They’re not the stars of their shows, but they might as well be, because these supporting characters shine in every scene that they’re featured in. As TVLine continues to look back on the past year, we’ve compiled a list of 25 characters who snagged the spotlight and grabbed our attention with their memorable performances. Our picks include many adorable and hilarious kiddos from mixed-ish, American Housewife, Modern Family and, of course, Evil (that gaggle of daughters!). Several grownups from shows such as Succession, What We Do in the Shadows and The Other Two also stole the limelight this year, commanding the small screen with their comedic zingers or dramatic chops. Even the villains got in on the scene-stealing action: Batwoman foe Alice and Watchmen‘s Lady Trieu were so captivating that they almost made us want to root for the baddies. We’re also heaping kudos on a Bachelor in Paradise contestant, a Politician scenery-chewer and a Prodigal Son sidekick. And of course, no collection of 2019 scene stealers would be complete without a certain wee standout from The Mandalorian. Scroll through the gallery to the right (or click here for direct access) to see the TV scene stealers that captivated us this year, then hit the comments with your own choices. Christmas hasn’t arrived just yet, but we’ve already received the gift that keeps on giving: television! Though many broadcast series are currently on hiatus until 2020, the past seven days of TV still served up enough zingers and one-liners to fill another Quotes of the Week gallery. (And if you missed the 2019 dialogue that we deemed the Quotes of the Year, you can peruse that gallery right here.) This time around, we’ve got a fumbled sports metaphor on All Rise, The Late Show’s takedown of a recent Hallmark Channel controversy, a naughty Family Feud answer from a Star Wars cast member and a recent encounter with Santa Claus on Family Guy that can only be described as disturbing. (As if you’d expect anything less from Family Guy.) Also featured in this week’s roundup: sound bites from Live in Front of a Studio Audience, The Morning Show, The Voice, Watchmen’s season finale and more. This week’s Watchmen has the chef’s-kiss title “A God Walks Into Abar.” But it could also very easily be called “Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Doctor Manhattan But Experience Time in Too Mortal a Fashion to Know How to Ask.” Or, alteratively: “Blue’s Clues.” The big blue guy formerly known as Jon Osterman, as we were repeatedly reminded in this week’s Watchmen, experiences time differently than the rest of us: Instead of moments unspooling in linear fashion, he encounters each minute of his life simultaneously. It’s a heady concept, and the mindbender of an episode chauffeurs us through the loops and whorls of Manhattan’s existence with a steady hand. It’s all framed by his relationship with Angela, which began in a Vietnam watering hole and (seemingly?) ends in the front yard of their Tulsa home. What’s more, we get the answers to several questions — including one set up in the series’ premiere. And I hope you didn’t turn off the episode until the credits were fully done… Read on for the highlights of the hour. She wonders how he knows that traumatic detail about her life, and he says she’s going to tell him in 20 minutes. By now, he’s introduced himself as Doctor Manhattan, and she really doesn’t believe him. After all, hans’t Big Blue been up on Mars for the past 20 years? He says the Mars version of him is a recording, and he’s actually been living on Europa, a moon of Jupiter. If you want to put a fine point on it, he’s living there right now. And he’s also in the bar with her right now. And so on and so forth. “The way I experience time is unique,” he explains. As Manhattan narrates, we watch him create life on Europa from the microbes up. He makes a man and a woman, then accelerates their growth until they are adults. He transports a manor house from England there for them to live in; it’s a special place from his childhood, he says. The man and the woman, as you might’ve guessed by now, are the ones whom we’ve seen as clones in Veidt’s storyline, and the manor house is the house where Veidt now resides. They were created in the image of a British couple that were kind to Jon when he and his Jewish father fled Nazi Germany. Doctor Manhattan eventually takes off his mask, but Angela still thinks he’s just some crazy guy painted blue to commemorate the superhero god’s role in ending the Vietnam War. Plus, she adds, she hates Doctor Manhattan: At Nixon’s behest, he laid waste to Vietnam, which curbed the conflict but created such hatred in the country that the puppeteer who helped kill her parents would do anything to get back at America. Manhattan quietly says that he helped the United States government because he was trying to be what people wanted him to be, but he now regrets it. And why did he leave the paradise he created on Europa? she wonders. Because he’s in love with her, he answers. As the conversation goes on, Manhattan tells her that they’re going to have a 10-year love that will end in tragedy. And six months into the relationship, they’re going to have a fight where she tells him to leave. At one point, she challenges him to prove he’s a god by creating life right there at the table. He makes an egg appear in his palm. She’s unimpressed. Eventually, she gets up to leave and questions why she’d ever get into a relationship with him when it’s guaranteed to end sadly. “Don’t all of them?” he asks. She considers that a moment, then agrees to have dinner with him the next evening. ENTER CAL | Two weeks later, Angela is much more invested in the relationship. But there remains the problem of his otherworldly appearance. So they pick out a recently deceased corpse with no next of kin — Cal Jelani, we hardly knew ye — and Manhattan assumes his appearance (and later, his Social Security Number, etc.). Six months later, as Manhattan said would happen, they’re making love when she asks him where he is. He replies that he’s in the bar with her when they first met. They fight about how they’re not going to fight. And when it hits a little too close to home for Angela, she unleashes on him. “If you know everything that’s gonna happen, what is there to be afraid of?” she demands. And then, as we knew would happen, she asks him to go. A bright blue flash later, he’s gone. We see him walking, naked and barefoot, into Veidt’s Antarctic retreat, Karnak. “It’s nice to see you again, Jon,” Adrian says, prompting Manhattan to wonder how his old frenemy knew it was him, given that he still looks like Cal. “Bcause only Doctor Manhattan would have the balls to show up here wearing nothing but his birthday suit,” Veidt says blithely. It’s been 24 years since the last time they saw each other, which was the night that Veidt unleashed the giant squid on New York City. Veidt knew Manhattan was on Europa (“a little elephant told me”), and guesses that he’s on Earth now because of a woman. Eventually, Manhattan admits that he wants to be mortal so that he can fully be with Angela. Funny enough, Veidt’s got some software for that! Veidt posits that they could put something in Jon’s prefrontal cortex that would short-circuit his memories. “Without the awareness of your abilities, you wouldn’t know to use them — except perhaps as a reflex in life-threatening situations,” he muses. (The down side: Manhattan also would have no idea who he really was.) The device was part of Veidt’s plan to destroy Big Blue back in the day, but he now hands it over as an easy solution… in exchange for the answer to a question: Will Veidt live to see the utopia he so desperately wanted to create? “Yes, but not here,” Manhattan says, explaining that he created a heaven on Europa but had to leave because his creatures’ undying devotion to him wasn’t satisfying. “Sounds like paradise,” Veidt says (which, ha!), saying he wants to go. “Godspeed,” Manhattan says, and it’s done. THE DOCTOR IS BACK IN | Manhattan shows Angela the hardware Veidt gave him, and the plan is in motion. “Perhaps you could tell me I was in some kind of accident,” he suggests. She says they should move to Tulsa and start over, and he agrees. She wavers a moment, wondering if he’ll still be him after she places the thing in his head. “My memories might be lost, Angela, but you won’t be losing me,” he promises. Then they exchange I love yous, and she presses the metal ring into his forhead. What seems like a moment later is actually 10 years later, and she’s taking it out in the kitchen, like we saw in the previous episode. Manhattan comes to and still looks like Cal, though he’s glowing and levitating for a moment there, and he’s really disoriented. Angela quickly tries to bring him up to speed: The 7th Kavalry are coming for them, much like they did on the White Night. She mentions the Kavalry member who had her at gunpoint in the kitchen and was going to kill her “but you zapped him away” — which solves THAT mystery from the premiere. (Remember how Veidt said his powers might manifest in life-or-death situations?) A confused Manhattan takes a walk on the pool — like, on its surface, Jesus-style — which freaks out the kids who are watching from an upstairs window. He waves his hand, and they disappear, which infuriates Angela. He tells her they’re safe with their grandfather at the theater in Tulsa, and he’s walking on water because it’s important “for later” for her to see him do so. Because who doesn’t love additional puzzles when your life is at stake and your husband is an unmoored god? Manhattan tells Angela that just before she put the device in his head, he went to New York to meet Will. Knowing the old man was Hooded Justice, he wanted to form an alliance with him. He informed Will of Angela’s existence; through the magic of his perception of time, Angela asks Present Manhattan to 10 Years Ago Will how he knew Judd Crawford was a member of Cyclops and how he knew he had a Klan robe in his closet. Thing is: Will didn’t… until Manhattan said something. Angela looks horrified. “Did I START ALL THIS?” she asks. Doctor Manhattan offers up the maxim about the chicken or the egg (not helpful!) then goes inside to make waffles (delicious, but also not helpful!). THE DOCTOR IS OUT? | She tries to get him to understand that there are men coming to kill them, which is when he — in a very relaxed manner — informs her that the Kavalry are already set up outside. Oh, and they’re going to forcefully transport him via a tachyonic cannon, and he’ll die, so there’s nothing they can do to stop it. “There’s something I can do,” she replies, arming herself. Manhattan comes as close to sappy as he can when he reminds her that, during that first night at the bar, she asked him when he fell in love with her. “This is the moment,” he says, but she’s not moved in the slightest. “You stay here while I save your life,” she demands, heading out into the yard. Angela gets into a gunfight with SO MANY Kavalry members, and it’s not looking good for her at one point. But then Manhattan walks out and starts vanquishing bad guys with a wave of one hand and stopping bullets in their paths with the other. When the danger has passed, Angela is happy: They won, and he was wrong about the cannon and such. But Manhattan looks at her sadly and says no, he was right. That’s when one surviving Kavarly member fires up the cannon, aims it at the good doctor, and sucks him into oblivion while Angela screams in horror. BUT VEIDT, THERE’S MORE | On Europa, Veidt is shirtless and tied to a tree as the Game Warden looks on. One by one, the clones ask him, “Will you stay, Master?” His answer is always no, and it always earns him a tomato forcefully smushed into his face. He’s living in a cell at the manor home, and when we see him there later, the Warden brings him that yellow and purple cake with several candles on top. We learn that the Warden was the very first man to emerge from the water, and he watched Manhattan create their surroundings. “He made Heaven before my very eyes. Why is Heaven not enough?” he angrily asks. “Because it is not my home,” Veidt replies. He rants about how all 8 million of his “children” are “standing in their crypts… crying out in desperation for me to return.” The Warden doesn’t care. “Enjoy your f–king cake,” he snarls, leaving Veidt alone. But as Veidt blows out the candles, he notices a bit of metal on the side of the pastry: Someone has baked a horseshoe into the cake! He starts laughing like a mad man and — I think? — sharpening one edge of the shoe on the stone floor. Now it’s your turn. What did you think of the episode? Sound off in the comments! BIG BLUE’S MEET CUTE | Though the episode leaps all around time-wise, for simplicity’s sake, I’m going to do my best to consolidate things. Cool? On VVN Night in Saigon, an adult Angela drinks alone at a bar. A tall, bald, blue man wearing a suit — whose face we never see — picks up a discarded Doctor Manhattan mask and puts it on, then enters the establishment and brings her a beer. The entire time they’re there, he’s gunning for her to have dinner with him the next night. She tells him he’s crazy, but when he knows that she’s commemorating the anniversary of her parents’ death, it piques her interest enough to allow him to sit and chat a while.

In this edition of TV Bits:
Earlier this week, word broke that Jeremy Irons was joining the cast of HBO’s Watchmen TV series. Now, even more cast members have been announced. Deadline reports Tom Mison (Sleepy Hollow), Frances Fisher (Titanic) and Jacob Ming-Trent (Superfly) have all signed on to appear in the series from Damon Lindelof. TV Line also says that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who will appear in James Wan’s Aquaman, has also joined the cast, along with The Alienist‘s Sara Vickers. As is the case with all casting for this show so far, we have no idea who these actors are playing, and it’s very likely they’re not playing anyone you might recognize from the graphic novel. Rather than a straight adaptation, the Watchmen HBO series is being called a “remix” of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ iconic comic book. It’s set in the same world as the comic, but 30 years later. The show is currently in production.

We already know that American Horror Story season 8 will be a “Murder House” and “Coven” crossover. And now we know when it will premiere: Wednesday, September 12, 2018. The upcoming season will somehow crossover seasons 1 and 3 of Ryan Murphy’s popular, over-the-top horror show. Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, and Kathy Bates are all expected to return. Cheyenne Jackson, Billy Eichner, Adina Porter, Billie Lourd and Leslie Grossman will also appear.
New production company Hivemind have won the rights to the comic series Gideon Falls. The plan is to adapt the comic into a new TV series with co-creators Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino. The story is described as an ” atmospheric thriller colliding rural mystery and urban horror, the series follows an ensemble cast of seemingly random strangers—a washed-up Catholic priest, an uncompromising female sheriff, and a young recluse obsessed with unraveling a conspiracy buried in his city’s trash—as they become drawn into a mystery connected to a long-forgotten local legend.” I’m a sucker for conspiracy stuff, so I’m instantly interested in this. Hivemind Hivemind Co-President Jason Brown describes Gideon Falls as “psychological horror told with a deeply humanistic touch, a story about imperfect people who confront their own demons—imagined and supernatural alike.” You have my attention. No network has been announced for the show yet.
J.J. Abrams has a new show on the horizon, and like most Abrams’ projects, it’s cloaked in mystery. But here’s one concrete piece of news: Bash Doran, a writer-producer on The Looming Tower for Hulu, Masters of Sex for Showtime, Boardwalk Empire for HBO, and Smash for NBC, will serve as showrunner (per EW). The show, which will air on HBO, is called Demimonde, and is described as “an epic and intimate sci-fi fantasy drama” that “centeres around a world’s battle against a monstrous, oppressive force.” And that’s about all we know! Abrams will serve as executive producer.
Syfy cancelled The Expanse after three seasons, but Amazon recently saved it. Now, showrunner Naren Shankar has offered some insight into what will happen when The Expanse begins its 4th season at Amazon. Speaking with EW, Shankar calls season 4 “another blood-soaked gold rush”:
“One of the things that seems pretty clear, and we set it up at the end of the episode 13 with Holden’s thing, it’s going to be another blood-soaked gold rush. That’s about to happen, because you’ve got an entire species and several societies that have defined themselves on the fact that the solar system is all they’ve got, that those resources are what they have. But suddenly that all changes. It’s like the discovery of the New World — suddenly there’s land, there’s resources, there’s the potential of making incredible fortunes right there. What’s going to happen? Well, readers of the book know that these are things that that destabilize societies, and that’s what you are going to see the beginnings of in season 4.”
Shankar also talked about the new freedom the show will have at Amazon:
There are some things that are amazing that we don’t have to worry about: restrictions on nudity, restrictions on language, and restrictions on length to some extent. It’s like we don’t have to jam the episodes into 43-minute boxes if they’re going to spill over into a 50-minute box. There were times in season 3 where I wished that I had been able to put another four or five minutes into certain shows, it would have been great. And we certainly would have done it, and that’s the beauty of being on another platform like this, is that if the material demands it, you can make the story a little bit longer to accommodate it.
Above you’ll see the season 3 trailer for Animals, the adult animated HBO show that “ventures into the nether regions of Earth’s least inhabitable environment, New York City, which is home to a motley crew of downtrodden creatures. Whether it’s lovelorn rats, gender-questioning pigeons or aging bedbugs in the midst of a midlife crisis, the awkward small talk, moral ambiguity and existential woes of non-human urbanites prove remarkably similar to those of humans.” The series was created Phil Matarese and Mike Luciano, and produced by Jay and Mark Duplass. Season 3 features the voice talents of Tracy Morgan, Johnny Knoxville, John Leguizamo, Aisha Tyler, Cheri Oteri, Edie Falco, Demi Moore, Marcia Clark (!), and more. Animals returns Friday, August 3, 2018 on HBO.
Fox has decided to adapt the French satirical puppet show Les Guignols for the U.S. Per Variety, “The U.S version of Les Guignols would make fun of politicians on both sides of the aisle, as well as prominent cultural figures.” “There’s not a lot of sketch comedy [at the moment], or broad primetime comedy, variety, or puppet shows,” said producer Ben Silverman. “This is a broad comedy show. It’s not just about politics; it’s pop culture.” Would American audiences be interested in this sort of thing? I really don’t know. I know when I was in high school people loved the atrocious puppet show Crank Yankers, so maybe what America needs right now is another puppet program.
I’m humbled. I’m awed. I’m speechless. I’m grateful. The #spnfamily is an INCREDIBLE force, and I truly can’t believe yall made this happen. Thank you. And thank you @MayorAdler #akf @realGpad @JensenAckles @DanneelHarris pic.twitter.com/Qh4hxuvlBw

Supernatural, a show that I believe is entering its 745th season, now has its own holiday. As you can see above, Austin, Texas Mayor Steve Adler declared June 23, 2018 to be the city’s official day of recognition for the long-running series. Supernatural stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki both live in Austin, and Ackles owns a brewery just outside the city, so this makes a certain amount of sense. When Supernatural returns for its new season, it will celebrate its 300th episode. That’s a whole lot of Supernatural, folks.
As you may know, actor Mike Myers returned from an acting hiatus last hear to host a new version of The Gong Show. And he did the entire thing in character. Wearing make-up and affecting an English accent, Myers’ host character went by the name Tommy Maitland, and confused a lot of people. Myers recently talked to Vanity Fair about why he decided to host the show in this fashion. ““I just thought, if I’m doing this almost deconstruction of a talent show, I should be the ringmaster who is also deconstructed,” Myers said. “It should be English in that way of keeping things moving, the super-gregarious [host]…” In the same interview, Gong Show executive producer Will Arnett revealed that Myers took the role very seriously, writing up an entire biographical backstory for his character:
“I remember first getting the pages on [his backstory],” recalled Arnett, who reacted with an impressed “holy shit.” “He’s really created this world to support this guy . . . It was fun watching Mike as Tommy build more and more as we got deeper into the episodes—more mannerisms, the way he walked, the little flares and sort of ticks that he would develop.”
Don’t expect Jimmy Fallon to leave The Tonight Show anytime soon. Vulture interviewed the comic and former Saturday Night Live star about wide-range of topics related to The Tonight Show. During the course of the interview, Fallon was asked how long he plans to stick with his Tonight Show gig. Fallon’s response indicates he’s going to keep doing the show as long as he possibly can:
“As long as people are watching. I don’t know what it is, but I have something in me that doesn’t stop. If I want to do something, I’ll find a way to do that. Now I’m here. I knew when I started Late Night, if things went well, you get the Tonight Show. But you do that and it’s a pope job — you do that until you’re mumbling into the microphone. That’ll be the way it is until maybe television ends. Though, I think shows like the Tonight Show and the Today show and sports will always be good for television. News shows as well. You need to catch up in the world. The other ones can live on Netflix and those things. But there’s always going to be a need for topical comedy. There’s always going to be something you want to look forward to at the end of your day, whether it be Colbert or Kimmel or Conan or whoever makes you laugh and go, “Ugh, I love this show because it makes me laugh and I just forget about everything and I just go, ‘Thank you, that’s what I need.’” There’s room for all of that. I’ll be around as long as you’ll have me.”
THR reports that Netflix will adapt Salman Rushdie‘s 1981 novel Midnight’s Children into a new TV series. The book follows Saleem Sinai, who was “born at the stroke of midnight on August 15, 1947, the very moment of India’s independence. Greeted by fireworks displays, cheering crowds, and Prime Minister Nehru himself, Saleem grows up to learn the ominous consequences of this coincidence. His every act is mirrored and magnified in events that sway the course of national affairs; his health and well-being are inextricably bound to those of his nation; his life is inseparable, at times indistinguishable, from the history of his country. Perhaps most remarkable are the telepathic powers linking him with India’s 1,000 other “midnight’s children,” all born in that initial hour and endowed with magical gifts.” Erik Barmack, Vice President of International originals at Netflix, issued the following statement:
“Midnight’s Children is one of the great novels of the world, and its themes are still relevant to the India of today…The narrative continues to fascinate audiences decades after it was first published. We are incredibly excited to translate this pioneering work of fiction that parallels the birth of modern India, for a global audience. The rich experience and talent of Indian creators combined with the global reach of Netflix have the potential for millions more people around the world to rediscover this story.”
Ghosted, a show I never watched even though it featured some very funny people, has been cancelled by Fox. The series starred Adam Scott and Craig Robinson as two people with opposite viewpoints on the paranormal – one is a skeptic, one wholly believes in it – who “find themselves forced to work with each other when, at low points in their lives, they are both recruited by Capt. Ava Lafrey, a take-no-prisoners former Air Force test pilot and head of the Bureau Underground, a secret government organization investigating paranormal cases.” That sounds like a promising premise (really, it sounds like a comedic version of The X-Files), but audiences failed to tune in. There are three unaired episodes of the show, and no word on when and if they might air. Sorry, Ghosted fans.
Mayans M.C., the Sons of Anarchy spin-off, has a new teaser. Sort of. There’s no actual footage here. Instead, there’s just a close-up of a Mayans tattoo on someone’s back. The title of the teaser, in true pun-tastic fashion, is “Backstory.” See? Get it? Because the tattoo is on his back? Anyway…the show comes from creators Kurt Sutter and Elgin James, and focuses on EZ Reyes, “a prospect in the Mayan M.C. charter on the Cali/Mexi border. Now EZ must carve out his new outlaw identity in a town where he once was the golden boy with the American Dream in his grasp.” I watched the first few seasons of Sons of Anarchy, but eventually grew tired of the show. I’m sure fans who stuck with it will be excited about this, though. Mayans M.C. arrives this fall on FX.

HBO’s Watchmen has its eye on Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. The Get Down alum — who’s poised to break out in a big way later this year via his role as Black Manta in DC’s Aquaman pic — has joined the Damon Lindelof-EP’d pilot in a series regular role, TVLine has learned. Additionally, English actress Sara Vickers (The Alienist, The Crown) has boarded the project. HBO confirmed both castings but declined to reveal details on their respective characters.
The pair round out an impressive ensemble that also includes Tom Mison, Jeremy Irons, Regina King, Don Johnson, Louis Gossett Jr., Tim Blake Nelson, Adelaide Clemens and Andrew Howard.
The potential series — which isn’t a strictly faithful adaptation of the classic Alan Moore comic series, but an original story inspired by it — takes place in a world where superheroes are considered outlaws. Lindelof is writing the pilot and will serve as an executive producer alongside Nicole Kassell, Tom Spezialy and Joseph Iberti.
