However, arguably the biggest test arguably came in the final scenes of season three when Wendy sacrificed her own brother Ben (Tom Pelphrey) for the benefits of the cartel and safety of her family.

Wendy was visibly distraught by the decision but the fact she took it was one that proved her loyalty to Omar Navarro (Felix Solis) and place within the cartel’s hierachy.

But this kind of drastic action is one that seems worlds away from the Wendy of season one, proving the incredible transformation to have taken place within Linney’s character.

And should she continue on this path in season four, will she need Marty? Bateman weighed in recently during a virtual panel.

Enlarge / Finding a distraction is key for young children trying to resist the marshmallow. (credit: Igniter Media)

The psychologist who famously demonstrated the importance of being able to delay gratification to achieving later success in life died on September 12 in New York City. Walter Mischel, emeritus professor of psychology at Columbia University and self-proclaimed “Marshmallow Man,” was 88.

Per Columbia University’s announcement:

“Professor Mischel is revered for his work in self-regulation. He is the author of the popular book The Marshmallow Test: Mastering Self-Control. In it, he describes his groundbreaking studies of young children in the 1960s and 1970s, during which they were given the choice between receiving one immediate treat and receiving two treats 15 minutes later. The tactics used by the youngsters to distract themselves had implications for delayed gratification in adults. For example, when faced with the urge to smoke or a choice between arguing versus compromise, Mischel recommended keeping a goal in mind and focusing on the consequences of losing self-control.”

Mischel’s landmark behavioral study involved 600 kids between the ages of four and six, all culled from Stanford University’s Bing Nursery School. He would give each child a marshmallow and gave them the option of eating it immediately if they chose. But if they could wait 15 minutes, they would get a second marshmallow as a reward. Then Mischel would leave the room and a hidden video camera would tape what happened next.

On the July 24, 2018 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor-in-chief Peter Sciretta is joined by /Film Managing Editor Jacob Hall, Weekend Editor Brad Oman, senior writer Ben Pearson and writers Hoai-Tran Bui and Chris Evangelista we’ll discuss what we’ve been up to at the Water Cooler and answer some listener mail in The Mail Bag.

In The Mail Bag:

  • Jorge Z from Australia writes in “I am 42 years old and as you all mentioned, time changes us. Not only that, having kids changes us even more. I don’t really know what my opinion would be if I was 42 with no kids. I do know that if I was 28 I would be frustrated about all of this. The point that I am trying to get to is that now having kids, even with the guy apologising, I would be very uncomfortable if I learned that he and my children were in the same room. Then I thought to myself, what about my friend with kids and my friends without kids? What do they think about it? I can tell you the the opinion of my friends without kids varied and most of them said: I don’t know what to think of this; maybe it was an overreaction. “
  • Carrie P writes in “I finished listening to your episode on the firing of James Gunn. I have been a podcast subscriber for a couple of months and enjoy and respect everyone’s opinions.  I will play devil’s advocate you sometimes do. I have been in education for 14 years and there is a federal push for teaching digital citizenship. We are doing our best to educate our students that the footprint they leave on social media can have a huge effect on their future. A lot of teenagers are fans of Marvel and James Gunn. This might be a good learning experience for them to see how comments they have made in the past can keep them from potential jobs and future successes.”
  • L from Texas writes in: “I just thought I would share some thoughts on your discussion of cleaning up after yourself in a theater. I worked in a theater for 6 years most of that time I spent as an usher. At the chain I worked at we were cross trained but each shift we were in a specific area so if you were working an usher shift you were an usher and the same goes for Box Office, Concessions and Booth.  The chain I worked at had a system for cleaning theaters, on the busy nights and days, which was called the ten step system in which if you have at least five usher working to clean a theater it would go like this.  1 – Gather all supplies 2- Turn on cleaning lights  3-2 ushers go to the top of the theater and alternate rows picking up any “big trash” your popcorn bags food containers drinks basically anything big enough to pick up and throw in the trash  4 – Clean any wet or stick spills – The big trash users would let one of the other users know that there was a need for a mop and then it would be cleaned 5- once the 2 ushers for step 3 are about 5 rows down 1 or 2 ushers with a large push broom will go down each row and get all the popcorn and other debris from under and in front of the seats  6 – 2 ushers will go down each side and sweep up the piles left by the #4 ushers and also spot check to make sure there is nothing left in the rows 7 – wipe down any seats that need it and return them to the correct position 8 – Vacuum any carpet that needs vacuuming ( we usually just had hand powered vacuums 9 – Empty the trash cans outside the theater  10 – Cleaning lights off and inform the podium the theater is ready to seat I know this was long but all this to say that if everyone would just take what ushers would consider “big trash” out with them we could eliminate an entire step here and theaters would get cleaned faster.  I will say that there is a lot of down time for ushers when it is not busy or theaters are not that busy but having been a manager as well I know that there is always something that an usher can be doing to keep the theater clean and organized and the managers can always find something for them to do while they are on the clock. So don’t worry about someone losing their job just because you took you popcorn bag out to the trash!”

Scorpion Sneak Peek: Can Paige Help a 'Dopey' Walter Save Toby's Life? https://briefnews.eu/scorpion-sneak-peek-can-paige-help-a-dopey-walter-save-tobys-life/ https://briefnews.eu/scorpion-sneak-peek-can-paige-help-a-dopey-walter-save-tobys-life/#respond Mon, 26 Feb 2018 16:27:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/scorpion-sneak-peek-can-paige-help-a-dopey-walter-save-tobys-life/

This week on CBS’ Scorpion, the team’s smarties turn a bit dumb, putting Paige in an especially unique position to save the day.

In the fantastically titled episode “Dumbster Fire” (airing tonight at 10/9c), Walter, Toby, Happy and Sylvester are deep underground on assignment — to prevent no less that the creation of a black hole — when their time spent subject to increased air pressure impairs their mental faculties.

In the sneak peak above, for example, a simple homonym sends Sylvester off an a musical tangent, as the team races to resuscitate an unconscious Toby by vacuum-sealing his head. (It’s a long story.) Can Paige, running comms from topside, get the team back on track? That is, when she isn’t being moved by “dopey” Walter’s enhanced EQ? Press play above to watch the ex-waitress work her science-simplifying magic.

Seth Rogen Will Play Walter Cronkite for David Gordon Green https://briefnews.eu/seth-rogen-will-play-walter-cronkite-for-david-gordon-green/ https://briefnews.eu/seth-rogen-will-play-walter-cronkite-for-david-gordon-green/#respond Tue, 12 Dec 2017 09:18:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/seth-rogen-will-play-walter-cronkite-for-david-gordon-green/ Seth Rogen as Walter Cronkite

Seth Rogen joining a David Gordon Green movie is not surprising news – they previously collaborated on the very funny stoner comedy Pineapple Express. David Gordon Green making a movie about legendary newsman Walter Cronkite and CBS News on the day of John F. Kennedy’s assassination is not surprising news – he is a versatile filmmaker who has floated between genres with ease. What is surprising news is that this film, titled Newsflash, will see Green directing Seth Rogen as Walter Cronkite. There’s no getting around it: that’s just downright wacky casting.

Deadline has the news, reporting that Rogen and Green are the only talent confirmed to be attached to the film at this point, which will be produced by Greg Silverman’s Stampede Ventures. Ben Jacoby wrote the screenplay, which is set entirely on November 22, 1963 and takes place in real time as CBS reporters struggle to make sense of the news coming out of Dallas, Texas, where President Kennedy was shot by a gunman. The drama will come from Cronkite and his team attempting to figure out exactly what went down in Dallas, following them as they cut through rumors and misinformation to get to the truth of the story.

Deadline reports that Mark Ruffalo is being courted for the role of Cronkite’s producer, Don Hewitt. Bryan Cranston is being sought for Jim Aubrey, Cronkite and Hewitt’s boss.

The first and most obvious comparison film comparison here would be Steven Spielberg’s The Post, another modern film that tells a famous story of journalistic responsibility (which feels more relevant than ever in 2017). The second point of comparison would be Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs, which examined the title character via three extended scenes that take place in real time. The latter also starred Rogen in one of his best dramatic performances as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak.

But Wozniak, a computer geek and engineer, is still very much a man carved out of a Rogen-esque mold. Quite frankly, Rogen has never played a character quite like Cronkite and if you watch the famous footage of him delivering the news of JFK’s death, it’s borderline impossible to visualize him in the role.

But that’s also why this news is so very interesting. Although he got his start playing stoners and slobs in Judd Apatow productions, Rogen has grown as an actor over the years, showcasing an ever-expanding versatility. He’s terrifying in the bleakly hilarious Observe and Report, moving in the cancer drama 50/50, and his pitch-perfect deadpan sells some of the best moments in The Disaster Artist. Rogen is a terrific performer, an artist who has showcased an obvious desire to go above and beyond what we expect from him, and I couldn’t be more intrigued to see him attempt to vanish into the role of one of the most famous and respected men of the 20th century.

And vanish is what he’ll have to do, because Seth Rogen looks nothing like Walter Cronkite. He sounds nothing like him. He’s 12 years younger than Cronkite was in 1963. There’s nothing I want more than to be pleasantly surprised by this. I’m rooting for you here, Mr. Rogen. Godspeed.

Green is currently shooting the new Halloween movie, but the current plan is for Newsflash to shoot next year, with the finished film possibly being ready for November 22, 2018, the 55th anniversary of Kennedy’s death.

Watford make Hull boss Marco Silva first-choice target to replace Walter Mazzarri https://briefnews.eu/watford-make-hull-boss-marco-silva-first-choice-target-to-replace-walter-mazzarri/ https://briefnews.eu/watford-make-hull-boss-marco-silva-first-choice-target-to-replace-walter-mazzarri/#respond Wed, 17 May 2017 23:18:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/watford-make-hull-boss-marco-silva-first-choice-target-to-replace-walter-mazzarri/

The Hull boss has a release clause in his contract allowing him to remain in the Premier League following their relegation.

And the Hornets have wasted no time in targeting the Portuguese coach following their decision to axe Mazzarri yesterday.

Silva, due to hold talks with his Hull bosses today, could become Watford’s ninth manager in just five years. The 40-year-old fits the profile of the type of forward-thinking coach Watford want.

Leicester’s Premier League winning boss Claudio Ranieri and fellow Italian Roberto Mancini have been mentioned in the Vicarage Road corridors and are also being considered by trigger-happy owner Gino Pozzo. But Silva is the front-runner.

Despite failing to keep Hull in the top flight, Silva’s impact on and off the pitch has not gone unnoticed.

Mazzarri, less than 12 months into his three-year contract, had been expected to be given another crack at Watford next season.

It is believed his relationship with his players has deteriorated in recent months.

Troy Deeney, Watford’s influential skipper, was angered at being dropped three times since March.

Deeney and team-mate Stefano Okaka were also involved in an angry post-match bust-up after the Monday’s defeat at Chelsea – the 55-year-old’s final game in charge.

His failure to speak English along his unconventional and strict training ground methods have raised eyebrows.

And with results having fallen away following five straight defeats, Watford decided to pull the plug following showdown talks yesterday.

Hornets chairman Scott Duxbury said: “After the board discussed with Walter Mazzarri the club’s future goals and aspirations, it was decided he will be stepping down.

“We thank Walter and his staff for the contribution they have made to Watford Football Club over the past year.”

Mazzarri’s final game in charge will be at home to Manchester City this Sunday.

News that he will not be in charge of Watford next term emerged after it was claimed that a host of key players would quit the club in the summer if the Italian did not leave.

Ranieri, meanwhile, would certainly be no stranger to the Pozzo family owners. He continues to held in high regard following his unexpected Premier League title success with Leicester and his departure is still regarded as unjust by many Foxes fans.

At 65, Ranieri offers both experience and stability, as well as charming the dressing room and keeping an eye on helping move the Hornets up the table.

Mancini had spells at both Galatasaray and Inter Milan after leaving Manchester City in 2013. He would offer instant knowledge of the English top flight, but whether or not he would relish the chance to be fighting for points to get up the league rather than stay ahead of the chasing pack remains open for debate.

Walter Mazzarri to LEAVE Watford on Sunday with Claudio Ranieri favourite to replace him https://briefnews.eu/walter-mazzarri-to-leave-watford-on-sunday-with-claudio-ranieri-favourite-to-replace-him/ https://briefnews.eu/walter-mazzarri-to-leave-watford-on-sunday-with-claudio-ranieri-favourite-to-replace-him/#respond Wed, 17 May 2017 14:22:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/walter-mazzarri-to-leave-watford-on-sunday-with-claudio-ranieri-favourite-to-replace-him/

The Italian boss took training this morning then met club chiefs for talks with tensions around Vicarage Road high.

The Hornets board had been made aware that a number of players would try to leave if Mazzarri remained in charge.

Mazzarri still hasn’t learnt English – he has continued to speak Italian in his press conferences – and that in itself has annoyed players. That, coupled with a lack of days off, has left the squad calling for Mazzarri to go.

Mazarri joined Watford in June having previously been in charge of Inter Milan. He has managed 40 games, winning 12, drawing seven and losing 21.

The 55-year-old signed a three-year deal last year – but will leave after just one campaign.

Chairman Scott Duxbury released a statement this afternoon which read: “After the board discussed with Walter Mazzarri the club’s future goals and aspirations, it was decided he will be stepping down from his position as the club’s head coach after the final game of the 2016/17 season.

“We thank Walter and his staff for the contribution they have made to Watford Football Club over the past year.”

Former Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri has been chalked up as the bookies’ early favourite to replace him.

Alan Pardew, Nigel Pearson (both 8/1) and Kenny Jackett (12/1) are also in the running.

There’s also the possibility Watford could move for Hull boss Marco Silva.

Sceptics slammed the decision to appoint Silva in January but he impressed during his five-month spell in charge of Hull.

Watford are 16th in the Premier League having lost 4-3 to Chelsea on Monday. They have taken just three points from a possible 21.

Spaniard Quique Sanchez Flores was sacked by Watford last summer – despite guiding the club to the FA Cup semi-finals and comfortably retaining their status in the top division.

Slavisa Jokanovic departed a year earlier after leading Watford into the Premier League.

Mazzarri was the seventh Watford manager hired by the Pozzo family since they bought the club in 2012.

‘Alien: Covenant’: Apple Style Ad for Their Advanced Android Walter https://briefnews.eu/alien-covenant-apple-style-ad-for-their-advanced-android-walter/ https://briefnews.eu/alien-covenant-apple-style-ad-for-their-advanced-android-walter/#respond Sat, 11 Mar 2017 12:29:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/alien-covenant-apple-style-ad-for-their-advanced-android-walter/ Alien Covenant Android Video

In addition to the terrifying Xenomorphs that kill off countless characters across the franchise, the Alien films are also known for introducing advanced android characters that can be nearly indistinguishable from humans. Alien: Covenant is no different as we’ll be meeting Walter, the next generation of the android David from Prometheus.

To introduce audiences to the new advanced android, 20th Century Fox has released a viral ad for Walter (played by Michael Fassbender) in the style of an advertisement that you might see for the latest Apple product, complete with some familiar fonts. Ridley Scott‘s son Luke Scott (Morgan) directed the ad, and it’s honest kind-of haunting.

Our own Jacob Hall visited the set of Alien: Covenant last year, where we learned a lot about the latest presumably doomed mission of the Weyland-Yutani corporation, including  details on Michael Fassbender’s new android.

The android David resulted in some backlash (because he was totally creepy and weird), so Walter has been created without human emotions. This makes him a little more stilted than his previous version, unable to understand the concept of being friends with Kathertine Waterson‘s character Daniels. Fassbender himself described him as being somewhat similar to Spock, though even less personable since Walter is seen as a tool by the rest of the crew, with many of them taking no consideration of him being anything like a person.

If you want to know more about Walter, there’s a whole viral site that has been set up as if Walter was a real product that you could buy. You can even reserve your own unit, and you’ll get an e-mail that gives you a confirmation code, promising that Walter will be ready for delivery sometime in April. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like Fox is going to send any swag for signing up, but they’ll probably have some interactive site where you can create your own Walter.

Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created, with ALIEN: COVENANT, a new chapter in his groundbreaking ALIEN franchise.  The crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world.  When they uncover a threat beyond their imagination, they must attempt a harrowing escape.

Alien: Covenant arrives on May 19, 2017. Footage from the film is screening at SXSW, so we’ll be back with a full report on that.

And if you’re at SXSW, keep an eye out for this poster, which you might be able to get your hands on:

Alien Covenant - Walter Poster

For those curious, here’s the full press release about Walter:

LOS ANGELES, CA – March 10, 2017 – Twentieth Century Fox’s (FOX) much anticipated, action-thriller, “Alien: Covenant,” hitting theaters May 19th, marks visionary director Ridley Scott’s return to the universe he created. Continuing to enthrall fans, FOX has tapped Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) to be the official CPU/GPU partner for “Alien: Covenant” and today will release its branded short, “Meet Walter” that stars Michael Fassbender as his character Walter. As the centerpiece of the #MeetWalter campaign, this short introduces Walter, the latest synthetic android with intelligence powered by AMD (NASDAQ: AMD), RyzenTM and RadeonTM processors, and manufactured by the film’s fictional corporation Weyland-Yutani.

The short, conceived by Ridley Scott and 3AM, produced by RSA Films with technology partner AMD and directed by Luke Scott, showcases Walter as the world’s most advanced synthetic companion, created to serve and designed to help achieve a better human experience with intelligence. As part of the campaign, a limited-edition poster debuts online and at SXSW, plus a Twitter activation allows users to tweet #MeetWalter to receive a personalized video autoreply from Walter.

“Partnering with AMD, one of the world’s leading technology companies, for our film’s ‘Meet Walter’ campaign aligned perfectly with our vision of the incredible potential of AI that Michael so wonderfully brings to life through Alien: Covenant’s Walter,” said Ridley Scott. “In AMD we have a partner at the forefront of developing and implementing artificially intelligent technologies, showcasing where the future of AI may well be heading. Bringing AMD into our longstanding collaboration with 20th Century Fox on the Alien films is inspiring and exciting.”

“AMD is at the forefront of advancements in AI, machine learning and at developing technologies which are used every day,” said Zachary Eller, Senior Vice-President, Marketing Partnerships. “Given their amelioration in these technologies, we knew this was the perfect partnership for our film.”

“Once we saw the great connection between ‘Alien: Covenant’, the ‘Meet Walter’ short and AMD processor technologies, including AMD SenseMI technologies in our new Ryzen processors, and our Radeon Instinct accelerators, this technology collaboration with Twentieth Century Fox and Luke Scott was one we couldn’t resist,” said Jim Anderson, SVP & GM Computing & Graphics Business Group.

“Alien: Covenant” follows the crew of a colony ship bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy that discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world. When they uncover a threat beyond their imagination, they must attempt a harrowing escape. The ensemble cast includes Michael Fassbender (The “X-Men” Franchise), Katherine Waterston (“Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them”), Billy Crudup (“Almost Famous”) and Danny McBride (“The Angry Birds Movie”). In addition to directing, Ridley Scott serves as producer along with Mark Huffman, Michael Schaefer, David Giler and Walter Hill.  The screenplay is by John Logan and Dante Harper from a story by Jack Paglen and Michael Green.
