‘HELL OF A HONEYMOON’ | As we began the hour, in part a continuation of action that kicked off on Station 19, Owen hollered at Jackson for pulling his residents from the ER to help with COVID testing, Teddy backseat-drove Mer’s treatment via Zoom on one of her last days off, Jo continued to bond with Luna, and Amelia marveled at the kids’ ability to create more laundry than existed… just as Link’s parents showed up in the driveway in their RV. They had a bright idea, too: taking the youngsters on a COVID-safe road trip, thereby giving Link and Amelia a break. At Grey Sloan’s testing site, Jackson shared with Levi that he’d sat through endless Catherine Fox Foundation meetings to get the hospital extra tests. In peds, Cormac and Reza treated a baby named Arthur who was waiting with anxious dad Chris for a heart transplant. Finally, Station 19 newlyweds Shane and Carissa were brought to the ambulance bay by our firefighters. He was still pissed that she’d begged the first responders to save her first, and to hell with the guy she’d married only earlier that day.
‘DON’T TELL HER HOW I AM, SHE DOESN’T GET TO KNOW ANYTHING’ | While treating Carissa, the bride beseeched Jo to put her in the same room as Shane. When she admitted to Tom what she’d said to Shane in a moment of panic, Koracick cracked that maybe she could blame it on brain bleed. When Jo filled in Shane on Carissa’s condition, he instructed her not to tell his wife that he was being wheeled into surgery — or anything. Natch, Carissa realized at once that Shane was still mad. “I was wrong that no one would miss him,” she cried. “It’s only been a few hours, and I already miss him so much, I could burst.” Shortly, Jo filled in a still-unconscious Mer as a way of backing into admitting that she wanted to change specialties. “Since Alex left, my house hasn’t been my happiest place,” Jo said, “so I want work to be.” Oh, and she’d repeat it all when Grey woke up. “I can’t take any more worst days here.” Following Shane’s surgery, he seemed ready to stick a fork in his brand-new marriage — until Bailey gave him what-for. At last, he asked to see his bride, at least via tablet. Only when they were face to face, he told Carissa that he wanted an annulment. She’d been selfish when he met her and was selfish now, he just no longer found it charming.
‘LET’S HAVE SEX IN THE KITCHEN!’ | Left alone at home without the kids, Link and Amelia started down the path to sexytime when she broke down crying. In response, off a remark from his mom about Amelia being his wife, Link got down on bended knee. But that wasn’t what she wanted at all, she just needed a good cry. “It just hit me,” she later said, “that it’s been months since I was able to feel whatever I want without worrying that I’m going to scar a child.” But, um, did she want to marry him? Did he want to marry her? He’d sworn he’d never put a kid through what he went through with his folks’ divorce. And she feared that she was wired for self-destruction; lately, she’d gone to sleep dreaming of getting high. She even thought about it when she was feeding Scout. Later, she shared that she couldn’t so much as smoke weed because if she did, she might forget that she couldn’t do heroin. So “for the record, I would marry you in a hot minute,” Link said. She was stronger than most addicts. With that, he got down on one knee again, and she hollered, “No!” again. Later still, Amelia admitted that she loved Link so much, it was all she could do not to have a panic attack. In exchange for her not getting high, he promised to no longer propose to her in a remotely compulsory manner. With that, they took advantage of the empty house and the roaring fire… just as his parents returned with the kids.

‘YOU WANT TO CUT OUT A PART OF HIS HEART?!?’ | When Cormac found Chris in a state, the doc invited him to go outside or to the chapel… “So I can pray for someone else’s kid to die?” Chris asked. He then admitted that Arthur’s mom Holly had been struggling desperately since the pandemic hit. Maybe it was postpartum or the state of the world… but it was bad. “We can’t lose” the baby, Chris sobbed to Hayes. Hoping to save the tot, Cormac attempted to recruit Maggie. “Aren’t you supposed to be a genius or something?” he asked when she suggested throwing in the towel. “It’s not giving up,” she replied, “it’s letting [the parents] go on.” Luckily, a conversation with Jo about forgiving her mother gave Cormac an idea about how to treat Arthur. Chris was skeptical: cut out a part of Arthur’s heart to put in a pump? He had to call Holly. Before the procedure, the new dad tearfully told his baby that he’d already given his parents a lifetime of joy. Miraculously, Maggie and Cormac pulled it off! “He’s OK,” Chris told Holly. “And bionic!”
‘HOTELS ARE KICKING PEOPLE OUT TO MAKE ROOM FOR YOUR NEW ARRIVALS’ | Trying to do some good, Jackson began letting Levi book hotel rooms for patients who tested positive for COVID and had nowhere to safely quarantine. But his good deed backfired, it seemed. A community-outreach program was being stymied by his efforts — their homeless beneficiaries were being thrown out to make room for Richie Rich’s. Ah, he hadn’t realized that that would happen, he told Mama Ortiz when she called him out. Great, she fired back. “We’ll just tell everyone it wasn’t on purpose. That should keep ’em real warm tonight.” Though he remedied the situation, Alma would cut him no slack. Temporary fixes weren’t real fixes. What’s more, “all of this is too much,” she cried. Later, Jackson paged Alma, who quickly apologized for speaking up for underserved communities. But he felt the same way — and wanted to hear her ideas, based on her past stint as a social worker. She had good ideas, he had deep pockets — they could make a hell of a team.
‘HELLO, SLEEPYHEAD’ | As the episode neared its conclusion, Mer woke up and immediately apologized to Richard for having had to put her on a vent. However, “I’m glad I chose you,” she added. Oh, and “we need to talk about Wilson.” Guess Mer heard what Jo’d said earlier about changing specialties! As Jo was leaving the hospital at the end of the day, Richard approached her offering his support. But he had to know what was going on. Back at Mer’s, Link suggested that he and Amelia check in every few weeks to make sure that they were comfortable with their decision not to tie the knot. “Are we super broken or super evolved?” she asked. Definitely the latter, he said. At Owen’s, he apologized to Teddy for his reaction to her confession about Allison. He also admitted that he should’ve known she was going through something to do what she had to him with Tom. He wasn’t sure if he could be more to her now than a friend, but at very least, he wanted to be that. Credit where it’s due: That’s progress, Owen. In our last shot, Bailey, Richard and Maggie marveled at how amazing Mer was. Even when she was sleeping, she was apparently listening.
So, what did you think of “Sorry Doesn’t Always Make It Right”? Weigh in in the comments below.

Canadian Paralympians set a new national single-Games record of 24 medals on the strength of a five-medal day which included a pair of cross-country golds and a curling bronze. The previous record of 19 was set at Vancouver 2010.
Here’s a quick recap of all the important Paralympic news you might have missed overnight from Pyeongchang, South Korea, and what’s to come later today.
Brian McKeever was on to something when he said Canada has “superpower” potential in cross-country. The 38-year-old from Canmore, Alta., won gold in the men’s 10-kilometre visually impaired event to complete a rare “triple treble” — sweeping all three individual men’s cross-country events for the third consecutive Winter Paralympics.
McKeever’s victory with guide Graham Nishikawa established a new national Paralympic medal record for Canada, but he wasn’t the only Canadian to claim cross-country gold on Day 8 of the Games.
Natalie Wilkie, the youngest member of Canada’s Paralympic contingent, took top spot in the women’s 7.5 km standing event to earn her first-career gold. The 17-year-old from Salmon Arm, B.C., won her first medal earlier in the week with a bronze performance in the sprint event.
Mark Arendz earned his fifth medal in as many events with a bronze in the men’s 10 km standing race, while Emily Young captured bronze in the women’s standing event for her first-career Paralympic medal.
The Canadian wheelchair curling rink successfully regrouped to win bronze against host South Korea following a contentious semifinal loss to eventual champion China. But it was the scene after the game — teary-eyed team members celebrating with an ecstatic group of family and friends — that may be the most memorable part.
“We’re just all a family,” lead Marie Wright said. “Our families became a family and on the ice we were just like a family. It’s going to be hard to go back home.”
Canadian para alpine skier Mac Marcoux had a strong second run in the men’s slalom visually impaired event, but finished in fourth place in a competitive field.
Marcoux and guide Jack Leitch won downhill gold and giant slalom bronze earlier at these Games.
Canadian athletes have several medal opportunities on the final day of competition.
Mollie Jepsen and Alana Ramsay look to add to their medal hauls in the women’s slalom. All classes begin competing with the first run at 8:30 p.m. ET, followed by the second at 11:30 p.m. ET.
Canada is fielding two star-studded relay teams to close out the para nordic events in Pyeongchang. Natalie Wilkie, Emily Young, Chris Klebl and Mark Arendz will compete in the 4×2.5 km mixed relay at 9 p.m. ET, while Collin Cameron and Brian McKeever will ski in the 4×2.5 km open relay at 10 p.m. ET.
Canada and the United States compete for para ice hockey gold at 11 p.m. ET. The Canadians are looking to win their first Paralympic title since 2006, while the Americans can earn their third-consecutive crown with a win.
Canada’s para ice hockey team secured a spot in a Paralympic gold-medal game for the first time in 12 years, while the Canadian curling rink booked a date with China in Friday’s semifinals.
Here’s a quick recap of all the important Paralympic news you might have missed overnight and what’s to come later today.
The Canadians are back in a Paralympic ice hockey final for the first time in 12 years following a 7-0 win over South Korea. Only three members of Canada’s current roster were on the team that won gold at the 2006 Games in Torino, and they’re excited to get another shot at winning it all.
Canada will face the expected gold-medal clash against the U.S., thumped Italy 10-1 in its semifinal match. The Americans are also two-time defending Paralympic champions. The nations are set to play in the gold-medal game on Saturday at 11 p.m. ET.
The quest for a wheelchair curling four-peat at the Paralympics continues for Canada, with the rink set to face China in the semifinals on Friday at 2:35 a.m. ET. In the team’s round-robin game earlier in Pyeongchang, the Canadians rallied from a 5-1 deficit to beat China 8-5.
Canada, true to form, rallied in their final round-robin game to finish with a 9-2 record. Top-seed South Korea will play Norway in the other semifinal matchup.
In addition to Canada’s semifinal curling draw early Friday morning, here’s a look at today’s events featuring Canadian competitors.
Mark Arendz has one more shot at winning an elusive biathlon gold in Pyeongchang. Arendz — who owns biathlon silver and bronze as well as cross-country bronze from these Games — competes in the men’s 15-kilometre event tonight. The women’s 12.5 km also takes place this evening.
The sitting events (featuring Canadian bronze medallist Collin Cameron) get underway at 9:00 p.m. ET, followed by the standing and visual impairment events at 11:00 p.m. ET.
Canada’s snowboarders are back on the hill for the Paralympic debut of banked slalom. The men’s and women’s events begin at 9:30 p.m. ET and you can learn about the new event here.
The seven Canadian competitors were shut out of the snowboard cross podium earlier at the Games; Michelle Salt was the top Canadian, finishing fourth in the women’s LL1 event.
Canada had a dominant day at the Winter Paralympics, claiming another six medals — headlined by Brian McKeever’s 12th career gold — to bring the country’s total to 16 in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Meanwhile on the curling sheets, the Canadian rink keeps finding ways to rally.
Here’s a quick recap of all the important Paralympic news you might have missed overnight and what’s to come later today.
Brian McKeever thinks Canada is well on its way to that elite level. The 15-time Paralympic medallist has reason to be optimistic; in addition to his gold in the men’s 1.5-kilometre visually impaired sprint, Canadians Mark Arendz and Natalie Wilkie earned their first-ever cross-country medals, with both taking home bronze.
Arendz was involved in a “nerve-racking” photo finish that saw the biathlon star tie for third with Finland’s Ilkka Tuomisto and both receive medals.
It’s not just Canada’s cross-country skiers who are raking in medals. A trio of Canadian alpine skiers — Mollie Jepsen, Mac Marcoux and Alexis Guimond — won giant slaom bronze in their respective disciplines.
The bronze was Guimond’s first-career Paralympic podium, while Jepsen added to her super combined gold and super-G bronze from earlier at these Games; Marcoux and guide Jack Leitch earned downhill gold on the first day of competition, but Marcoux crashed out in his next two events.
Mark Ideson’s rink rallied for another comeback win — this time against the Neutral Paralympic Athletes — and then held on to beat Slovakia 9-5 in the second match to clinch a playoff spot.
It’s been a total team effort on the ice so far from Ideson, Ina Forrest, Dennis Thiessen, Marie Wright and alternate James Anseeuw. Canada takes on Germany this evening at 8:35 p.m. ET and Finland on Thursday at 1:35 a.m. ET.
Other than Canada’s remaining curling draws, para ice hockey is the main event today.
Canada takes on South Korea in the semifinals tonight at 11 p.m. ET. The Canadians committed to a demanding fitness-first system in order to capture the country’s first Paralympic gold since 2006, and the on-ice results so far — the team outscored its opponents 35-0 in group play — speak for themselves.
The United States continues its quest for a third-straight Paralympic title when it takes on Italy in the other semifinal on Thursday at 7 a.m. ET.
It was another banner day for Canadian Paralympians, who earned three medals — including Mollie Jepsen’s first-ever para alpine gold — at the Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. That brings the country’s total to 10 at these Paralympics so far.
Here’s a quick recap of all the important Paralympic news you might have missed overnight and what’s to come later today.
Jepsen and fellow Canadian Alana Ramsay entered the slalom half of the alpine super combined in second and third place, respectively, after the super-G portion. Ramsay nailed her run to guarantee a spot on the podium, and Jepsen followed with a blistering sub-minute performance to take home gold.
While Jepsen and Ramsay earned gold and bronze, respectively, Canada’s other alpine medallists from earlier at the Games didn’t fare as well.
Super-G sitting champ Kurt Oatway didn’t finish after landing outside the gate during the super-G run of the super combined, while downhill winner Mac Marcoux crashed in the super-G component of the visually impaired event.
Marcoux and guide Jack Leitch started the Games strong, but the 20-year-old from Sault Ste-Marie, Ont., hasn’t finished in his last two events.
Mark Arendz is quickly building an impressive biathlon resume, earning bronze in the 12.5-kilometre biathlon for his fourth-career Paralympic podium and second medal in Pyeongchang. But he won’t be satisfied until he captures Canada’s first-ever biathlon gold, and he’s willing to take risks to achieve that goal.
The 28-year-old from Hartsville, P.E.I., previously said he wants to be “one of the best” Paralympians. The fiercely determined competitor still has one more biathlon left, the 15 km event on Thursday at 11 p.m. ET.
The defending Paralympic wheelchair curling champions have regained their form following a pair of losses. Canada rallied from a 5-1 deficit against China to win 8-5 in its early game, and takes on the United States at 6:35 a.m. ET.
You can brush up on the rules of the sport here.
Here’s a look at today’s events featuring Canadian competitors.
The men’s and women’s giant slalom events get underway at 8:30 p.m. ET, giving Jepsen and Ramsay a chance to add to their medal hauls and offering Marcoux and Oatway opportunities to get back on track. The second run continues on Wednesday at 1 a.m. ET.
Eight-time para alpine champion Lauren Woolstencroft, who’s at the Games as part of CBC’s broadcast crew, thinks the timing of the Paralympics should be changed to improve exposure.
Already Canada’s most decorated Winter Paralympian, Brian McKeever continues his quest for a cross-country “triple-treble” when he competes in the sprint classic. All men’s and women’s classes begin qualifications at 9 p.m. ET, followed by the semifinals and finals at 11:30 p.m. ET.

The Canadian para ice hockey team notched another impressive win to book a spot in the semifinals and Brian McKeever skied his way to a historic gold, while the country’s snowboarders fell short in snowboard cross at the Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
Here’s a quick recap of all the important Paralympic news you might have missed overnight and what’s to come later today.
Canada locked up first place in Group A with an 8-0 win over Norway, bringing their preliminary-round goal total to 35. Billy Bridges and Rob Armstrong both netted a pair, while Brad Bowden, Greg Westlake, Tyler McGregor and Liam Hickey also scored.
Dominic Larocque extended the team’s shutout streak to three games while making his first Paralympic start in goal. The Afghanistan War veteran, who was a forward on Canada’s bronze-winning team in Sochi, made a relief appearance in the team’s opening game in Pyeongchang.
Canada now has some time off before the semifinals. The Canadians will play the second-place team from Group B on Wednesday at 11 p.m. ET.
It was a difficult day on the course for Canada’s seven para snowboarders, who were unable to medal in snowboard cross. Michelle Salt was the top Canadian, finishing fourth in the women’s LL1 event. Sandrine Hamel lost in her LL2 quarter-final.
On the men’s side, John Leslie (LL2) and Curt Minard (UL) both reached the quarters, but lost in their respective runs. Minard, who only started competing less than two years ago, bested fellow Canadian Andrew Genge in the 1/8 finals.
Alex Massie, who knew he was going to snowboard again despite a life-altering injury in 2011, was edged out in his 1/8 final. Fellow Canadian Colton Liddle, also competing in the LL2 event, was unsuccessful in his 1/8 final.
There’s still more snowboarding to come in Pyeongchang as banked slalom makes its Paralympic debut on March 15. You can learn about the new event here.
Canadian cross-country skier Brian McKeever is particularly fond of the quote “get busy living or get busy dying” from The Shawshank Redemption. The 38-year-old clearly chose the former on his way to making Canadian Paralympic history with a gold-medal win in the men’s 20-kilometre visually impaired freestyle.
With the win, the “relentless” McKeever became Canada’s most successful Winter Paralympian with 14 career medals — 11 of which are gold — to surpass para alpine great Lana Spreeman. McKeever, who has won three individual golds at each of the last two Winter Games, can still add to his medal haul in Pyeongchang.
Here’s a look at today’s events featuring Canadian competitors.
Canada’s rink looks to bounce back after its first loss of the Games when it squares off against Great Britain at 6:30 a.m. ET.
The Canadians also play China on Monday at 8:35 p.m. ET. You can brush up on the rules of the sport here.
A trio of Canadian medallists look to add to their medal haul in the women’s and men’s super combined events. Kurt Oatway enters with super-G gold in the sitting classification, while Mollie Jepsen (super-G bronze) and Alana Ramsay (downhill bronze) compete in the standing event.
Canadians Frederique Turgeon, Mel Pemble and Erin Latimer also ski in the women’s standing event while Kirk Schornstein and Braydon Luscombe compete in the men’s standing.
The super-G portion of the combined begins at 8:30 p.m. and continues Tuesday at 2 a.m. ET with the slalom run.
Canada’s Mark Arendz competes in the men’s 12.5 km standing biathlon, looking for more hardware after nabbing a silver in the 7.5 km event earlier at the Games.
Derek Zaplotinsky goes in the men’s sitting event while Brittany Hudak skis in the women’s 10 km standing biathlon. The sitting events get underway at 9 p.m. ET while the standing and visually impaired events start at 11:30 p.m. ET.

Skip Mark Ideson keyed a comeback for Canada’s wheelchair curling team and the Canadian para ice hockey team cruised to another blowout, while a pair of Calgarians added to the country’s medal haul at the Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
Here’s a quick recap of all the important Paralympic news you might have missed overnight and what’s to come later today.
Canada’s quest for Paralympic hockey supremacy continued with another offensive clinic, gliding to a 10-0 win over Italy.
Ben Delaney netted a hat trick, while teen titans Liam Hickey and James Dunn both scored twice. Tyler McGregor, Adam Dixon and Dom Cozzolino also scored for Canada.
The Canadians close out pool play against Norway on Monday at 2:30 a.m. ET.
After gliding through their first two games, the Canadians had to deal with some early pressure from Sweden. The rink found itself in a 4-0 hole after two ends, but Ideson remained calm in the third, scoring four to even the score and spark a rally,
Canada proceeded to play mistake-free for the rest of the match while Swedish skip Viljo Pettersson Dahl faltered with the hammer. Ideson stole singles in the fourth and fifth ends, adding two more in the eighth to bring the final score to 8-4.
Up next for the 3-0 Canadians is an 8:35 p.m. ET date with hosts South Korea.
Calgary para alpine skiers Kurt Oatway and Alana Ramsay continued Canada’s para alpine success on Day 2 of the Games. Oatway, 34, was golden in the men’s super-G sitting race in a time of one minute 25.83 seconds to earn his first Paralympic medal.
“It’s hard to explain how good I feel right now. [Saturday’s] downhill was a big disappointment for me,” said Oatway, who was eighth in the downhill. “Coming back and winning the Super G is the best feeling ever. I went from feeling super low to feeling super high. It’s amazing.”
Earlier in the women’s standing super-G, Ramsay also reached the podium for the first time with a bronze. The 23-year-old finished behind France’s Marie Bochet and Germany’s Andrea Rothfuss.
The pair of Canadian medals brought the country’s total to six through two days of competition; four of those medals have come in the para alpine discipline.
Canada’s para ice hockey team takes on Italy this morning, with both teams looking to improve to 2-0. Live coverage of the game can be found here.
Here’s a look at the other events featuring Canadian competitors:
Canadian flag-bearer Brian McKeever can claim sole possession of the title of Canada’s most decorated Winter Paralympian with a medal in the men’s 20-kilometre visually impaired event.
The 38-year-old is currently tied with para alpine skier Lana Spreeman with 13; McKeever owns 10 cross-country golds, two silvers and a biathlon bronze and will ski with guide Graham Nishikawa.
Canada’s Emily Young and Natalie Wilkie compete in the women’s 15 km standing event. Cross-country competition begins at 9 p.m. ET.
Men’s and women’s snowboard cross gets underway at 9:30 p.m. ET featuring several Canadians.
Michelle Salt and Sandrine Hamel compete in the women’s events, while John Leslie, Alex Massie, Andrew Genge, Curt Minard and Colton Liddle compete on the men’s side.
]]>If Chicago Fire is going on a month-long hiatus to make way for the Olympics, you better believe it’s going to (temporarily) sign off with an explosive cliffhanger. And that’s just what the NBC drama did during Thursday’s episode, which ended with Casey and Severide leaping off a building roof against a backdrop of flames.
It’s now been one year since the 2016 election, which, if you believe the steady drumbeat of news articles in the months that followed, served as a “wake-up call” for Silicon Valley that it was failing to connect with the rest of the country.
In that year, Silicon Valley hasn’t magically hired thousands of laid-off factory workers. But there have been signs that the tech industry recognizes that it can’t just keep hiring within Cupertino, Mountain View, or San Jose forever. How much of that has been driven by politics and how much by supply and demand is up for interpretation.
Tim Cook and Mark Zuckerberg have both spent time visiting with companies in the Heartland. Individuals like former Uber exec Brian McClendon have left Silicon Valley to return to work in their home states. And of course, there was the news that Amazon will create a second headquarters somewhere in North America, which if it brings the 50,000 high-level jobs it promises to, could create an entirely new tech locus.
The area where I think more progress needs to be made is in distribution of venture capital. Most of the entrepreneurs I’ve talked to outside of Silicon Valley this year say that the VCs they meet with are still hesitant to invest in an entrepreneur who’s not a 10-minute drive away. Venture capitalists, not philanthropists, have the power to fund the startups to really grow cities outside of the coasts into business hubs — not just photo ops.

If it seems like rural Americans face an uphill fight, it’s because they do. Research shows that job growth in rural areas significantly lags job growth in urban areas and still has not returned to 2008 pre-financial crisis levels. Prime-age (25-54) workers in rural areas are also poorer than their urban counterparts, and a disproportionately high […]

ANALYSIS: Last month, Ann Arbor-based startup Duo Security announced that it had raised a new $ 70 million round, valuing the company at $ 1.17 billion. That made Duo Security — which creates a two-factor authentication app for enterprise companies — the first unicorn company in Ann Arbor, and its $ 70 million series D the largest round of […]

When we think of tech hubs, images of San Francisco or New York may come to mind — but these coastal cities aren’t the only ones with thriving tech communities. Heartland cities like Kansas City, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, and Detroit rank among the fastest growing cities for tech jobs. In March, CompTIA published its annual Cyberstates […]

Boundless recently moved its headquarters from New York to St. Louis, and we couldn’t be more excited. Some of the reasons for moving our five-year-old company are unique to our business, but others reflect St. Louis’ surprising uptick in entrepreneurial activity and its attractiveness as a place to live, especially when compared to outrageously expensive […]
The eight-year economic recovery has been unevenly spread. Rising housing costs can be a drag on growth, because they deter worker mobility. And housing supply lags demand. To make sense of it all, Mark Fleming, chief economist for title insurer First American, contrasted cities’ housing costs with their employment in the five fastest-growing “advanced industry” (A.I.) sectors identified by Brookings, such as automotive or engineering services. As companies like Uber, Lyft, and Airbnb have set up in cities, they’ve often been greeted favorably by many consumers but run into issues with city officials. Even in the more startup-friendly environment of the United States, the companies have faced regulatory obstacles, particularly around public safety and labor rights. Uber and Lyft were banned in Austin, for instance, before they appealed to state legislators and got their businesses reinstated. Airbnb is under heavy restrictions in New York City, though many hundreds of rentals are still available. (via Fast Company)
It’s been nearly two months since Amazon served notice that it’s ending its exclusive relationship with Seattle and looking to see other cities on the side. Since then, the mega-retailer has received 238 bids for HQ2, its proposed second headquarters. These are places that are volunteering to pick up where Seattle left off, becoming a “full equal” with a headcount of 50,000 jobs, many of them superbly well-paid. (via CityLab)
Chicago’s startup ecosystem is exploding. But so are others all across the country and around the world, with varying levels of success. I wanted to talk about the mix of ingredients that are needed to make a startup ecosystem thrive over time, so leaders in your local communities can have a blueprint to follow to propel your local startup ecosystem, and hopefully, your own success in the process.
