Following a prolific career in international men’s volleyball and just six years after completing her gender-reassignment surgery, Tifanny Abreu is hoping to become Brazil’s first transsexual MP. Under a campaign slogan of “Why not?” the 33-year old has faced criticism from the LGBT community in her home country for choosing to run for the center-right conservative MBD party of incumbent President Michel Temer. “I don’t give any importance to parties, but to people,” Abreu told the AFP. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Tifanny Abreu (@tifannyabreu10) on Abreu’s volleyball club is sponsored by industries linked to the conservative MBD party, the AFP reports. Following extensive hormone treatment and several surgeries in Europe in 2012, Abreu became the first transsexual to play in Brazil’s Superliga, the top-flight competition for women’s volleyball in the country, after a decade in men’s professional volleyball. “When they offered to bring me back to Brazil, many people advised me to stay in Europe because of discrimination, but thank God things are starting to change,” Abreu said. “I wanted to make my transition when I was 12 or 13-years old, because even from childhood, I knew I was a woman. But I lacked information, guidance and above all, hospitals where I could get the operation done.” Abreu’s return to competition was greeted by uproar from Superliga players who said it was unfair, including Brazil’s Olympic bronze medalist from the Atlanta 1996 games, Ana Paula Henkel. “It’s not a question of prejudice, but physiology,” Henkel, also a conservative, posted on Twitter, as cited by AFP. “Her body was built with testosterone all her life.” However, ahead of the Summer Olympic Games in Brazil in 2016, the International Olympic Committee rules were changed to allow trans athletes to compete in women’s competitions provided they controlled their testosterone levels. Abreu hopes to compete in the Tokyo Olympics. READ MORE: Gay sex decriminalized in India in historic Supreme Court verdict A total of 53 of the candidates running in the October 7 elections are transgender, the vast majority of whom represent left-leaning parties. Brazil struggles with gender discrimination and violence, with the highest rate of trans murders in the world last year, at 179. Like this story? Share it with a friend! Former Russian volleyball star Yekaterina Gamova has questioned the plaudits for the men’s national football team following their run to the World Cup quarter-final this summer. Gamova, who retired in 2016 as a double volleyball world champion and two-time Olympic silver medallist, criticized the decision to give members of the men’s football team the title of ‘Honored Masters of Sport’, which they received at the Ministry of Sport on Saturday. READ MORE: Putin awards prestigious ‘Order of Alexander Nevsky’ to World Cup coach Cherchesov The step comes amid widespread plaudits for the team – including from President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin on Saturday – which don’t sit well with Gamova over the apparent rewarding of what she feels are insufficient achievements. The 37-year-old, who now works as a youth team coach, posted an Instagram picture on Saturday with the news of the team’s award accompanied by a message questioning the decision. “Some people need to win the World Championship or become an Olympic champion [to receive the title], but some people get it for reaching the quarter-final!” she wrote, adding: “It’s a shame for me that [the title Honored Master of Sport] is being devalued!” Публикация от Ekaterina Gamova (@ekaterinagamova11) She clarified, however, that her complaint was aimed at the Russian sporting authorities over the decision, rather than the players themselves. The title Honored Master of Sport (sometimes translated as Merited Master of Sport) is given for outstanding sporting achievements and contributions. Gamova herself received the accolade after winning silver at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. She later told Sport Express that she felt the men’s football team weren’t being held to the same high standards as in other sports. “For me all sportsmen and women are equal, everyone has the same high level that they are aiming for,” she said. “Awarding footballers the title of ‘honored masters of sport’ looks strange, it means that they are putting people who reached the quarter-final on one level with the Olympic prize winners and world champions, in this respect the award is depreciated,” Gamova added. “To the players themselves, as I wrote, I don’t have any questions, only to the sport authorities.” She explained that her own experience had meant some players who were part of the women’s volleyball World Championship-winning squad weren’t given the award. “The level that the national football team showed is not worth [the title of masters of sport]. At the 2010 women’s Volleyball World Championship, which we won, not all the members of the team were give such a title, although it shouldn’t have been that way. “That was a decision by the Ministry of Sport, they explained to us that they didn’t give the award to those who weren’t in the main team. Is that really right? “If you give the award, then do it for everyone. It works out that from one side you have female volley world champions without the honor, and from the other, footballers who got to the World Cup quarter-final who receive the title.” When asked whether an exception should be made given the way the men’s football team had surpassed all expectations by reaching the quarter-finals at the World Cup, Gamova said that merely meant the team should aim higher. “It means that we need to aim to be more competitive at football. The national team received its share of recognition, it gave the country a great celebration with its performances at the World Cup, perhaps the guys will get a good bonus for the tournament, but why do we need to make an exception? “Apart from football there are other types of sport in which guys aim for the highest places, and no one from them who reaches the quarter-final or the semi-final, even for winning at the European level, gets the title of honored sports master. “Yes, well done to our players, they made a powerful breakthrough to achieve their result… the whole country supported them, but they didn’t become the best in the world. The whole country supported them, were pleased at their success, but there are some things that are not worth doing so spontaneously. I think that a lot of sportspeople at a high level would agree with me. “Calling Russian players from the World Cup honored masters of sport is a rash step that seems a step too far.” READ MORE: Russia to reward World Cup hero Cherchesov with new contract Gamova was named ‘Most Valuable Player’ at two World Championships, among other awards during a glittering volleyball career. The Russian football team received honors at the Kremlin on Saturday which included the ‘Alexander Nevsky Order’ for coach Stanislav Cherchesov and ‘Order of Honor’ awards for goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev and defender Sergei Ignashevich. The team’s unexpected World Cup run this summer included a last 16 penalty shootout victory over Spain before losing on a shootout in the quarter-final against Croatia.
The standout opposite hitter with the Canadian men's team has spent the past five months recovering from a stress fracture in his left tibia, or shin bone, after having his rookie professional season with a Polish team cut short.
"When I got to Poland [earlier this year] there wasn't much rest time and I overworked the shin," says Vernon-Evans, who has been medically cleared to play but is unsure if he'll travel to Poland and play Aug. 24 when Canada opens the three-day Hubert Jerzy Wagner Memorial tournament in Krakow. "I would love to play in the tournament but my main focus is world championships in September."
During a FIVB World League stop in Belgium with the national team last June, Vernon-Evans he had an X-ray taken that revealed a pre-stress fracture, a precursor to stress fracture when the bone structure becomes weaker.
He purchased new shoes that alleviated the pain and continued to play, helping Canada to the Final Six semifinals and its first-ever World League medal after defeating the United States for bronze.

However, Vernon-Evans' pain returned in February while playing for ONICO Warsaw and an MRI revealed a stress fracture. The 19-year-old had surgery in Poland on March 23 that included the insertion of a rod and a month later flew home to begin four to six months of rehab.
"I don't have many regrets, other than I should have been more in tune with my body," says Vernon-Evans, who has rejoined his teammates for full workouts. "I wouldn't have wanted to stop playing in the Final Six, but I should have identified [the injury] before getting to the point of having to stop playing. I need to be up front about any pain, no matter how severe it is."
Vernon-Evans' recovery began with mobility work using resistance bands and riding a stationary bike, a workout far less intense than he is accustomed to with the national team, which coupled with poor eating habits led to a noticeable change in appearance.
I'm making better meals and trying to make them look pretty.— Canadian men's volleyball player Sharone Vernon-Evans on making nutrition a top priority in his recovery from injury
"You can gain weight pretty fast by not doing any physical activity. The big thing for me now is nutrition," says Vernon-Evans, who has one year left on his deal with ONICO Warsaw. "That was the hardest thing at first because I would be eating a bunch of food as if I was still working out with the team. I've learned what's better for my body."
Vernon-Evans, who is on a meal plan and keeps Canada head coach Stephane Antiga updated daily, is cooking more than he did pre-injury.
"I'm making better meals and trying to make them look pretty," says the Scarborough, Ont., native, laughing. "I'm trying to get better at making salads and still trying to mix in vegetables here and there."
Vernon-Evans began weight training in May and joined his Canadian teammates at practice before they opened the Volleyball Nations League season that has replaced the World League as the premier annual men's tournament. In June, he resumed volleyball activities such as jumping, blocking, digging and setting four days a week, while also exercising five days a week in the pool.
In between workouts, Vernon-Evans watched his teammates via live stream as Canada posted an 8-7 record at the inaugural Volleyball Nations League tournament but failed to advance to the final round after finishing outside the top six.
A three-set sweep at the hands of Serbia on June 22 eliminated the Canadians from playoff contention, but they rebounded with sweeps of China and Japan on the final weekend.
"The way they bounced back," Vernon-Evans says, "shows how much heart and desire they have. We're grinders."
Canada's downfall was a three-match stretch when it lost to Bulgaria and dropped a five-setter to France before facing Serbia.
"I felt the most urge to want to play when we were losing, but I was in a helpless position," says Vernon-Evans, who ranked seventh in World League scoring last season with 53 points and eighth in spiking with a 45.92 per cent success rate.
"France is a great team, from one to 14, but we had a chance so that was the hard part [to swallow]. Bulgaria blocked ridiculously well and Serbia came out determined to make the Final Six."
Among the positives for Canada was a 3-0 upset of Brazil, its first victory over the top-ranked team since 2012 and fifth overall in 27 attempts.
"Everybody has at least a year of experience playing internationally and you can see the players excel. I'm proud of what all of them did," says Vernon-Evans, noting blocking and passing should be Canada's top priorities when it resumes play at the Wagner tourney. "We're playing in better leagues and against better competition."
Canada will hold a week-long training camp in Slovenia, starting Sept. 1, ahead of the men's world championship Sept. 10-30 in Bulgaria and Italy.

The Canadian men’s team secured its spot in the 2018 FIVB world championship with a 3-1 win over Mexico on Sunday in the third-place match of the NORCECA men’s championship.
“We knew it would be difficult — Mexico can serve and spike. We were not aggressive enough in the beginning, maybe not ready for a strong serve. I thought we played a serious game,” said Canada’s head coach Stéphane Antiga.
Canada finished the tournament with a 3-1 record and the bronze medal. Mexico finishes 3-2 and will advance to the next four-team world championship qualifier.
“That was our second goal — the first one was to win this competition and the second one was to qualify to World Championships, so we made [half our goals]. I think we needed one set to get over yesterday’s defeat against U.S,” Antiga said.
Mexico led Canada in attacks (51-50). Canada led in aces (6-4) and blocks (10-5).
“We didn’t come play in the beginning, it showed in our play. They have two big servers that gave us problems in the first set — Rangel and Barajas — but after we were able to side them out after one or two and that takes a lot out of their game,” said Canadian captain Gordon Perrin.
Errors proved costly for Mexico as Canada scored 32 points on Mexico’s miscues while Mexico scored 21 points on Canada’s errors.
Outside hitters Nick Hoag of Sherbrooke, Que., and Stephen Maar of Aurora, Ont., led the scoring with 18 points each. Maar had a match-high 16 spikes and Hoag had a match-high four aces.

They had high hopes for an Olympic medal but decided to break up the partnership after a disappointing performance in Rio.
Now, almost a year later, Canadians Sarah Pavan and Heather Bansley could be squaring off against each other with their new partners in the semifinals at the beach volleyball world championships in Vienna.
First, they’ll have to take care of a little business in the quarter-finals in order for that matchup to become reality.
Pavan and partner Melissa Humana-Paredes, who are ranked No. 2 on the FIVB World Tour, defeated Nina Betschart and Tanja Hüberli of Switzerland 2-0 (21-17, 23-21) on Thursday in the Round of 16. The Canadians will face Germany’s Julia Sude and Chantal Laboureur in the quarter-finals.
Bansley and Brandie Wilkerson also advanced Wednesday with a 2-1 (21-19, 16-21, 17-15) win over Cuba’s Lidiannis Echeverria and Leila Martinez. The win sets up a quarter-final matchup with Americans April Ross and Lauren Fendrick.
Should both Canadians teams win, Pavan and Bansley will be competing as adversaries for the second time since their split. Bansley and Wilkerson defeated Pavan and Humana-Paredes in a qualifier at the FIVB World Tour Finals in Toronto last September.
Bansley and Pavan split after four years together following their quarter-final loss at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
On the men’s side, Canadians Ben Saxton Chaim Schalk moved on to the Round of 16, defeating Chilean cousins Marco Grimalt and Esteban Grimalt 2-0 (23-12, 21-16).

Canada advanced to the men’s Pan American Cup semifinal after defeating the Dominican Republic 3-1 (25-20, 16-25, 25-21, 25-23) on Friday.
In front of the home crowd in Gatineau, Que., Canada started out well and built a narrow lead over their Caribbean opponents 16-14. Dominican Republic managed to tie at 18, but Brandon Koppers and captain Max Burt were two towers blocking their rivals. Setter Byron Keturakis made a difference from the service line as Canada took the opening set 25-20.
The Dominicans bounced back early in the second period, taking advantage of their rivals’ hitting and serving errors with a 25-16 win.
But Canada regrouped and shut the Dominican Republic out the rest of the way, using an aggressive and efficient third set to take the lead, and a shaky but acceptable fourth set to close out the match.

“We came out really good in the first set, we put a lot of service pressure on them, but we let them back in the second and they get a lot of confidence when you start giving them free points like that. They’re scrappy and they have got a lot of physicality,” said Burt. “We were able to settle it down in the third set and take control of the match again, which is really nice.”
Canada, who won bronze at last year’s event, will play either Argentina in the semifinals on Saturday, a game that can be seen live on cbcsports.ca.
“It’s a developmental team, and what happened in the second set is part of these young guys trying to be international players and fortunately they found their good game again and I’m pleased for them,” said head coach Larry McKay.

]]>Veteran outside Kyla Richey led the way for Canada as she earned 22 points, including 17 kills, to lead the Canadians to a 3-1 (20-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-21) win over Peru in the 2017 World Grand Prix at the Richmond Olympic Oval Saturday.
Alongside Richey, Canada’s Elly Wendel came off the bench to contribute 20 points in Canada’s first-ever World Grand Prix win on home court. The Canadian block also proved to be massive for the home side, with Canada putting up 18 blocks to Peru’s six.
Match Wrap: Canada’s Kyla Richey buries Peru for home court win1:28
The victory made further history for Canada, as their third victory in this year’s World Grand Prix marks the most wins a Canadian women’s team has ever earned in the tournament.
Peru’s Maguilaura Frias and Katherine Mabel Olemar, who was a factor off the bench, each had 11 points. However, Angela Leyva, who has been Peru’s top scorer throughout this year’s tournament, was held to just 10 points.
Peru took control early in the first set, opening a 13-6 lead and forcing Canada into a quick timeout. Canada pushed back, getting within three points at 19-16, but were never able to climb any closer. With Mirtha Uribe, Maguilaura Frias and Leyva tallying four points each, the Peruvians pulled away for a five-point win. A Uribe ace capped the set for the visitors. Coming off the bench, Canada’s Wendel had a team-high four points in the opening set.
With Canada riding the Wendel wave, the home side took a 10-8 lead early in the second set. Peru fought back, going ahead 13-12, before Wendel sparked a 5-0 Canadian run that gave her team the lead for good. With the home crowd spurring Canada on, they rolled to an eight-point win thanks in large part to a pair of superb blocks from middle Jennifer Cross. Wendel had 13 points through two sets, including 10 kills.
With momentum squarely in Canada’s corner, they scored the first six points of the third set and were in complete control the rest of the set. With Richey coming to life and collecting seven points in the set, Canada pulled away for a second straight eight-point win. Fittingly, Richey iced the set with the winning kill.
In the fourth set, Canada established a 6-1 lead and never trailed. Peru closed the gap to just one point, at 13-12, but three straight Canadian points sent Canada into the technical timeout with a four-point advantage. With Marie-Alex Bélanger coming off the bench midway through the set and sparking the Canadians from the right side, the home team held on for a four-point win. Richey earned match-point with a huge block.
“I’m really happy we could pull out that win. We had a bit of a slow start, but it’s really awesome that we could find our momentum and use the home crowd to our advantage,” said Richey. “Our game plan is to shut down No. 12 (Angela Leyva) and No. 20 (Carla Rueda Cotito) because they’re huge hitters and they’ve always been like that. Peru are long-time rivals and we knew their game plan, so if we can shut down them and neutralize the others, it’s going to be easier for us.”
Canada and Peru have met twice previously in the World Grand Prix, with the teams splitting their 2014 encounters, with Peru winning in four sets and Canada earning a straight sets victory.
Canada will wrap up its 2017 World Grand Prix campaign Sunday against Czech Republic, while Peru will take on Germany.
