  • Former President Bill Clinton says Democrats have a shot of holding Congress in 2022.
  • But Clinton warned Republicans will "scare the living daylights" out of swing voters.

Former President Bill Clinton said Democrats can retain control of Congress in the 2022 midterms, but warns Republicans will "scare the living daylights out of swing voters" in an interview with CNN's Fareed Zakaria. 

Zakaria asked Clinton if Democrats, who have seen encouraging signs about their midterm prospects in recent weeks, can break the decades-long trend of the president's party losing control of Congress in midterm elections. 

"Absolutely we could hold both these Houses, but we have to say the right things," Clinton told Zakaria in the interview, which aired Sunday. "And we have to know the Republicans always close well. Why? Because they find some new way to scare the living daylights out of swing voters about something. That's what they did in 2021 when they made critical race theory sound worse than smallpox." 

In 2021, Republicans swept the top three statewide offices in Virginia, which had previously been trending towards Democrats, and put up an unexpectedly strong showing in New Jersey's gubernatorial race partly by mobilizing voters, especially parents, over both the teaching of race in schools and COVID-19 induced school closures.  

"They just scare people," Clinton added. "And in the end, the breakpoint in American politics is not that much different than the 90s. You still have to get those people, it's just that there's so many fewer of them, because as the parties have gotten more ideological and clear and somehow psychically intolerant, they pull more and more people towards the extremes." 

 

Increased polarization and partisanship since Clinton held office in the 1990s means fewer persuadable swing voters and fewer willing to cross party lines. The 2020 election, for example, saw record-low numbers of voters splitting their tickets between elect. But Clinton still argued that "there's some people who are hanging on there and trying to think, and trying to understand what's going on."  

Zakaria also asked Clinton about the recent death of Ken Starr.

The hard-charging special prosecutor, who died at age 76, doggedly investigated the Clintons first in the Whitewater probe, over their real estate dealings in Arkansas. The investigation then zeroed in on Clinton's extramarital affair with then-White House intern Monica Lewinsky, which became the biggest scandal of his presidency and led to his impeachment. 

"Well, I read the obituary, and I realized that his family loved him, and I think that's something to be grateful for, and when your life is over that's all there is to say," Clinton said of Starr."But I was taught not to talk about people that I — you know. I have nothing to say. Except I'm glad he died with the love of his family."

  • Lumber prices fell 4% to a new 2022 low on Tuesday as the housing market continues to cool off.
  • The decline came on the same day Goldman Sachs warned that it expects a continued decline in the housing market.
  • "The sustained reduction in affordability, waning pandemic tailwind, and recent decline in purchasing intentions suggest that home sales are likely to fall further," Goldman said.

Lumber prices fell to a new 2022 low on Tuesday as higher mortgage rates continue to weight on a slowing housing market.

The essential building commodity fell as much as 4% on Tuesday to $ 465 per thousand board feet, decisively below the low seen in early August of $ 470. 

While the decline in lumber may be seen by some as a positive sign that inflation is continuing to cool, it is also indicative of a housing market slowdown that may last longer than expected.

And Goldman Sachs expects just that, as it argued in a Tuesday note the home sales are set to decline further after already cooling significantly since the Fed began its interest rate hikes, which sent mortgage rates soaring above 5%.

"The sustained reduction in affordability, waning pandemic tailwind, and recent decline in purchasing intentions suggest that home sales are likely to fall further," Goldman said. The bank expects existing home sales to fall 12% in August, while it expects new home sales to be flat.

Home prices have remained relatively resilient even as sales have cooled down. But Goldman expects that to change soon.

"Our model suggests that home price growth will slow sharply in the next couple quarters… as the imbalance between supply and demand continues to shrink, mostly through lower demand," analysts said.

Longer-term, Goldman still expects a demographic tailwind from millennials to help support the housing market, but a recent decline in purchasing intentions illustrates how sensitive this group of buyers is to higher mortgage rates.

Still, while Goldman expects housing to slowdown, it doesn't mean a deep recession will follow as it did during the last housing bust in 2007. 

"Past housing downturns have typically been accompanied by economywide recessions, which led to an influx of housing supply as unemployment rose and individuals were forced to sell their homes. However, an influx of supply from this channel seems unlikely this cycle: the labor market remains robust (and likely will, even in a mild recession), and household balance sheets are extremely strong," Goldman said.

As the housing market cools off, so are lumber prices, which briefly surged to a record high of $ 1,733 per thousand board feet in 2021. But if the housing market returns to its pre-pandemic state, so too could lumber prices, which have historically traded between a range of $ 200 to $ 600 per thousand board feet.

Channel 4 viewers were jetted off to Almeria, Spain on Friday as Laura Hamilton tried to find house-hunters Andrew and Sonia their dream holiday home. With a budget of around £160,000, the two were keen on landing a luxurious property complete with large pool, large outdoor areas and stunning scenery. However, given the location’s popularity, Laura had to dish out a “reality check” to the two when they took issue with the first property Laura had to offer.

Andrew and Sonia were pillars of optimism heading into the house hunt, keen to land the perfect property to set them up for future retirement. 

And the first property Laura had up her sleeve appeared to tick the duo’s boxes, complete with a pool, garage and two areas of outdoor space.

However, it became clear as soon as they stepped foot on property number one that Andrew and Sonia had much more idealistic views in mind.

The two-bedroom house was on the market for a newly reduced £158,000, although Laura noted the owner would listen to offers around £150,000.

However, the price still wasn’t enough to win the two over when they began their scan around the house by the pool.

Both Andrew and Sonia commented they’d prefer a bigger pool and more outdoor space – even when Laura pointed out there was a side garden.

And the desire for larger space continued indoors when Laura showed them the stylish and modern kitchen of property number one.

After commenting the kitchen area was a bit too small like the garden, Laura jumped in: “I do have to give a bit of a reality check here.”

Sadly, Laura fared no better with property two, with the pair citing that it would need too much work to be a viable contender.

And property three went completely the other way when Laura showed them the three-bed villa with a large plot of land.

This option was ruled out by Andrew and Sonia for having too much room to manage thanks to the outdoor space.

Andrew and Sonia eventually ended up deciding inland Almeria wasn’t the place for them altogether, with the pair explaining the dry air was causing Sonia health problems.
