First broadcast in 2002, it was initially axed in 2007, only to return following pressure from fans for a further three series between 2010 and 2015, taking the story beyond the Second World War and into the Cold War era. On hearing the poll result, a delighted Mr Horowitz, 64, said: “I’m really thrilled that Radio Times readers have voted Foyle’s War as the show they’d most like to come back. “I wrote the last episode in 2014, but no matter where I am in the world, people still tell me how much it means to them. And the repeats still get high viewing figures.

“I’d certainly be up for a Christmas special or two if anybody asked. Foyle’s War was a passion project for me from start to finish and I miss it to this day.

“It really cheers me up to think that Radio Times readers still hold it in such high regard.”

Another popular ITV drama, long-running police series The Bill, came second in the poll.

Originally broadcast in 1984, the Sun Hill set drama ran for 26 years before coming to an end in 2010.

And BBC sitcom Count Arthur Strong, written by Steve Delaney and Graham Linehan and broadcast from 2013 to 2017, completed the top three shows viewers would most like to see again.

21st century TV shows fans would most like to see again, according to Radio Times:

1) Foyle’s War, ITV, 2002-2015

2) The Bill, ITV, 1984-2010

3) Count Arthur Strong, BBC2/BBC1, 2013-2017

4) Spooks, BBC1 2002-2011

5) Home Fires, ITV, 2015-2016

6) Life On Mars, BBC1, 2006-2007

7) Detectorists, BBC Four, 2014-2017

8) Downton Abbey, ITV, 2010-2015

9) Phoenix Nights, C4, 2001-2002

10) Happy Valley, BBC1, 2014-2016

The women of Melbourne, Australia, had their own duties to fulfill on the homefront during World War II: factory work, raising children, welcoming American GIs flooding into the city. Late-night dances in Melbourne’s “brownout” — not quite a blackout but certainly dark enough to obscure the city from any Japanese pilots lurking above — were lighthearted fun, a break from the stresses of war. Until women’s bodies began turning up.

The corpse of Ivy McLeod, 40, was discovered in the early hours of May 3, 1942; she had been strangled in an inner-city neighborhood. Pauline Thompson, 31, turned up less than a week later, strangled and dumped in her own doorway at the edge of the city. Gladys Hosking, 40, was found on May 18 in a park near Camp Pell, a massive camp housing thousands of GIs awaiting word on when they’d be shipped out to the Pacific theater. Two of the three women had last been seen alive in the company of a man with an American accent. The hunt was on.

The Yanks had been welcomed to the city, says Bart Ziino, a historian at Victoria’s Deakin University. As the war tore across Europe, troops in Southeast Asia were thinned to protect the homefront. Imperial Japan snapped up the region, taking advantage of local populations weakened by colonialism. With Australian and New Zealand forces supporting the British in the Middle East, invasion looked near certain.

There was a sense it had to be an American serviceman, if only for the comfort that it couldn’t be one of us.

Bart Ziino, historian at Deakin University

It didn’t help that Winston Churchill had abandoned Australia, refusing to send troops to protect the country. In response, Prime Minister John Curtin reached out to U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who sent thousands of servicemen from 1942 onward. By 1943, 250,000 American GIs were roaming the streets of Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Australia and its population of 7 million finally felt safe.

In the end, Japan never did invade. The real wartime terror for Melbourne came in the form of an American GI.

New Jersey–born Eddie Leonski was conscripted into the Army in 1941, prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Keen to leave behind a family life marred by abuse and mental health issues, the private developed alcoholism during training in Texas, according to military documents. Around that time he also reportedly attempted to strangle a woman. If his superiors in the Army were aware of these allegations, it did not prevent them from shipping the 24-year-old off to Australia in January 1942.

For Australian women, it was a heady time of incremental but definite social change. Women had always been in the industrial workforce, especially working-class women, according to Ziino. But women moving into paid work in much greater numbers took off around this time. “The Japanese threat saw the economy really ramp up,” he says, noting how women were required to move into armaments production and other industrial sectors.

They also had a special role when it came to U.S. forces — show them a good time. This didn’t necessarily mean sex, but it did mean engaging socially in pubs, bars and dance halls. It was a tough world for the women to navigate — the freedoms afforded by the war existed within a conservative culture. Be friendly, but not too friendly. “Women weren’t throwing themselves at the men,” says Ziino. “But commentary at the time criticized them for being too forward.”

Americans were seen as morally looser. So when the trio of dead women indicated a crime with sexual elements — all three victims had pieces of clothing removed or were partially disrobed — the police headed to Camp Pell. “There was a sense it had to be an American serviceman, if only for the comfort that it couldn’t be one of us,” Ziino explains.

The hunch proved correct. Local police zeroed in on Leonski as the man dubbed “the Brownout Strangler” by local media. It turned out the killings weren’t about robbery or sexual assault. They were about the women’s voices, Leonski told investigators. Thompson had been singing, he said, and he wanted to capture the voice. “She was singing in my ear, it sounded as if she was singing for me,” he said. “I grabbed her. She stopped singing.”

“The public revulsion was very over the top,” says Ian W. Shaw, author of a new book about the killings, Murder at Dusk. “The reporting at the time was very different. He murdered them in a hard, vicious way, but it was described with euphemisms like ‘criminal assault.’”

Leonski was court-martialed for his crimes rather than charged through the state justice system. The five-day trial was closed to the public, and local authorities imposed tight controls on press coverage. The U.S. Army sentenced Leonski to hang for the murders after a court psychologist said he was likely to continue reoffending. (Shaw uncovered psychiatric reports that showed Leonski had evaded identification as a possible violent offender earlier in his Army career.)

Leonski joined a long list of the state’s most notorious criminals housed in what was then the outer suburb of Coburg, at Pentridge Prison, previously home to bushranger Ned Kelly and 1920s gangster Squizzy Taylor. For 22 weeks he waited on an appeal. Then a letter from Roosevelt arrived. Leonski was hanged on Nov. 9, 1942. To this day, he’s the only person tried and executed on Australian soil by a foreign government.

Remembering the Bethnal Green tube disaster: The war-time tragedy Churchill hushed up https://briefnews.eu/remembering-the-bethnal-green-tube-disaster-the-war-time-tragedy-churchill-hushed-up/ https://briefnews.eu/remembering-the-bethnal-green-tube-disaster-the-war-time-tragedy-churchill-hushed-up/#respond Sat, 24 Feb 2018 19:50:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/remembering-the-bethnal-green-tube-disaster-the-war-time-tragedy-churchill-hushed-up/

The Bethnal Green tube disaster was hushed upTONY SAPIANO / ALAMY STOCK

The Bethnal Green tube disaster was originally hushed up

By “it” she means the worst civilian disaster of the Second World War, albeit one that was all but absent from the history books for many years.

On a rainy evening of March 3, 1943, 173 people were killed in a crush on the stairs at London’s Bethnal Green Underground station while sheltering from what they thought was a German bombing raid.

Of the victims 84 were women and 62 of them children, while 60 others needed hospital treatment. It was death and injury on a shocking scale and poignantly it was nothing to do with bombing but instead the result of a mass panic caused by the sound of an anti-aircraft gun.

Nor did the wider public know anything about it. Anxious to avoid dampening morale or for the scale of the catastrophe being used as propaganda by enemy forces Winston Churchill used the Official Secrets Act to order a media blackout.

Combined with the traditionally British stoicism of the age it meant the catastrophe was barely discussed, even among the survivors or grieving relatives.

I have thought many times over the years that if we had got that first bus I wouldn’t be talking to you now as we would have arrived earlier and been caught in the middle of the crush.

Babette Clark

“You didn’t talk about it. It was as simple as that,” Babette, now a sprightly 86, recalls. It has taken decades for the voices of the survivors to be heard and for the victims to be commemorated and last Christmas relatives of the dead and their supporters gathered at Bethnal Green for the unveiling of a memorial in time for the 75th anniversary of the disaster.

A striking, inverted replica of the Underground station’s staircase carved with the names of the victims, it hangs near the entrance as a reminder of what happened.

Babette was there when it was unveiled and confides that she shed a tear. “It was very moving. Standing there took me back.”

Born and raised near Bethnal Green she recalls how when the air-raid siren sounded at 8.17pm that Wednesday night she gathered her clothes and blankets and along with her mother and older sister travelled to the bus stop to make the short journey to the Tube station.

Then half built – the platforms were finished but there was no track – people had been using it as a bomb shelter since the Blitz of 1940 and snakes of people descending the stairs via the station’s single entrance was a familiar routine.

“Mum had rented two bunks down there. We had a Morrison shelter but none of us liked sleeping in it so if the siren warning went we would all troop off to get our blanket and pillow and head for the bus,” says Babette.

“On this occasion when we got outside we had just missed a bus and had to wait a few minutes for the next one. I have thought many times over the years that if we had got that first bus I wouldn’t be talking to you now as we would have arrived earlier and been caught in the middle of the crush.”

It was a dank, miserable night as the family made their way from the bus stop through the all-encompassing darkness of the blackout, with two more bus-loads following hot on their heels.

“All of a sudden floodlights came on and the rockets went off,” Babette recalls. “It wasn’t a sound anyone had heard before and it was frightening. That’s what caused the pushing.”

What the crowd didn’t know was that it was actually an anti-aircraft gun in nearby Victoria Park but the whistle of the discarded casings made the East Enders think they were under attack.

Amid mounting panic wave after wave of people pushed forward on the Underground stairs to join the hundreds already gathered below. Yet unknown to them a woman carrying her baby had tripped, causing a pile-up.

“Then it was like a domino effect, everyone just falling on top of each other,” says Babette. Standing near the top of the stairs she and her sister were caught in the crush.

“I was holding my sister’s hand when someone fell on the back of me,” she recalls.

“Someone else was trying to drag her out and I can remember my sister saying, ‘Don’t pull me so hard I’ve got my little sister.’ Then finally an air raid warden got us out.”

She remembers the crying and screaming as well as the heat of the bodies. “It was horrible,” she shudders.

Also caught in the crush with his two brothers was Joseph Walker, now 83 but then just eight. “We all started to go down the steps and I got separated from my brothers,” he says.

‘‘The crowd was getting bigger and I got pushed down the stairs in a wave but luckily my head was clear so I could breathe. It was a long time before we were pulled out. So many were dead around me but someone saw my hand move and I was pulled out. My family were out searching for me.”

Joseph spent nine months in hospital recovering having suffered damage to his spleen, legs, neck and arms. Babette, meanwhile, emerged unscathed along with her sister although there was anguish when after being taken to an air-raid shelter to recover they realised their mother was not there.

“We were wondering where mum was but a little while later she came walking into the shelter. She had been taken into the church opposite. We just felt huge relief.”

Many were not so lucky. Ivy Brind lost her mother as well as her two-year-old nephew Barry, whom she was looking after for her sister-in-law.

“She was holding Barry and saw the crowds at the entrance so she turned to go back home,” recalls her daughter Sandra Scotting. “Unfortunately the tide of people coming towards her just threw her back through the doorway and down the stairs. She lay on her back with Barry in her arms while people fell on top of them.”

Barry died along with Ivy’s mum yet for many years the incident was never discussed. “Mum never spoke about that night and nor did my sister,” says Babette.

In fact all were sworn to secrecy but the truth emerged once children went to school to find empty desks and employees realised their colleagues were missing.

“In many cases they have only been able to tell family and friends what happened to them fairly recently,” says Ivy’s daughter Sandra. “With people being killed at home and abroad in the war they just had to get on with life, yet for the Tube shelter survivors it has been with them for ever. It was a very traumatic event for mum.”

Their anguish was worsened by the discovery that the government also suppressed details about the lack of basic safety measures such as lighting and handrails, details that the council had previously reported to them.

It is one reason Sandra was one of a group of people who set up the Stairway To Heaven charity to establish a suitable memorial, believing that the plaque placed above the staircase entrance on the 50th anniversary of the tragedy was inadequate. That campaign finally came to fruition just before Christmas last year when the memorial was unveiled on a chilly December day.

The ribbon was cut by Joan Martin MBE who was the casualty doctor on duty at the nearby hospital on the night of the tragedy, treating the injured and dealing with many of the victims. She has since sadly passed away at the age of 103, never able to forget the trauma of that night.

“She carried it with her throughout her life stating that it was the worst night of her medical career,” Sandra reveals.

Like everyone else present at the unveiling ceremony to the new memorial Dr Martin took comfort from the fact that now at least those involved in the Bethnal Green Tube shelter disaster will never be forgotten.

For Babette it is a poignant legacy of a catastrophe that she feels could have been avoided: “It happened and it needn’t have happened. It is just very sad.”

The Trump-Russia controversy may put ‘wartime consigliere’ Steve Bannon back in the spotlight https://briefnews.eu/the-trump-russia-controversy-may-put-wartime-consigliere-steve-bannon-back-in-the-spotlight/ https://briefnews.eu/the-trump-russia-controversy-may-put-wartime-consigliere-steve-bannon-back-in-the-spotlight/#respond Sun, 28 May 2017 08:59:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-trump-russia-controversy-may-put-wartime-consigliere-steve-bannon-back-in-the-spotlight/ Steve BannonChip Somodevilla/Getty Images

White House chief strategist Steve Bannon has faded from the public view over the last few weeks as the Trump administration continues to deal with fallout from President Trump’s abrupt decision to fire FBI director James Comey.

Bannon was a prominent behind-the-scenes voice during the election and the presidential transition period. But after a number of policy blunders like the immigration order and Obamacare replacement bill, and ideological spats with Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, it seemed Bannon may be on his last legs in the White House.

That may change following new revelations around the president’s and his associates’ ties to Russia, as well as what critics characterize as the president’s attempts to impede an active FBI investigation into the Trump campaign’s potential collusion with Russia during the 2016 election.

Bannon, known for his nationalist streak and combative style, has been described as a “wartime consigliere” and an avowed enemy of the “deep state,” Democrats, and investigators, Axios reported on Friday.

And the Trump-Russia controversy may just be his time to shine.

“Steve is super savvy dealing with the media and dealing with crises,” Newsmax CEO and Trump confidant Christopher Ruddy told Axios.

Moreover, despite Bannon’s widely-publicized squabbles with the centrist wing of the White House — which includes Kushner and chief of staff Reince Priebus — when it comes to managing crises, the three are able to find common ground against outside threats.

“It is now very clear that there is a unified opponent and that’s ultimately the swamp, both with regard to the deep state leakers, to the partisan opponents and the people who just don’t want to give up their power. That includes the media,” one source close to the process told Axios.

“Obviously, you want [unity] under different circumstances but it’s really united this team and helped bring clarity to their focus,” the source added.

Steve Bannon and Jared KushnerPablo Martinez Monsivais/APBannon will also likely be an active voice in the president’s rumored “war room,” which Axios previously revealed. The goal of the initiative is reportedly to prepare for a potentially “years-long” fight with investigators and the bureaucracy. It willl serve as a way to prop up the president’s legal and communications strategy as his administration continues to push back against mounting evidence that raises questions about the president’s dealings with Russia.

The “war room” will focus on bringing on “experienced veterans from the campaign trail who recognize the gravity of the situation,” a source told Axios.

The Trump administration has been roiled by controversy over the last few weeks, the most recent of which was the revelation that Kushner allegedly met with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak to discuss setting up a “backchannel” between the US and the Kremlin in order to bypass monitoring of their communications.

This latest bombshell is yet “another puzzle piece,” said Keith Whittington, a professor politics at Princeton University. “It provides more reason to worry about the president’s motivations when he made inquiries into the progress of [congressional and FBI] investigations.”

Whittington added that it will also “presumably be harder for the president to distance himself from his son-in-law than it would be in the case of other staffers like Flynn,” which will complicate the administration’s efforts at damage control.

“The question isn’t whether this line of communication was appropriate or not,” said Jens David Ohlin, an associate dean at Cornell Law School and an expert on criminal law. “The question is why Kushner wanted it. Presumably the secret channel would allow the administration to talk to the Russians without the State Department, intelligence agencies, or the rest of the federal bureaucracy knowing about it. Why the need for secrecy from our own government?”

Ohlin suggested that recent developments may point to a “nefarious motive: a radical realignment of US-Russia relations in exchange for Russia intervening in the election to get Trump elected.”

He continued: “I sincerely hope that isn’t true because that would be profoundly disturbing.”

She said ahead of its release: “It’s truly humbling that people still enjoy these songs from so many years ago, reliving the emotions of that time.

“I was after all just doing my job as a singer – and it’s so wonderful for me to hear my songs again so beautifully presented in a completely new way.”
