Rep. Liz Cheney gives a concession speech to supporters during a primary night event in Jackson, Wyo., on August 16, 2022.

  • Liz Cheney said she would not support Wyoming GOP House nominee Harriet Hageman in the November general election.
  • Hageman, who was backed by Trump and a plethora of national Republicans, defeated Cheney 66%-29%.
  • Cheney during her interview reaffirmed that her fight against election deniers was not over.

Rep. Liz Cheney on Saturday said that she would not vote for Harriet Hageman, the water rights attorney who is the new Republican nominee for Wyoming's at-large congressional district.

Hageman, who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump and a plethora of House Republicans, defeated Cheney in the August GOP primary 66%-29%.

During a conversation at The Texas Tribune Festival, Cheney said that Hageman continued to spread debunked theories about the 2020 presidential election and in her opinion should not serve in public office.

"Harriet is a member of the Wyoming State Bar and she's sworn an oath to the Constitution as a member of the Wyoming State Bar," Cheney told the media organization's chief executive Evan Smith. "And she continues to make the assertion that somehow the 2020 election was stolen and has said many of the same things that have resulted in people like Rudy Giuliani having their license suspended and I know that she knows better."

"There are many people around this country who are making claims they know not to be true, and I don't think anybody should vote for any of them," she added.

Cheney also pointed out Kari Lake, the Republican gubernatorial nominee in Arizona, as a candidate who has continued to question the results of the 2020 election.

Lake is currently locked in a tight contest with Democratic Secretary of State Katie Hobbs.

The congresswoman said that she would work to ensure sure that candidates like Lake are unsuccessful at the ballot box, even if it means campaigning with Democrats.

"In this election, you have to vote for the person who actually believes in democracy," she said. "And that is just crucial, because if we elect election deniers, if we elect people who said that they're not going to certify results or who are going to try to steal elections, then we really are putting the Republic at risk."

Lake during an appearance on the Fox News program "Sunday Morning Futures" responded to Cheney's remarks, stating that the Wyoming lawmaker's comments were a "gift."

"That might be the biggest, best gift I have ever received," Lake told host Maria Bartiromo.

"Liz Cheney probably should change her voter registration. Turns out she really is a Democrat after all," she added.

The second half of American Idol‘s Top 24 sang for viewers’ votes on Monday, taking the stage opposite some true music icons, from Jewel and Josh Groban to Incubus frontman Brandon Boyd. (Guys, remember Incubus?!)

Read on for our breakdown of the night’s performances, with video for each:

JASON WARRIOR, 25 | The first solo performance of the night, The Weeknd’s “Call Out My Name,” may have started out smooth and chill, but things took a very sudden, very emotional turn. By the end of Warrior’s performance, he was on his knees, seemingly in tears. When he met with duet partner PJ Morton, he asked how he can take his music outside the walls of the church. The solution, apparently, was to bring the church to Idol, resulting in a truly unexpected take on the Bee Gees’ “How Deep Is Your Love.” There’s no denying Warrior’s natural talent (Lionel Richie even said, “It does not get any better than that”), but sometimes I wonder if Warrior needs to lay it on so thick with every performance. A little variation never hurt anybody. Click here to watch.

MADISON WATKINS, 26 | First of all, Watkins managed to change my (previously negative) opinion about Justin Bieber’s “Holy,” which is a feat in and of itself. It was a good choice for her solo, as it felt current and showed off quite a bit of her range. Tori Kelly was also an inspired choice as Watkins’ duet partner for Stevie Wonder’s “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing,” even if she suffers from Ryan Tedder syndrome. (We already know Kelly can sing. She didn’t need to totally outshine her partner with those runs.) Luke Bryan called her a “natural entertainer,” while Richie commended her for reacting to what Kelly was doing, instead of focusing on her own prepared part. Click here to watch.

BEANE, 23 | I feel like we’re really witnessing an artistic evolution with Beane, even if his borderline cheesy performance of Dua Lipa’s “Don’t Start Now” reminded me that, oh yeah, he’s definitely a wedding singer. Robbie Williams’ “Angels,” which he then sang alongside Groban, was a much better fit. He opened his mouth and loveliness poured out, complementing Groban’s voice perfectly. (I was not expecting him to be able to hold his own opposite Groban, but he totally did.) Extra points to Beane for swapping “she” with “he” as an act of “defiance.” Watch:

HANNAH EVERHART, 17 | I genuinely enjoy this young star on the rise, so it pains me to say that her solo performance of Chris Stapleton’s “I Was Wrong” was… not her best. She was then introduced to Jason Aldean, with whom she shared some ribs before sharing the stage. The judges enjoyed what she put forward, for the most part, but they urged her to believe in herself more. Frankly, I’m just disappointed that we never found out about the chicken she was supposed to send Claudia Conway via FedEx “dead or alive.” Which one was it, Everhart?! Click here to watch.

MARY JO YOUNG, 19 | Real talk: I’m so sick of hearing Ed Sheeran’s “Castle on the Hill,” so I appreciated that Young at least switched things up a bit in order to show off her range. And don’t even get me started on her duet with Jewel. I was already excited for “Foolish Games,” and that was before my ears were blessed enough to hear their voices on it together. The tight harmonies, the growling, the hat — all of it! I’m pretty sure I blacked out during this performance, and when I came to, I saw that I had just written “Yes! Yes! YES!” over and over. It was that good. Watch:

CHAYCE BECKHAM, 24 | Oh, another Sheeran song? You. Don’t. Say. Beckham picked “Afterglow” for his solo performance this week, and while it wasn’t incredible, it was definitely solid. As Bryan noted, it kind of felt like Bruce Springsteen’s take on the song. I’m not sure I would have paired him with Boyd for his duet, as their polar-opposite voices struggled in the blending department, but it was still a good performance. And I’ll take any excuse to revisit “Drive.” Click here to watch.

COLIN JAMIESON, 22 | It’s easy to forget how high most Bruno Mars songs are, since he makes them sound so effortless, but those notes aren’t easy. Yet Jamieson managed to absolutely slay “Locked Out of Heaven” without breaking a sweat. (That said, I kind of wish he hadn’t bothered to pick up the guitar midway through, as it only took away from his incredible vocals.) Then came his duet with Kelly, who apparently only teams up with other heads of luscious hair. And while their collective hair game was definitely strong, their vocals on “Hollow” were even stronger. This was one of the best duets of the night for me. Watch:

LIAHONA OLAYAN, 17 | I’ve felt that this firecracker has been radio-ready and highly marketable from Day 1, and her solo performance of Audrey Mixa’s “Just Friends” only served to reinforce that belief. Joining Morton for a dramatic duet of “Say So” was a risky move for Olayan, who admitted to having a fear of showing her vulnerability, but it was definitely worth it. She held her own on stage with Morton, and the judges were right to celebrate how far she’s come. Click here to watch.

AVA AUGUST, 15 | The irony of August performing Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License” as her solo, when she herself isn’t even old enough to operate a car on her own, is not lost on me. And neither is August’s incredible voice, which holds a beautiful quality well beyond her years. Come on, if you can give Groban chills, you know you’ve got it. Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” was an inspired choice for a duet, and the end result was absolutely stunning, like it was meant for her to sing. The judges likened her to Judy Garland, which I hadn’t considered. I have, however, considered how stupid I was for not including August in our (extremely) early Top 10 predictions list. I’m really kicking myself for that one. Watch:

CALEB KENNEDY, 16 | Remember how tough Bryan was on Alex Miller earlier this season, constantly trying to steer him away from old-school country in the hopes of discovering a fresher sound? That’s kind of how I feel about Kennedy, who delivered a good — but not terribly exciting — cover of The Allman Brothers Band’s “Midnight Rider.” His duet, “Fly Over States” opposite Jason Aldean, was also kind of a snooze-fest. The judges clearly disagree with me, as they praised Kennedy for being “possessed by a very old, seasoned countryman.” Is that really a good thing for this competition? Click here to watch.

HUNTER METTS, 22 | When I first saw that Metts was taking on Sia’s “Chandelier,” my head cocked to the side like a tiny dog trying to understand human-speak. But once he began his stripped-down take on the ubiquitous jam, I started to get into it. I did find it a bit sleepy, though, and I noticed that not a single judge stood up for it. Metts got a second shot, duetting with Jewel (who immediately drew the Ryan Phillippe comparison) on the singer’s timeless classic “Foolish Games.” She challenged hm to deliver a big vocal moment, but it never quite manifested, resulting in a performance that really only showcased Jewel’s voice — which sounds better than ever, by the way. I actually thought the judges were too nice about this one. Where’s Simon Cowell when you need him? Click here to watch.

CASEY BISHOP, 15 | Best solo of the night? Best solo of both nights? Either way, Bishop sang the hell out of Paramore’s “Decode,” and the producers knew exactly what they were doing when they chose to end the night with her. I wish she had been paired with Jewel for her duet, but Boyd wasn’t a bad choice — nor was “Wish You Were Here,” a song I haven’t thought about in at least a decade. This girl is Top 5 material, no question. Watch:

The Crown‘s Princess Diana and Margaret Thatcher both find themselves betrayed by those closest to them as the Netflix royal drama wraps up Season 4 — are their reigns over already?

The finale begins with Thatcher’s conservative allies openly revolting against her in Parliament, with Sir Geoffrey Howe resigning and condemning her “finger-wagging” on the way out. She meets with Elizabeth and only wants to talk about the brewing crisis in the Gulf, but Elizabeth brings up Howe’s resignation and asks if she expects a leadership challenge. Thatcher dismisses it as just “petty rivalries and resentments,” but she narrowly survives a vote, and when she confronts her fellow conservatives, they all claim to support her… but they warn her that the numbers are against her (“Perhaps if your methods were less confrontational…”) and advise her to step down before she’s forced out.

Diana, meanwhile, is feeling a similar squeeze: Charles knows she’s been sleeping with her riding instructor James Hewitt again and wants to move forward with a separation. The unhappy couple takes an awkward trip to William’s school to watch him play rugby, and Charles makes it very clear he doesn’t want Diana taking a trip to New York she’s been planning. (They glare at each other across a long table while their many advisors argue it out.) “I’m in hell!” Diana complains, but she does manage to escape to New York, where she’s greeted by adoring fans everywhere she goes. (She’s still making herself throw up, though.)

The Crown Season 4 Finale Margaret ThatcherFaced with imminent expulsion, Thatcher reaches deep into her bag of tricks for a last resort: She informs the Queen she intends to dissolve Parliament (!) and wants her support. Elizabeth reminds her that just because she can do something doesn’t mean that she should, necessarily: “Perhaps the time has come for you to try doing nothing for once.” Thatcher won’t do that, though; the job of Prime Minister is her one true passion, and she can’t stand to see that taken away from her. But she does eventually say goodbye to 10 Downing Street, and the press cameras catch her face crumbling as she drives away. In their final meeting, Elizabeth offers her sincere sympathies… and awards her the prestigious Order of Merit as a token of her admiration. After she pins it on her chest, Thatcher takes a solemn knee before her queen.

While in New York, Diana sets off a media frenzy when she visits a Harlem hospital and hugs a child with AIDS, with the locals raving about her on TV. Camilla sees all of this and tells Charles he can’t break it off with Diana; it’ll turn into a popularity contest, she knows, and “I will lose.” A furious Charles takes out his frustrations on Diana when she returns, referring to her New York trip as “calculated vulgarity.” They end up screaming at each other, with Charles blaming her for Camilla’s wounded feelings: “If you hurt her, you hurt me.” It’s clear who the most important woman is in Charles’ life… and it’s not Diana. Later, she sits down beside the toilet — but this time, she doesn’t throw up.

The Crown Season 4 Finale Ellizabeth PhilipIt’s Christmas time at Balmoral, and Elizabeth and Philip welcome their family, including an uncomfortable Diana. When she tries to pull Elizabeth aside for a heart-to-heart, the Queen sidesteps her to feed her corgis, but she’s soon cornered by her son Charles. He insists he’s done his best to salvage this marriage, and now he’s just suffering. Elizabeth unloads on him, scolding him for whining, calling him and Diana both “spoiled” and “immature,” and forbidding him from even thinking about divorce or separation. A chat between Diana and Philip doesn’t go much better; she now sees the family as “a cold, frozen tundra,” and he cautions her that if she tries to leave, “it won’t end well for you.” Besides, he says, everyone in this family is lost and lonely… except for the Queen. The season ends with the whole family gathering together for a festive holiday group photo. Diana can’t manage to put on a smile, though.

Alright, The Crown fans: Give the finale — and Season 4 as a whole — a grade in our polls, and then hit the comments to share your thoughts.

Joe Biden Makes Primetime Speech as Vote Count Continues — Watch Live https://briefnews.eu/joe-biden-makes-primetime-speech-as-vote-count-continues-watch-live/ https://briefnews.eu/joe-biden-makes-primetime-speech-as-vote-count-continues-watch-live/#respond Sat, 07 Nov 2020 05:05:36 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/joe-biden-makes-primetime-speech-as-vote-count-continues-watch-live/

Former Vice President Joe Biden on Friday night made a primetime speech as he approaches an apparent victory in the 2020 presidential election against incumbent Donald Trump. He and running mate Sen. Kamala Harris appeared before the nation from Wilmington, Delaware; you can watch a live stream of the event above, via Bloomberg QuickTake: Now.

“We do not have a final declaration of victory yet,” Biden noted in his opening. “But the numbers… tell us a clear and convincing story. We are going to win this race… with a clear majority and the nation behind us.”

Again, Biden at the time he spoke — and despite another boost in his Pennsylvania total — still had not officially cleared the threshold of 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency, but the ongoing vote counts in several states seem to be in his favor. Early on Friday morning, Biden took the lead in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which would be the decisive win for him with its 20 electoral votes. At press time, Biden has 253 electoral votes, with Trump trailing with 214 electoral votes, and several states — including Arizona, Georgia and North Carolina — still too close to call.

If Biden is elected, Harris would become the first female vice president of the United States, and also the first person of color elected to the vice presidency.

One hallmark of the 2020 presidential election, of course, was the record number of mail-in ballots, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and concerns about/state limitations with in-person voting. With each state in control of its tabulation timetable for mail-in ballots, Trump, for one, used his rallies and other appearances to cast aspersions on the validity of those results. He continued to make unfounded claims of voter fraud and illegally cast ballots in a televised statement on Thursday, which frustrated, among others, several cable news hosts.

Press PLAY on the live stream above to watch Biden’s full speech.

Does Batwoman Recast Mean Kate Herself Must Get a New Face? Vote! https://briefnews.eu/does-batwoman-recast-mean-kate-herself-must-get-a-new-face-vote/ https://briefnews.eu/does-batwoman-recast-mean-kate-herself-must-get-a-new-face-vote/#respond Tue, 26 May 2020 03:07:08 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/does-batwoman-recast-mean-kate-herself-must-get-a-new-face-vote/ The star of Batwoman will have a new face when Season 2 rolls around. But will Kate Kane herself? Is there any way — or any reason — for the Arrowverse series to write in the change of appearance?

Let me state up front, before we blow past the 280-character attention span, that I am NOT an advocate for writing it into a show when a role gets recast. Ignore it, I say, or make a wink-wink nod to it via some second banana’s throwaway line. (“You seem… different … today, Laramie.”) I spent a whole day last week compiling/researching dozens of past TV recasts, and it is rarely written into the story.

Also, the first couple of times I asked myself if Batwoman would/could/should account on-screen for the replacement of series lead Ruby Rose (already removed from The CW’s fall schedule graphic above, ouch) with whomever, what I came up with never held water. Mostly because no matter what disfiguring accident you throw at Kate in the Season 2 premiere, it would just seem odd that she gets a new face just as frenemy Tommy Elliot did.

But then… but then I kept coming back to something Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries said in our post mortem Q&A, five days before the Ruby Rose news went wide.

I had asked Dries — as I did with her Flash counterpart, Eric Wallace — if the scripts for this past season that could not be filmed before the coronavirus shutdown would be left untouched over the long hiatus. And whereas Wallace just barely admitted there “might be a wee bit of tinkering” (if only to eliminate crowd scenes that would be problematic to film post-pandemic), Dries seemed more open to changes.

“When you are a writer and you have time on your hands, you start tinkering and tinkering,” she quickly answered. “The one thing writers don’t ever have is time, so when they get it, they think about making changes.”

Was she perhaps already looking ahead, to writing in the recast? I truly and absolutely do not know, and Dries upon reading this may very well dismiss any such theory on Twitter. But still, it nudged me to think a bit harder about how Batwoman could give Kate Kane a new face, without it seeming ridic.

So… what if… Season 2 opens with a street chase, shot wide at night and using a stand-in in the Batwoman costume. And the Scarlet Knight, like, skids her motorcycle into, I dunno, a farmer’s combine that happens to be motoring through the city. Kate just barely survives, but man, that face will need some work.

The problem we run into here is that, Arrowverse “shmience” or not, real-life plastic surgery requires time to heal. And while it’d be a shame to make Alice hurry up and wait with the Tommy Elliot/”Bruce Wayne” scheme she just revealed to us, perhaps this makes the return of Kate’s long-missing cousin a bit less random. Maybe Bruce shows up at Kate’s bedside, saying, “When I heard about how you nearly lost your life upholding my legacy, I couldn’t stay away any longer.” Because if he had a meaningful reason to end his absence from Gotham, Kate and Luke might be a little less leary of hijinks. It’d help sell Alice’s elaborate ruse.

Hey, maybe Alice and Tommy had even orchestrated Kate’s skid into that combine? To give “Bruce” a reason to return home?

(At this point with quarantine brain, I started thinking too, too much. What if Kate post-surgery pretends to leave town, now that her cousin Bruce is back in charge? And then when Commander Kane finally captures Batwoman and peels her cowl off, he doesn’t recognize that it’s his daughter?! Holy Bat-Irony! And then I took a Tylenol PM.)

Again, to be clear, I am 100-percent OK with Batwoman not addressing the recast on-screen! We are all grown-ups and such real-life matters can be ignored, just as when One Life to Live‘s previously recast Max Holden suddenly looked like Jimmy DePaiva again.

But what about you, the Bat-viewer? Would it be kosher with you if there is near-zero reference to a new actress playing Kate, when Batwoman opens Season 2 in the year 2021? Or are you one of those people who “needs” such things written into a show?

Joe Exotic Casting Call: Which Actor’s Got the Eye of the Tiger (King)? Vote! https://briefnews.eu/joe-exotic-casting-call-which-actors-got-the-eye-of-the-tiger-king-vote/ https://briefnews.eu/joe-exotic-casting-call-which-actors-got-the-eye-of-the-tiger-king-vote/#respond Mon, 30 Mar 2020 22:10:43 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/joe-exotic-casting-call-which-actors-got-the-eye-of-the-tiger-king-vote/

The runaway success of Netflix’s Tiger King has injected new life into a potential scripted version of the sordid tale, igniting a feeding frenzy around the casting of the titular ringmaster.

At least a half-dozen actors and self-proclaimed Tiger King enthusiasts, including Dax Shepard and Edward Norton, have campaigned for the colorful role. “If I don’t get cast as Joe Exotic in the eventual biopic, Hollywood is broken,” Shepard cracked on Twitter last week, prompting this tongue-in-cheek response from Norton: “Um, step aside, pal. You’re way too young and buff and you know it.”

The pair’s cat-and-mouse game triggered a larger, more serious debate across social media about who would be the purr-fect choice to portray the gun-toting polygamist opposite Kate McKinnon’s Carole Baskin in the potential limited series, which is in active development at Universal Content Productions. Among the other names tossed into the meow mix: Steve Buscemi, Danny McBride, Thomas Lennon and Billy Bob Thornton.

And that barely scratches the surface.

After scanning the Interwebs for other popular suggestions, and folding in a few ideas of out own, we narrowed the field down to the 13 paws-ible contenders in the poll below. Which actor do you believe would be the definitive Joe Exotic?

Now, before you vote, a couple FYIs: The poll closes at tomorrow, March 31, at 6 pm ET. And the results will be kept under wraps until they are revealed on TVLine later this week.

Who is Octopus?

Octopus has been confusing judges over whether their accent is really American or not, which has meant there have been some rogue guesses.

Now the character has been teasing how they might actually be an opera singer with some impressive vocals.

This means the overall favourite at the moment is Katherine Jenkins at 11/10, according to Ladbrokes.

Then Ashley Roberts is at 3/1, Sheree Murphy is at 3/1, Holly Vallance is at 4/1 and Dannii Minogue is at 5/1.

The Masked Singer final airs this Saturday on ITV.

The Masked Singer POLL: Who is The Monster? Who is Octopus? The Masked Singer has had viewers hooked as they guess exactly who the celebrities are behind the full-body costumes in the show. There have been plenty of outlandish guesses so far in the series but viewers are still mixed on who they could actually be.

Tonight’s (Saturday, February 1) episode of The Masked Singer will see the remaining seven contestants on the hit singing competition perform.

This will all come ahead of a dramatic double unmasking on the popular ITV series, which will see two more celebrities sent home.

So far in the series, there have been some pretty dramatic reveals, including how US singer Kelis was the Daisy, EastEnders actor Patsy Palmer was the Butterfly and The Darkness lead vocalist Justin Hawkins was the Chameleon.

Ahead of the latest performances, have your say in who exactly you think are behind the masks on the hit show in Express.co.uk’s exclusive poll below.

Who is Queen Bee?

Queen Bee has been stumping viewers with her performances ever since she first sung Alive by Sia.

The judges have put out a number of guesses, including everyone from Kylie Minogue to Emilia Clarke, as well as audiences at home placing their guesses.

Currently, according to Ladbrokes, the most likely candidate is Little Mix’s Jade Thirwell at 5/4 with Girls Aloud singer Nicola Roberts following closely behind at 2/1.

Other guesses are also all from girl bands with Nadine Coyle at 5/2, Leigh-Anne Pinnock at 3/1 and Sarah Harding at 6/1.

Who is Unicorn?

Fans of the show have fallen in love with Unicorn’s energetic performances, singing songs like Babooshka by Kate Bush, Juice by Lizzo and Sharp Dressed Man by ZZ Top.

Ladbrokes place John Barrowman at evens, Jake Shears at 2/1, Mika at 4/1, Kevin McHale at 9/2 and Adam Lambert at 16/1.

Who is Hedgehog?

Hedgehog has teased viewers with clues they are a stage actor who may have appeared in musicals like Phantom of the Opera and Hairspray so far in the competition.

This has led Ladbrokes to put Welsh singer Rhydian Roberts as the most likely candidate at 4/5.

Other potential stars are Alfie Boe (4/1), Michael Ball (5/1), Jason Manford (8/1) and Wes Nelson (10/1).

Who is Monster?

Monster left fans convinced they were American performer Cee Lo Green when they first came out with their performance of Happy by Pharrell Williams.

Ladbrokes place him at 1/3 with Andre 3000 at 2/1, LL Cool J at 5/1, Jamie Foxx at 100/1 and Elton John at 500/1.

Who is Duck?

Viewers were sure they had guessed who Duck was before they came out in their second performance with an operatic twang.

This has led viewers to speculate whether Duck could be Skunk Anansie singer Skin with her odds at 4/6.

Some fans are convinced this is true after the character previously revealed they could speak two foreign languages, which is something Skin tweeted about in the past.

Other potential celebrities behind the mask are Denise Lewis (4/1), Mel C (9/2), Claire Danes (8/1) and Kelly Holmes (10/1).

‘This is nonsense’ Furious row on Jeremy Vine ERUPTS over giving 16-year-olds vote https://briefnews.eu/this-is-nonsense-furious-row-on-jeremy-vine-erupts-over-giving-16-year-olds-vote/ https://briefnews.eu/this-is-nonsense-furious-row-on-jeremy-vine-erupts-over-giving-16-year-olds-vote/#respond Tue, 19 Nov 2019 12:57:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/this-is-nonsense-furious-row-on-jeremy-vine-erupts-over-giving-16-year-olds-vote/

Jeremy Vine panellists could not be farther apart on the issue of 16-year-olds being allowed to vote in general elections in the UK. Daily Express columnist Carole Malone, vehemently opposed to the proposal, clashed with Collabro star Jamie Lambert as he claimed 16-years should be taught politics in school and then allowed to vote in elections. He said: “I’ve said it for years on this show, for me is less about giving them a vote at 16 and more about giving them a vote at 16 and educating them.

“I’ve said it for years that we need to teach politics in schools.

“Everything I have learned about the way this country works and politics I’ve done by myself.”

Ms Malone replied: “Isn’t it funny that 16-year-olds are never the one manning the barricades to get their vote?

“They’re not. All the ones who want a vote for 16-year-olds tend to be older people and they also tend to be from the Labour Party because what happened to the Labour Party is they exploited the idealism.

“It’s absolutely true and it’s exactly why Labour want 16-year-olds to vote. “

She added: “I think if you’re 16 and you’re not left wing…

“Every 16-year-old is like this, most of them will vote Labour at 16, and if you don’t realise that…

“They are very binary in terms of morals.

“This is not being disrespectful to them, they’re just not grown up.”

Addressing Mr Lambert, she said: “This is nonsense. You’re saying they’re not taught about it but you still want them to vote.”

The Labour Party has pledged to give 16-year olds a vote in general elections if they top the polls in December with a governing majority.

And Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell claimed at conference, in September, that Labour would at least give 16-year-olds the chance to vote in a second Brexit referendum should they manage to implement their latest Brexit policy.

Jim McMahon, Labour and Co-operative Party candidate for Oldham West and Royton, who introduced the bill to Parliament for debate last year, said: “I think we demand a lot of our 16 and 17-year-olds and I think they have a right to have a say in our democracy.

“Democracy isn’t an exclusive club, it’s about franchising people and giving them the right to participate and affect change.

“I think now we’ve come away from established politics it means politicians have to wake up and realise our politics has to become far more inclusive and take into account a wide range of views when making decisions on people’s behalf.

“The time has come.

“If you believe in a truly United Kingdom, it’s important we have equity in our democracy too.”

Blackford squirms as he is confronted with harsh ‘reality’ of second independence vote https://briefnews.eu/blackford-squirms-as-he-is-confronted-with-harsh-reality-of-second-independence-vote/ https://briefnews.eu/blackford-squirms-as-he-is-confronted-with-harsh-reality-of-second-independence-vote/#respond Fri, 08 Nov 2019 09:43:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/blackford-squirms-as-he-is-confronted-with-harsh-reality-of-second-independence-vote/

Jeremy Corbyn has said a second Scottish independence referendum is “not necessary or desirable”. The Labour leader spoke out after SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon claimed he would agree to hold another vote on Scotland leaving the UK if he becomes Prime Minister. In response, Mr Corbyn said: “Labour does not support independence for Scotland and we do not think another independence referendum is either desirable or necessary.”

Speaking on the claims, BBC Breakfast host Charlie Stayt asked: “Let me ask you specifically about Jeremy Corbyn. So, what indications have you had?

“We’ve all heard his public statements which is that it’s a wait and see effectively, not ruling anything out in relation to offering a second referendum.

“Have you heard more than that? Are there talks going on that is offering more than that?

“Because clearly a Labour win, a Corbyn Government, is on the face of it the SNP’s best route to getting a second referendum.”

Ian Blackford began: “But nobody, whether it’s Jeremy Corbyn or Boris Johnson, can stand in the face of the votes of the Scottish people. They should respect the people of Scotland.”

The BBC presenter interjected: “Well technically they can, can’t they? That’s the reality, they can.”

The SNP Westminster Leader replied: “Well I would simply say that we won the election in 2016, we then won the election to Westminster in 2017, we won the European election.

“We have a triple mandate that we have for an independence referendum, and one thing you can’t do is to stand up in front of the people and say ‘your votes don’t matter’.

“That vote was respected but circumstances change and people have the right to change their mind. In a democracy, people always have the right to change their minds.

“In that referendum, we were told we had to reject independence to protect our place in the European Union and now we’re being taken out against our will. People, in a democracy, when circumstances change, have every right to consider and reconsider their decisions.”

In the 2016 Brexit referendum, Scotland voted 62 percent to Remain compared to 53.4 percent and 52.5 percent to leave in England and Wales respectively.

Polling expert Sir John Curtice suggested substantial gains in Scotland could be possible for Ms Sturgeon’s SNP at the upcoming general election.

Sir John said: “Somewhere around 45 to 50 seats for the SNP at the moment seems perfectly possible.”

Recent opinion polls have given the SNP around 40 percent of the Scottish vote an almost 20-point lead of the Tories and Scottish Labour Party.

This is in part due to the resignation of Ruth Davidson and the confusion over Scottish Labour’s Brexit policy.
