he told us he didn’t want to pursue a lawsuit but felt it was the only way to remedy the company’s “poor customer service.”
–
“Even though this has been a terrible ordeal, Tesla has now hopefully done the right thing and I don’t desire for them to be dragged down over this,” he wrote to C/D. “It is over now (hopefully) and I still want Tesla to do well.”
–
On August 27, McNeill wrote that the company’s latest software update would allow “maximum battery performance independently from Launch mode.” The lawsuit gave Tesla until September 14 to distribute the update, which, the Arizona owner (and others) have confirmed, restored their kilowatts back to normal, ludicrous levels. Still, to be certain, the owner told us he would be recording another drag-strip run in Phoenix before the final court date.
–
This wasn’t the first time Tesla has been caught messing with numbers. In December, Tesla settled a class-action lawsuit in Norway after the company admitted to exaggerating advertised power levels on the P85D.
–
–
–
–
–
“This could have (and should have) been handled better (and at less cost),” the owner wrote to McNeill on August 26. “Your word is the most important thing you have, and you let your customers down on this one.”

Spider-Man: Homecoming is a certified hit all around. Not only is it sitting high with a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, but the movie has already pulled in over $ 472 million worldwide after being in theaters for just under two weeks. The success of the movie can definitely be attributed to the reboot of the webslinger being part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but one of the main reasons the movie turned out so well is because of director Jon Watts, and both Sony and Marvel have decided to keep him around.
The Hollywood Reporter has word on Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios hiring a Spider-Man Homecoming sequel director, and they’re sticking with Jon Watts. The filmmaker who made a splash with the indie flick Cop Car before landing the blockbuster gig is in talks to direct the sequel that is slated for release in the summer of 2019, but currently has no title (though we know it won’t carry the “Homecoming” moniker over).
Tom Holland will reprise his role as Peter Parker, our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, and Zendaya will be back as Peter’s classmate Michelle, as indicated by Kevin Feige when he talked about her place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well as the future of the webhead. Surely Marisa Tomei will return as Aunt May, and that dynamic will be an interesting one considering what happened at the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming (you can read more about that over here, but beware of a big spoiler). Plus, Peter Parker would be lost without his good friend Ned Leeds by his side, so I’d expect Jacob Batalon to be back as well.
Beyond that, we don’t know what a Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel will entail. The one thing we do know right now is that the sequel will begin just minutes after the end of Avengers 4, and it will help set the stage for the Marvel movies that will follow after. Since details on Avengers 4 are tightly under wraps, we’ll just have to wait patiently to see how that movie will impact the next Spider-Man.
No matter what happens on the superhero side of things, for me the best thing about bringing Jon Watts back is that we know he’ll keep Spider-Man grounded in the high school side of the story as well. All of the coming of age parts of Spider-Man: Homecoming felt right in line with classic teenage movies, and Watts will surely carry that over into the next chapter. The question is, who will end up writing the script? Will Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley return to write the first draft? We’ll let you know as soon as we find out.
The untitled sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming arrives on July 5, 2019.

Gypsy has been slated by critics for its glacial pace and uneven writing.
As of July 10, it holds a 27 per cent approval rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, way below other recent Netflix releases Glow (96 per cent) and House of Cards season five (72 per cent).
Creator Lisa Rubin has admitted that there is “clearly a big disconnect between critics and audiences”.
She told Entertainment Weekly: “I’m so happy with the fan response.”
“We’re all excited about the possibility [of a second season]. It’s very much on the table. I’m sure they’ll announce it either way in a few weeks.”
Netflix has, as of late, become more ruthless with its original series.
In recent months it has cancelled The Get Down and Girlboss after their first seasons, and dropped the hugely popular Sense8 – which will now return for a two-hour finale after protests from fans.
If the psychosexual drama does return for another season, Rubin says that it will “become more of a thriller”.
“Obviously, there’s a lot more escalation,” she told Entertainment Weekly.
“In those ways, it will potentially answer critics.”
“Jean is a mystery, and a lot of those questions about her past will be answered in a second season. We’ll start to understand her foundation and her motivations.”
Rubin revealed that Tom and Allison would be a “big thing we explore”.
“Tom and Allison could pose a threat to Jean,” she said.
“It could be that they’re in it together; it could be that Allison’s taken against her will. It’s ambiguous but could be explored in season two.”
Naomi Watts, who plays Jean, has said that she “could definitely be open” to a second run of the show.
“I had a good time with her,” she told Collider.
“I’m not completely on board with a lot of the decisions she made, but it’s fun to shift from a place of judgement to forgiveness.”
Naomi Watts plays Jean Holloway, a therapist so bored of her own life that she begins to meddle in the lives of her patients.
Billy Crudup plays her husband Michael, an over-worked lawyer who grows suspicious of his wife’s strange behaviour.
Karl Glusman stars as Sam, one of Jean’s patients who is struggling to move on from his manipulative ex-girlfriend Sidney (Sophie Cookson).
Lucy Boynton plays Allison, a recovering drug addict who is being treated by Jean. Brenda Vaccaro is Claire, another patient, who is obsessed about her adult daughter Rebecca (Brooke Bloom)’s life choices.
Melanie Liburd plays Alexis, Michael’s PA, who Jean distrusts. Poorna Jagannathan completes the main cast as Larin Inamdar, a close friend of Jean’s and her fellow therapist.
Oscar nominee Naomi Watts is one of approximately 200 characters to appear in David Lynch’s Showtime revival of Twin Peaks, but very soon she’ll step back into the spotlight and lead her own mysterious drama. Netflix has unveiled the first full trailer for Gypsy, in which Watts plays a therapist who crosses the line with her patients and gives in to her desires, throwing her family life into utter chaos.
Our own Jacob Hall mentioned picking up on a whiff of Watts’ breakout performance in Mulholland Drive when he wrote about this show’s teaser trailer, and those parallels are even more explicit in this full-length look at the show: the woman who seemingly has it all together, the exploration of identity, and the line, “I guess I feel like I’ve been living my life as two people…I don’t know which one is real” hammer that comparison home. Gypsy may not have the surreal touches Lynch is known for, but the idea of turning over a picturesque life and examining the ugly truth underneath it is about as Lynchian as it gets.
It’s certainly not fair to hold first-time creator/showrunner Lisa Rubin to such a high standard, but it’ll be fascinating to see if she can carve out her own corner of the psychological thriller genre here and give us something we’ve never seen before. Watts appears to be diving headfirst into this material and looks to be delivering a manic performance that should ratchet up the tension as the thriller elements of this show reveal themselves. The always-reliable Billy Crudup (Almost Famous, Alien: Covenant) co-stars as the husband frustrated with his wife’s behavior. Kingsman: The Secret Service star Sophie Cookson is also along for the ride, as is The Night Of and House of Cards alum Poorna Jagannathan, who seems to be playing someone who knows Watts’ secrets. And after being introduced to Lucy Boynton through her excellent work in last year’s musical Sing Street, I’m excited to see exactly how she contributes to this concoction as well.
The first season of Gypsy arrives on Netflix on June 30, 2017.
Gypsy is a ten-part psychological thriller that follows Jean Halloway (Naomi Watts), a Manhattan therapist with a seemingly picturesque life who begins to develop intimate and illicit relationships with the people in her patients’ lives. As the borders of Jean’s professional life and personal fantasies become blurred, she descends into a world where the forces of desire and reality are disastrously at odds.

Is it hot in here? Or is it just this trailer for Naomi Watts’ new Netflix series that’s steaming up our laptop screen?
The official trailer for Gypsy — a ten-episode psychological thriller debuting Friday, June 30 — promises a very adult story, with Watts starring as therapist Jean Halloway, who crosses the line and gets a little too intimate with some of her patients. As she seductively toys with a male patient and later makes out with a female one (!) to the strains of Banks’ lusty “Waiting Game,” Jean muses: “There’s one force more powerful than free will: our desires.” (It’s no surprise that Fifty Shades of Grey director Sam Taylor Johnson helms the series.)
But Jean is married with kids, and her indiscretions start to catch up to her. A therapist colleague warns her, “You’ve burned so many boundaries,” and Jean admits, “I feel like I’ve been living my life as two people… I don’t know who’s in control anymore.” And when her husband Michael (Billy Crudup) starts to get suspicious of her, it sparks a rift that threatens to bring her whole life — both of her lives — crashing down.

When filmmaker Jon Watts premiered his independent film Cop Car at the Sundance Film Festival, there is no way he could have anticipated that it would lead to him directing Spider-Man’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But after talking to the Spider-Man: Homecoming director on the set of Peter Parker’s first MCU solo film, it is easy to see why he got the job.
During our on-set chat, Watts explained his vision for this new Spider-Man reboot, how it will be different than Marc Webb and Sam Raimi’s films, how Captain America: Civil War changed this film, the importance to diversify Peter Parker’s world, making the villain a real person, the rumors surrounding Zendaya and much more.
Could you have ever imagined being in this chair when Cop Car premiered a year and a half ago?
Not at all, I wish it was some sort of brilliant stepping stone plan to direct Spider-Man. I didn’t even think anyone would want to make Cop Car and then I didn’t think anyone would want to distribute Cop Car, and then I didn’t think anyone would want to see Cop Car. That movie is based on a recurring dream I had as a kid, and we shot it in my hometown, and my sister was the location scout, and my other sister was the medic, and my mom would cook us food. That movie I never thought would lead to anything. This is insane.
Who did you seek out advice from?
I’m trying to remember… I don’t know…I know Marc Webb from music video days and he gave me the best advice. He was like “Just make sure to get lunch with Stan Lee. Definitely enjoy yourself.” I don’t know, it’s a pretty impressive collaboration between Marvel and Sony, so there wasn’t a single person to seek out to get advice and it felt like it was going to be a very different experience. The Russos were really cool, they sort of coached me through it.
Being the first director to have an impact on this Disney-Marvel-Sony thing, have you felt any creative pressures from either side or is it smooth sailing?
Yeah, actually, what I was saying is from the get go it’s been a very collaborative experience. I think as soon as everyone was aware of that and came into it with those expectations, which is how I entered into it…you don’t come in thinking “This has got to be ONE way,” it really lends itself to just being open to ideas and trying stuff out and following things down a path that may not pan out. Then you just start over, and it’s fun. It’s what being creative is about.
When this movie was announced there were a lot of people online who were like “The THIRD version of Spider-Man?” Give us the pitch why this one is different and why people should see it and why it deserves to exist?
Well, I can talk about why I was excited about it. First of all, it being in the Marvel Universe just immediately opened up the doors to so many possibilities. First of all, Spider-Man interacting with the other people in that universe and also just to be able to explore a different side of the Marvel Universe. I was really excited about that because the other movies have shown what I described as the Penthouse level of the Marvel world, what it’s like to be Thor, Iron Man, you know, a billionaire playboy and all of that stuff.
But what’s great about Spider-Man is that he’s a regular kid and so by showing his story you also get to show what the ground level is like in a world where the Avengers exist, which is already I think a great premise for a movie. So that was very exciting, but also just Tom. By having Peter Parker be a kid that also opens up, I think, a lot of possibilities that are only really explored at the beginning of the other two versions of the films. In the Raimi one, he’s only in high school for like ten minutes, but I wanted to make a high school movie already, so the opportunity to do it with Spider-Man was pretty exciting.
At the beginning of the day, going through the art and learning the story one of the big messages that was being hammered to us was this is different than the previous five movies, avoiding things like rehashing Uncle Ben’s story and focusing on high school and even choosing different villains. Are there major supporting characters or villains that you think in the future need to be in sequels or the MCU?
Yeah, we have some ideas of who could fit in in an interesting way, but we’re just trying to build Spider-Man’s side of the world in a rich way that could organically lead to some of that great rogue’s gallery. Not Jackson Wheel, you guys know Jackson Wheel? He’s like one of the silliest of all villains. His name is Jackson Wheel, and he becomes Big Wheel, and he rides around in a giant wheel. There’s another guy named Gideon Mace. It’s hard to get, except digital copies, some years, there’s some real, real classic villains. Will-O’-The-Wisp. Gideon Mace, he has an arm that’s a mace that also shoots mace. You just imagine the writers just cracking up. “We’re late for our deadline, uh…Gideon Mace.” It’s so fun.
In a world where superhero movies have stakes that tend to be really enormous, the stakes here seem much smaller, and some of the action scenes are comparatively smaller than they’ve been. How important was it for you to find that balance?
Another big part of my initial pitch was when you’re in high school everything seems like the most important thing and everything bad seems like the end of the world. So if you have a zit or a girl doesn’t like you or you, have to fight a super villain, those things when you’re fifteen are all at 11. So with that in mind, it was easy to find that grounded story that could lead you through it and also come up with a spectacle that makes for a good trailer and is compelling. It’s always starting with character, and we didn’t want to have it be any empty spectacle so it was finding moments that you would care about and feel invested in Peter and Peter’s journey and not having it just be an action sequence for action sequence’s sake.
The dichotomy is always Peter will escape something horrible that’s happening to him and then when the suit is too much for him he just wants to pack it away, which one do you think is closer in your movie?
He’s right at the beginning where it’s still pretty new, and he’s trying to figure out “Which part of me is Peter and which part of me is Spider-Man and which part of me is both.” It’s a coming=of=age story, so it’s just trying to figure out who you are.
Given that there have been five previous films and you’re working in an established universe, what was your visual approach to making this distinct not only to the MCU but to a general audience that has seen five Spider-Man movies?
I have my director-ey things that I was trying to do, but that’s boring. I don’t know [Laughs] There’s an aesthetic that we’re trying to bring to it and trying to keep it feeling grounded where we’re not just having epic camera moves swooping over everyone. This is the camera coming down to the ground level and staying there for a while with Peter.
