Former U.S. President Bill Clinton speaks during an interview at the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) in New York September 25, 2013. The CGI was created by Bill Clinton in 2005 to gather global leaders to discuss solutions to the world's problems.

  • Former President Bill Clinton says Democrats have a shot of holding Congress in 2022.
  • But Clinton warned Republicans will "scare the living daylights" out of swing voters.
  • Clinton told CNN Republicans "made critical race theory sound worse than smallpox" in 2021.

Former President Bill Clinton said Democrats can retain control of Congress in the 2022 midterms, but warns Republicans will "scare the living daylights out of swing voters" in an interview with CNN's Fareed Zakaria.

Zakaria asked Clinton if Democrats, who have seen encouraging signs about their midterm prospects in recent weeks, can break the decades-long trend of the president's party losing control of Congress in midterm elections.

"Absolutely we could hold both these Houses, but we have to say the right things," Clinton told Zakaria in the interview, which aired Sunday. "And we have to know the Republicans always close well. Why? Because they find some new way to scare the living daylights out of swing voters about something. That's what they did in 2021 when they made critical race theory sound worse than smallpox."

In 2021, Republicans swept the top three statewide offices in Virginia, which had previously been trending towards Democrats, and put up an unexpectedly strong showing in New Jersey's gubernatorial race partly by mobilizing voters, especially parents, over both the teaching of race in schools and COVID-19 induced school closures.

"They just scare people," Clinton added. "And in the end, the breakpoint in American politics is not that much different than the 90s. You still have to get those people, it's just that there's so many fewer of them, because as the parties have gotten more ideological and clear and somehow psychically intolerant, they pull more and more people towards the extremes."

Increased polarization and partisanship since Clinton held office in the 1990s means fewer persuadable swing voters and fewer willing to cross party lines. The 2020 election, for example, saw record-low numbers of voters splitting their tickets between elect. But Clinton still argued that "there's some people who are hanging on there and trying to think, and trying to understand what's going on."

Zakaria also asked Clinton about the recent death of Ken Starr.

The hard-charging special prosecutor, who died at age 76, doggedly investigated the Clintons first in the Whitewater probe, over their real estate dealings in Arkansas. The investigation then zeroed in on Clinton's extramarital affair with then-White House intern Monica Lewinsky, which became the biggest scandal of his presidency and led to his impeachment.

"Well, I read the obituary, and I realized that his family loved him, and I think that's something to be grateful for, and when your life is over that's all there is to say," Clinton said of Starr."But I was taught not to talk about people that I — you know. I have nothing to say. Except I'm glad he died with the love of his family."

All over US, polling places freeze when faced with the unexpected: voters https://briefnews.eu/all-over-us-polling-places-freeze-when-faced-with-the-unexpected-voters/ https://briefnews.eu/all-over-us-polling-places-freeze-when-faced-with-the-unexpected-voters/#respond Tue, 06 Nov 2018 23:47:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/all-over-us-polling-places-freeze-when-faced-with-the-unexpected-voters/

American midterm elections are normally sleepy affairs, but 2018’s hyper-partisan atmosphere has voters turning out in record numbers. Polling places were unprepared for the onslaught and machines broke down all over the country.

In New York City, broken and jammed machines thwarted thousands of voters from Brooklyn to the Upper East Side and the Bronx, leaving voters lined up waiting in the rain – where they made matters worse by getting the ballots wet, according to Board of Elections rep Michael Ryan. Poll watchers were shocked at the dysfunction and NYC Council Speaker Corey Johnson demanded Ryan’s resignation, calling the mess “unacceptable and unfair to voters.”

This is not the first election New York has flubbed. Thousands of names went missing from voter rolls during the 2016 primaries, a phenomenon which was repeated to a lesser extent during this year’s primaries.

North Carolina voters had their own issues, with machines failing to read the new, larger ballots. Wake County Board of Elections Director Gary Sims blamed the humidity and instructed frustrated voters to place their ballots in “emergency bins,” where they would be counted later.

The lines were just as long in Georgia, where voters in downtown Atlanta had to wait for hours to cast their ballots after the county delivered just three voting machines. Civil rights leader Jesse Jackson actually visited the precinct in an effort to keep people’s spirits up and encourage them not to leave.

Some voters in New Jersey showed up at the polls only to be turned away because of a new law regarding mail-in ballots. Residents who had previously voted by mail were told they had to opt out before they could return to voting in person.

In South Carolina, voters claimed machines were flipping their votes to parties they did not want to select, sometimes more than once. Richland County Elections Director Rokey Suleman blamed a “calibration issue.” Other officials said the vote-flipping was only the start of their problems – some machines wouldn’t even plug in.

Texas voters had a similar experience last week. Voting machines reverted to Republican Ted Cruz when people attempted to vote for Democrat Beto O’Rourke, or to no candidate at all when they tried to vote for Cruz. Around the same time, the Georgia NAACP claimed they were experiencing similar issues with their gubernatorial candidates.

‘Load of s**t’ Fans rage at Remainer Natascha McElhone 'RECRUITING' Brexit voters on cusp https://briefnews.eu/load-of-st-fans-rage-at-remainer-natascha-mcelhone-recruiting-brexit-voters-on-cusp/ https://briefnews.eu/load-of-st-fans-rage-at-remainer-natascha-mcelhone-recruiting-brexit-voters-on-cusp/#respond Fri, 26 Oct 2018 16:41:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/load-of-st-fans-rage-at-remainer-natascha-mcelhone-recruiting-brexit-voters-on-cusp/

British actress and political activist Natascha is well-known for her popularity in US film and television, and now the star is returning home for a foray into space drama The First, which premieres on Channel 4 Thursday, November 1.

Appearing on ITV programme This Morning, the actress shared details on the exciting new project, which also stars Hollywood high-flyer Sean Penn.

But Natascha was keen to share the other important aspect of her career right now, which is helping the People’s Vote campaign continue to grow.

Speaking to guest presenters Rylan Clark-Neal and Amanda Holden about the London march which she attended, Natascha shared: “We felt quite victorious, it was great and it started the debate.”

“It was electrifying,” she said in reference to the sheer numbers that showed up for the demonstration. “700,000 and I think they [only] predicted 100,000.”

“I started the debate and people feel very passionately either way even if they voted leave,” Natascha continued. “People who have now changed their minds – we’ve now started to recruit people who feel that maybe they were lied to.”

The star went on to say she’s getting “excited” about the figures, and she’s even gotten her son involved in the campaign.

Taking to Twitter, fans shared their anger over the segment, and in particular the idea of “recruiting” British people who voted to leave the European Union.

One person blasted: “Interesting to hear her use the word ‘recruit’ when talking about getting people on the Brexit march.

“What do these thick people not understand? It’s not about being lied to, it’s about controlling immigration and making our own laws. Simple #ThisMorning.”

“It was going ok til she came out as a remoaner, boring! #thismorning,” another shared.

A third fumed: “#thismorning Stop letting stupid people keep going on about staying in the f*****g EU people’s vote what a load of s**t. The people had their vote, accept it you morons and wind your necks in.

“The only way the ‘people’s vote’ march would have had an impact,” a fourth began, “is if it was in Yorkshire, or Newcastle or somewhere.

“It just looked like a lot of posh Londoners kicking off. Eventually they’ll have to leave London. #ThisMorning #itvThisMorning.”

Not everyone felt the same, as one person responded: “Calm your tits, pal. People are entitled to an opinion, even if you don’t like it. #ThisMorning.”

“Can’t wait to see #TheFirst it looks bloody brilliant #ThisMorning,” another excited fan praised.

While a third joked: “Natascha McElhone looks exactly the same as she did in The Truman Show.

“HOW??!! It was over 20 years ago! #ThisMorning.”

This Morning airs weekdays at 10.30am on ITV.

22 regional Russian leaders including Moscow mayor to be chosen by voters on single election day https://briefnews.eu/22-regional-russian-leaders-including-moscow-mayor-to-be-chosen-by-voters-on-single-election-day/ https://briefnews.eu/22-regional-russian-leaders-including-moscow-mayor-to-be-chosen-by-voters-on-single-election-day/#respond Sat, 08 Sep 2018 22:54:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/22-regional-russian-leaders-including-moscow-mayor-to-be-chosen-by-voters-on-single-election-day/

Russian citizens go to the polls on Sunday to elect the heads of 22 regions, including the mayor of the capital, Moscow. They will also elect lawmakers in 16 regional legislatures and thousands of municipal councils.

The Moscow mayoral elections are probably the most important event of election day, with five candidates running for the post, including incumbent Mayor Sergey Sobyanin. The other candidates in the race are billionaire real estate developer Mikhail Balakin; lower house MP representing the populist-nationalist Liberal-Democratic Party of Russia, Mikhail Degtyarev; Communist Party candidate Vadim Kunin; and Ilya Sviridov, who represents the center-left party Fair Russia.

Four Russian regional capitals – Yakutsk, Abakan, Khabarovsk and Tomsk – will also hold mayoral polls on the national elections day.

Seven constituencies across the country will also hold by-elections to fill vacant seats in the State Duma, and voters will elect members to 16 regional legislatures and around 6,000 municipal councils.

Earlier this week, the Russian Central Election Commission opened a special information center to cover the events taking place on the single elections day. One of the commission members, Aleksandr Klyukin, has said that 893 journalists from 33 mass media outlets had received accreditation for the center, including 17 reporters from four foreign-based media organizations.

  • Around 2.6 million voters have switched their support from leaving the EU to remaining, major new polling shows.
  • Around a million voters have switched their support in the other direction, meaning a net total of 1.6 million more voters now support remaining in the EU compared to 2016.
  • Campaigners say it adds pressure on the government to arrange a new Brexit referendum.

LONDON — More than 2.6 million voters have abandoned their previous support for Brexit and now support remaining in the EU, according to new polling.

When offset by the 970,000 people that have switched their support from Remain to Leave, that would mean a net total of 1.6 million more voters now support remaining in the EU compared to the 2016 vote.

Meet the Millennial Georgian Inspiring Asian-American Voters https://briefnews.eu/meet-the-millennial-georgian-inspiring-asian-american-voters/ https://briefnews.eu/meet-the-millennial-georgian-inspiring-asian-american-voters/#respond Fri, 24 Aug 2018 13:12:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/meet-the-millennial-georgian-inspiring-asian-american-voters/

Sam Park picks at his lunch at El Torero, a Mexican restaurant in Duluth, a northeastern suburb of Atlanta. It’s a somewhat ironic choice, given that the 32-year-old politician could have picked from dozens of nearby places to emphasize his Korean heritage in a neighborhood where Eastern churches and Asian grocery stores abound.

This is home, though. And so the fact that Park knows his tacos as well as his Korean BBQ is kind of the point. Increasingly, the area will be known less as the “Seoul of the South,” than simply the modern iteration of “the South.” Gwinnett County, one of the most diverse in the nation, is noteworthy for more than its culinary fusion. The county was 90 percent white in 1990, but by 2040, according to the Atlanta Regional Commission, Gwinnett will be 37 percent Latino, 29 percent white, 20 percent Black, and 14 percent Asian and others. “It really is a diverse cross-section that seems to be moving toward some sort of equilibrium,” Park says. ”Which I think is fascinating from a nerdy point of view.”

Sam is smart; he is thoughtful; he is relentless. And I think he is demonstrative of what we can do when we cultivate young leaders and give them platforms.

Stacey Abrams, former Georgia House Minority Leader

Georgia’s only male Asian-American lawmaker and the first openly gay man elected to its state House could well be one of the faces of that demographic shift led by historic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams — who is seeking to become the nation’s first Black woman elected governor. Georgia Democrats are betting less white means more blue. Park readily admits the change isn’t “inevitable,” and his own story is instructive on this point. He upset a three-term Republican incumbent in 2016, but it was one of few bright spots for Democrats that night as the GOP continues to dominate the state. His proposals to boost voter registration, increase patient access to medical cannabis and expand access to public services for non-English speakers ran into roadblocks in the Republican-dominated House. Park also worked on the much-hyped campaign of Democrat Jon Ossoff, who fell short in the most expensive congressional election in history.

But Park is playing the long game. As Ossoff’s deputy political director, he was in charge of converting Asian-American, Muslim and LGBT voters — many of whom remain engaged in this year’s midterm elections. His efforts drew national notice. “Koreans who may never have donated or door-knocked or registered to vote, they were seeing and hearing from him, and were probably even engaged for the first time,” says Christine Chen, executive director of Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote. That momentum has translated to first-time candidates like Ethan Pham and David Kim running for Congress in a Gwinnett-based district (Pham lost in the May primary; Kim advanced to the Democratic runoff on July 24). “Sam is smart; he is thoughtful; he is relentless,” says Abrams, the former state House minority leader who has led Democratic efforts to turn out minorities. “And I think he is demonstrative of what we can do when we cultivate young leaders and give them platforms.”

But Democrats have been claiming Georgia will run blue for a few cycles now to no avail. While demographics might shift, “you still have to be a candidate who resonates with an overwhelming amount of voters,” Republican strategist Ryan Mahoney says. As for Park? “I think Sam is too young in this whole game. … When you don’t have majorities under the Gold Dome, you have to make a decision: You can be loud and build your name ID, or you can get something done.”

Dressed casually over lunch, Park appears even younger than his promo photos and social media image. The slick suit and side-fade suggest calm, cool, collected lawyer. In person, Park is more thirty-something still trying to find his place in this political age. His short time as a candidate hasn’t given him the polished air of practiced politicians, but it has allowed him to retain an authentic persona — and a sense of awe. “My grandparents were refugees from the Korean War,” he says. “I don’t come from a political background, and yet here I am, a state rep. That can only happen in a country like America.”

His parents raised him Christian and Republican, like many Asian-Americans who settled in the South during the ’90s. They were entrepreneurs, owning a small check-cashing store for a decade before shifting to a cell phone outlet. In 2014, Park’s mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Although she passed away earlier this year, she initially was able to get treatment partly because she was covered under the Affordable Care Act, and was a recent convert to the Democratic Party. Preserving the health care law was part of Park’s decision to run for office. “It’s the benefits that we receive that makes my love for my country even stronger,” he says.

The decision wasn’t easy. Abrams remembers sitting down with Park, a former intern of hers, when he was debating whether to run. “He was concerned about running as an out gay man, because his mother and community understood it but it wasn’t talked about,” she says. The two had an honest conversation about the interconnectedness of race, sexuality and religion in the Korean community. “The bravest thing he told me is that he was willing to risk these things to win this election.” He understood, in other words, that “if he didn’t say who he was, he wouldn’t be running an honest campaign for himself.”

Park is now focused on making tangible gains in the legislature on civil rights, redistricting reform and expanding Medicaid. In the long run, he hopes a progressive, pro-worker platform can expand Democrats’ appeal no matter voters’ color — or preferred cuisine.

Correction: Sam Park was mistakenly listed as Georgia’s only Asian-American lawmaker. He is actually one of two, the other being Rep. Bee Nguyen of Atlanta, who was elected in 2017. We regret the error.

  • Labour will lose a big chunk of support if it doesn’t oppose Brexit.
  • If there was an election before Brexit, just 19% of people would vote for Labour if it doesn’t oppose Britain’s EU exit, while the Conservatives would be 9 percentage points ahead, a YouGov poll has found.
  • Support for the anti-Brexit Lib Dems would jump to 17%.
  • However, Labour would be much closer to the Tories and way ahead of the Lib Dems if it opposed Brexit.
  • Jeremy Corbyn is under increasing pressure from Labour members to stand against Brexit.

LONDON — The Labour Party will haemorrhage voters to the Liberal Democrats if it doesn’t oppose Brexit, a poll has found, in the latest sign that Jeremy Corbyn’s party relies heavily on support from passionate pro-Europeans.

Help from above? Chicago mayoral candidate hands out stacks of cash to voters https://briefnews.eu/help-from-above-chicago-mayoral-candidate-hands-out-stacks-of-cash-to-voters/ https://briefnews.eu/help-from-above-chicago-mayoral-candidate-hands-out-stacks-of-cash-to-voters/#respond Mon, 23 Jul 2018 19:16:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/help-from-above-chicago-mayoral-candidate-hands-out-stacks-of-cash-to-voters/

Willie Wilson, a millionaire Democrat businessman running for mayor of Chicago, handed out hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash to potential voters in a church on Sunday, allegedly to “help them pay property taxes.”

Speaking in a black church at an event on Chicago’s crime and poverty-stricken south side, Wilson passed out notes from a thick stack of cash, telling the congregation that, “My wife and I have been blessed by God…so it’s up to us to now continually to share back with all of you.”

According to aides, Wilson handed out $ 300,000 to some 2,000 people, local news station WGN reported.

Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner (R) also spoke at the event, promising criminal justice reform and addressing the issue of Chicago’s property taxes, which are among the highest in the US. He did not, however, directly hand cash to voters.

Wilson was criticized from all sides for what looked like a blatant attempt to buy votes. After it emerged that Rauner had donated $ 100,000 to Wilson’s charitable foundation – indirectly funding the handouts – the governor said that he disapproved of the stunt and will demand that any of his money that was used be returned.

Republican State Rep. David McSweeney blasted Wilson on Twitter, calling the event “a national joke” and “so wrong.”

Meanwhile, Democrat State Rep. Emanuel Chris Welch described the event as Rauner using Wilson to buy votes ahead of his reelection bid this November.

“What the hell?” Welch tweeted. “Is Bruce Rauner using Willie Wilson and Corey Brooks to buy votes??? Handing out cash in the Black Church. Smh! How about creating jobs dudes!”

Wilson’s team insist that the Sunday bonanza was legal, as his appearance was not technically a campaign event. “While he happens to be a candidate, he’s been a philanthropist for 30 years,” a spokesman told WGN, with Wilson himself adding: “We’ve been paying people’s property taxes for years.”

The Illinois State Board of Elections declared everything above board too, on account of the fact that the money came from Wilson’s charitable foundation, instead of his campaign funds.

“As far as we can see, it looks like he didn’t use campaign funds for this,” Board spokesman Matt Dietrich told the Chicago Tribune. “And there doesn’t appear to have been any quid pro quo, like, ‘Here’s some money, vote for me.’ So from our perspective, it doesn’t look like there was anything illegal about this.”

Nevertheless, Wilson’s antics are raising eyebrows on Twitter.

Wilson is challenging Chicago’s two-term incumbent mayor, Rahm Emanuel, who has held office since 2011. Chicagoans will go to the polls in February 2019.
