Although I often write about quantum computing, I mainly write about two forms: gate quantum computing and adiabatic quantum computing. There is a third, though, called quantum walks. Quantum walks are found in nature: a quantum walk is how the electron-transfer step in photosynthesis works. Now researchers have gotten entire clouds of atoms to go marching to their quantum beat.

Quantum walks can be implemented with light, but you would need to make a new computer for every calculation. In a Bose-Einstein condensate, however, the roles of light and matter are reversed. Researchers have used this to demonstrate a BEC quantum walk.

A bevy of quantum computers

Before we get into it, let’s quickly compare the different quantum-computer types. A gate quantum computer is the most familiar. A calculation is performed using discrete logic operations using a collection of gates, and the answer is read out at the end.

The Wandering Hearts crew broke the ice with a couple of G&T’s

“It’s how the band got together, actually,” laughs Tara. “We first met at Tim’s house in Crouch End and I thought I’d break the ice with a few Tesco G&Ts.”

The boys, Tim and AJ, complete the sultry sound of The Wandering Hearts, a band who define themselves as free spirits influenced by country legend Chris Stapleton, and likened to iconic rock band Fleetwood Mac. In 2017, they won the Bob Harris Emerging Artist Award, toured with country icon Marty Stuart and warmed up the crowd at BST Hyde Park before Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks graced the stage.

The Wandering Hearts formed just three years ago in Tim’s home in north London. During their second session together they uploaded a rough recording to SoundCloud and within 30 seconds they had a manager.

Soon after, they signed a recording contract and released their EP Burning Bridges. They were stars in the space of 18 months. It sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? But that’s exactly how it happened.

“When we got the message from our [now] manager we didn’t believe him at all,” says Chess. “How can you when you’re so new to the scene? So we were like, ‘OK, Steve.’ Turns out he was real. We stumbled upon something great and thought, ‘Yeah, let’s roll with it.’” 

And roll with it they did. Released in November, their EP Burning Bridges was a huge hit with UK country fans and their new album Wild Silence is a proper treat for anyone with a penchant for folk, country and Americana music.

“It’s a real showcase of what we do, like a journey from old to new,” says Tara. “All of our songs come from a place of truth. We’ve had life experiences and we’re invested in the music. That’s what creates our sound.” 

The title track isn’t any old pop hit. It’s catchy, that’s for sure, and the story will pull at your heartstrings, as Chess explains, “Sometimes we can’t voice how we feel. Wild Silence is about unspoken feelings that pull people together, like a connection. The lyric is ‘our hearts are the sirens that keep calling out.’”

The Wandering Hearts could see similar popularity to Sugarland in the States

If it wasn’t for their local accents, they could be one of America’s much-loved country bands – Little Big Town or Sugarland perhaps. It’s only since the likes of Ward Thomas and The Shires popped up, that the Brits have warmed to this genre of music.

“See, we don’t choose to write a folk or country song,” says Tara. “People wanted to give us a label early on, but all of our songs are different.” 

Our nation is hooked on pop, rap and rock but, say the girls, country music is making a comeback thanks to its relatable lyrics, “singable” tunes and stories we invest in. “Country music doesn’t shut people out. Everyone can relate to these songs, no matter what age they are,” says Tara. “The singer takes you out of your own head. That’s what I love about it.”

The singers were never hooked to that Nashville-style sound we love them for. It happened by accident, and a bit of influence, too. “We were brought up with different music, from Elvis and The Beatles to Fleetwood Mac. The more we wrote and rehearsed together, our sound just arrived,” says Chess.

They’re not about to copy the US country stars, either. Their British roots are in the spotlight, and so too, are those long vowels. Listen out for the word “can’t” and you’ll understand.

Before the foursome joined forces, Chess played guitar and dabbled in theatre, while Tara taught singing and gigged with her musician boyfriend. Two years ago, these women were complete strangers and now they share their lives together, either at their home from home, their recording studios in Hackney, or in the van en route to their next sell-out show.

“Me and Chess have a little routine,” giggles Tara.

“We have matching Primark pyjamas, lavender pillow spray and hot water bottles. We fight about music in the van, from 90s R&B to Dolly Parton or The Smashing Pumpkins – anything goes.”

The group have set their sights on the states and intent to wow country music birthplace Nashville

This year, The Wandering Hearts are jetting off to Nashville to share their sound with the birthplace of country music. Then it’s their album tour and, along with world domination of course, their big dream is to work with legendary American singer-songwriter Chris Stapleton.

“We hope to see him when we’re out there in June. The idea of meeting him and writing with him would make our heads fall off,” says Chess. 

If breaking Britain was this easy, surely America will be a walk in the park for The Wandering Hearts? “We’re never going to beat the Americans at their own music, but we will be proud of what we do,” says Tara. “We’ll stay true to our roots, but it’s quite difficult not to sing some things in an American accent.”

“70s retro is coming back,” smiles Chess, shrugging on her faux fur coat, “and so is country music.”

The deportation comes after a North Korean soldier was shot trying to defect.

Bruce Byron Lowrance, a Michigan resident, came to the region because of the ongoing confrontation between North Korea and the international community over the country’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile program. South Korean officials said he told them he wanted to help resolve the dispute.

After a tip-off from a villager, Korean soldiers caught the man entering a civilian-controlled area just south of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) without special government approval on November 13.

Lowrance wasn’t carrying any suspicious belongings other than extra underwear at the time of his arrest, and didn’t have any equipment necessary to scale the barbed wire fences installed along the DMZ, according to South Korean military officials.

South Korean Army General Suk Wook told lawmakers Lowrance came to the country on November 3 and was believed to have stayed in Seoul and Munsan, a border community not far from the Joint Security Area, the point of contact between the North and South Korean militaries.

The general said Lowrance made “confusing or contradictory statements” to Korean investigators after he was found, according to the Los Angeles Times.

His trip to South Korea comes at a time of heightened tensions between the United States and North Korea. President Donald Trump declared North Korea a state sponsor of terrorism on Monday. The designation will allow Washington to impose further penalties on Pyongyang, as part of the US pressure campaign against North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs.

In September, the Trump administration sanctioned eight North Korean banks and 26 individuals said to act as their representatives in various countries, including China, Russia, Libya and the United Arab Emirates. A week prior, Trump signed an executive order targeting North Korea’s access to the international banking system.

The same day Lowrance was arrested, North Korean troops in the same western portion of the DMZ fired at a comrade who fled to the South at a jointly controlled DMZ area. The soldier, identified only by his surname as Oh, was shot five times and was in serious condition at a South Korean hospital following two rounds of surgeries.

“The patient is not going to die,” trauma surgeon Lee Cook-jong told reporters at Ajou University Hospital, south of Seoul, according to the Washington Post.

Surveillance footage released by the US military in Korea on Wednesday showed Oh driving a jeep southward, before getting stuck in a ditch just yards from the DMZ. Oh jumped out and started running for the line as four North Korean border guards tried to stop him by firing more than 40 rounds at him. The video showed Oh lying wounded in a pile of leaves against a building on the southern side. Then three South Korean soldiers crawled out and dragged him to safety.

Americans have been occasionally arrested after entering North Korea illegally from China but a US citizen trying to get in from South Korea is unusual. In 2014, another American was arrested by South Korean soldiers for allegedly trying to swim across a river to North Korea. South Korean media described him as a 29-year old-computer repairman from Texas who hoped to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Although hostilities in the Korean War were halted following a July 1953 armistice, a peace treaty has never been signed. The Korean Peninsula remains technically at war, with about 28,500 US troops stationed in South Korea to deter “potential aggression” from the North.

Thirty years after a reactor exploded at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine, radiation is still turning up in some unexpected places: for instance, in the wild boars tramping through the mountains of the Czech Republic — almost a thousand miles away.

These radioactive boars aren’t turning into teenage mutant ninja pigs, but they aren’t safe for eating, either. That’s a problem in a country where boar meat is mixed into stews and goulash. In fact, the wild boars are being irradiated by their own food: the wild mushrooms they depend on during the cold winter months, Reuters reports.

The 1986 nuclear disaster in Chernobyl, Ukraine spewed the radioactive metal cesium-137 into the atmosphere. A small amount blew nearly 1,000 miles west to the Czech Republic, where it settled into the soil. There, mushrooms absorb it. And when a boar eats the mushrooms, the radiation travels up the food chain. A few years ago, a government report revealed that nearby in Germany, about one in three boars killed by hunters were radioactive.

For people, cesium-137 is not safe for consumption. Eating it spreads the radioactive atoms throughout the body, which can up your risk for cancers. Still, if you were to eat some of the radioactive boar meat, the dose is likely low enough you’d probably be OK, Jiri Drapal at the State Veterinary Administration told Reuters. But if you were to eat the cesium-137-flavored meat multiple times a week for months on end, then you might be in trouble.

And, the best bet is not to eat any, which is why food inspectors in the Czech Republic screen wild meat before it goes to market. They discovered that nearly half of the 614 pigs inspected between 2014 and 2016 were too radioactive to eat. The hazardous meat is banned from use, so if you visit the Czech Republic and eat wild boar goulash, you should be safe.
