The iconic actress was speaking on The Graham Norton Show – due to air tonight – about her new film All Is True when she recalled making an error during a performance of The Merchant Of Venice. The star singled out the play as her least favourite by the Bard, and it seems she has a bad memory to go along with it.

“I have never been fond of it,” she said. “Everyone in it behaves very badly.

“Against my will I did once play Portia the first year I was married and Mike [late husband Michael Williams] played Bassanio and I had a speech to him and I made a terrible, terrible mistake.

“Instead of saying, ‘I speak too long; but ’tis to peize the time, to eke it and to draw it out in length, to stay you from election’; I said ‘Erection’.

“The wind band that was about to play put down their instruments and walked off the stage in shock.

“It caused a lot of unrest!”

Discussing her new movie with Sir Kenneth Branagh, Dench said she needed next-to-no persuading to take the job.

“All the films I have done with Ken is the same story,” she explained.

“He just says, ‘I wonder if you would be interested…’ and I say ‘Yes’, and for this one I got a call from my agent to say Ken wanted to come down and talk to me about something, and I said, ‘Tell him not to come, I’ll do it.’”

Branagh interjected: “It is absolutely true. She said, ‘Don’t waste the petrol.’”

All Is True also stars Sir Ian McKellen, and tells the story of Shakespeare returning to his home in Stratford after the Globe Theatre burns down in 1613.

Branagh also directs, from a screenplay by Ben Elton.

All Is True is out on February 8. The Graham Norton Show airs tonight on BBC One.

Meet the man who walked 12,000 kilometers across the African continent https://briefnews.eu/meet-the-man-who-walked-12000-kilometers-across-the-african-continent/ https://briefnews.eu/meet-the-man-who-walked-12000-kilometers-across-the-african-continent/#respond Fri, 01 Jun 2018 15:17:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/meet-the-man-who-walked-12000-kilometers-across-the-african-continent/

In November 2015, Mario set off on his second proper walk, which was to be a casual stroll across the entire African continent, an expedition he named Crossing Africa. That’s 12,000 kilometers (7,456 miles) that would take him through South Africa, Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt.

RELATED: Is walking the most adventurous way to travel?

He returned home in January 2018—two years, three months, and presumably several hundred blisters later—successful, inspired and empowered by his feat (and feet). So we gave him a call. Because we like people who do this kind of thing.

Adventure.com: When most of us think about ‘exploring the world’, we’re talking about going on holiday for a couple of weeks. To say to your friends, “I’m just gonna go and walk across Africa for a couple of years,”—there must have been some good reactions.

Mario: Most people thought it was impossible or I was going to die. People were ready to write my obituary, which was pretty funny. But I wasn’t going out there to die, I was going out there to meet and overcome some challenges. Anything is possible with a little research.

Where did the idea for the Crossing Africa expedition come from?

I kind of stumbled upon it. It’s a combination of my interests—culture, travel, athletics, and pushing my body and mind to the limit. It took me about a year to figure out what I really wanted to do, and it’s not like anyone has written a manual on how to walk across Africa.

A man dressed to impersonate North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un walked through Pyongyang’s cheer squad at the Olympics — and they looked unimpressed to say the least.

Though it’s unclear if this is the same impersonator who crashed the games’ opening ceremony, the man was rushed away from the squad, much as the earlier impersonators were shoed away on Friday.

It’s 7:00am, and I’m driving down to Hull city centre to pick up Brett Johnson, known in cyberspace by the alias Gollumfun and dubbed the “Original Internet Godfather” by the US Secret Service.

Johnson was on the notorious US Most Wanted list in 2006 before being arrested for cyber crime and laundering US$ 4m. I’ve never met anyone whose name has been on that list, and so our encounter comes with some level of subliminal intimidation. Turns out, he’s both casual and friendly, and I’m keeping an open mind.

Princess Diana, 7 Days: Prince William reveals mother ‘walked beside him’ at funeral https://briefnews.eu/princess-diana-7-days-prince-william-reveals-mother-walked-beside-him-at-funeral/ https://briefnews.eu/princess-diana-7-days-prince-william-reveals-mother-walked-beside-him-at-funeral/#respond Sat, 26 Aug 2017 23:51:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/princess-diana-7-days-prince-william-reveals-mother-walked-beside-him-at-funeral/

The moving documentary will cover how in August 1997, the tragic death of the Princess of Wales stunned her family and catapulted the British public into one of the most extraordinary weeks in modern history.

In a brand new interview, William revealed how his mother’s funeral was a tough duty he had to complete, but that he felt Diana was there with him and walking beside them to help them get through the day.

He said: “Both our parents had brought us up to understand that as best we can that there is this element of duty and the responsibility that you have to do things that you don’t want to do.

“But I have to say, when it becomes that personal as walking behind your mother’s funeral cortège, it goes to another level of duty.

“But I just kept thinking about what she would want and that she’d be proud of Harry and I being able to go through it and effectively she was there with us.”

He added: “I felt like she was almost walking along beside us to get us through.”

Prince Harry also told of how he feels a need to “fill the holes” left following Diana’s passing.

He said: “All I want to do is try and fill the holes that my mother has left and between myself and William and everybody else that’s in those privileged positions to try and make a difference.

“That’s what it’s about for us, trying to make a difference.”

The programme will also hear from some of those most affected including her siblings Earl Spencer and Lady Sarah McCorquodale, former Prime Minister Tony Blair and members of the Royal household.

, 7 Days airs tonight on at 7.30pm.

Intel and Under Armour are getting a brand boost after their executives walked out of Trump’s manufacturing council https://briefnews.eu/intel-and-under-armour-are-getting-a-brand-boost-after-their-executives-walked-out-of-trumps-manufacturing-council/ https://briefnews.eu/intel-and-under-armour-are-getting-a-brand-boost-after-their-executives-walked-out-of-trumps-manufacturing-council/#respond Tue, 15 Aug 2017 20:53:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/intel-and-under-armour-are-getting-a-brand-boost-after-their-executives-walked-out-of-trumps-manufacturing-council/ Under ArmourUnder Armour

  • The president’s manufacturing council of business leaders lost three of its members Monday, and a fourth on Tuesday.
  • The companies, particularly Under Armour and Intel, are being lauded and actually getting a brand boost on social media.
  • According to data crunched by Brandwatch, 88.6% of the conversation around Intel and 89.4% of the conversation around Under Armour is positive.

More brands are coming forward and distancing themselves from President Trump.

The president’s manufacturing council of business leaders lost three of its members Monday, and a fourth on Tuesday, amid backlash from his failure to strongly condemn the deadly white-supremacist protests in Charlottesville, Virginia, this past weekend.

The president offered a stronger condemnation on Monday, but it was too little too late.

“For the vast majority of Americans there is a fine boundary between backlash from political correctness and overt hatred,” said Paul Marcum, president at integrated marketing agency Truffle Pig. “Charlottesville — and the president’s response to it — missed that distinction and ended up on the wrong side of that boundary.”

The four executives staging a walkout was them being unwilling to give extreme positions cover, said Marcum.

This is in stark contrast to positions that many of them held until very recently. Until now, many of these business leaders have rationalized joining Trump’s business councils by saying that they were trying help the president make better decisions about American business, even ignoring backlash.

Under Armour’s Plank, for example, was all praise for Trump in an interview with CNBC’s “Fast Money Halftime Report” back in February, despite the brand being threatened with “mass burnings” of the company’s garments across America.

“He wants to build things. He wants to make bold decisions and be really decisive,” Plank had said. “I’m a big fan of people that operate in the world of ‘publish and iterate’ versus ‘think, think, think, think, think,’ so there’s a lot that I respect there.”

But now, brands seem to be realizing that their advice is largely inconsequential. And that walking out in such a situation is not only the right thing to do, but perhaps just good business.

The companies in question, according to data crunched by social analytics company Brandwatch, are actually getting a boost in brand perception after their walkouts.

Since August 13, Merck has been mentioned more than 344,000 times online, because of departure of its CEO from Trump’s American Manufacturing Council. Intel and Under Armour have too been mentioned over 116,000 times and 130,000 times respectively, within the same time period.

Further, the sentiment around the brands is largely positive, with 88.6% of Intel’s and 89.4% of Under Armour’s conversation being positive.

The only brand with a negative sentiment attached to it is Merck (with 62.9% of its mentions being negative). This is being driven by Trump’s criticism on Twitter of Kenneth Frazier and how Merck provides “ripoff drugs.” The only reason it is negative is because people are criticizing Trump for singling out Merck and Frazier and not the other CEOs, and the algorithm can’t decipher that context, according to Brandwatch.

uaBrandwatch

On the other hand, President Trump’s brand seems to have taken a hit. According to Brandwatch, the most used hashtag in the combined conversations around all three companies is #ImpeachTrump. The hashtag has garnered over 33 million impressions.

Still, the brands seem to realize that it is ultimately a fragmented and polarizing issue. So even while leaving, it appears that Intel and Under Armour were trying to avoid backlash as much as possible.

“It certainly appears to be a strategic maneuver from Plank and Krzanich to announce their departure later in the evening when people are looking to relax and stray away from news updates,” said Brandwatch’s PR data manager, Kellan Terry. “I’d guess that they hoped their departures wouldn’t garner as much attention later at night, and it’s commonly witnessed on social media that backlash is greatest for the first deviation away from the expected.”

Being Mary Jane Premiere Recap: Who Came Clean? And Who Walked Out? https://briefnews.eu/being-mary-jane-premiere-recap-who-came-clean-and-who-walked-out/ https://briefnews.eu/being-mary-jane-premiere-recap-who-came-clean-and-who-walked-out/#respond Wed, 19 Jul 2017 03:48:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/being-mary-jane-premiere-recap-who-came-clean-and-who-walked-out/

Several months may have passed since we last saw Mary Jane Paul, but you’ll pleased — or horrified, depending on your position — to learn that very little about her has changed. Aside from her hair.

Tuesday’s Being Mary Jane premiere, which could have been titled “How to Lose Two Guys in Under an Hour,” began with the queen of self-sabotage coming clean to Lee about her newsroom romp with Justin — news which (surprise!) he did not take well.

“You’re obviously still that broken girl I met on the first night,” Lee told MJ as he stormed out of her exquisite apartment. “It was my mistake trying to put you back together.” But just when I was ready swear my allegiance to #TeamLee, he took things one step too far, telling Mary Jane, “Maybe it’s a good thing we didn’t have kids together. You’d be a terrible mom.” (Not cool, dude. Not cool.)

Little did Mary Jane know, the universe was about to dump a heap of salt into her gaping emotional wound. Upon learning about MJ broke up with Lee in order to be with him, Justin responded with quite possibly the worst thing any man has ever said to a woman:

Look, we had sex. Once. And we both agreed that it was a mistake. This isn’t love. I have a girlfriend, and I’m not going to ruin the relationship for … I’m not going to blow up my world on a whim, OK? And you shouldn’t want me to.

–
Honestly, I’m surprised MJ only took her wrath out on her bedroom pillows; I was expecting her to go fully Godzilla on Manhattan. And even though Justin eventually changed his tune, showing up at Mary Jane’s place for a little boom boom, I think we all know this won’t end well.

Elsewhere in the premiere…

* Ronda made a controversial return to Great Day USA, during which she proceeded to dress Mary Jane down in the middle of the newsroom — as if Great Day‘s dismal ratings weren’t stressing her out enough.

* Kara’s arbitration hearing went less successfully than she hoped; apparently the image Kara’s been putting out — thanks to Orlando wanting her to hang out with the wives and girlfriends of his teammates — makes it seem as though she doesn’t need the money.

* And forgetting for a moment how insane it was for Mary Jane’s mom to call Lee and find out why he dumped her, I was genuinely surprised to hear that Mama and Papa Patterson are harboring (more) dark family secrets.
