Who Wants to Be a Millionaire returned to ITV on Sunday evening with Jeremy Clarkson on hand to provide the questions. However, with the show implementing a “Ask the Host” lifeline, the Grand Tour host is every now and then called upon to provide a helping hand. And in doing so with contestant Norma Perd, he revealed the annoying habit James May and Richard Hammond do that inspired his answer. After sailing past her £1,000 safety net, the stage was set for Norma to make her way to the elusive £1million jackpot. However, just a few questions after securing the £1,000, Norma began to stumble on a number of tricky questions. Especially when she called upon Jeremy to help out with a question regarding the NATO phonetic alphabet. The Who Wants to Be a Millionaire host asked: “In the NATO phonetic alphabet, what is the only letter that is represented by the name of a country?” READ MORE: Richard Hammond speaks out on Jeremy and James replacement in new show [EXCLUSIVE] Norma struggled to definitely land on her answer so needed the Grand Tour host to step in. Jeremy knew right away the answer was D) I, and explained Richard and James were part of his reason why. “It’s like foxtrot, golf, hotel…” Jeremy explained before delving into the story. “I work with James May and Richard Hammond who have pilot’s licenses and that’s – they talk (like that) all the time. And viewers at home were also pleased to hear Jeremy swipe at his co-stars, with one saying on Twitter: “Love it when Jeremy talks about Richard Hammond and James May [laugh emoji] #WhoWantsToBeAMillionaire.” With Jeremy’s help, Norma sailed through to the next round but her time on the show came to a rather disappointing end. Norma made it to the £16,000 mark but stumbled on a question about musicals. Jeremy asked: “Which of these musical was written by the creators of the TV show South Park?” After a 50/50, Norma was left with either Avenue Q or The Book of Mormon as possible answers. And Norma had foolishly talked herself into thinking Avenue Q was the correct answer. So much so, she didn’t use her remaining Phone a Friend lifeline. Jeremy commented it was good for the remaining contestants but not her as Norma was sent home with £1,000. Who Wants to Be a Millionaire continues on Sunday on ITV. When CEOs and business leaders talk about books they’re reading, the lists tend to have one thing in common: little or no fiction. Sure, they’re reading high-minded, important tomes on history, science, innovation and leadership, but that’s not nearly enough. Where have all the novels gone? People simply aren’t reading them like they once did. In the U.K., sales of literary fiction have plummeted in recent years, prompting the Arts Council England to consider subsidizing writers. In the U.S., according to a 2018 study by the Pew Research Center, 24 percent of Americans didn’t read a book or even part of a book in the past year, let alone a novel. This could spell doom for humanity. After all, a large body of research shows a strong link between reading fiction and increased empathy. Since we know reading novels helps us work together, why not make it legally required? If the U.S. Department of Agriculture can roll out dietary guidelines, surely an independent government panel — no partisan Ayn Rand pushers, please — can issue a list of novels all Americans must read. The benefit would be a citizenry that’s less polarized, less biased and more able to cooperate. “What really characterizes us as human beings is our ability to cooperate with each other,” says Keith Oatley. A professor emeritus of cognitive psychology at the University of Toronto and the author of Our Minds, Our Selves, Oatley has done extensive research on the impact of reading fiction. To work together, he explains, we need some understanding of the people we’re cooperating with — whether it’s an individual, a family or a larger group like a community or nation. “The ability to understand other minds is absolutely central to making society work,” says Oatley. “And if you read a lot of fiction, you actually get better at it.”
Reading about a fictional scenario is often better than experiencing it in real life, in terms of the insights shared. Good novels aren’t pedantic. Unlike politics, they have a way of getting us to see another point of view by placing us in the mind of a character, not by telling us what to think. If Facebook lets us marinate in a cozy echo chamber, novels can shake us out of it. So how could this work from a policy perspective? Obviously the government isn’t in the business of telling people to do their homework. Yet. But it has already issued reading lists — and pretty good ones — that are just gathering dust on the Library of Congress website. To go a step further, Washington should pass legislation that incentivizes reading through the tax code. According to Elaine Maag, a senior research associate at the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center, you could potentially create a deduction for every novel read that would apply to middle- and high-income earners (say, $ 10 for any work of fiction, $ 20 for a novel on the list). For low-income earners who don’t pay income tax, you could structure it as a transfer payment like SNAP, the food stamps program, which is administered as a direct payment rather than a tax credit. Recipients would receive $ 20 every time they check one of the books out of a library and return it, along with a completed questionnaire about the book. The biggest problem with the incentive program idea is that you’re likely to see the majority opt out. But because there’s so much evidence that reading novels is a public good, you could treat noncompliance the same way Obamacare handles the individual mandate: If you don’t read a single novel, you pay a tax penalty. No doubt this would sound completely pie-in-the-sky to policymakers, and it wouldn’t be easy to enforce. But the fact is that reading about a fictional scenario is often better than experiencing it in real life, in terms of the insights shared. “If you read George Eliot, she not only describes situations — ‘she said this and he said that’ — but she also allows us into the minds of her characters, and then she has the narratorial voice comment on it,” says Oatley. Those three styles “invite us to join in and have our own thoughts,” he adds. “That’s better than most of us manage just pottering around in the world.” So a must-have for the list is Eliot’s Middlemarch. Others should include Mrs. Dalloway, by Virginia Woolf; Beloved, by Toni Morrison; The Portrait of a Lady, by Henry James; The Remains of the Day, by Kazuo Ishiguro; Americanah, by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie; Gilead, by Marilynne Robinson; A Thousand Acres, by Jane Smiley; War and Peace, by Leo Tolstoy; The Underground Railway, by Colson Whitehead; Life After Life, by Kate Atkinson; The Dream of the Red Chamber, by Cao Xueqin; and any novel or short story by Alice Munro. Before the internet rises up, please know this is a very incomplete list. You can add your own recommendations in the comments below. Politically, socially, culturally — we all know how polarized we’ve become. There’s plenty of data on that, but data can’t save us, and stories can.

One surprise in the international Paris Agreement on greenhouse gas emissions was the addition of the aspirational goal of limiting global warming to just 1.5 degrees Celsius. Nations have long stated that their aim was to avoid exceeding 2-degree warming (though they’ve largely failed to follow through with actions that would make that possible), and so scientists have studied that scenario in great detail. But nobody had been promising to keep this a 1.5-degree world, so the information was lacking.
A new study led by Joeri Rogelj of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis digs into this problem, providing a breakdown of plausible scenarios that will form the basis of future research efforts. This work uses computer models of the global economy to simulate the costs and effects of things like transitioning away from fossil fuels at different paces.
The simulations rely on a set of five scenarios that represent different socioeconomic futures. This includes idealistic scenarios like a world built around sustainability, with a global population of just 7 billion at the end of this century, rather than the expected 10 billion. At the other extreme, there’s an all-consuming world in which energy demand grows rapidly and is fulfilled almost entirely by fossil fuels. This system is a little easier to wrap your head around than scenarios based purely on greenhouse gas concentrations because you can picture what these worlds are really like.

An episode that features Riverdale‘s men in skin-tight outfits rolling around on the floor on top of each other… does this show know its audience or what?
Archie is getting ready for basketball tryouts — shirtless, of course — but when his new FBI pal Agent Adams suggests he find a way to bond with Hiram, he puts on a very revealing singlet and tries out for the wrestling team instead. (Hiram was a wrestling champ back in the day, you see.) But Archie’s plentiful muscles might just be for show: Kevin easily takes him down during tryouts, and Hiram teases him that maybe he’s better suited to a singing career. Archie’s not great at taking a hint, though, so he comes back for more punishment… and Hiram volunteers to show the kids how it’s done, clamping Archie in a headlock and whispering in his ear, “I always win.” (Noted.)
ALMOST anything can be bought and sold online. Even so, sales of ordinary banknotes at a big premium are puzzling. On a newish e-commerce site in Japan called Mercari, ¥10,000 ($ 90) notes were on sale earlier this year for as much as ¥13,000. So bizarre was the phenomenon that it created a furore, leading the firm to ban such deals in April. A rival site, Yahoo Auctions, soon followed suit. The buyers were not indulging a passion for rare banknotes. They simply wanted the money. In need of emergency finance, and having used up all their bank limits, they resorted to buying cash with their credit cards.
The ban has prompted some crafty work-arounds. “Valuable portraits” of Yukichi Fukuzawa, a thinker revered as a guiding light of Japan’s 19th-century modernisation, have been on sale for as much as ¥15,000. That is a hefty premium to the highest-denominated banknote, ¥10,000, which happens to be adorned with Fukuzawa’s likeness. Or take the bottles of water claiming to…

I’ve finally found enough time between e-mails and Skype calls to write up the crazy events that occurred over Friday, which was supposed to be part of my week off. You’ve probably read about the Wanna Decryptor (aka WannaCrypt or WCry) fiasco on several news sites, but I figured I’d tell my story.
I woke up at around 10am and checked onto the UK cyber threat sharing platform where I had been following the spread of the Emotet banking malware, something that seemed incredibly significant until today. There were a few of your usual posts about various organisations being hit with ransomware, but nothing significant… yet. I ended up going out to lunch with a friend, meanwhile the WannaCrypt ransomware campaign had entered full swing.
When I returned home at about 2:30, the threat sharing platform was flooded with posts about various NHS systems all across the country being hit, which was what tipped me off to the fact this was something big. Although ransomware on a public sector system isn’t even newsworthy, systems being hit simultaneously across the country is. (Contrary to popular belief, most NHS employees don’t open phishing e-mails, which suggested that something to be this widespread it would have to be propagated using another method.)
