Women from across Canada describe how difficult — and expensive — it can be to get an implanted medical device surgically removed when it causes debilitating pain.

They are four women from across this country who share one painful thing in common: Each had a medical device surgically implanted in them that was meant to improve their lives but made them sick instead.

Natasha Roach, Melanie MacDonald and Teresa Sauve each had plastic meshes implanted to treat stress urinary incontinence, while Tracy Hillier had a pair of coils implanted to prevent pregnancy.

All four say they have had to fight through not just debilitating pain but a Canadian health system that is more adept at implanting devices than removing them when something goes wrong.

Several of the women say they struggled to convince doctors their symptoms were real and linked to their device.

And when they did finally get referred to a specialist, they faced a difficult choice: keep waiting, possibly months, for a consultation in Canada, or pay thousands of dollars to have surgery in the U.S. much sooner.

Tracy Hillier of Grand Falls-Windsor, N.L., chose Option 2, spending more than $18,000 to have surgery in Texas this past September — a costly decision she doesn’t regret.

“I think it’s worth it,” she said. “I needed to get these poisonous coils out of me.”

Health Canada data obtained by CBC News under Access to Information suggests many Canadians may have faced a similar dilemma.

In the past ten years, as many as 7,800 Canadians have gone through a removal or revision surgery involving an implanted medical device — and those numbers don’t include Canadians who travelled south of the border for surgery.

Among the most common devices removed are pacemakers, hips, cochlear implants, breast implants and pelvic meshes.

It’s not clear from the data how many of the devices were removed because they had reached the end of their normal lifespan and how many were removed due to complications.

Dr. Thomas Turgeon, a Winnipeg surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacements, says contrary to what some Canadians might think, implanted devices won’t last forever.

“They’re all mechanical devices and they do slowly wear with time,” he said. “So I advise all of my patients that there is the potential that the device may fail prior to the end of their life and that they could require a revision down the road.”

But, for some Canadians, premature implant failures can be a long and painful ordeal.

More than $18,000

Tracy Hillier was 29 when she was implanted with Essure, Bayer’s permanent contraceptive coils. Her doctor had told her inserting a pair of coils to block her fallopian tubes would be safer and less invasive than getting her tubes tied, she says.

For the next seven years, she lived with pelvic pain so severe she couldn’t run or have sex with her husband without pain, she says. Then she had an epiphany last summer while watching a Netflix documentary that examined the health risks of Essure.

“I was like, ‘I’m not crazy.’ I watched it and I said: ‘That’s me.'”

Tracy Hillier paid more than $18,000 for surgery in Texas to remove her contraceptive coils. (Tracy Hillier)

She quickly decided she wanted the coils removed as soon as possible. But it was difficult trusting doctors again, she says.

“I couldn’t find anybody in Canada that I was comfortable with,” she said. “I wanted someone who knew exactly what they were doing.”

She eventually found an experienced specialist in Texas. She and her husband decided that if draining their savings and maxing out their credit cards was what it was going to take to get the coils removed, so be it.

No choice

But for some people who are suffering, expensive out-of-country surgery isn’t an option.

Toronto’s Natasha Roach says she’s been going from doctor to doctor and in and out of emergency rooms for more than a year, desperately trying to find a surgeon who will remove her pelvic mesh.

She is convinced the device is causing her frequent infections and severe pelvic pain. But trying to convince a doctor of that has been frustrating, she says.

“You’re frequently told you’re making up stories,” she said. “It’s rude, it’s arrogant, it shows a lack of compassion and empathy. It’s not a good thing to tell a woman that things are in her head.”

She’s found a doctor who specializes in pelvic surgery and reconstruction in St. Louis, Mo., but says what little money she and her husband had saved has been spent on cab fares for trips to the ER and car rentals to see specialists outside the city.

“We have nothing left financially for me to pay for the surgery.”

Several specialists told CBC News there’s a simple reason why many surgeons are reluctant to remove surgically implanted devices such as mesh: it can be extremely difficult.

In some cases, devices have been implanted in patients with life-threatening illnesses, and they often sit close to nerves, bones and, in some cases, vital organs.

Toronto pathologist Dr. Vladimir Iakovlev says the science of mesh removal is so new, it only recently got its name: Meshology. (Craig Chivers/CBC)

Toronto pathologist Dr. Vladimir Iakovlev has investigated hundreds of devices that have been surgically removed from patients, including meshes, artificial hips, heart valves and breast implants.

While inserting a device like mesh is relatively easy, he says, few surgeons have the expertise and experience necessary to remove one.

The technically challenging procedure requires carefully plucking pieces of mesh embedded deep inside the tissue, including in areas that are difficult to access, he says.

“The problem is when you remove the mesh, you create a defect where the mesh was, and then you have to repair the defect,” he said. “So you will end up with a situation sometimes worse than before the mesh was placed.”

He says the science of mesh removal is so new, it only recently got its name: Meshology.

“This field started developing when we started to realize there were some mesh complications,” he said.

Surgically removing a damaged mesh is a difficult procedure, experts tell CBC News. (Craig Chivers/CBC)

UCLA’s Dr. Shlomo Raz is one of those specialized surgeons with experience removing meshes.

He says he has removed mesh stuck in pelvic bones, muscle walls, bowels and rectums. It’s a delicate operation, “but if the patient has pelvic pain, you must remove all the mesh,” he said.

He has done the procedure on more than 1,800 women, including “a significant number of Canadians,” he said.

“They tell us that nobody believes them,” he said. “They are not treated or given pain medication … and their surgeries are constantly postponed.”

‘It will break you down’

Long waits and disbelief. That was Melanie MacDonald’s experience for several years.

The Lethbridge, Alta., woman had mesh implanted in 2004.

Fourteen years later, the 45-year-old says she has had two additional surgeries to correct problems with the device. MacDonald says she’s recently developed tremors and shakes like a person with Parkinson’s disease, one of her many autoimmune symptoms.

Melanie MacDonald of Lethbridge, Alta., has a consultation with a surgeon scheduled for March in Victoria. She’s hoping to have her pelvic mesh removed. (Melanie Macdonald)

She has been on long-term disability leave from her job as a parole officer since March 2017, and is suing the manufacturer of her mesh.

“I thought I was gonna to plow through pain,” she said. “But chronic pain doesn’t work that way. It will break you down, and it wins.”

She is now permanently disabled and occasionally struggles with depression, she says.

Last month, she was referred to a surgeon in Victoria, who can see her in March.

“I’m very fortunate because it can take up to two years to get in.”

Macdonald said she won’t know until her consultation if the mesh can be removed.

“I know the surgery’s not going to be a magic wand … But even to knock down the pain by 50 per cent would be huge.”

Removals not without risks

While Tracy Hillier feels better since having her two coils removed in Texas, the procedure had unexpected consequences.

When she woke up after the surgery, she learned her surgeon had to remove her fallopian tubes, cervix and uterus along with the Essure coils.

She was told there was no other way to remove one of the coils, which had almost gone through the wall of the uterus.

“I knew there was something wrong,” she said. “I felt validated, but I felt violated.”

The small U.S. firm that invented Essure was sold to Bayer in 2013.

In a statement, Bayer said it stands “by the safety and efficacy” of its device, which has been demonstrated by “an extensive body of research involving more than 200,000 women over the past two decades.”

Bayer stopped selling Essure in Canada in 2017. The company said its decision was based on “market specific factors,” including a decrease in sales.

No guarantee

Dr. Raz says he can’t promise any patient that their life will go back to normal after a complete mesh removal.

“Seventy per cent of the patients are improved but not totally cured,” he said. “Thirty per cent are permanently disabled, even after the operation is completed.”

My whole life has changed, and not for the better.– Teresa Sauve

Victoria’s Teresa Sauve knows what that’s like.

She was told she’ll likely live the rest of her life with fibromyalgia and chronic pain so intense that some days she can’t even walk. She’ll likely need to undergo additional surgery to remove scar tissue that formed after her removal procedure.

She says she doesn’t think regulators realize the long-term consequences some implantable devices can have on patients.

“They have taken away people’s lives. And not only my life, my husband’s life, my kids’ life, my grandkids’ life,” she said.

“My whole life has been changed, and not for the better.”

Waller waits for Ryder to lock in Winx’s target https://briefnews.eu/waller-waits-for-ryder-to-lock-in-winxs-target/ https://briefnews.eu/waller-waits-for-ryder-to-lock-in-winxs-target/#respond Sat, 20 Jan 2018 06:49:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/waller-waits-for-ryder-to-lock-in-winxs-target/ CHRIS Waller said no decision has been made on when Winx’s racing career will end as the mighty mare is no certainty to defend her Queen Elizabeth crown this autumn if she heads overseas.

Winx will make her first public appearance of the year in a barrier trial at Rosehill Gardens on Monday and Waller, who has hinted in recent weeks she will head overseas if 100 per cent this year, said the champion mare’s autumn plans were still to be confirmed.

SUPER DEBUT: ESTIJAAB SHOWS SLIPPER POTENTIAL

“I’ve said all along we will make the decision after the George Ryder whether she goes to the Queen Elizabeth or whether we stop there and do look at going to Ascot or whether there are other things,” he said.

Asked whether there was enough time for Winx to run in the Queen Elizabeth and then travel to England for Royal Ascot, Waller said: “I’m not sure.”

Waller said Winx is almost certain to run in the Apollo Stakes (1400m) first-up at Royal Randwick on February 17 before most likely contesting the Chipping Norton Stakes and George Ryder.

Asked whether the discussion had been had on whether 2018 would be Winx’s final year racing, Waller said it had not.

BRAVE or silly? One punter has already plonked $ 15,000 on Winx to win the Apollo Stakes in TAB’s all-in market. The punter will lose their $ 15,000 if, for whatever reason, Winx doesn’t line up in the Apollo.

Mallyon moves north

GROUP 1-winning jockey Katelyn Mallyon has moved to Sydney to “test the waters” and be closer to her partner James McDonald.

Mallyon moved to Sydney last weekend and had five rides at Canberra on Friday.

“Obviously my partner James McDonald is based in Sydney,” she said. “It was inevitable I was going to come up here at some stage and I thought I would come up here and give it a crack at riding and see how it goes.

“I’m at Randwick and riding work for John O’Shea and Gai Waterhouse and I’m just feeling my way and obviously it’s a change and I’ve never really left Melbourne before.

“I’m excited to see what I can do here and I would like to have good success in Sydney.”

QUEENSLAND apprentices Baylee Nothdurft and Nick Keal were slapped with significant bans after a bizarre incident in race five at Toowoomba on Friday night.

Nothdurft was suspended for four weeks after being found guilty of raising his elbow and making contact with Keal near the 1000m mark of the race. Keal was then hit with a three-week ban for altering his whip action near the 300m in an endeavour to strike either Nothdurft or the rival rider’s mount.

A young woman was arrested in Long Island, New York after robbing a bank while her 6-year-old daughter was apparently waiting in a taxi, local police said.

Diana Marini, 28, entered Chase Bank in Islandia, Long Island and handed a note demanding cash on Saturday afternoon, Suffolk County Police said in a statement. “The teller complied” and the woman grabbed an undisclosed amount of cash.

She fled in the taxi which was waiting for her outside. The “gangster’s” luck did not last for long, however, as police quickly tracked down the vehicle and arrested the woman. Apart from Marini, they found her 6-year-old daughter inside the car. The girl was apparently waiting in the taxi while her mother robbed the bank.

Marini, from Brentwood, Long Island, was charged with robbery and endangering the welfare of a child, police said. The girl was released to family members.

Nintendo Switch Stock: Gamestop waits on more as Nintendo reveal July restock plans https://briefnews.eu/nintendo-switch-stock-gamestop-waits-on-more-as-nintendo-reveal-july-restock-plans/ https://briefnews.eu/nintendo-switch-stock-gamestop-waits-on-more-as-nintendo-reveal-july-restock-plans/#respond Mon, 03 Jul 2017 19:18:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nintendo-switch-stock-gamestop-waits-on-more-as-nintendo-reveal-july-restock-plans/

Nintendo have revealed that demand has far surpassed their original estimates and they’re now looking to have an install base of around 10m by the end of the current fiscal year.

But while Nintendo strive to boost their production numbers to keep up with supply, Nintendo Switch stock at Gamestop and GAME is still unable to keep up.

A statement from Nintendo to MCVUK explains: “”For Nintendo Switch, our initial plan for the fiscal year ended March 2017 was to ship two million units by the end of March, but we increased production which resulted in shipping 2.74 million units globally.

“For products like Nintendo Switch, it takes time to procure parts and run production, so we perform demand estimates far in advance of launch. Actual demand following the launch of these products surpassed our estimates globally.

“To take advantage of this favorable momentum, we will continue to bolster our manufacturing facilities and strive to increase production in preparation for the Christmas period, which has been factored into our forecast of shipping 10 million units globally by the end of this fiscal year.”

But while increases in production have been promised, There still isn’t enough Nintendo Switch stock at places like Gamestop.

Nintendo have confirmed that they expect more stock to arrive later this month, adding: “We anticipate more stock to arrive in mid-July. Customer orders will be fulfilled in the order they are placed.”

Players in the UK mostly have access to pre order pages for the Nintendo Switch, effectively putting down a deposit so that they can queue for a system.

A message from GAME explains: “At this time we have not received official confirmation of the next stock delivery of this product.

“We are working extremely hard with Nintendo to receive more stock of the Nintendo Switch for customers.

“Until we have our stock delivery confirmed by Nintendo, a placeholder date of TBC has been put onto this product. This can change once the delivery of stock has been confirmed and the status of your order will change accordingly.”

Having called a couple of Gamestop stores across the United States, it appears that many stores are waiting for an email from Nintendo on when they can expect the next shipments to go out.

Fans can still sign up to have their name taken so that they are notified as soon as new stock is available.

One store employee told the Express Online that fans could be waiting as little as a week, or as long as a month before more stock is made available.

It should be noted that this was confirmed at one local store, meaning that the situation could be completely different at another location in the United States.

China and Europe are taking the lead on climate as the world waits on Trump https://briefnews.eu/china-and-europe-are-taking-the-lead-on-climate-as-the-world-waits-on-trump/ https://briefnews.eu/china-and-europe-are-taking-the-lead-on-climate-as-the-world-waits-on-trump/#respond Thu, 01 Jun 2017 11:28:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/china-and-europe-are-taking-the-lead-on-climate-as-the-world-waits-on-trump/ Donald TrumpAP Photo/Susan Walsh

Berlin (AFP) – China and Europe took the lead Thursday on forging on with the Paris climate accord, as fears grew US President Donald Trump would pull Washington out of the landmark deal.

After a day of rumours about the Republican leader’s plans, with some aides reportedly saying a withdrawal was likely and others saying no decision had been taken, Trump said he was ready to make his stance known.

“I will be announcing my decision on Paris Accord, Thursday at 3:00 P.M. The White House Rose Garden. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” the US leader said in a tweet, punctuating the post with his campaign slogan.

Hours ahead of his 1900 GMT announcement, the world’s biggest carbon emitter China pledged to stay the course on implementing the 2015 accord.

Premier Li Keqiang said it was in China’s own interest to do so, and urged other countries to do likewise.

“China will continue to implement promises made in the Paris Agreement, to move towards the 2030 goal step by step steadfastly,” Li said in a Berlin joint press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

“But of course, we also hope to do this in cooperation with others,” added Li, as Merkel hailed China’s pledge.

China has been investing billions in clean energy infrastructure, as its leaders battle to clear up the notorious choking pollution enveloping its biggest cities, including Beijing.

Li, who was due to travel to Brussels for a summit with the European Union later Thursday, was expected to stress the same message there.

China and the US are responsible for some 40 percent of the world’s emissions and experts have warned that it is vital for both to remain in the Paris agreement if it is to have any chance of succeeding.

The leader of Asia’s other behemoth, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had said Tuesday, also in Berlin, that failing to act on climate change would be “morally criminal”.

Trump raised alarm bells when he refused to sign up to a pledge on the deal at last week’s G7 meeting in Italy.

Merkel on Saturday labelled the result of the “six against one” discussion “very difficult, not to say very unsatisfactory”.

‘That’s not acceptable’

With media reports swirling that Trump had decided to pull Washington out of the accord, America’s international allies and Trump’s domestic opponents have lashed out at the billionaire.

The White House did not confirm those reports, and it was unclear whether Trump would fully scrap US participation, merely water down US emissions objectives — or surprise everyone with a decision to follow the status quo.

A US withdrawal would come less than 18 months after the historic 196-nation pact was adopted in the French capital, the fruit of a hard-fought agreement between Beijing and Washington under Barack Obama’s leadership.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker hit out at Trump’s purported decision.

“I am a transatlanticist. But if the US president in the next hours and days says that he will get out of the Paris accord, then it’s the responsibility of Europe to say: that’s not acceptable.

“It’s not about the future of the European people, it’s above all about the future of people elsewhere,” warned Juncker on Wednesday.

He noted that it would take three or four years to exit from the Paris deal, and revealed that world leaders had sought to explain that to Trump at the G7 summit.

“As it appears, that attempt failed,” said Juncker. “But a rule is a rule. And everyone must respect it. Not everything that is a rule, and not everything that stands in an international agreement is fake news.”

European Union President Donald Tusk also issued a plea to Trump on Twitter, saying: “please don’t change the (political) climate for the worse.”

‘I’ll get back to you’

The Paris agreement commits signatories to efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming, which is blamed for melting ice caps and glaciers, rising sea levels and more violent weather events.

They vowed steps to keep the worldwide rise in temperatures “well below” two degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) from pre-industrial times and to “pursue efforts” to hold the increase under 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Since taking office on January 20, Trump, who has called climate change a “hoax”, has sent contradictory signals on the Paris deal.

When asked on Tuesday whether Trump believes human activity is contributing to climate change, White House spokesman Sean Spicer told reporters, “Honestly, I haven’t asked him that. I can get back to you.”

Trump’s new head of the Environmental Protection Agency, climate sceptic Scott Pruitt, has said he wants Washington to quit the Paris deal.

But other top Trump advisers, including his daughter Ivanka and Gary Cohn, the head of the president’s National Economic Council, are said to favour staying in the treaty.

A dozen large companies including oil major BP, agrochemical giant DuPont, Google, Intel and Microsoft, have also urged Trump to remain part of the deal.

A report from Business Insider this morning claims that Apple will no longer be selling LG’s flawed 5K UltraFine Thunderbolt display in its retail stores. The retail listing in Apple’s online store, Business Insider continues, would also be pulled, completely halting sales of the monitor. After conversing with Apple, we can report that this is only partially true; you won’t be able to go into Apple’s retail stores to buy the display for the next few weeks, but only because Apple is waiting for LG to fix the display and manufacture new ones before it resumes sales. In the meantime, interested buyers are still able to order the monitor on Apple’s site.

The current estimated wait time for a fixed version of the monitor is five to six weeks. If you order before the end of March, the display still comes with the 25-percent discount Apple is offering on most USB-C and Thunderbolt dongles, cables, and accessories.

Shipments of the monitors have halted because of an EM shielding issue that caused problems when the monitors were placed within a few feet of a Wi-Fi router. LG has already acknowledged the issue and said that models manufactured after February 2017 wouldn’t be affected by the defect.
