Air travel is a major source of carbon pollution, and currently, there’s no real way to stop it (short of grounding flights). Jet fuel made from oil is extremely energy-dense, and while many attempts have been made to blend jet fuel with biofuel, that solution is often prohibitively expensive and hardly carbon-neutral, to boot.

The Paris Agreement didn’t set limits for carbon emissions from the aviation industry, but the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)—an agency of the United Nations that works with the aviation industry in 144 countries—attempted to take up that mantle. The ICAO agreed in 2016 that airlines would be required to buy carbon offsets for every ton of carbon that they emit over and above 2020 emissions projections.

A letter published in Nature Climate Change today suggests that this requirement from the ICAO is not sufficient to mitigate the effects of the aviation industry’s increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Instead, the authors of the letter say the ICAO needs to mandate that the credits that airlines buy meet a specific set of criteria, to ensure that the aviation industry is actually reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Scientists have new plan to fight global warming: dimming the sun https://briefnews.eu/scientists-have-new-plan-to-fight-global-warming-dimming-the-sun/ https://briefnews.eu/scientists-have-new-plan-to-fight-global-warming-dimming-the-sun/#respond Sat, 24 Nov 2018 02:46:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/scientists-have-new-plan-to-fight-global-warming-dimming-the-sun/

Scientists have come up with a new and ingenious way of fighting global warming: use chemicals to blot out the sun. Whether we’ll then have to fight (and do everything else) in the shade, the research doesn’t quite spell out.

Since the world can’t seen to agree on reducing CO2 emissions, why not tackle the problem from the other end, scientists from Harvard and Yale have surmised. The researchers recently published a study which suggests that spraying large amounts of sulfate particles into the Earth’s lower stratosphere in order to literally dim out the sun could cut the effects of global climate change in half, and it might even be cheap!

With all the excitement over the “hypothetical”, “highly uncertain and ambitious,” plan, there are no guarantees that it will not actually make things worse in a catastrophic sort of way. There is a suspicious lack of information about what ‘dimming the sun’ could possibly do to those of us who rely on it for basic things – like growing food, or not freezing to death.

Instead, the study published in Environmental Research Letters discusses the potential costs and necessary technology to realize the ambitious, if not hubristic plan. The researches discuss a variety of potential ways to accomplish the large-scale ‘geoengineering’ project: planes, balloons, or even just shooting the chemicals in the air with large guns.

Even apart from that, there’s a fairly serious problem with the proposal: no aircraft currently exists that could actually deliver the payload. Adapting an existing version of SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy rocket has been ruled out, citing the cost.

The proposal suggests a launch could be accomplished within 15 years, with an initial cost of around $ 3.5 billion, followed by another 15-year running period costing an additional $ 2.5 billion – a relatively low price given the scale and significance of the project, they argue. An initial fleet of 8 ships would initially expand to nearly 100 in order to deploy the necessary amount of chemicals around the world.

There are other less technical drawbacks to the proposal, as well. Among the most obvious is that the plan would require international coordination between numerous countries, including the United States – whose President Donald Trump regularly expresses doubts about climate change in general.

Dr Phil Williamson, an Honorary Reader at University of East Anglia, critiqued the proposal, saying that nations which “continued to experience extreme climate events” might then “consider that solar geoengineering had been responsible” and would need to be compensated. In other words, cutting the earth off from the heavens might be a real liability issue.

Others have critiqued the strategy for being a band-aid response that ignores the actual causes of the problem.

Holiday destinations: St Ives for an art warming spring break https://briefnews.eu/holiday-destinations-st-ives-for-an-art-warming-spring-break/ https://briefnews.eu/holiday-destinations-st-ives-for-an-art-warming-spring-break/#respond Sun, 08 Apr 2018 20:14:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/holiday-destinations-st-ives-for-an-art-warming-spring-break/

St IvesGETTY

Take in stunning sights from Porthmeor beach

The pretty town is deservedly one of Cornwall’s most popular resorts, which means it’s busy in the glorious summer months, particularly with families, as the perfect beaches and rocks hold plenty of interest for curious children.

But out of season, there is still a huge amount to enjoy in St Ives and, best of all, without the crowds you feel as though you’ve got it all to yourself and that it’s your secret.

Apart from the natural beauty of the coast and the beaches – of which there are four in the town and all of them retro-postcard glorious, with huge golden sands for families and surfing for adventure – St Ives features a maze of cobbled streets with cosy cottages (many of which are holiday lets) leading down to the working harbour and shops and restaurants lining the seafront.

One of the town’s major draws is the Tate St Ives, the offshoot of its bigger sisters in London.

It reopened in October last year after a four-year, £20million investment, doubling the space in the building and allowing visitors to see exhibitions in the gallery which sits in the cliffs overlooking Porthmeor beach, and where a new extension, blasted into the cliffs, houses temporary exhibitions.

The original building now has a permanent display, Modern Art and St Ives, dedicated to a whole colony of famous artists who lived in and were inspired by the area.

These include sculptor Barbara Hepworth, whose studio and gardens in the town are open to visitors, and painters Ben Nicholson – Hepworth’s husband – Terry Frost, Patrick Heron and Piet Mondrian.

I was particularly moved by the work of abstract artist Peter Lanyon, whose pieces have his native Cornwall at their heart.

Porthleven shows a fisherman and his wife formed from elements of the local landscape, and show the area in all its rural glory, but with humanity at its heart.

The reinvigorated gallery also has works by non-resident giants such as Matisse, Picasso and Rothko.

Even the café at Tate St Ives is a work of art.

With panoramic views across the town and its beaches from the floor-to-ceiling windows, it’s a great place to unwind and discuss what you’ve seen in the galleries.

DRAMATIC ARTS: A new extension has been built into the cliffs at Tate St Ives

I’d chosen to stay at the Pedn Olva hotel for its spectacular location on the granite cliffs high above the sandy beaches of St Ives.

Unsurprisingly, every room has an amazing coastal view and all have that luxurious coastal charm about them; white walls and bedlinens, stripy curtains, Lloyd Loom furniture and paintings capturing scenes of the area.

The food was as good as the rooms and in the restaurant with a sweeping view over Porthminster beach, I chose local: Cornish smoked haddock with poached eggs and devilled crispy squid and cod loin were excellent.

St Ives out of season means that some of the restaurants are closed, but the town still offers lots of other fantastic eating opportunities.

Porthminster Café, decorated like a Greek taverna, is right on the beachfront.

That said, you can’t go to Cornwall and not have fish and chips – and the Harbour Fish & Chips restaurant does them beautifully fresh, with a tapas-y selection of seafood too.

You can work off the chips with a stroll around St Ives’s brilliant shops.

Among the chains are interesting independents including many art galleries and upmarket interiors stores; Port Of Call has an exquisitely tasteful selection of homeware with a vintage feel.

HEIGHT OF LUXURY: The charming Pedn Olva hotel perches on the granite cliffs high above the town

Johns, on Fore Street, carries an excellent selection of booze – how about some St Ives gin with local flavourings which give it a sea-breeze aroma?

Wind And Sea surf shop has all the surfing gear you’ll ever need, plus relaxed leisurewear with a coastal vibe.

Further up the street is Poppy Treffry, a Cornish designer who employs a team of local ladies to make her quirky embroidered bags, accessories and homewares.

You can bag a cute seagull tote for the beach, £69, or a bone china “Tea By The Sea” mug, £14.95.

You’ll be thirsty for a cuppa after walking around the coast.

I went from the Pedn Olva, along the seafront to Porthgwidden Beach, small and in a sheltered spot, with a delightful two-storey row of beach houses.

From there, it was a steep-ish climb up to The Island – not really an island, but a small peninsula between the harbour and Porthmeon beach.

This is a great spot for birdwatching as it’s a useful stopping-off point for migrating birds and, if you’re lucky, you might see a dolphin in the waters below.

It wouldn’t be a visit to Cornwall without a pasty and there’s plenty of choice of good ones.

You can buy a cuddly toy Teddy Pasty – a felt pasty with a teddy face, who’s also the star of his own children’s books – from the Sloop Studios, but if you want one to eat, you might like the unusual sweet one I had from The Cornish Bakery on Fore Street, stuffed to the brim with apple, rhubarb and custard.

St Ives is the perfect place for a spring break before the crowds descend – as long as you pack a woolly and some wellies.

And like those artists seen in the Tate who made it their home all year round, you will find it very hard to leave too.

One surprise in the international Paris Agreement on greenhouse gas emissions was the addition of the aspirational goal of limiting global warming to just 1.5 degrees Celsius. Nations have long stated that their aim was to avoid exceeding 2-degree warming (though they’ve largely failed to follow through with actions that would make that possible), and so scientists have studied that scenario in great detail. But nobody had been promising to keep this a 1.5-degree world, so the information was lacking.

A new study led by Joeri Rogelj of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis digs into this problem, providing a breakdown of plausible scenarios that will form the basis of future research efforts. This work uses computer models of the global economy to simulate the costs and effects of things like transitioning away from fossil fuels at different paces.

Scenario building

The simulations rely on a set of five scenarios that represent different socioeconomic futures. This includes idealistic scenarios like a world built around sustainability, with a global population of just 7 billion at the end of this century, rather than the expected 10 billion. At the other extreme, there’s an all-consuming world in which energy demand grows rapidly and is fulfilled almost entirely by fossil fuels. This system is a little easier to wrap your head around than scenarios based purely on greenhouse gas concentrations because you can picture what these worlds are really like.

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) – As US influence in Islamabad wanes, Pakistan’s former adversary Russia is building military, diplomatic and economic ties that could upend historic alliances in the region and open up a fast-growing gas market for Moscow’s energy companies.

Russia’s embrace of Pakistan comes at a time when relations between the United States and its historical ally are unraveling over the war in Afghanistan, a remarkable turnaround from the 1980s, when Pakistan helped funnel weapons and US spies across the border to aid Afghan fighters battling Soviet troops.

Google Pixel 2 users report warming phones and shortened battery life https://briefnews.eu/google-pixel-2-users-report-warming-phones-and-shortened-battery-life/ https://briefnews.eu/google-pixel-2-users-report-warming-phones-and-shortened-battery-life/#respond Sat, 17 Feb 2018 09:01:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/google-pixel-2-users-report-warming-phones-and-shortened-battery-life/

If you’ve noticed your Pixel 2 running warm lately or found its battery life to suddenly be shortened, you’re not alone. As 9to5Google points out, Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL users are reporting on Reddit and Google’s Pixel User Community that their phones are having some issues since they installed Google’s February security update. 9to5Google’s Ben Schoon reports that his own Pixel 2 XL has been running warm while in standby mode since the update and that its battery life is noticeably reduced.

Some users are reporting both issues affecting their phones, while others have experienced just one or neither. Some reports say that they’ve experienced greater battery drain, but inconsistently even with similar phone usage. Most complaints seem to point to the problems occuring after installing this month’s security update, though what might be causing these issues is still up in the air.

We’ve reached out to Google about the reports and we’ll update this post when we have more information.

That could have implications for how humanity arrives at climate goals like it did in Paris.

It’s Awards Season™! Time for filmmakers, performers and more across the land to clear some room in their trophy cases, or perhaps go home empty handed. As 2017 winds down and blossoms into 2018, get ready for an avalanche of awards. The Oscars are the granddaddy of them all, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has just narrowed down their shortlist for Documentary Feature Oscar nominations. Five of these fifteen films will land a nomination, but only one will go home a winner. The full Best Documentary Oscar shortlist is below.

Are you ready for the Academy Awards? Even if you aren’t, they’re coming, and there’s nothing you can do to stop them. On Sunday, March 4, 2018, the glitterati stampede across the red carpet in one mad-dash towards award-winning glory. While there are plenty of narrative film-related awards to get excited about – Best Picture, Best Actor and Actress, Best Director and so on – don’t forget the dogged world of documentary features, the nerds of the film world. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences put their noggins together and came up with a shortlist of 15 films in contention for a Best Documentary Feature nomination.

They include City of Ghosts, which “follows the journey of a handful of anonymous activists who banded together after their homeland was taken over by ISIS in 2014”; Al Gore‘s Inconvenient Truth sequel An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power; Jane, about Jane Goodall; Ex Libris, a doc about the New York Public Library; the very timely Icarus, which focuses on Russian sports doping; and more! Surprisingly absent from the list: Dawson City: Frozen Time, a fascinating documentary about the re-discovery of 533 previously-lost nitrate film prints from the early 1900s. I highly recommend it – you can check it out on FilmStruck right here! Alas, the Academy apparently had no time, frozen or otherwise, for it.

Here is the full Best Documentary Oscar shortlist. Five of these films will receive a nomination, which will be announced with the rest of the nominations on January 23, 2018.
