With the refresh of the Cadillac CT6 for 2019, Cadillac welcomes the first CT6 V-Sport as well as a new trim strategy. The changes at the front for the CT6 lineup don’t appear substantial viewed head-on, one needs a side view to appreciate the greater three-dimensionality. Thinner headlights and a thinner bumper above a slightly larger lower front intake emphasize the mesh grille, and the vertical LED DRLs make more dramatic statements thanks to those narrower headlights. By angling the main units back toward the rear of the sedan, the CT6 now has a certified, sculpted snout. The rework appears to add substantial overhang, but overall length only increases by a tenth of an inch, to 204.1 inches.

What’s under the V-Sport’s probing hood is just as interesting as the redesign and the sporting thrust: A clean-sheet design of a 4.2-liter DOHC twin-turbo V8. In the V-Sport, the engine produces 550 horsepower and a Bentley-esque 627 pound-feet of torque. As an optional engine elsewhere in the CT6 range, the same engine produces 500 hp and 553 lb-ft. The displacement, specs, plus the fact that “each engine will be hand-built at the Performance Build Center in Bowling Green, Kentucky” indicate this was one of the rumored powerplants for the mid-engine Corvette. The coming sports car was tipped to get a 4.2-liter and 5.5-liter DOHC twin-turbo V8. Based on the position of the turbos in this engine vs. their positions in the previous CAD drawings, we assume the drawings represented the 5.5-liter.

The 4.2-liter item features an aluminum block, heads, and pistons, direct injection with a 9.8:1 compression ratio, cylinder deactivation, cylinder oil jets, and a variable-pressure oil system. The twin-scroll turbochargers capable of 20 pounds of boost sit in the 90-degree vee, working alongside twin water-to-air intercoolers, twin throttle bodies, and twin electric wastegates. Cadillac says 90 percent of torque arrives at 2,000 rpm and loiters through 5,200 rpm. Power gets sent through GM’s 10L90 ten-speed automatic transmission and on to the standard all-wheel-drive system.

Cadillac didn’t list 0-to-60-mph times in its press release, but engineers have track-worthy alacrity in mind for the CT6 V-Sport. The white coats tweaked the steering and Magnetic Ride Control dampers, installed a limited slip differential, and a new 19-inch Brembo Monoblock brake system with four pistons in front and performance pads. The V-Sport rides on Goodyear summer-only performance tires. To make sure the engine sounds the part, an active exhaust pumps up the volume through four quad pipes. And the sedan has a Track Mode that activates a more serious calibration throughout, changing the dynamic torque split, and modifying the details on the “Track-tuned Active Rear Steer.”

Standard LED headlights, Gloss Black side window trim, and exclusive 20-inch wheels begin to differentiate the V-Sport model; non-V-Sport models get “high-lumen” headlights. In back, redesigned taillights across the range get horizontal sections in the decklid that cross the shutline, in a mirrored “7” motif. The decklid features an integrated spoiler, and a new chrome trim element runs between the taillights.

Inside, the Cadillac User Experience (CUE) moves to the generation already rolled out in the smaller sedans. Benefits include a new rotary controller and buttons. The controller handles scrolling, and oversees commands like volume and audio track selection, the buttons take one directly to menu pages like Home, Phone, and Navigation. There are upgraded response times and voice recognition, and OTA updates. The five-watt wireless charging mat grows to accept larger phones, and the rearview mirror that contains the rearview camera image goes frameless and adds zoom and tilt.

The refreshed CT6 ushers in a new forked lineup strategy for the brand’s entire range, putting a Luxury trim on one side and a Sport trim on the other, our guess being a base trim will support the enterprise. This will mean a reorganization of the current choices; the 2018 CT6 comes in four flavors, Standard, Luxury, Premium Luxury, and Platinum.

The XTS is a standout in Cadillac’s current lineup. It’s a throwback to the automaker’s cars of the ’90s and early 2000s. It’s big, comfy and packs a punch under the hood, but there’s only a slight pretense of sportiness, despite the V-Sport moniker. If you want a Cadillac that handles, buy a CTS or ATS. Still, there’s nothing wrong with being a big, slightly soft cruiser. Not everyone is out to conquer the Nürburgring. Some people just want comfy seats and a half-mile of wheelbase.

Our tester is the range-topping Platinum V-Sport trim. At $ 73,040, it’s not exactly cheap. That said, you do get a hell of a lot for your money. This car has heated and cooled massaging front seats with 22-way power adjustment, a heated steering wheel, heads-up display, the latest version of Cadillac’s infotainment system, Bose surround sound, LED headlights and adaptive cruise control. That’s not including all the V-Sport goodies like Brembo brakes, magnetic ride and a howling 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6.

Senior Editor, Green, John Beltz Snyder — Hopping in the Cadillac XTS, the familiar surroundings created a certain set of expectations. Like judging a book by its cover, it’s an easy trap to judge a Cadillac by its interior (they all feel the same to me). Some of what I expected, I got: a smooth ride, hearty pep, robust driver assist and fussy audio and HVAC controls.

What surprised me was just how urgent this motor is. On paper, that should come as no surprise. The V-Sport’s 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6, making 410 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, is bound to pack a punch. You almost forget what that should feel like, though, until you put your right foot down. There’s no lag, and despite the all-wheel drive, there’s even a little torque steer. The lightness of the steering means it’s no difficult task to account for it, though.

Speaking of steering, I actually enjoyed bending this through tight corners. It’s a breeze to saw the tiller back and forth, and the car communicates the interaction between the tires — especially up front — with the road. I’d like to take this Caddy to the track.

Associate Editor Reese Counts: I liked this car way more than I thought I would. I was expecting a DTS or STS with a fresh face and a bit more punch. In a way, that’s what this is, but I don’t mean that as a knock. I don’t need every car I drive to be able to put down hot laps. Sometimes I want something with soft seats (that massage!) and a big engine to get me home quickly. That’s where this car really shines. I could spend all day behind the wheel of this and not get tired. I’m not sure I could say the same of a CTS-V.

It quickly became apparent that the car wasn’t designed to go around a corner with any true grace. It’s quick, but there’s lots of body roll and a bit of understeer thanks to the all-wheel-drive system. The brakes are good, though there’s a lot of mass to slow down. As John mentioned, there’s a touch of torque steer, but it’s nothing terrible. If you’re looking for something with some real jazz, go look at the CTS V-Sport instead. This is a cruiser with a big heart.

And for that I was grateful. All I really did this week was run around greater Detroit. I made an airport run at 5 p.m. and got to slog through an hour or so worth of traffic to my house. The adaptive cruise is one of the best systems I’ve used. After the gym, the heated and massaging seats were a wonderful welcome. The infotainment system is vastly improved, though it took ages for Android Auto to load up. Even then there were some occasional cuts in audio.

This isn’t the Cadillac for me, but it might be the car for someone.
