Matt, 50, joined The One Show hosts Alex Jones, 43, and Amol Rajan, 36, this evening to present the Watchdog segment of the programme. One particular segment of today’s instalment saw the BBC presenters pay their respects to the late Lynn Faulds Wood, who was a pioneer of investigative journalism. However, as he remembered how much his co-star meant to him, the broadcaster had to fight back tears as he became very emotional.

“And actually, Watchdog was only a tiny window in her life of campaigning. She was persistent, she was principled,” Matt began.

“When I got onto Twitter for the first time, I campaigned to get her an MBE and then when she was given an MBE, she turned it down because her principles said it wasn’t the right thing.

“That was her life. She was also an utter, utter joy to be with, she was just a wonderful woman,” he said as he began to cry.

It was almost like an episode of Spy vs. Spy—a security researcher conceals a camera on his person to record an undercover operative who, under false pretenses and with his own hidden camera, quizzes the researcher about work he did exposing an Israeli exploit seller with highly questionable ethics.

In fact, the counter-sting happened earlier this month, according to an article published Friday by the Associated Press. Researchers at Internet watchdog group Citizen Lab orchestrated the sting after they grew suspicious of a man calling himself Michael Lambert who contacted Citizen Lab researcher John Scott-Railton to request a lunch meeting at a New York hotel. The suspicions were fueled by an earlier meeting in December, in which a man masquerading as a socially conscious investor named Gary Bowman grilled a different Citizen Lab researcher about work the watchdog did exposing NSO Group, the Israeli exploit seller.

Scott-Railton agreed to the New York meeting and was outfitted with a GoPro action camera and several recording devices. At the lunch, he spotted a tiny camera poking out from a pen Lambert had placed on the table. As the AP reports:

Post-war Iraq wants to resume imports of Russian wheat – agriculture watchdog https://briefnews.eu/post-war-iraq-wants-to-resume-imports-of-russian-wheat-agriculture-watchdog/ https://briefnews.eu/post-war-iraq-wants-to-resume-imports-of-russian-wheat-agriculture-watchdog/#respond Tue, 25 Dec 2018 11:19:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/post-war-iraq-wants-to-resume-imports-of-russian-wheat-agriculture-watchdog/ Iraq, a major Middle East grain importer, is interested in purchasing Russia’s durum wheat, agriculture watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor said in a statement following talks with officials from the Iraqi Trade Ministry.

According to the statement, the officials were asked to provide the Iraqi side with data on production volumes in different regions of Russia, as well as information about the types of wheat grown in Russia. The Moscow-based agency pledged to send all the necessary materials to the Iraqi trade ministry.

“The Iraqi specialists have thanked us for the inspection. They stressed that the country is mainly interested in supplies of durum wheat for potentially processing it into flour,” the statement reads.

The parties are said to have discussed creating a working group for dealing with the issues relating to grains and derivative products.

The last cargo with Russian wheat was shipped to Iraq in 2014. Back then, the country purchased 118,500 tons of wheat and meslin (a mixture of wheat and rye). That amounted to 0.5 percent of Russia’s total exports of wheat and meslin, according to Russia’s Federal Customs Service.

However, Baghdad has been buying some other grains from Russian producers. Last year, Iraq purchased 453,000 tons of barley and 1,456,000 tons of rice.

Iraq’s annual demand for wheat is reportedly five million tons with the current import gap hovering around two million tons a year. Over the recent years, Black Sea grain suppliers have given intense competition to US ones, winning the market share in North Africa and the Middle East.

In November, Iraqi Trade Minister Mohammed Hashim Al-Aani, who also oversees the grain board, said Iraq wants Russia to participate in its state tenders.

Earlier this month, Rosselkhoznadzor said the countries also agreed on the building of grain storage facilities in Iraq and supplies of advanced processing equipment as part of the post-war reconstruction of the country’s agricultural sector.

UK broadcasters urge the government to create a social media watchdog https://briefnews.eu/uk-broadcasters-urge-the-government-to-create-a-social-media-watchdog/ https://briefnews.eu/uk-broadcasters-urge-the-government-to-create-a-social-media-watchdog/#respond Mon, 03 Sep 2018 12:08:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/uk-broadcasters-urge-the-government-to-create-a-social-media-watchdog/

A smorgasbord of TV broadcasters, mobile network and internet service providers has urged the UK government to strengthen its oversight of social media companies. In a letter to The Sunday Telegraph, executives from the BBC, ITV and Channel 4, as well as Sky, BT and TalkTalk, called for a new, independent regulator to help tackle fake news, child exploitation, harassment and other growing issues online. “We do not think it is realistic or appropriate to expect internet and social media companies to make all the judgment calls about what content is and is not acceptable, without any independent oversight,” the collective wrote.

“There is an urgent need for independent scrutiny of the decisions taken, and greater transparency,” the letter continued. “This is not about censoring the internet: it is about making the most popular internet platforms safer, by ensuring there is accountability and transparency over the decisions these private companies are already taking.” The UK government is aware of the problems on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms. Last October, it introduced an Internet Safety Green Paper as part of its “digital charter” manifesto pledge. Following a consultation period, then digital secretary Matt Hancock (he’s now the health secretary) said a white paper would be introduced later in 2018.

In an interview with ITV’s Robert Peston, he added that new internet safety laws would be ready “in the next couple of years.” UK politicians have also tried to act through a fake news inquiry spearheaded by the cross-party Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee. Damian Collins, the chair of the committee, asked Facebook and Twitter last year to report back with any evidence of Russian meddling in the UK’s Brexit vote. It didn’t go well — the committee wasn’t happy with their initial responses, and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg refused to give evidence in front of MPs.

Broadcasting and communications executives believe a new, dedicated regulator would be more effective. The letter chimes with comments made by Sharon White, the head of the UK’s media and telecoms regulator Ofcom, in July. “We welcome emerging actions by the major online players, but consider that the argument for independent regulatory oversight of their activities has never been stronger,” she wrote in The Times. A government spokesperson told The Sunday Telegraph yesterday: “We have been clear that more needs to be done to tackle online harms. We are committed to further legislation.” Translation? We know, we know.

US money to support Afghan irrigation ‘helped’ poppy cultivation – watchdog https://briefnews.eu/us-money-to-support-afghan-irrigation-helped-poppy-cultivation-watchdog/ https://briefnews.eu/us-money-to-support-afghan-irrigation-helped-poppy-cultivation-watchdog/#respond Fri, 03 Aug 2018 12:22:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-money-to-support-afghan-irrigation-helped-poppy-cultivation-watchdog/ US counternarcotics policy in Afghanistan not only failed to reduce the notorious opium production, but also contributed to increased poppy cultivation due to Washington’s funding of irrigation projects, a new report said.

The US spent some $ 8.62 billion on counternarcotics efforts in Afghanistan in 2002-2017, a report from Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), the US government authority which oversees Afghanistan reconstruction, states. Despite these enormous 15-year-long efforts, the war-shattered country still continues to be the world’s largest opium producer. Plus opium poppy remains the “largest cash crop” in Afghanistan.

“Our analysis reveals that no counternarcotics program led to lasting reductions in poppy cultivation or opium production,” the document states, noting that “eradication efforts” in the country had no lasting impact. In addition, alternative development programs which often were “too short-term”, failed to provide sustainable alternatives to poppy, “and sometimes even contributed to poppy production,” it stresses.

United States Agency for International Development (USAID) mainly focused its efforts on “large-scale, short-term interventions” which attempted to replace poppy with another crop.

Yet, the majority of these initiatives didn’t give a clear assessment “of how program activities contributed to reductions in opium production,” SIGAR assumes. “Some projects, for example improvements to irrigation systems, even contributed to increased poppy cultivation,” the document notes.

According to SIGAR, anti-narcotics efforts failed to reduce the drug-related threats to Afghanistan “in a meaningful way.” The sum of all opium seizures from 2008 through March 2018 stood at 5 percent of the opium produced in 2017 alone, the explosive figures from the watchdog reveals.

SIGAR’s findings are far from being the first that question US strategy in Afghanistan. Back in 2016 the watchdog revealed that the US Defense Department squandered $ 6 million airlifting nine rare, blond male goats from Italy into Afghanistan. The goal was to “bolster the cashmere industry” in the war-ravaged country.

In addition, since 2012 Washington ‘lost’ some $ 9.7 million in assets in Afghanistan because of the army’s negligence, the Inspector General of the US Department of Defense revealed in 2017, adding that enemy troops might even have used the resources against US troops.

Also in 2017, the US Agency for International Development (USAID) claimed that its mission failed to report results from 91 percent of Afghanistan Reconstruction Trust Fund (ARTF) contributions in its 2013-2015 annual reports. USAID provided Afghanistan with $ 1.5 billion.

Despite the US-led campaign in Afghanistan, which has been going on for nearly 17 years, Taliban militants still maintain a significant presence there. From 2001 to mid-2016, around 104,000 people, including 31,000 civilians have been killed in the war, data from the Costs of War Project said.

UK's privacy watchdog wants to fine Facebook £500,000 over Cambridge Analytica scandal https://briefnews.eu/uks-privacy-watchdog-wants-to-fine-facebook-500000-over-cambridge-analytica-scandal/ https://briefnews.eu/uks-privacy-watchdog-wants-to-fine-facebook-500000-over-cambridge-analytica-scandal/#respond Wed, 11 Jul 2018 03:15:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/uks-privacy-watchdog-wants-to-fine-facebook-500000-over-cambridge-analytica-scandal/

The UK’s Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham has announced that she intends to fine Facebook up to £500,000 (US$ 664,000) over the Cambridge Analytica Scandal, in which the social media giant failed to safeguard user’s information. “New technologies that use data analytics to micro-target people give campaign groups the ability to connect with individual voters. But this cannot be at the expense of transparency, fairness and compliance with the law,” she said, in a statement. Before a final decision is made on the fine, Facebook will have a chance to respond to the Information Commissioner’s Office. “We have been working closely with the ICO in their investigation of Cambridge Analytica, just as we have with authorities in the US and other countries. We’re reviewing the report and will respond to the ICO soon,” the company said. British firm Cambridge Analytica was forced to shut down in May after it was alleged to have acquired data on 87 million Facebook users, without their consent, to target them during political campaigns. The scandal sparked two separate investigations, one by the Electoral Commission, into the company’s role in former UKIP leader Nigel Farage’s Leave.EU campaign, and one by the Information Commissioner’s Office, which has announced a wider inquiry into the use of such data in politics. The company’s practices also led to a US Congressional inquiry. Facebook’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has apologized for his company’s handling of the Cambridge Analytica privacy scandal.

Watchdog viewers shocked by ‘disgusting’ cinema reveal: ’Never going again’ https://briefnews.eu/watchdog-viewers-shocked-by-disgusting-cinema-reveal-never-going-again/ https://briefnews.eu/watchdog-viewers-shocked-by-disgusting-cinema-reveal-never-going-again/#respond Thu, 10 May 2018 08:59:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/watchdog-viewers-shocked-by-disgusting-cinema-reveal-never-going-again/

BBC series Watchdog is used to blowing the lid off various hidden scandals across the country and tonight was no exception.

Using their team’s Swab Mob to uncover the truth about bacteria levels in the nation’s favourite pastime, presenter Nikki Fox met up with a professional to discuss the results.

Nikki revealed the team had tested 30 branches of Odeon, Cineworld and Vue cinemas in the UK, and came back with a worrying revelation.

Firstly, the team found the presence of a bacteria called listeria in the cupholder at one branch.

What’s more, salmonella was found in another and a number of branches had unacceptable levels of bacteria on seats, in drinks cups and in the ice cubes from drinks machines.

The horrifying information led to extreme reactions from many viewers, who were concerned about the possibility of getting ill from their cinema experience.

Taking to Twitter, they shared their feelings on the issue.

One person wrote: “Omg is anyone watching #Watchdog … I will never get a cinema drink again.”

“#watchdog ewww I’m going to take my own drink to the cinema next time,” another disgusted viewer shared.

A third agreed: “Wow I don’t want to have any drinks at the cinema anymore #Watchdog.”

While a fourth decided: “Looks like I’m not stepping inside a cinema for a while #watchdog.”

Some viewers weren’t surprised at the show’s reveal, as they had predicted it for a while.

“Not surprised about the bacteria in cinema pump drinks, been thinking this forever at fast food places etc #watchdog,” one person admitted.

One self-proclaimed former employee even spoke out on the issue, claiming: “#watchdog as someone who used to work in a cinema I have never bought cinema snacks.”

Another upset fan said: “#watchdog #cineworld #vue #odeon Cinemas charge very high prices for a film experience, why can’t you put in place stringent measures to ensure equipment is cleaned correctly?

“You earn more than enough on the confectionery & your margins are extortionate so please treat us well!”

“Watchdog exposing cinema drinks!!!! You guys need to watch it now THIS IS WHY I BUY MY OWN BOTTLED WATER @BBCOne #Watchdog,” another person added.

Watchdog’s presenter Nikki contacted all three cinemas for a comment on their findings during tonight’s instalment.

Due, Odeon and Cineworld all replied and said they were disappointed to learn of the findings and were taking every effort to conduct their own investigations into the conditions at their cinemas.

They added they take stringent measures to ensure the best quality of environment for their customers.

Watchdog continues Wednesdays at 8pm on BBC One.

Money laundering laws broken by Jeremy Hunt, MP referred to parliament watchdog https://briefnews.eu/money-laundering-laws-broken-by-jeremy-hunt-mp-referred-to-parliament-watchdog/ https://briefnews.eu/money-laundering-laws-broken-by-jeremy-hunt-mp-referred-to-parliament-watchdog/#respond Fri, 13 Apr 2018 11:08:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/money-laundering-laws-broken-by-jeremy-hunt-mp-referred-to-parliament-watchdog/

Jeremy Hunt will be referred to parliament’s standards watchdog for a potential breach of anti-money laundering laws, after he failed to disclose a 50 percent stake in a firm that bought luxury apartments.

The health secretary set up the company with wife Lucia Guo in September 2017, purchasing seven properties in Southampton’s luxurious Ocean Village development in February 2018. Hunt failed to notify Companies House and the register of MPs’ interests about his stake in the company for for six months, advising Companies House of his involvement on March 29. Failing to disclose interests to the parliamentary register is punishable by a fine or up to two years in prison.

Hunt said not disclosing his financial stake in Mare Pond Properties Limited was an “honest administrative mistake” that was later rectified. Laws introduced in 2015 made it compulsory for anyone with a share of over 25 percent in a company to be listed as a ‘Person with Significant Control’ within 28 days – which Hunt failed to do.

Cabinet Office Shadow Minister Jon Trickett slammed Hunt for the bungle in a statement. “It appears Jeremy Hunt has taken part in illegal activity in his failure to declare his involvement in a luxury flat investment,” Trickett said. “This is simply unacceptable and especially so given the secretary of state’s position at the heart of Theresa May’s government.

“Labour will today refer Jeremy Hunt to the standards commissioner to look into this serious breach. He should have had the decency to refer himself rather than sweep this under the carpet.”

The health secretary, well known for his battles with junior doctors over the issue of pay and his overseeing of cuts to the NHS, was soon trending on Twitter.

One of Jeremy Corbyn’s  senior policy advisers, Andrew Fisher, took to the platform to slam Hunt for his actions and subsequent apology. Activist Dr Lauren Gavaghan was one of many others to join the Hunt-bashing on Twitter.

Downing Street, however, has insisted there was no breach of the ministerial code. A statement from Number 10 read: “Jeremy has rightly apologised for an administrative oversight, and as the Cabinet Office have made clear there has been no breach of the Ministerial Code. We consider the matter closed.”

‘Are you pro-Putin? Do you hold secret meetings?’ – NY watchdog asks Russian pancake chain https://briefnews.eu/are-you-pro-putin-do-you-hold-secret-meetings-ny-watchdog-asks-russian-pancake-chain/ https://briefnews.eu/are-you-pro-putin-do-you-hold-secret-meetings-ny-watchdog-asks-russian-pancake-chain/#respond Sun, 01 Apr 2018 22:36:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/are-you-pro-putin-do-you-hold-secret-meetings-ny-watchdog-asks-russian-pancake-chain/

The Russiagate-inspired frenzy seemingly hit a new low when a routine sanitary inspection in New York turned into an investigation into Putin ties and “secret meetings in the basement” at a well-known Russian food chain.

A New York sanitary inspector posed “astonishing questions” to Teremok, one of Russia’s largest fast-food chains that specializes in traditional cuisine, according to its founder and CEO, Mikhail Goncharov.

In a Facebook post, Goncharov said that the inspector, who appeared “markedly hostile” towards the chain, asked if the New York-based restaurant “held secret meetings in the basement.” To make things worse, the watchdog wanted to know whether Teremok was “[Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s company” and demanded that it disclose whether it “laundered money from Russia.”

Goncharov said the inspection affected the company’s revenues, and he wondered if McDonald’s “was being asked similar questions” by Russian officials.

He also shared a letter sent to US President Donald Trump by the Congress of Russian Americans (CRA), in which the organization urged him to “arrest the progression of the new Cold War that is spiraling more and more out of control.” The Russian association also voiced their concern over Washington’s closures of Russia’s consulates in San Francisco and Seattle.

In December, Goncharov complained about McDonald’s getting preferential treatment in Russia, while his chain supposedly had to struggle with the competition. Teremok’s CEO said the American fast-food giant is renting two locations in downtown Moscow for just $ 165 per square meter a year, saving $ 6 million per year with these two restaurants alone.

“This is a beastly policy of killing and strangling Russian businesses. And I have to compete with them,” he said in an emotional Facebook post. “We have been forced to switch to white plastic plates and have to listen to our customers about bad service despite high prices. We cook from fresh products, and these McDonald’s bas***ds serve deep-fried food.”

Teremok is one of the largest Russian fast-food companies, with about 300 restaurants in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Krasnodar, and other cities. It also has two restaurants in New York, with one located in Manhattan.
