Waller, who won the Hollindale in 2010 (Metal Bender) and 2011 (My Kingdom Of Fife), has five runners in the race on Saturday, headed by early favourite Comin’ Through and cult hero Tom Melbourne.

Waller feels the changes in the programming of the Sydney autumn present RQ with a chance to capitalise.

“It’s probably a race if Queensland continues to boost, they will get it up to Group 1 at some stage, because there’s certainly been no shortage of good horses win it,” Waller said.

“If you put another $ 150,000 on top you’d have a Group 1 race in no time.

“It’s a race Queensland should be targeting as a follow on from the Doncaster and the Queen Elizabeth. Even the Queen of the Turf, enticing the milers out to 1800m.”

Waller said the huge boost to the prizemoney of Sydney’s Queen Elizabeth Stakes should be seen as an opportunity rather than a negative for the Queensland carnival.

“The Queen Elizabeth (trainers) are strategically planning to have their horses running at their third or fourth run,” he said. “That leaves a bit left in the tank, whereas it used to be a $ 500,000 race and it was their fifth and sixth runs and they were pretty tired by the time they got to it.”

Waller has a powerful hand in the $ 358,000 Hollindale and rates Comin’ Through as the best of his five runners, slightly in front of Tom Melbourne.

“Comin’ Through was very good in the Doncaster where he raced three wide and he backed it up with a good run seven days later behind arguably the four best weight-for-age horses in the country in Gailo Chop, Happy Clapper, Humidor and Winx,” he said. “There’s no better form.

“I think three weeks between runs, coming back to 1800m is just the perfect race for him.

“Tom Melbourne was very unlucky from his wide gate in the Doncaster and he got run off his feet in track record time in the All Aged Stakes.

“I wouldn’t be too concerned about that. I look back to his Doncaster form and 1800m from a soft draw with Corey Brown aboard he will be a close second.”

Waller has also given a strong push for two-year-old Lean Mean Machine in the Ken Russell Memorial.

“He’s a really good horse and the perfect horse for Queensland,” Waller said. “I wouldn’t have a problem sitting three wide just behind the speed. He’s better than average, so it will take a good one to beat him.”

WALLER’S OTHER HOLLINDALE RUNNERS …

EGG TART: “She has gone missing a little bit, but finally stepping up to a more suitable distance is what she’s calling out for. She’s got a soft draw, which has been against her in a lot of her runs. She’s got the quality to return to Group 1 form and we’re just hoping to see that on Saturday because she’s clearly a Group 1 horse.”

SATONO RASEN: “Stepping up 400m he will be a big improver and you always respect Japanese form. Again, run off his feet in track record time in the All Aged Stakes.”

ONE FOOT IN HEAVEN: “If it was a soft track, he would come right into contention, but I do think he would need that to show his best. He didn’t go too bad first up, but he did blow out and I would love to see him over 2000m in the Doomben Cup on a soft track.”

Asked whether there was enough time for Winx to run in the Queen Elizabeth and then travel to England for Royal Ascot, Waller said: “I’m not sure.”

Waller said Winx is almost certain to run in the Apollo Stakes (1400m) first-up at Royal Randwick on February 17 before most likely contesting the Chipping Norton Stakes and George Ryder.

Asked whether the discussion had been had on whether 2018 would be Winx’s final year racing, Waller said it had not.

Mallyon moves north

GROUP 1-winning jockey Katelyn Mallyon has moved to Sydney to “test the waters” and be closer to her partner James McDonald.

Mallyon moved to Sydney last weekend and had five rides at Canberra on Friday.

“Obviously my partner James McDonald is based in Sydney,” she said. “It was inevitable I was going to come up here at some stage and I thought I would come up here and give it a crack at riding and see how it goes.

“I’m at Randwick and riding work for John O’Shea and Gai Waterhouse and I’m just feeling my way and obviously it’s a change and I’ve never really left Melbourne before.

“I’m excited to see what I can do here and I would like to have good success in Sydney.”

QUEENSLAND apprentices Baylee Nothdurft and Nick Keal were slapped with significant bans after a bizarre incident in race five at Toowoomba on Friday night.

Nothdurft was suspended for four weeks after being found guilty of raising his elbow and making contact with Keal near the 1000m mark of the race. Keal was then hit with a three-week ban for altering his whip action near the 300m in an endeavour to strike either Nothdurft or the rival rider’s mount.

His big-betting career spanned over 80 years.” Nerrida Clancy, 73, was honorary secretary of Leeton Jockey Club for more than 20 years. RIP.

The trainer has also since won Doncasters with Rangirangdoo (2010), Sacred Falls (2013-14), Kermadec (2015) and Winx (2016).

Sydney’s premier trainer also prepared the winners of three Epsom Handicaps, three George Main Stakes and two Chipping Norton Stakes in the last decade.

Waller snared a Villiers in 2008 with Honor In War, who scored on protest over champion sprinter Takeover Target, but the race was run over 1400m due to the equine influenza outbreak.

Mister Sea Wolf had 23 starts in England and Ireland before being sent Down Under during spring to join the Waller stable.

At his Australian debut, he was just edged out by Testashadow in the Festival Stakes at Rosehill Gardens two weeks ago.

“He was at Werribee when he first came into quarantine and had a good grounding there,’’ said Waller’s stable representative Charlie Duckworth.

“Then he came to us in Sydney and went enormous first up in the Festival Stakes.

“It was exciting for us to see Mister Sea Wolf run so well because of most of our European horses, in their first preparations here, show us a fraction of what we get from them in later preparations.’’

Duckworth pointed out that Mister Sea Wolf has had more race experience than the majority of imported gallopers that join the Waller stable and this is reflected in his race manners. “A lot of the European horses want to overdo things when they first race here because of the slower tempo mid-race in Australia but not this horse, he is just a professional,” Duckworth said.

“He has trained on really well and Kerrin (McEvoy) galloped him on Tuesday morning and gave a glowing report. He is a tough horse who wants to try for you.’’

Sydney’s hot spell this week is likely to ensure a very firm Randwick track surface tomorrow but Duckworth dispelled any concerns that Mister Sea Wolf may not be suited.

“Mister Sea Wolf’s form is superior on the softer surfaces but I don’t think it will impact him too much,’’ Duckworth said.

“We are confident he is in good shape but obviously Interlocuter is a very smart horse and they are trying to get him to the Doncaster.’’

Interlocuter is an easing $ 3.30 favourite for the Villiers with Mister Sea Wolf pressing at $ 5.50.

Waller, who was at the Hong Kong International meeting last Sunday, is due back in Sydney, where his stable is well-represented with 13 entries in seven races including Vassal in the Listed Christmas Cup (2400m).

Vassal was a Rosehill 2400m winner two starts back and drops 6kg to the 53kg limit for Saturday’s staying feature.

“The big weight drop is the key for Vassal,’’ Duckworth said.

“He galloped nicely on Tuesday and is certainly a chance.’’

The Waller stable is producing two of its emerging gallopers at the Randwick meeting with Calculated in the opener, the Bloodstock News Handicap (1100m) and Chatelard resuming in the Right2Drive Handicap (1600m).

“Calculated is going to find 1100m short of his best,’’ Duckworth admitted. “But we need him to learn to switch off and do things properly in his races.

“We could try to get him to a 1400m race first-up and be very confident he would go out and win but because he does things wrong, we want to see him over a trip where he can switch off and find his rhythm.

“He has a big weight of 60.5kg but he has a lot of ability and if he wins this race, then we will be excited about him going forward.’’

Chatelard has five of his stablemates in opposition when he resumes tomorrow, although Duckworth said High Mist will be withdrawn.

“I like Chatelard as a horse, he has a massive will to win, which is a great attribute,’’ Duckworth said.

“He’s drawn to get a soft run and I think he is more than capable of winning first-up.’’

Chatelard chased home Zourkhan in a recent Warwick Farm barrier trial and the pair clash again tomorrow.

“Zourkhan was brilliant in that trial,’’ Duckworth said.

“I remember straight after the trial that Tye (Angland) rang for the ride.

“We had Tye booked for the race but not particularly on Zourkhan.

“But then he said was there any way he could ride Zourkhan and we put him on.

“You want your jockeys going out there thinking they can win so we are happy to have Tye on the horse.’’

Among the Waller stable’s other Randwick entries is Japonisme in the Listed $ 125,000 Razor Sharp Handicap (1200m).

Japonisme hasn’t won a race since April last year and Duckworth admitted that the stable is in two minds about whether to start him on Saturday or reserve him for a 1400m race next week.
