Walmart has abandoned its plans to launch a new streaming video service, according to a report from CNBC. Instead of throwing resources behind a new product, the company will instead focus its attention on expanding its existing video platform Vudu. In response to the report, Walmart told Variety that Vudu is its focus but “to say that we aren’t thinking about different ideas often would be false.”

Rumors of Walmart getting into the streaming business started last year when the retail giant had its eyes on competing with Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. At one point, Walmart was reportedly was in conversations with media executive Mark Greenberg, the former President and CEO of Epix, about creating a streaming platform that would target “Middle America.” The concept was boosted by the (short-lived) success of the Roseanne reboot and the groundswell of support for the cancelled Last Man Standing.

Vudu has always been a bit of an afterthought in streaming since Walmart acquired the on-demand video service in 2010. Rather than offering a streaming library for a monthly subscription fee, Vudu lets users watch rent or buy individual shows and movies. According to a report from Variety last year, the platform is the third-largest pay-per-view digital video service in the US, trailing Apple’s iTunes and Amazon Video. Walmart announced last year a plan to start producing original content for Vudu.

Walmart is expanding its experiments with self-driving grocery deliveries courtesy of a new trial in Surprise, Arizona. In the wake of its partnership with Ford, the retailer’s latest pilot will use startup Udelv‘s autonomous cargo vans “custom-made” for food drop-offs.

When the trial kicks off later this month, Walmart customers can have their groceries driven over by Udelv’s second-generation vehicles (dubbed “The Newton“) by placing orders online. The driverless vans are powered by Chinese internet giant Baidu‘s updated self-driving platform, Apollo 3.5.

Walmart claims it has a store within five miles of 70 percent of the US population. And, outside the realm of trials, it pushed to make deliveries to 100 cities by the end of 2018 — with help from Postmates and DoorDash. That could be down to the Amazon Prime effect, but Walmart’s brick-and-mortar empire means it has different challenges to overcome that its e-commerce rival. After halting its deliveries with Uber last year, and hiccups with its employee-based dispatches, it’s clearly banking on self-driving cars as the future.

The bodies were discovered last Thursday after a 911 call from a tipster concerned about Mary’s whereabouts sent Effingham County sheriff’s deputies to the home of Elwyn Crocker Sr. and family. While several members of the household claimed the girl had run away to live with her mother in South Carolina, their stories did not add up, and deputies spent the night digging up the Crockers’ backyard.

Preliminary autopsy results indicate that Mary was in the ground for “perhaps a few months,” while Elwyn Crocker Jr. had been buried “for maybe as long as two years,” according to Effingham County coroner David Exley, who lamented that the amount of time elapsed since the burials could complicate efforts to determine the causes of the children’s deaths. These dates correspond to the last local sightings of the children – Mary hadn’t been seen since October, while Elwyn was last spotted in 2016.

The entire Crocker family – Elwyn and wife Candice, Candice’s mother Kim Wright and Wright’s boyfriend Roy Anthony Prater – have been charged with first-degree child cruelty and concealing a death. They will likely face further charges and all are being held without bail. Prater was also charged with possession of a controlled substance.

Elwyn Sr. most recently worked as a Walmart Santa Claus in the neighboring town of Rincon, much to the horror of his neighbors. The dead children’s mother is believed to be homeless in South Carolina, and authorities are still trying to reach her. A special-needs child, believed to be the biological offspring of Elwyn and Candice, was removed from the home by authorities and hospitalized as a precaution.

The Crocker home had previously come to the attention of the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services, though the agency has refused comment and the sheriff’s department was unaware of any cases. Effingham County Sheriff’s Office stated their only interactions with the household involved complaints about their pit bulls. While both children had been enrolled in Effingham County schools, they were withdrawn for home-schooling before they went missing.

Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie said neighbors only approached the investigators with their concerns something was “wrong” in the home when they were already on the scene and digging, and implored those with similar concerns to come forward sooner. “If we can just encourage those folks to give us a call, it could lead us to maybe not having this conclusion,” he said.  The family reportedly kept to themselves, though neighbors recall seeing Mary working in the yard frequently and classmates say her hands were “red” from overwork.

Netflix is top dog in the streaming business, but there are a bunch of contenders nipping at its heels and eager to take its place. Disney has Disney Play coming next year (with a cheaper subscription price to start), Amazon Prime Video is going to be making a major push for new subscribers with its Lord of the Rings TV show, and one of these days Apple is eventually going to debut all those shows they’ve been stockpiling.

Oh yeah, and don’t forget about HBO, which was and still is often considered the gold standard in the premium long-form storytelling arena. HBO was recently acquired by AT&T, and at a communication conference this morning, AT&T’s CEO had some strong words for Netflix, referring to them as the Walmart of streaming services. That’s a big diss, but to quote one of HBO’s most famous shows, “you come at the king, you best not miss.”

Speaking at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference this morning, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson took a moment to praise his new acquisition while slamming the competition. I’ll get to his Walmart comparison in a minute, but first, let’s try to parse this separate piece of news from Variety:

“[Stephenson] said AT&T is looking to launch a new direct-to-consumer model for WarnerMedia (the former Time Warner), built around the Warner Bros. content library and including content from HBO and Turner Sports. The company plans to reveal more details of the new direct-to-consumer streaming plans in the fourth quarter of 2018.”

Wait a second…is he talking about another streaming service? One that plays Warner Bros. movies and includes original content from HBO? That already exists! It’s called HBO Now. Is the Turner Sports connection really enough to necessitate an entirely new service? The number of streaming services that already exist is overwhelming enough, so can we pump the brakes on announcing ones that seem to make absolutely no sense?

Here’s what Stephenson had to say about HBO, including his dig at Netflix:

“HBO is a very very unique asset. I think of Netflix kind of as the Walmart of [subscription video-on-demand services]. HBO is kind of the Tiffany.”

This is hilarious for a number of reasons. First, Walmart is actually planning to launch its own streaming service (which will presumably feature nothing but old Jeff Foxworthy stand-up specials, but still). Second, as many have already pointed out, Walmart reports $ 486 billion in revenue last year compared to Tiffany & Co.’s $ 4.2 billion. And third, Stephenson’s comment seems like the pained remark of a jilted lover. While HBO’s Game of Thrones earned the most Emmy nominations of any single show this year, Netflix finally snapped HBO’s 17-year streak of being the network that earned the most nominations. (Netflix ended up with 112, while HBO finished with 108.)

Stephenson’s comparison is trying to paint HBO as a purveyor of high-quality entertainment while Netflix appeals to the lowly commoners. And yes, while Netflix certainly produces a ton of crap, they also have plenty of gems. HBO has its fair share of great original content, but nothing you can say will ever convince me that Ballers should be compared to a diamond.

We’re at a really interesting place in the streaming wars, and the entire landscape could look massively different in just a few short years. I wonder if Stephenson will ever look back on his words and regret them, or if AT&T will somehow be the one to knock Netflix from atop its perch.
