Now that Taika Waititi has given the once-somber Thor a jubilant, comedy-forward makeover, what Marvel character could be next? Of course, Marvel characters aren’t lacking a funny bone — their tongue-in-cheek rapport is one of the foundations of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But maybe there are a few sticks in the mud who could use a good Taika Waititi-style mockumentary.
Waititi’s first choice: Vision.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Waititi was asked which Marvel character he would like to tackle next. “Well, obviously apart from Korg, I would love to see Vision,” he responded seriously before the interview spiraled into one long hilarious bit. He continued:
“How about a mockumentary? What We Do in the Shadows meets a Vision movie. See what he gets up to, what it’s like in his day-to-day life. I know what he does sometimes, he’s cooking for Scarlet Witch. So he likes to cook.”
The reporter suggests a rom-com between Vision and Scarlet Witch, to which Waititi widens his eyes and nods. “The poster would be them standing back-to-back” he excitedly declares, before getting into the pose himself, with the female reporter standing in for Scarlet Witch.
Waititi launches into a description of a rom-com that sounds like a cross between Four Christmases and every Katherine Heigl movie, putting on a dramatic grimace as he says, “I’m like the kind of happy-go-luck idiot who will never settle down, never get a job. And you’re like ‘business, business, business.”
Then things take a turn for the weird:
“Then we realize because we’re cojoined twins, it was never going to work. We were born attached at the back. It’s not really a rom-com, it’s more like a fam-com.”
It’s a fun bit, but it makes me a little sad that we’ll probably never get to see a rom-com between Vision and Scarlet Witch apart from Vision’s fuddy-duddy attempts to cook paprikash in Captain America: Civil War. Their story seems to be inevitably tied to tragedy, as Vision’s dark scenes in Avengers: Infinity War forebode. Even in the comics, when they two get married and have a child, it transforms into one of the most twisted relationships in Marvel Comics history.
But you know what? A mockumentary short sounds like a great idea. Maybe Waititi was on to something. We can punctuate these inevitable tragic turns in Vision and Scarlet Witch’s relationship with a mockumentary that shows them struggling to reconcile their blushing first feelings with Vision’s unique anatomy. Bring back the One-Shot short films and put Taika Waititi in charge, is what I’m saying Marvel.

Taika Waititi has gone from indie filmmaker to blockbuster super-director with the success of Thor: Ragnarok, which means it’s only a matter of time before he moves on to even bigger things. Like Star Wars, for example. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy recently confirmed that she’d be thrilled to have Waititi direct a Star Wars film, and Waititi has expressed a vague interest in the past. So don’t be surprised if this becomes a done deal at some point.
After helming hilarious indie comedies like What We Do In the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Taika Waititi graduated to big blockbuster filmmaking with Thor: Ragnarok. The film was a hit at the box office, and received some of the best MCU reviews to date, which can only mean that Waititi’s career will continue onward and upward. The filmmaker has already been mentioned as a possible director for the live-action Akira, and now he can add the Star Wars franchise to his possible list of projects. Speaking with Newshub, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said she would “love for [Waititi] to direct a Star Wars movie.” Kennedy then added, “I think he has exactly the right sensibility. It was very exciting to see him step into the Marvel universe and do such an amazing job with Thor.”
For his part, Waititi has expressed interest in his patented humorous way, telling Uproxx, “I’m not an idiot. Who would actually say no to Star Wars?” He also had this to say on Twitter:
Waititi is obviously referring to several tumultuous behind-the-scenes events of various recent Star Wars films, like the rumors that Gareth Edwards was essentially removed from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story so that Tony Gilroy could handle reshoots, the firing of Phil Lord and Chris Miller from Solo: A Star Wars Story, the firing of Fantastic Four director Josh Trank from another Star Wars Anthology film, and Colin Trevorrow departing Star Wars: Episode IX. The Star Wars films have a high turnover rate.
That said, Waititi is clearly a talented filmmaker, and he would no doubt bring the same sense of lighthearted humor he brought to Thor: Ragnarok to the Star Wars franchise. That said, it would be really, really, really cool if Kathleen Kennedy would start considering female filmmakers to helm one of the many future Star Wars movies in the works. There are many talented female directors out there who would probably leap at the chance to direct a film in this franchise. All Kathleen Kennedy has to do is offer them the chance.

I’d imagine that directing a Marvel Studios movie would come with a tremendous amount of pressure, but Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi made it look like a breeze. Not only did he completely overhaul the Thor franchise into an outright comedy (a decision that seemed to work wonders at the box office), but the New Zealand-born Waititi stepped in and played Korg, one of the movie’s funniest supporting characters. No sweat.
But apparently directing and playing one character wasn’t enough: he ended up playing four characters in the movie. Read about all of the Taika Waititi Thor Ragnarok characters below.
In a new interview for the Empire Magazine podcast, Waititi revealed that he played three characters in the movie – and we actually already knew about two of them. He provided his voice and did the performance-capture for Korg, the delightfully-accented Kronan who’s trying to organize a revolution on Sakaar and ends up fighting alongside Thor and his pals during the movie’s climax. And in our visit to the movie’s Australian set, we spoke with Waititi and he mentioned that he also provided the performance-capture work for the fire demon Surtur, although that character’s voice was eventually provided by actor Clancy Brown (The Shawshank Redemption).
But Waititi also played a much smaller role. As he told the podcast:
“I am one of the heads on the three-headed alien, this character called Haju. I’m the head on the right. And I’m also the motion-capture for Surtur.”
So that’s three…but what about the fourth character? While his work on the fourth character wasn’t quite as involved, the director told us on the set that he did some uncredited character work when the occasion called for it:
“Often I’ll jump in [for other mocap stuff]. Mark [Ruffalo] is no longer here so I’ll jump in for Hulk’s stuff. We have stand-ins, but they’re not actors, and they don’t have timing and stuff. So I’ll jump in for those things every now and then.”
This isn’t the first time a Marvel director has stepped in front of the camera for performance capture work. Remember, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn did all of the performance-capture work for Baby Groot’s dancing in both Guardians films. But even Gunn’s earnest and goofy dance moves pale in comparison to the work required to play three different performance-captured characters in your own movie. Major props to Waititi for pulling that off.
Thor: Ragnarok is in theaters now.

Taika Waititi has made the leap to big blockbuster filmmaking with Thor: Ragnarok, set to hit theaters this week. Already tracking to be a box office hit, Thor‘s success will likely launch Waititi to helming even bigger projects. His name has already been mentioned several times in connection with the live-action Akira movie, and while there’s no official deal yet, Waititi has weighed-in on what type of Akira film he might make.
Will Thor: Ragnarok and What We Do In the Shadows director Taika Waititi helm the live-action Akira? It’s beginning to look more and more likely. After Jordan Peele passed on the project, Waititi’s name was mentioned in connection with the possible live-action take on the 1988 animated film adaptation of the comic book by Katsuhiro Otomo.
In the past, Waititi has said he would not whitewash the potential cast, a mistake so many recent Hollywood adaptations of Asian-based properties have made. “Asian teenagers would be the way to do it for me,” Waititi said in the past, “and probably no, not, like no name, I mean sort of unfound, untapped talent. Yeah, I’d probably want to take it a bit back more towards the books.”
Now Waititi has offered another hint about how he’d handle his live-action Akira. Rather than make a film adaptation of the 1988 anime, Waititi would like to adhere closer to the comic book source material. In an interview with Screen Rant, the filmmaker says what he’d really love to do is make something unique from the anime by going back to the books:
“I always felt like it was something that could do with a unique take. But, I don’t believe the world needs a remake of the anime, I think for me it would be, if there’s any real possibility for doing it, I would really just want to look at an adaptation of the books in a new way.”
Akira is set in 2019, 31 years the Japanese government dropped a nuclear bomb on Tokyo. In the story, bike gang leader Kaneda struggles to save his friend Tetsuo from a secret government project. The 1988 film adaptation of Akira took most of the characters and themes from the comic by Katsuhiro Otomo, but as the comic was well-over 2000 pages and a lot of material was excised, particularly from the middle of the book. Here’s the comic’s official synopsis:
Welcome to Neo-Tokyo, built on the ashes of a Tokyo annihilated by a blast of unknown origin that triggered World War III. The lives of two streetwise teenage friends, Tetsuo and Kaneda, change forever when paranormal abilities begin to waken in Tetsuo, making him a target for a shadowy agency that will stop at nothing to prevent another catastrophe like the one that leveled Tokyo. At the core of the agency’s motivation is a raw, all-consuming fear of an unthinkable, monstrous power known only as Akira.
Just when (and if) Waititi makes his live-action Akira remains to be seen. After Thor: Ragnarok, the filmmaker has the stop-motion animated Bubbles, a comedy told from the point of view of Michael Jackson’s pet chimp.

This coming weekend brings Thor: Ragnarok to theaters, the critically acclaimed third installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise following the mighty Thor and his adventures around the galaxy. What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople director Taika Waititi was hired behind the camera to infuse the comic book sequel with even more comedy than we’ve come to expect from Marvel Studios, and if given the opportunity, he’d like to bring those sensibilities to another desired Marvel character, and it’s one you might not expect: Black Widow.
Taika Waititi mentioned his desire to to make a Black Widow comedy during an interview with our old pal Germain Lussier at io9. Waititi was asked if there were any other Marvel characters that the director felt he might be able to blend well with his sense of humor, and he surprisingly said, “In all honesty, I reckon I could probably bring something pretty unique to any of the franchises. So I’d love to see Black Widow.”
Waitit elaborated as to why he has his sights set on the assassin, SHIELD agent and Avenger, played by Scarlett Johansson:
“[I’d like to see] Black Widow as something crazy and a bit funnier than we expect it to be. Because we know her story and it’s very sullen and very dark and her history is very dark. But! What’s the funny version of that? What’s the more entertaining version of that?”
While that sounds rather outlandish, and to some fans maybe even undesirable, it’s not difficult to imagine. After all, Black Widow has plenty of playful banter with her longtime SHIELD partner Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner), aka Hawkeye. We’ve even seen them joke around with each other while fighting in Captain America: Civil War, and I could easily see a more comedic angle being brought to a movie that gives us more background for the two skilled SHIELD agents.
Remember, the Budapest mission referenced in The Avengers? That could easily be fleshed out in an action comedy starring both Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner. Some kind of situation where the two are forced to pretend to be married, perhaps each having a difference of opinion as to how part of the mission should be carried out, creating a conflict between the two spies. I’m thinking of a tone akin to Mr. and Mrs. Smith, but that’s just one idea.
The fact that Waititi is thinking outside of the box is the reason the director was wanted by Marvel Studios to begin with. If the reviews of Thor: Ragnarok are any indicator, he’s reinvigorated a franchise that wasn’t the most beloved, even if the character of Thor was a favorite of plenty of fans. That’s kind of why Waititi was drawn to the franchise to begin with:
“I really go for the underdog. [And] I think there’s a way in with any of the characters. You just have to find it and find what honors what’s already there with the source material but also brings it into a more entertaining form for the audience.”
Keep in mind that there’s no Black Widow movie in active development (as far as we know), and this is merely a proposal from Waititi of what character he’d like to play with. If Thor: Ragnarok is successful (which appears to be the case since the movie has already earned over $ 107 million at the international box office), then Marvel will probably be happy to hear any ideas that Waititi has for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so maybe we’ll get a Black Widow comedy sometime down the road.
Would you like to see a comedic approach to Black Widow? Or does she need a more serious, dramatic story?

After almost a decade of Marvel movies, the first female standalone will finally be released in the form of Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel in 2019.
However for the last few years some fans have been asking for a Black Widow solo movie starring Scarlett.
Now Thor Ragnarok director Taika has revealed he would like to helm the project, but as a comedy.
According to MovieWeb, he said: “In all honesty, I reckon I could probably bring something pretty unique to any of the franchises.”
She said: “I’ve talked to Kevin Feige about it. We’re creatively really compatible.
“I think we both agree that the character is right for a standalone. It’s just a case of timing at this point, for both Marvel and myself.
“Marvel has a really huge roster. They’re looking four years ahead. I also have a lot of things that I want to do. I have a lot of things that I’m developing. If I did it, I would dedicate myself completely to making it amazing.
“It would have to be the best version that movie could possibly be. Otherwise, I would never do it. And I don’t know if I have the capacity for it, or if Marvel has the capacity for it.”
Before he somehow tricked Marvel Studios into handing him a couple hundred million dollars to make Thor: Ragnarok, Taika Waititi co-directed the vampire comedy What We Do in the Shadows. If you haven’t seen that movie, you should change that – it may very well be one of the funniest movies of the past decade. Or maybe all time. It certainly feels like it.
But now that he has some of of that sweet, sweet Marvel Cinematic Universe in his veins, Waititi is thinking bigger. Why not just make that much-talked-about spin-off movie when you can also produce a What We Do in the Shadows TV show?
Speaking with Fandango, Waititi revealed that he’s currently developing a version of the film for American television:
“We’re trying to develop a U.S. version of What We Do in the Shadows. You know, set here in the states, but a TV show.”
That’s where the details end, but it’s easy to imagine the film making the leap without much issue. After all, What We Do in the Shadows is a faux documentary series about vampires sharing a home together in New Zealand, arguing about chores when they’re not awkwardly hitting the club or bringing victims home to murder. While the film’s unapologetic (and hilarious!) ultra-violence makes it seem like a great fit for HBO, Showtime, or Starz, it’s a core concept that could very easily play on NBC.
Of course, the vampires from the original movie don’t exist in a vacuum. They are part of a much larger (and charmingly mundane) supernatural world full of werewolves and other entities. Waititi has spoken before about a werewolf-centric spin-off film called We’re Wolves and he told Fandango that it’s still in the works:
“We’re still trying to write that. We’re doing those [other shows] as well as trying to come up with ideas for this werewolf movie. It will happen!”
Also in the works: a second spin-off movie about the two cops from the first film as they investigate paranormal activity. Waititi describes it as a “mockumentary X-Files” and says production is set to begin soon.
Part of the charm of What We Do in the Shadows stems from how it acts as a small window to a crazier world with a rich and bizarre history. Will two spin-off movies dilute that? Would an American TV adaptation take this endearing concept and run it in to the ground? My brain says “Yes,” but my heart says “Trust Taika Waititi, one of the funniest and cleverest filmmakers working at the moment.”
So I’ll listen to my heart…and hope that the What We Do in the Shadows TV show is less of a remake and more of a companion piece, set in the same universe but half a world away. In the meantime, it certainly sounds like the bonkers and comedy-driven Thor: Ragnarok will suffice in supplying our Waititi fix.

The 42-year-old Kiki is known for the improvised comedy of his indie hits like What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople.
Having now entered the world of blockbusters with Thor Ragnarok, movie fans are wondering if he would consider directing an upcoming Star Wars spin-off.
Speaking with the New York Times, Taika essentially ruled himself out, but appeared committed to more Marvel films.
The filmmaker said: “That particular franchise seems really hard. There’s not much room for someone like me.”
Taika continued: “Through its narrow canon, the tone of Star Wars has always been determinedly self-serious, whereas the Marvel movies, like the decades of comics they sprang from, veer wildly from high drama to low comedy.
“And improvisation has been a tool in every Marvel movie since Robert Downey Jr. riffed his way through Iron Man.”
Following the dismissal of Star Wars Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow and Han Solo movie’s Chris Miller and Phil Lord, Taika was asked on Twitter if he would consider making a movie for the franchise.
He wrote: “Lolz. I like to complete my films. I’d be fired within a week.”
Meanwhile Marvel president Kevin Feige is confident he’ll work with Taika again.
The producer said: “I would love, love, love to work with Taika again and I have every confidence that we will.”
Thor Ragnarok is released in UK cinemas on October 24, 2017.
