‘STRONG’

17:25: “Last season Manchester United were second in the table and for me it’s a very good team, a very good coach and it will be a very demanding game,” Gracia said.

“But playing at Vicarage Road we feel strong and we think we are able to beat all the teams. We are in a good moment, we are enjoying it, we know in the future things may change but this is a good moment for us.”

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Tom Williams: Rio Ferdinand has just said: “I see Manchester United coming here and causing an upset.” How are the mighty fallen.

Kully: Ashley Young, Chris Smalling, Marouane Fellaini and Jesse Lingard… is it even worth watching?!

Mickey: How humiliating for United fans. This is how low Joe Mourinho has brought them. Even club legend Rio Ferdinand accepting that a result away at Watford would be ‘causing an upset’!

OPERATION KEEP POGBA QUIET…

17:20: Abdoulaye Doucoure knows subduing “show off” Paul Pogba is key to Watford claiming a fifth win of the season.

Doucoure has been an integral figure as the Hornets have won their first four Premier League games and played in the same France age group squads as Pogba.

“He was the same (person). He liked to show off. He’s a very nice guy, always very natural,” Doucoure said. “Today he’s in a different dimension. He’s a superstar now.

“I’ve known him for a long time. It’s always great to play against him. Of course I want to be better than him on the pitch and help my team as much as I can to try to win this battle in midfield. If Paul is a little bit less (influential) for his team, for sure it’s better for Watford.”

HORNETS TO STING?

17:15: After their unexpected – but fully deserved – win over Spurs, Watford find themselves up against another stern test when Manchester United come to Vicarage Road.

United boss Jose Mourinho has had plenty to say in the build-up, not least over his use of England forward Marcus Rashford. A calm approach, though, is what has served Javi Gracia’s squad so well this season.

While some Hornets fans might be allowing themselves to get just a bit carried away, you can bet it will be business as usual from the Spaniard as he goes in search of another perfect performance.

17:10: Luke Shaw misses out on the matchday squad for Manchester United’s Premier League trip to Watford.

The full-back was taken off on a stretcher during England’s Nations League defeat to Spain last Saturday after suffering a concussion and was replaced in the visitors’ XI by former Hornet Ashley Young in the only change for Jose Mourinho’s men.

Watford, who have won their opening four league games of the season, unsurprising remained unchanged with ex-United goalkeeper Ben Foster looking to frustrate his old side.

Watford have no fresh injury concerns. Winger Gerard Deulofeu has been out with a groin problem in recent weeks and suffered a minor injury on his return to training, but should be back soon. Midfielder Tom Cleverley (Achilles) is the Hornets’ only long-term absentee.

Marcus Rashford starts a three-match domestic ban after his red card against Burnley, but Luke Shaw could feature despite sustaining concussion last weekend. Ander Herrera (ankle) and Marouane Fellaini (back) are doubts, while Marcos Rojo and Diogo Dalot will step up their return from injury when the under-23s face Reading on Friday.

Paul Pogba is a SHOW OFF! Manchester United record signing gets backing from Watford star https://briefnews.eu/paul-pogba-is-a-show-off-manchester-united-record-signing-gets-backing-from-watford-star/ https://briefnews.eu/paul-pogba-is-a-show-off-manchester-united-record-signing-gets-backing-from-watford-star/#respond Fri, 14 Sep 2018 06:34:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/paul-pogba-is-a-show-off-manchester-united-record-signing-gets-backing-from-watford-star/

That is the view of Watford midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure, who will go up against Pogba on Saturday.

Pogba, the £89million star, has been criticised for too many tricks and not enough consistency ever since he returned to the club in the summer of 2016.

Pogba’s United future has had a cloud hanging over it this summer after his World Cup triumph with France, with rumours of a move to Barcelona and of a fallout with manager Jose Mourinho.

But Doucoure, who played alongside Pogba in France’s youth teams from Under 17 to 21, believes the midfielder has always had this dash of devilment in him and that is what makes him such a brilliant player on his day.

Premier League surprise team Watford, who have won their first four games, face Pogba’s troubled United tomorrow at Vicarage Road and could go top of the table for only the second time in their history if they win, which would pile more trouble on Mourinho and his team.

But Doucoure said: “I played with Paul since the U17s. He was always the same.

“He likes to show off a little bit. Both on and off the pitch.

“He has this personality – because he is good on the pitch as well. It’s good for him.

“Paul brings a lot of personality, and shows-off sometimes. But it’s good in to have that in football.”

Doucoure, unlike Pogba, is yet to win a full cap for France.

He added: “We still speak. I sent him a message after the World Cup to congratulate him.

“He’s a very nice guy, very natural. Today there’s a different dimension, because he is a superstar, but he was always the same.

“He liked to laugh, to talk about everything.

“At Under 17 he was physically, the same as he is today. He was in advance of everyone else.

“And he had his technique. He grew up in Italy, and he did very good things in England with United.

“Of course, is a very important player for United now. We have to be aware of him, he will be very dangerous for us.”

Doucore added: “We are in the best condition because we have a very good pre-season.

“Everyone was involved, everyone come back with a good mentality.

“Nobody complained about anything. We changed some details.

“This year everyone here wants to be in the top 10. We think we can do something, we have a very good start. We just want more now.”

Tottenham striker Harry Kane fires WARNING to Liverpool after Watford victory https://briefnews.eu/tottenham-striker-harry-kane-fires-warning-to-liverpool-after-watford-victory/ https://briefnews.eu/tottenham-striker-harry-kane-fires-warning-to-liverpool-after-watford-victory/#respond Tue, 01 May 2018 00:43:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tottenham-striker-harry-kane-fires-warning-to-liverpool-after-watford-victory/

Tottenham moved five points clear of fifth-place Chelsea and to within one of Liverpool in third – and still have a game in hand over Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Dele Alli and Kane scored the goals at Wembley as Watford remained six points ahead of the drop zone.

Kane pulled to within four goals of Premier League top scorer Mohamed Salah with his 27th strike of the season.

Tottenham’s form has tailed off in recent weeks and they had gone three games without a win – including the FA Cup defeat to United – before the 2-0 win.

Kane has come in for criticism but he insists he’s in a good place, and he believes Spurs can catch Liverpool – who play Chelsea this weekend after their Champions League semi-final second leg.

The England striker said: “I feel good. I would like to have played better in the last few games – as the whole team would have – but I feel good and I feel sharp.

“Hopefully I can finish strongly like I did last year and go into a big summer. I try to improve every year and last year I got 29 so I’d like to try and beat that first and foremost. We’ll see what happens and in my mind I’m just trying to get to that 30 mark.

“We’ve got a game in hand over Liverpool and if we win that we jump above them as well. It was important just to get the job done tonight and hopefully we can look forward to our final three games now.”

Kane though believes Spurs could have played better at Wembley and thinks they had Hugo Lloris to thank for going in ahead at the break.

He said: “It was good but we could have played better. I thought we could have moved it quicker and we were lucky to be ahead at half-time thanks to Hugo.

“We were a little bit better in the second half but there were still times I felt we could have played it a little bit quicker, especially through the lines.

“We did what we needed to win the game and ease the pressure a bit and we did that. It feels like ages since we last played and our run of form hasn’t been the best.

“When that happens, you want to play straight away and make it right. We’ve had to wait eight days or so [after losing in the FA Cup to Manchester United] and we started a bit slowly but we won the game and we’re happy.”

Mauricio Pochettino was happy to take the result in difficult circumstances and says the performance was secondary on a must-win night.

“I think it was a good night for us,” Pochettino said. “It was important to get the three points as it allows us to be in a good position. It was a must-win game – so important for us. Perhaps we did not play in the way we wanted but got three points.

“During the whole season, 10 months, it is hard to keep playing good football. Watford are a difficult opponent, they played well, created great chances.

“Hugo Lloris was fantastic and showed why he is one of the best in the world. I am happy, three points puts us in a good position.

“The team came back from a difficult loss. They were disappointed after Manchester United. Watford were free to play, no pressure, they are safe, for us it is a massive pressure to take three points.

“Three games ahead, I think we are in a good siutation. To win the games and finish in the top four for the first time in a row would be great for the club.”

Watford boss Javi Gracia admitted he was frustrated with the result following a decent showing.

He said: “When the game finished, you could see we didn’t score and didn’t get points which is frustrating.

“I’m sure we can get more points and more goals in the next game. There were a lot of situations when I arrived but we have tried to improve the position in the Premier League.

“We want to get those three points.”

Former Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas thought Pochettino’s side were tense and lacked the flow they were showing during the early part of the season.

He said: “It was job done, it wasn’t the most vintage performance.

“There was a lot of tension in the stadium that transmitted to the players. There were a few dodgy touches and passing was not on the money.

“They got three points which is the most important thing. They had Chelsea slowly creeping up on them too so they now have an opportunity to start looking upwards rather than behind them.”

Liverpool news: Watford could be forced to sell Abdoulaye Doucoure for one big reason https://briefnews.eu/liverpool-news-watford-could-be-forced-to-sell-abdoulaye-doucoure-for-one-big-reason/ https://briefnews.eu/liverpool-news-watford-could-be-forced-to-sell-abdoulaye-doucoure-for-one-big-reason/#respond Fri, 30 Mar 2018 07:02:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/liverpool-news-watford-could-be-forced-to-sell-abdoulaye-doucoure-for-one-big-reason/

Liverpool have emerged as frontrunners in the race for Doucoure, who has blossomed for Watford this season.

The 25-year-old has been a huge influence for the Hornets, making 23 appearances and scoring seven goals so far this season.

Liverpool are reportedly in the mix for his signature as Jurgen Klopp ponders replacements for Emre Can, who is primed to leave on a free transfer.

And the Mirror say Watford value the player at a huge £40million.

Hornets manager Javi Garcia praised Doucoure by saying: “If there is an offer, we will discuss to find the best solution.

“Everyone wants to play in the Champions League, the big competitions.”

The Mirror say Watford may be forced into selling Doucoure to Liverpool.

And that is because the club are keen to ensure they make another profit this season.

Watford made a £4million profit in the 2016-2017 season but selling their midfield bulldozer, and forward Richardson, may have to be done to balance the books.

Meanwhile, Doucoure recently talked up Liverpool and expressed a desire to play in the Champions League.

“Liverpool is a club that needs no introduction,” Doucoure said.

“I was impatient to play there at Anfield, I wanted to feel the atmosphere.

“For me it would be a dream to play in a club like this.”

He added: “It’s true that I’ve heard that clubs like that are interested in me in England, but there’s been nothing concrete. It’s true that I’d like to play in a team like that.

“Everyone wants to play in the Champions League, so that may mean going to a big club.”

Arsenal 3 – Watford 0: Aubameyang and Mkhitaryan on target as Cech saves penalty https://briefnews.eu/arsenal-3-watford-0-aubameyang-and-mkhitaryan-on-target-as-cech-saves-penalty/ https://briefnews.eu/arsenal-3-watford-0-aubameyang-and-mkhitaryan-on-target-as-cech-saves-penalty/#respond Sun, 11 Mar 2018 22:22:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/arsenal-3-watford-0-aubameyang-and-mkhitaryan-on-target-as-cech-saves-penalty/

Usually his teams fillet you with skill and flair rather than batter you into submission – or at least they used to. But on Sunday at the Emirates Arsenal responded perfectly to Troy Deeney’s accusation that they lack those ‘cojones’.

Deeney made the jibe when Watford beat a supine Gunners 2-1 at Vicarage Road in October and blamed the referee for their performance.

Jack Wilshere tweeted this was “a chance to show we have some ‘cojones’ before the match, and Arsenal did exactly that in a performance if not exactly brimming with virility, then dominant in terms of creating and taking chances.

An early strike from Shkodran Mustafi put them on the right road, and second half efforts from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan made the game safe. But what made it even more delicious for Arsenal and their fans was that Deeney saw his penalty saved by Petr Cech on the hour, when he might have pulled his side back into the game.

Wenger said of his men: “You cannot be a footballer without pride. You cannot be in this sport without pride. All these things affect you a little bit. How much I don’t know, but of course it plays a part.”

It was a sign of the times these days at the Emirates that Wenger made several changes to his team, to save players for Thursday’s Europa League round of 16 second leg against AC Milan. Yes, you read that right. The Europa League.

Nevertheless, a win was important for Wenger in the current climate. The number of empty seats at the Emirates on Sunday told its own tale.

But that Europa League 2-0 win in Milan last Thursday had raised spirits after a horrible spell and Arsenal made a bright start that they so badly needed, as Mesut Ozil put Aubemeyang away, and Hornets goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis had to pull off a fine save.

Five minutes later, though, Ozil floated in a free kick from the left and Mustafi rose above a static defence to thump his header home.

There were still nerves aplenty, as Cech had to save with his legs from Abdoulaye Doucoure, and then Roberto Pereyra put a rebound horribly over after the Gunners goalkeeper had parried Richarlison’s free kick.

Ozil should have scored after dribbling through and then Cech had to pull off another good save from Richarlison’s header.

On the hour Mkhitaryan burst through the middle and laid off a nice pass for Aubameyang to run on to, round Karnezis and slide the ball home. A minute later came the moment Deeney will want to forget. Ainsley Maitland-Niles brought down Pererya, and referee Martin Atkinson pointed to the spot.

Up stepped Deeney, but he hit his kick too close to Cech, who saved to delirious cheers from the Gunners fans. Deeney had missed only one spot kick in the previous 13.

Watford’s chance had gone. As Arsenal pushed on, Ozil broke down the left, his low cross was not cleared and Aubameyang set up Mkhitaryan for a simple third goal ten yards out.

Cech’s hopes of his 200th Premier League clean sheet were rarely threatened after that early spell, but when Sebastien Prodl blazed over from eight yards out a minute from time, he was safe.

Watford manager Javi Gracia said: “I don’t know if Troy’s words inspired Arsenal. I respect every team. I say what I feel and I’m responsible for my words.

“We did not take our chances.”

Manchester City were held to a goalless draw against Crystal Palace at the weekend.

But Pep Guardiola’s men returned to winning ways by easing past Watford on home soil.

Raheem Sterling opened the scoring after just 38 seconds, calmly slotting in after good work from Leroy Sane.

Manchester City doubled their lead through an own goal by Christian Kabasele.

Kabasele bundled the ball over his own line after Kevin De Bruyne’s cross caused panic in the Watford area.

City made sure of the win after the interval.

Sergio Aguero is being linked with a move to Real Madrid in the January transfer window.

But the Argentine got on the scoresheet to make it a comfortable afternoon for the home side.

The only bad note was their failure to keep a clean sheet.

Andre Gray scored in the 82nd minute but his strike was only to be mere consolation.

Watford 2 Leicester 1: Marco Silva praises Hornets after ending losing streak https://briefnews.eu/watford-2-leicester-1-marco-silva-praises-hornets-after-ending-losing-streak/ https://briefnews.eu/watford-2-leicester-1-marco-silva-praises-hornets-after-ending-losing-streak/#respond Tue, 26 Dec 2017 21:55:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/watford-2-leicester-1-marco-silva-praises-hornets-after-ending-losing-streak/

Riyad Mahrez put the Foxes ahead after 37 minutes with his sixth league goal of the season but Malian defender Molla Wague, making his first Premier League start on loan at Watford from Udinese, equalised just before the interval.

Abdoulaye Doucoure, returning after a one-match suspension, won it after 65 minutes with a shot that went in off Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.

“Commitment, attitude and spirit are the most important things, more important than everything. After going 1-0 down we showed all these things,” said Silva.

“We have shown it from the first moments of the season. We didn’t perform like we should have the last two games. But it was a very good game against a good team.”

It looked unlikely to turn out that way when Mahrez nodded home Marc Albrighton’s left-wing cross in the 37th minute.

Richarlison might have put Watford level almost immediately when he took Andre Carrillo’s pass and went round Schmeichel, but the angle was too narrow, his shot hit a post and it seemed Watford were heading for defeat again.

But when Leicester failed to clear a corner in the final minute of the first half, Wague ran onto a rebound off Wes Morgan to hit the ball home from a couple of yards out.

After 65 minutes Schmeichel was rooted to his line as Tom Cleverley’s free kick found Doucoure beyond the far post. The midfield player’s shot might have been going in anyway, but Schmeichel’s attempt to save made sure that it did.

After Cleverley had missed a good chance to seal the points, robbing Ben Chilwell before shooting past the far post, Watford goalkeeper and acting captain Heurelho Gomes kept his side ahead in a frantic final five minutes with late saves from Morgan and substitute Leo Ulloa.

“Heurelho performed really well and he is a leader in our dressing room,” said Silva.

Leicester manager Claude Puel was disappointed that Watford’s goals had followed a corner and a free kick. Leicester have now conceded more goals – 13 – than any other Premier League sides from set plays.

“Until this afternoon we played with good energy and positivity,” said Puel. “But we have to correct our defending from set pieces.”
