A mass of metal and gunfire roars across the desert. That’s your battlefield in Road of Dust and Rust. Your group of vehicles outfitted with weapons must outmaneuver and blow away enemy convoys along the roads, roads where other hazards lurk: buildings and structures to smash foes into, dust storms that can send unlucky cars tumbling. But your group is your main and most poweregular tool, especially once they’re armed with flamethrowers, armor, devices for boarding other cars, and more.
Outside of these battles on the procedurally-generated road, you travel the overworld map, where factions war and trade. Your dealings and actions can shift the balance of the wasteland, as you choose which factions to help and learn more about their societies. Die and your future warrior will embark in this persistent world.
Road of Dust and Rust is still in development and doesn’t have a release date at the moment; you can follow its progress and developer Stas Shostak on Steam and Twitter.

The 1936 Berlin Olympics are shrouded in myth and tragedy.
Just as Hitler was rising to power, the International Olympic Committee in 1931 granted the German capital the right to host. Banners bearing the swastika hung beside the Olympic flag.
Today, the Olympic Village located in Elstal, Wustermark, on the edge of Berlin, sits in ruins.
In 2008, photographer Sylvain Margaine visited the decaying concrete wasteland for his website and book, “Forbidden Places: Exploring our abandoned heritage.” Take a look inside.

REVIEW:
In most postapocalyptic games, you’re struggling to survive. But in Genderwrecked’s world, you don’t face zombies or scrounge for supplies. Your mission sends you on an urgent search for meaning and certainty. You’re seeking a different kind of survival, one of emotional importance that will help you understand yourself and how you relate to others.
Developers Heather Robertson and Ryan Rose Aceae’s visual novel is a journey through a desolate landscape filled with monsters, all grappling with loneliness, self-esteem, insecurities, and that ineffable thing called gender. It’s humorous, defiant in its glibness, and moving in its sincerity. It’s out now on Windows, Mac, and Linux, and even if you’ve never contended with your own gender, it’s a touching story that’s a joy to experience.

Emotional roller coaster
Above: Lucy and Maggie, two girlfriends who support each other.
Genderwrecked has a very cyberspace sense of humor. It speaks a digital parlance that’s born straight out of the mesmerizing garbage fire of social media sites like Twitter. It’s quick with its jokes, which punctuate the dialogue like sharp jabs meant to both tickle your funny bone and to keep you from getting too close. The humor seems at times like a coping mechanism as well as a genuine effort at connection. But when it stops joking around and slows down so you have a moment to listen to the characters’ stories — that’s when the magic really happens.
At the outset, you embark on a quest to learn about gender. Some of the folks you encounter on your journey are willfully obscure, speaking (sometimes literally) in riddles and referencing interstitial space-time and the gravitational pull of heavenly bodies. Their emotions are shrouded in metaphors, allusions, and stream-of-conscious philosophizing that suggest that maybe they’ve been alone for far too long. Despite all this, you’ll always get a glimpse of what they’re going through — sometimes loneliness, an urge to connect with people yet an aversion to vulnerability and the compromises that accompany messy, human relationships.
Because the dialogue is generous with humor and all-caps cosmic horror, it feels all-the-more precious when characters confide in you. For instance, you encounter two girlfriends, Lucy and Maggie, who are straightforward and say exactly what they mean. And when Lucy tells her story, the game doesn’t try to distract you with linguistic sleight-of-hand. It doesn’t wave around puns or tongue-in-cheek jokes. It simply lets her talk, and her words slice through with a clarity and sincerity that’s beautiful and heartbreaking.
The aesthetic
Above: Genderwrecked features both evocative sparse ASCII art and detailed hand-drawn illustrations.
As I wandered the somewhat hellish landscape of a world decimated by forces unknown, I was struck by how stark yet beautiful it was. I’m a sucker for ASCII art, particularly the way it can suggest a shape with just a perfectly placed ampersand, and Genderwrecked’s background art is studded with cryptic symbols and morse code dashes. It leaves you to decipher the world on your own, letting you fill in the spaces with just a few lines of description to go on.
In sharp contrast, the characters are hand drawn monsters, fully detailed and meticulously colored. I admired the tiny segments on Maggie’s maggot-ridden body, even as I felt a little queasy because bugs are one of my personal weaknesses. Jolene the screaming tree is scrawled with bold lines and splotches of colors contrasted with sharply defined teeth and the careful curve of a lashing tongue.
Genderwrecked’s art sometimes reminded me of underground punk zines — tiny magazines printed in someone’s basement, filled with weird artifacts and graffiti-esque art. Though it doesn’t capture that aesthetic, its spirit feels related in attitude and personality.
Memorable characters
Above: Please meat my robot dad husband, we are very much in love.
The postapocalyptic landscape isn’t teeming with characters, but the ones you meet are memorable. You’ll encounter Lucy and Maggie, of course, who are made respectively of bone and wriggling maggots. You’ll answer riddles from Phantasmos, of dreams and nightmares, mystery, phases, unbeing and being again — or Fanny, for short. If you want, you can marry Mark, the rad bot with a dad bod, who’s fathered 159 boys made of ground meat and has a penchant for terrible puns. And a pseudo-intellectual tree will yell at you in all-caps then ask you a little shyly for your opinion.
Later on, you’ll learn more about some of these characters. But even those who don’t get as much backstory are fully realized people with hopes and dreams (even if some of them don’t have lips or feel sensation). Whether it’s because of their quirks or a line of dialogue that strikes you, it’s going to be hard to forget them.
Occasionally frantic dialogue
Above: These meatboys are very good.
Genderwrecked trades quips at a lightning fast speed when more than one character is on the screen, bouncing jokes off of each other at a rate that can be a little dizzying. This works for the most part, but occasionally the jokes fell flat.
One specific example is a brief gag about Alfie’s name and how his brother, Craig, deliberately mispronounces it. It seemed too easy and unnecessary, especially given how lovable the meatboys were on their own. Fortunately, that segment was over quickly, and it didn’t detract from the overall story.

In an interview, Robertson and Aceae told me they made a deliberate decision against creating an “educational” game about transgender issues. They wanted to make something that reflected their own experiences and the stories of those in their lives. By shedding the pressure to show players a “perfect representation” — if such a thing exists — they’ve created something that’s genuine and heartfelt.
All the actions you can take in the game involve other people, whether that’s talking to them, kissing them, or fighting them. You can be confrontational or receptive, you can learn about their ideas. You may never really complete your quest to define gender per se, but you learn about how important it is to be in a community of people you can engage with about these topics.
Toward the end, Genderwrecked drops its pretenses and casual memes. I almost felt like it was rewarding me for making it so far — like it trusted me enough now to show its emotional core. It exchanges its flippant jokes for an earnest dialogue about how messy it can be to unravel the threads of identity, to figure out who you are when you’re not backed in a corner by external forces and oppressors. And it reassures you that it’s OK to not know, it’s OK to be considered monstrous by those who don’t understand.
There will always be people out there who do.
Score: 90/100
Genderwrecked is out on January 18 for Windows, Mac, and Linux. The developer sent us a code for review.
Multiplayer in Fallout on PC and consoles probably isn’t going to happen. So, if you want friends to join you in the wasteland you’re going to have to go old school. The folks from Fantasy Flight Games have devised a tabletop board game that’s suitable for up to four players. You can apparently play solo too, according to Game Informer. There’s a heavy emphasis on decision making (a callback to the older Fallout games on PC), and newer elements like the VATS system for combat are on offer as well.

Storytelling plays a significant role here too. Narratives are pulled from the Bethesda-made games and their expansions, including Fallout 4. If you’re looking for a different way to deal with a super mutant encampment or a rad roach infestation and Fallout Shelter isn’t cutting it for you anymore, maybe this will when it’s released in a few months. Need a video-game board-game fix before then? There’s always Dark Souls.

With all the hullabaloo of San Diego Comic-Con, there’s so much to see and do that we don’t even have time to cover every single show we love. One of the programs that fell by the wayside for us over the weekend was Adult Swim’s incredible animated series Rick and Morty. It’s one of my favorite shows on TV right now and it killed me to miss it since the /Film crew had so much more to cover.
Thankfully, the internet is a helpful place, and you can pretend that you were at Comic-Con yourself by catching up on all the big updates that came from the Rick and Morty panel. That includes a new sneak peek behind the scenes of an episode that will take the titular duo to the Wasteland of Mad Max, details on some of the guest stars coming this season, and the triumph of co-creator Justin Roiland finally getting his hands on the retired McDonald’s Mulan Szechuan sauce.
Find out all the new details about Rick and Morty season 3 below.
Watch this sneak peek at “Rickmancing the Stone”, the second episode of Rick and Morty season 3 from Adult Swim:
As Dan Harmon says in the featurette, this episode primarily takes place in a “diesel-powered, vehicular field of death and nihilism.” And rather than phoning in certain details, it seems like the animators and character designers really gave 110% when it comes to creating a world that isn’t entirely unlike the Wasteland from the world of the Mad Max franchise. The only difference seems to be that this version of the Wasteland began to manifest itself in the 1990s, as illustrated in the design of the various extras in the episode’s setting.
Rick and Morty has always had twisted versions of pop culture settings and characters that geeks are familiar with, so this is right in line with their brand. The most fun, of course, will be finding out what Rick and Morty (and Summer) did to piss these people off.
Though details are sparse when it comes to the stories we can expect from Rick and Morty this season, co-creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon revealed some of the guest stars who would be popping up throughout the season.
During a conversation with IndieWire (which you can watch right here), the two rattled off the names Thomas Middleditch, Susan Sarandon, Danny Trejo, Christian Slater and Peter Serafinowicz. There will also be two Community cast members reuniting with Dan Harmon, with Gillian Jacobs and Joel McHale lending their voice to the third season. Plus, Keith David will be back as the President of the United States.
In the surprise third season premiere of Rick and Morty that debuted on April Fools Day earlier this year, we found out that the driving force of Rick’s madness may be getting his hands on a certain limited edition condiment, the Mulan-themed Szechuan sauce that was available at McDonald’s back in 1998. It turns out that’s something that Justin Roiland has been obsessed with getting his hands on too.
During the Comic-Con panel for the series last Friday (via The Huffington Post), Roiland revealed that he’s been on the hunt to get the sauce back in his hands for nearly 20 years now. He said, “I heard they had a limited batch at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Canada,” Roiland told reporters. “I called every McDonald’s in L.A. and went online. I even might have tried to connect with people in Canada to see if they could mail it to me and that failed.”
But Roiland is about to achieve his goal, because McDonald’s reached out to him and said they were going to send him a jug of the Szechuan sauce in the near future. Roiland will also livestream a tasting session with him and Harmon to capture any potential disappointment that may result from tasting the sauce again.
There’s a chance Roiland may not be the only one having that sauce again, because McDonald’s previously said they would consider bringing it back after Rick and Morty sparked renewed interest and demand for the sauce. With a live-action Mulan movie just around the corner, there will be a big promotional opportunity to make it happen, but let’s hope fans won’t have to wait that long.
Speaking of waiting, if you can’t wait until the third season premiere of Rick and Morty at the end of the month, maybe this little video will hold you over. It features a variety of animation styles as Rick and Morty find themselves traveling across the multiverse, and it’s basically a trippy music video set to the instrumental version of “Thursday in the Danger Room” by Run the Jewels. Matt Taylor is the director behind this wild video.
Finally, for those who really want to pretend like they were at Comic-Con, you can watch the entire panel that the show put on in San Diego over the weekend. As usual, it features hilarious banter between Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, and you just might learn a thing or two about the upcoming third season debuting on Adult Swim on Sunday, July 30th at 11:30pm ET/PT.

Welcome to Ars Cardboard, our weekend look at tabletop games! Check out our complete board gaming coverage at cardboard.arstechnica.com—and let us know what you think.
2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road lit up the big screen with its post-apocalyptic road trip set to thunderous percussion and a wailing guitar/flamethrower. Now we may just have a proper board game to go with the soundtrack.
The post-apocalyptic world is not a new setting for cardboard aficionados; the Mad Max-inspired game Thunder Road from Milton Bradley still stands tall as a light action game with nice components. Contemporary efforts, however, have often fallen short, lacking the necessary focus found in that first mass-market game. New title Wasteland Express Delivery Service attempts to tackle this problem by welding an over-the-top Armageddon setting to a lightweight pick-up-and-deliver frame.
]]>Roaming around a post-nuclear U.K. can be exhausting work, especially when you’re part of a band that has seen a sudden upsurge in popularity after the post-apocalyptic world finds that they love terrible music. That still doesn’t put you above running errands, JRPG-style, and trying to keep the irradiated germs from taking you out in Gamey Rot.
Amy Rot and her bandmates, Steven Complex-Bastard and Crystalis Transsexualis, are sent out to pick out the items from a shopping list for their vault, setting out through the sewers, subway systems, and varied nightclubs that dot the wasteland. As they do, they’ll meet up with a few other characters and survivors in the world, leading to hangouts, dates, and some elements of an elaborate plot that may put a crimp in the band’s new YouTube fame.
Also, there’s vicious germs. These germs will slowly cover up the characters’ bodies, and only liberal applications of soap and deodorant will keep them going in combat. You can fight back with a complex card system, though, where players can equip certain cards for each character and put them in a general pool, laying them out in a grid. These cards also possess elements of the characters’ personalities, forcing players to play them in certain proximities to other cards (Amy likes to be surrounded for one of her cards, since she’s self-obsessed, etc). The cards teach you a bit about the characters while also providing a neat, customizable battle plan.
Gamey Rot is looking to take players to a quirky, ridiculous world while offering them a sharp, complicated battle system. Sounds like good, if irradiated, times to me.
For more information on Gamey Rot and developer Kate Barrett, you can head to the game’s site, the developer’s site, or follow them on Itch.io, YouTube, and Twitter.

Writer-director Luke Jaden uses the vacant lots and abandoned buildings of his Detroit hometown to provide the setting for King Ripple—a sinister fairy tale about a young man whose desire to be left alone has turned him into a mass-murdering deity of sorts. Despite that, curious kids just can’t stay away.
The title character is played by Keith Stanfield, who you may recognize as the dinner party guest who freaks out when he’s photographed in Get Out.
