In a recent article that dubbed 2019 as “the year of the vegan,” Economist correspondent John Parker examined the soaring interest in the vegan lifestyle of late, and how it’s impacting multiple industries. A quarter of Millenials today identify as vegan or vegetarian, and companies are working to reach these consumers by accommodating their needs.
In response to people cutting meat out of their diets, McDonald’s has created a McVegan burger. Brands like Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods are making plant-based meat substitutes that actually look, feel, and even “bleed” like the real thing. Even Tyson, the largest meat processor in the U.S., is getting in on the plant-based protein trend.
But, at its core, veganism is more than just a diet. It’s also a system of values that is causing more and more people to consider how other products they use — think clothing, home goods, and accessories — are made. Vegan labels have become prolific in grocery stores and on the boxes of your favorite snacks, but there’s less transparency when shopping for clothing and accessories, making the process a little more difficult.
There are plenty of brands making chic, stylish clothing and accessories that also happen to be cruelty-free. And, plenty of your favorite existing brands have started added vegan options to their offerings. To make it easier for you, we rounded up 9 great pairs boots that are perfect for winter and also happen to be vegan. Whether you’re vegan or not, we think you’ll love — and really want to wear — one of these pairs.
Nordstrom
Finding a replacement for warm, shearling-lined boots may prove a little difficult when you’re shopping vegan. These rainboots are a good option. They’re made with natural rubber from renewable resources (bonus points for sustainability) and lined with a soft fleece to keep your toes toasty on cold days. The thick sole is slip-resistant and adds some insulation between your feet and the cold ground. With a combination of waterproof rubber and a soft, cozy lining, you’re set for cold, snowy days.
Zappos
A comfortable yet durable pair of boots isa winter necessity. Many duck boots have a leather upper, but this pair opts for canvas instead. While not advertised as vegan, these are simply made with canvas and rubber. The entire boot is seriously waterproof, even the seams are sealed to keep out rain, so you can be sure your feet will be kept dry no matter the conditions.
Urban Outfitters
Classic Dr. Martens get a vegan twist. This version of the 1460, the original Dr. Martens boot, is made with 100% vegan leather and finished with a chrome gloss. Everything else is the same — the lace up front, yellow stitching, signature heel loop, and air-cushioned sole have all stayed true to the original.

Among hardcore Star Wars fans, there is one coveted item from the production of the original trilogy that is a rare artifact. No, we’re not talking about any props from the set, even though those are highly sought after items. Instead, we’re talking about a winter jacket given to crew members who worked on the Norwegian set of The Empire Strikes Back on the location that was used to represent the ice planet Hoth.
Normally, getting your hands on one of these original jackets will cost you thousands of dollars, but thankfully, Columbia Sportswear is releasing an updated replica of the jacket that costs significantly less. It’s still a bit of a salty pricetag, but it’s a small amount to pay to show your true Star Wars fandom and to keep warm without cutting open an innocent tauntaun.
Check out The Empire Strikes Back crew jacket below.
The Empire Strikes Back crew jacket from Columbia isn’t an exact replica of the original. Instead, designer Leigh Roundy told StarWars.com:
“It was important to us to make something that felt authentic but not necessarily a direct replica, that had that Columbia appeal. We wanted to make a true, functional piece of outerwear. It was a fun challenge to maintain the overall feel and heart of the original design, but bring it into 2018 with Columbia’s technologies and fabrications.”
Winter coat technology has changed plenty since the original coats were handed out in 1979, so that makes sense. So this jacket is waterproof, breathable, and features a seam-sealed outer layer, along with the company’s patented inner Omni-Heat thermal-reflective lining and insulation. It also features a removable, adjustable hood with removable faux-fur trim, two-way collar, ribbed comfort cuffs, wrist zips, and multifunctional pockets.
But the important details are the patches, which was maybe the most important thing to get right about the jacket:

Now for the bad news. If you want to get The Empire Strikes Back crew jacket, it’ll cost you $ 500. They went on sale at 12am ET overnight at the Columbia website and at select Columbia retail locations in the United States, Canada, Europe, China, Hong Kong, Japan and, Korea. Hit the website to see if they’re still online or check your local Columbia store to see if there are any left:

Or if you’ve got some extra money to spend, Mark Hamill has signed 30 of these jackets that will sell for $ 1,980 at Columbia-branded retail locations in New York, NY, Buena Vista, FL, Downtown Portland Flagship, OR, and Seattle, WA. All proceeds go to college access programs and scholarships, so it’s for a good cause.

A New York Times report warning of an impending bloodbath in Idlib downplays the fact that the Syrian province is controlled by Al-Qaeda affiliated terrorists, portraying the “rebels” as humanitarian-minded administrators.
“Millions of civilians are dreading what comes next” in Idlib, the New York Times reports, after presumably consulting with most of the province’s estimated three million inhabitants. In a true masterpiece of euphemism-infested journalism, the Times has turned the operation to liberate Idlib from a US-designated terrorist group on its head, bemoaning the uncertain fate of the “rebel fighters and their civilian supporters who rose up more than seven years ago demanding regime change.”
Scroll about 20 paragraphs down and the Gray Lady notes with a dismissive air that Syria’s deputy prime minister called these brave fighters “terrorists” (scare-quote credit: NYT) during an interview with Russian (yes, Russian!) television on Saturday. The paper then provides crucial context to help counter this cynical Kremlin soundbite, pointing out that while it’s true that Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), “which is affiliated with Al-Qaeda,” has controlled much of Idlib since 2015, there’s more to Al-Qaeda affiliation than meets the eye. After all, the State Department-designated terrorist group has dutifully acted as “a de facto governmental authority, facilitating trade across the long border with Turkey and organizing aid deliveries.”
Only in paragraph 21 does @nytimes tell readers Idlib "rebel fighters" are Al Qaeda. And that Al Qaeda no longer considered terrorists, but scare-quotes "'terrorists'" who "facilitate trade" and "organize aid deliveries" like a relief agency NGO 👌https://t.co/M0kS9JLZUYpic.twitter.com/TJiWulsvYd

Seventeen years after the September 11 terrorist attacks, the New York Times is now writing articles commending Al-Qaeda affiliates for their aid-delivering abilities. No mention of reports of their chemical weapon stockpiles, however.
Five paragraphs later, the New York Times nonchalantly discloses that HTS – characterized as “rebels”, “fighters”, “rebel fighters”, “rebel forces”, and “Syria’s strongest rebel faction” throughout its mind-melting article – has been “officially declared” a terrorist organization by the United States, European Union and even Turkey.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, for many of these “fighters” – especially “foreigners who have moved to Syria to help defeat the government” – surrender is not an option, the Times informs us.
A “fighter” who spoke to the paper said that he and his comrades were frustrated because “we came for jihad” and not “to have truces and to kneel before the Turks.” The terrorist – sorry, “fighter” – only provided his first name to reporters, “out of fear for his safety.”
And of course, the paper inserts the obligatory swipe at Russia, quoting Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s comment that Idlib is a “festering abscess” that needs to be drained. No mention of Lavrov’s efforts to negotiate a humanitarian corridor that would ensure the safe and orderly evacuation of civilians, however.
In a testament to the newspaper’s complete lack of self-awareness, the article notes that Turkey has “worked” with HTS, “despite its affiliation with Al Qaeda, as both have shared a desire to unseat Mr. Assad.”
Seems like Erdogan isn’t the only one who can overlook a few foibles in the pursuit of regime change.

Cornwall will see thousands of staycationers flock to its sandy beaches during the summer months of 2018.
As the UK’s most southwestern point, the region ends at Land’s End, with the iconic signpost pointing to a number of different destinations.
As staycation holidays look to continue in 2018, the weather forecast for British holidaymakers during the next bank holiday weekend may entice many to head to the coast this May.
The Met Office has predicted much warmer weather.
What is the weather forecast for Cornwall during May bank holiday weekend?
Despite being cooler than the summer months later in the year, the May bank holiday can see great weather nearer the coast.
Showers are to be predicted for the next week with “rain or showers”, although even these will be cut with sunny spells.
The Met Office that “temperatures are likely to be around normal, or perhaps warm at times” towards the weekend.
Leading into June, temperatures are likely to “be above normal” in the first week for the Cornish coast.
James Madden, forecaster for Exacta Weather, said: “Currently June looks like starting on quite a warm and sunny note.”
For Britons heading to Cornwall to chase the good weather this month, the region was voted as one of the happiest places to be in the UK.
A pub lunch in Cornwall was voted the happiest thing to do on holiday, according to The Serviced Apartment Company research.
The BBC weather forecast for the UK predicts there could be another heatwave as soon as next week, thanks to low pressure being pushed by warm west weather.
The average temperature in May is 16 degrees, although this year has been one of the hottest on record.
Last week, the bank holiday temperature exceeded 28 degrees, making it the hottest since the May bank holiday was invented in 1971.
It is also often the driest month with just 54mm of rainfall across the UK, compared to the summer months.
June and August can see over 60mm, despite the warmer weather.
Holidaymakers will have to first plunge through the chill predicted tonight as temperatures plummet.
Rain is expected this week with highs of just 16 degrees following the drop in the east.
Thunder is also expected as well as storms in the southwest of the country.
A 2-1 win over an understrength but nonetheless star-studded Shanghai SIPG meant Victory finished a disappointing Asian Champions League on a high and gave them a shot in the arm for Sunday’s elimination final against Adelaide United.
Mid-season signing Terry Antonis and teenage winger Christian Theoharous starred while midfielder Birkan Kirdar became Victory’s youngest debutant, at 16 years and 70 days.
Muscat left Kosta Barbarouses, Carl Valeri and Lawrence Thomas on the bench while Leroy George, Besart Berisha and James Troisi were left off the teamsheet.
The fringe players took their rare collective chance with both hands, as Theoharous made a compelling case for significant finals role with a dangerous display off the left, appearing to enjoy having the shackles off in a display replete with flicks and tricks, delighting the small but boisterous AAMI Park.
Victory’s defence, led by stand-in skipper Rhys Williams and James Donachie, had their hands full with the Brazilian duo of Hulk and Elkeson but the win will fill them with confidence heading into Sunday’s AAMI Park sudden death showdown.
Making just his third start for Victory, Theoharous was their chief offensive weapon and caused panic in the SIPG defence, with desperate Yu Hao earning a booking.
Midfielder Josh Hope continues to improve, putting in an industrious display and he was forced to work harder than usual with Victory loading the attack by adopting a 4-4-2.
It was also a breakthrough match for Pierce Waring, who played less than 10 minutes prior to Wednesday night.
Kenny Athiu, who continues to improve, whipped in a clever left-foot cross to strike partner Waring, who scored via a generous deflection.
SIPG struck moments before half-time with the roaming striker Elkeson releasing winger Lyu Wenjun who crossed for Lin Chuangyi to finish.
Antonis pulled the strings in midfield and he spotted Jai Ingham lurking on the back post, curling in a delightful ball which Ingham headed the winner into the top corner.
Brazilian legend Ronaldo said playing in China should not preclude Hulk from playing in the World Cup and his entertaining, threatening and bustling 45-minute cameo suggested it’s not beyond the realms.
The sight of Hulk – a fascinating combination of strength, skill and guile – brought the fans into the game, and only Athiu could compare to Hulk’s muscular frame, with Victory needing to triple team him at times.
Capped 47 times for Brazil, Hulk was causing havoc with his piercing runs, as he makes a late play for Russia.
SCOREBOARD
VICTORY 2 (Waring 40, Ingham 68)
SHANGHAI SIPG 1 (Lin 45)
Champions League group match
