Republican lawmakers have warned Apple that it will face intense scrutiny from Congress if the California company procures memory chips from a controversial Chinese semiconductor manufacturer for the new iPhone 14.

Marco Rubio, Republican vice-chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, and Michael McCaul, the top Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said they were alarmed following a media report that Apple would add Yangtze Memory Technologies Co to its list of suppliers for Nand flash memory chips that are used to store data on smartphones.

“Apple is playing with fire,” Rubio told the Financial Times. “It knows the security risks posed by YMTC. If it moves forward, it will be subject to scrutiny like it has never seen from the federal government. We cannot allow Chinese companies beholden to the Communist party into our telecommunications networks and millions of Americans’ iPhones.”

Supergirl Bosses Break Down Final Season Premiere, Warn Kara’s Situation Is ‘Dire’ After Being Sent to [Spoiler] https://briefnews.eu/supergirl-bosses-break-down-final-season-premiere-warn-karas-situation-is-dire-after-being-sent-to-spoiler/ https://briefnews.eu/supergirl-bosses-break-down-final-season-premiere-warn-karas-situation-is-dire-after-being-sent-to-spoiler/#respond Wed, 31 Mar 2021 02:02:10 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/supergirl-bosses-break-down-final-season-premiere-warn-karas-situation-is-dire-after-being-sent-to-spoiler/ Warning: This post contains spoilers from Tuesday’s Supergirl premiere.

Kara, you in danger, girl.

Supergirl rang in its final season premiere with twists, turns and a new threat for our Girl of Steel. Tuesday’s episode, titled “Rebirth,” saw the Super Friends defeat Gamamnae, revive a dying Brainy and reverse the harm Lex caused after using the Obsidian platform to brainwash half the world into becoming devout followers.

Unfortunately for the team, their victory came at a high price: Kara was sent back to the Phantom Zone because Lex is still a supremely evil guy, despite his entertaining antics. The episode wrapped with Supergirl lying on the ground unconscious as a group of Phantoms — who give the Phantom Zone its name — closed in on her.

Without Supergirl’s exact location, the Super Friends have an impossible task ahead of them if they ever hope to see their leader again. For Kara, her banishment will be a test of willpower and inner strength as the Phantoms mess with her mind.

“One of the things that they do is they take people’s hope away from them and give them nightmares,” co-showrunner Robert Rovner tells TVLine. “Her journey there is trying to find hope and a way out in a situation that seems quite dire to her, as it does to the people back in National City. Her friends and her family [are] trying to rescue her at all costs.”

“As you can imagine, there are very strong parallels to what we’ve all been through with COVID,” adds co-showrunner Jessica Queller. “Being trapped in the Phantom Zone alone, isolated with your own thoughts and fears, having no idea when you’ll ever be able to get out and see your family and loved ones again, we’re hoping it’s something that will resonate with viewers.”

Chyler Leigh in Supergirl Season 6With Supergirl lost in the Phantom Zone, the Super Friends will be left to pick up the pieces. As we saw in the premiere, they’ve covered for Kara at CatCo, explaining that she’s with Cat Grant chasing a story. But as time passes and they’re still unable to find her, hope will start to fade for some.

“I think it’s a very emotional arc for all of them,” Rovner explains. “They really don’t know if they’re going to be able to rescue Kara. They start out hopeful, but really struggle with it, especially Alex with the thought that her sister might not make her way back.”

According to Queller, the uncertainty of Kara’s return brings about feelings of “grief, hope and despair.” Though Alex will struggle with her sister’s absence, she’ll at least have Kelly to lean on while processing these complex emotions.

“She’s very united with Kelly, who is helping her, along with the rest of her extended family, shoulder what she’s dealing with. But it brings Alex to a very dark place, as she is faced with the reality that she might never get her sister back.”

With Alex, “it’s been her MO her whole life to protect her sister,” Queller notes. “That’s why she went into the DEO, and that’s why she’s pretty much done everything she’s done in her life. So the feeling of helplessness brings, in the early episodes, a bit of existential despair. The one thing that was her life’s mission to do, if she’s not accomplishing that, then what does it all mean?”

Meanwhile, Lex is back to being human and will soon be faced with the consequences of his abhorrent actions. Rovner says the mega villain’s trial, which comes up in Episode 2, will be “fun to watch.” It will also force his sister Lena to figure out her place within the family.

“She still has her toe in the world of the Luthors, and I think she’s torn between allegiance to family, not her allegiance to Lex,” Rovner explains. “And can she ever break away from that? It’s an interesting dilemma for her, and how does she really free herself from her brother?”

One less thing Lena will have to worry about is where she stands with Kara. Before Supergirl was sent to the Phantom Zone, both Lena and our hopeful hero admitted they were ready to finally make amends. According to Rovner, this road to fixing their relationship will continue if Kara ever makes it back to National City.

“Lena’s definitely Team Supergirl and Team Super Friends, and I think that they’re both looking forward and not looking back. They meant it when they said that they were going to try to repair their friendship,” he notes.

In the show’s final run, the Super Friends will focus on getting Kara back and that will come with its own complications, especially if the Phantoms decide to turn their eyes on Earth.

“Supergirl is facing the Phantoms in the Phantom Zone, and that might be what the Super Friends are facing as well in National City,” Rovner teases.

“Those Phantoms get around,” adds Queller. “The Phantoms just might want to wreak some havoc on Earth.”

ITV GMB stars warn Boris and Corbyn ‘backed into a corner’ over Brexit https://briefnews.eu/itv-gmb-stars-warn-boris-and-corbyn-backed-into-a-corner-over-brexit/ https://briefnews.eu/itv-gmb-stars-warn-boris-and-corbyn-backed-into-a-corner-over-brexit/#respond Thu, 12 Sep 2019 03:19:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/itv-gmb-stars-warn-boris-and-corbyn-backed-into-a-corner-over-brexit/

Brexit has been heavily debated on Good Morning Britain by its hosts and guests ever since the referendum in 2016.

While MPs clashed over the prospect of leaving the EU on October 31 with or without a deal, it seemed as if the only way to solve the parliamentary crisis for a General Election to be called.

However Boris Johnson has now lost two votes in parliament to call for an early election as Jeremy Corbyn announced he wants to avoid an election at the moment.

Speaking to Express.co.uk at the TV Choice Awards, Ranvir Singh and Charlotte Hawkins revealed what they think about the current crisis.

“We’re definitely heading for an election,” Ranvir predicted. “When is anybody’s guess.

“But basically all sides are back into a corner and they’re all fighting for their lives right now.”

Charlotte explained many people were “bored” of Brexit but now there’s been a huge shift in people’s interest in the topic.

She said: “I think we’ve gone through the bit where everyone was bored of Brexit.

“Now it’s getting to the stage where it’s unprecedented, uncharted waters.

“It’s actually got fascinating now because nothing like this has ever happened before.”

However the GMB host was a little more wary to predict what will happen next in UK politics.

“You expect the unexpected,” she remarked. “You never know what’s going to happen next.”

Ranvir added: “Politics isn’t boring anymore, people used to switch off when they saw a politician on air.”

The GMB presenter than made a revelation about Brexit’s impact on the ITV show.

“Now viewing figures for all politics programmes, politics channels, everything is going up.

“For programmes like ours, what’s happening is fantastic.”

If Ranvir could interview anyone in the world of politics, the GMB host dropped a name which may come as a surprise.

Rather than put the Prime Minister in the hot seat, Ranvir opted for Dominic Cummings.

But when she provided her explanation for wanting to grill the PM’s chief of staff, Ranvir appeared to take a swipe at the current government.

She described him as: “The man who’s pulling all the strings at No. 10.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am.

Canada doesn’t trust social networks to warn of election interference https://briefnews.eu/canada-doesnt-trust-social-networks-to-warn-of-election-interference/ https://briefnews.eu/canada-doesnt-trust-social-networks-to-warn-of-election-interference/#respond Thu, 31 Jan 2019 05:04:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/canada-doesnt-trust-social-networks-to-warn-of-election-interference/

Social networks like Facebook and Twitter have set up war rooms and disclosure systems to warn of potential election meddling, but the Canadian government doesn’t believe that’s good enough. The country’s Democratic Institutions Minister has established a panel of five politicians that will warn the public when there’s evidence of attempted interference during election periods, including the upcoming October federal election. If they believe there’s a threat, they’ll not only alert the Prime Minister, party officials and Elections Canada, they’ll hold a press conference to reveal the details to everyone.

The panel will include the Clerk of the Privy Council, the national security and intelligence advisor, and the Deputy Ministers of Global Affairs Canada, Justice and Public Safety. And while other politicians would receive briefings on details, they wouldn’t have the power to stop public disclosures.

This would be limited to serious incidents that are clearly meant to skew the election, such as a fake news video or the email hack that tried to disrupt the campaign of French presidential candidate Emmanuel Macron. Simply put, it would make disclosure a non-issue — the public would learn about interference campaigns on a timely basis, whether or not leaders or social networks are willing to talk.

There’s more in the works as well. Canadian intelligence groups are banding together to form a Security and Intelligence Threats to Elections task force (SITE for short) that would identify foreign threats to elections and help with the government response, regardless of whether or not there’s a formal election period. The country has seen the headaches caused by interference in the US and the UK, and it’s not keen to see a repeat.

Health officials warn not to eat romaine this Thanksgiving because they’re worried about E. coli — here’s what the illness is https://briefnews.eu/health-officials-warn-not-to-eat-romaine-this-thanksgiving-because-theyre-worried-about-e-coli-heres-what-the-illness-is/ https://briefnews.eu/health-officials-warn-not-to-eat-romaine-this-thanksgiving-because-theyre-worried-about-e-coli-heres-what-the-illness-is/#respond Wed, 21 Nov 2018 09:51:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/health-officials-warn-not-to-eat-romaine-this-thanksgiving-because-theyre-worried-about-e-coli-heres-what-the-illness-is/ romaine lettucePhoto by Sean Gallup/Getty Images

  • The CDC warned on Tuesday that Americans should avoid all forms of romaine lettuce because of an E. coli outbreak.
  • E. coli is a species of bacteria that lives in the intestines of people and animals.
  • Some E. coli are harmless and live inside our healthy guts, but other strains can make you sick and cause kidney failure or death.
  • The outbreak the CDC is investigating involves a dangerous E. coli strain that has spread to at least 11 states and Canada. The health agency believes the source of the illnesses is contaminated romaine lettuce.

Once again, if you have any romaine lettuce in the fridge — be it pre-chopped, whole heads, or hearts — the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says you should throw it out. Now.

“CDC is advising that U.S. consumers not eat any romaine lettuce, and retailers and restaurants not serve or sell any, until we learn more about the outbreak,” the agency wrote on its website, just 48 hours out from the biggest nationwide feast of the year — Thanksgiving.

‘Too many men’: Financial Times develops fembot to warn journalists of sexism https://briefnews.eu/too-many-men-financial-times-develops-fembot-to-warn-journalists-of-sexism/ https://briefnews.eu/too-many-men-financial-times-develops-fembot-to-warn-journalists-of-sexism/#respond Thu, 15 Nov 2018 17:58:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/too-many-men-financial-times-develops-fembot-to-warn-journalists-of-sexism/

The Financial Times has a woman problem, or so it thinks. In the push for gender equality, and to reach out to female readers, boffins at the paper have developed a bot that warns journalists when they’re quoting too many men.

The paper, which mostly covers the stuffy, male-dominated worlds of finance and industry, found that only 21 percent of the sources quoted in its articles were women. To combat this, the FT team then developed a bot that trawls articles, scanning pronouns and first names to warn section editors if they aren’t including enough women in their stories, according to a report in the Guardian.

Staff at the paper have been warned that in the future, textual analysis will be used to scan their articles as they type, on the lookout for over-representation of male voices. Presumably, a stern-voiced AI will wag a virtual finger at them if they neglect to include women.

Journalists greeted the woke, feminist robot with glee.

The bot is just one of the Financial Times’ plans to reach out to female readers. The paper is also including more pictures of women, as it claims “women are more likely than men to click through on a picture of a woman.”

More female opinion writers have been hired, and the organization says it is also hiring more writers from different ethnicities and geographic locations, all in an effort to broaden its appeal.

The move has been met with some criticism. “If I quote Aristotle or Plato too much, without referring to women authors too, I’m going to get a warning?,” one philosophy blogger wrote.

Others ridiculed the idea of using a robot to enforce political correctness.

While quoting female experts should be an easy task for reporters covering healthcare, education, and immigration; finding women to comment on, for example, an oil and gas conference in Kyrgyzstan might be a little more difficult. The FT has not said how it would train the bot to study coverage of male-dominated events like these.

The FT is not the first major newspaper to try and address the gender imbalance in its quotations. The Atlantic’s Ed Yong penned a long op-ed this year about his own efforts to track down more female sources in his science stories.

“I don’t buy that journalism should act simply as society’s mirror,” he wrote. “It also pushes us toward a world that could be.”

In striving for that feminist utopia, women in several fields have have compiled lists of female experts for journalists to contact, and hundreds of men have signed a petition vowing not to appear on all-male panels at conferences.

ITV GMB: ‘Car crash’ Fans turn over as Ben Shephard forced to WARN guest in 'rude' debate https://briefnews.eu/itv-gmb-car-crash-fans-turn-over-as-ben-shephard-forced-to-warn-guest-in-rude-debate/ https://briefnews.eu/itv-gmb-car-crash-fans-turn-over-as-ben-shephard-forced-to-warn-guest-in-rude-debate/#respond Sat, 10 Nov 2018 00:16:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/itv-gmb-car-crash-fans-turn-over-as-ben-shephard-forced-to-warn-guest-in-rude-debate/

Friday’s edition of Good Morning Britain is normally a more relaxed affair, as regular presenters Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid have a day off.

Yet today’s instalment of the ITV programme took a very tense turn when journalists Ben Shepherd and Kate Garraway welcomed guests Catherine Cooper and Biba Tanya to the studio for a discussion over whether to give vaccines to children.

Catherine first shared how she supports the use of vaccination with children, and how important the MMR syringe was for her own.

But fellow mother Biba refused to contain her anger at the situation and immediately started shouting in the studio.

Shutting Catherine’s opinions down, the shocking turn of events meant broadcaster Ben was forced to intervene.

“Biba, Biba, Biba, let me stop you,” Ben began carefully.

“Biba, Biba,” he continued, his own voice rising before the guest eventually stopped and listened.

“We don’t want it to turn into a big slanging match because that doesn’t achieve anything,” he warned.

Nodding with a smile, Biba allowed Catherine to continue for barely a second before she started ranting about the MMR vaccine once more.

“No absolutely not, my son contracted measles six months after the MMR,” she yelled angrily. “The effectiveness of this vaccine has been questioned, and I know the vaccine doesn’t work.”

“Treating your children with disease like it’s a magic sanitiser,” Biba spat.

Stepping in to the debate, Dr Hilary offered: “Not true. The year before vaccinations came in, 99 children died in the UK from measles. The scientific evidence is MMR is very safe.”

Unfortunately, Catherine barely managed to get her point across when Ben and Kate were forced to terminate the debate early as the show wound down to a close.

“I told you,” Kate then said. “It’s never a peaceful discussion it always gets people going.”

But viewers were utterly horrified by the segment and took to Twitter to complain.

“When you start shouting above other opinions, you lose the argument! Selfish parent #GMB,” one person wrote.

Another declared: “#GMB wow @GMB our ears are bleeding sorry turned over!! Don’t need shouting first thing in the morning very rude!!!! Let us know when she has gone!!!”

“Sheesh..shame there isn’t a vaccination for downright rudeness… @GMB #gmb poor Dr Hillary! Well done @benshephard want to be a referee when my kids are fighting??” a third agreed.

While a fourth raged: “Wtf was that awkward and absolutely no debate just shouted your head off… well done you can’t beat statistics!!! Jesus sit down. #GMB.”

Some viewers agreed with Biba’s points however, as one one shared: “My brother was affected by the MMR, I would have serious concerns about it too, nothing is completely safe. #GMB.”

Lion Air crash: Australia officials warn NOT to fly with the airline after deadly accident https://briefnews.eu/lion-air-crash-australia-officials-warn-not-to-fly-with-the-airline-after-deadly-accident/ https://briefnews.eu/lion-air-crash-australia-officials-warn-not-to-fly-with-the-airline-after-deadly-accident/#respond Mon, 29 Oct 2018 20:56:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lion-air-crash-australia-officials-warn-not-to-fly-with-the-airline-after-deadly-accident/

Lion Air flight JT610 experienced a deadly accident this morning after the plane crashed into the Java Sea.

No survivors of the 188 people onboard have been located, with an investigation being launched into the cause of the incident.

Until the investigation has taken place, Australia has issued a travel warning in regard to the airline.

They have warned officials not to travel with the airline, until new reports are issued.

A statement by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said: “Following the fatal crash of a Lion Air plane on 29 October 2018, Australian government officials and contractors have been instructed not to fly on Lion Air.

“This decision will be reviewed when the findings of the crash investigation are clear.”

The flight took off from Jakarta at 6:20am and was bound for Pangkalpinang when it crashed just 13 minutes later.

Following a request to emergency land, the plane then dropped off the radar before reports of the crash emerged.

Debris and belonging have been retrieved from the crash site on the water, as well as a number of bodies.

Search and rescue teams are not expecting to find any survivors due to the force of the crash.

The crash has caused concerns as it was a Boeing 737 MAX 8, the airline’s brand new aircraft.

However, Lion Air president Edward Sirait told CNN that plane was “airworthy” after all pre-flight checks were carried out.

Lion Air was banned from flying in EU airspace until 2016 due to issues of safety and management.

Previous crashes with the airline occurred in 2013, in which all 108 passengers survived, and in 2004 when 25 people were killed.

A number of airlines are still banned from flying over Europe for safety fears.

Earlier this year, all Indonesian airlines were removed from the ban list after positive changes were made.

This also includes Garuda Indonesia, which was once prohibited from using the airspace.

There are currently 120 airlines not permitted to fly over, including all carriers from Afghanistan, Nepal and Sudan.

Air Koryo in North Korea and Iran Aseman Air in Iran are also not permitted entrance.

  • Acute Flaccid Myelitis, a polio-like illness affecting mostly young children, is spreading across the US.
  • Officials at the Centers for Disease Control said Tuesday the number of confirmed and suspected cases has spiked in the last month, with now up to 127 cases in 22 states.
  • AFM affects the nervous system, causing paralysis that can lead to potentially deadly respiratory failure.

The outbreak of a polio-like disease called Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM) keeps growing, and medical experts are still baffled as to what is causing the spike of the very rare illness.

Officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention held a conference call on Tuesday, revealing that the number of suspected AFM cases has grown to 127, with 62 of those cases confirmed in 22 states. That’s a stark increase from September 20, when there were just 28 confirmed cases in 16 states.
