A new version of virtualization software VMWare Fusion hit Macs this week. VMWare Fusion 11 adds a new application menu and support for the 18-core CPU configuration in the latest iMac Pro and the Core i9 for the 15-inch MacBook Pro.

The release appears to have been closely timed with the launch of macOS Mojave, which hit this Monday. VMWare Fusion is one of the most popular virtual-machine applications for Macs; its closest direct rival is Parallels Desktop, which also released a new version preparing for Mojave last month. Parallels has many strengths, including a leg up or two on VMWare Fusion with certain features. But VMWare Fusion does offer its own advantages over the Parallels release; among other things, it has moved to using Metal as the default graphics API on the Mac. Parallels still uses the Mac’s outdated OpenGL, though the Parallels team is working on making the transition.

  • VMware has confirmed the rumors from earlier this week that Michael Dell is thinking of taking his massive company, Dell Technologies.
  • VMware also confirmed that he’s is thinking of skipping the IPO process and going public in a reverse merger with VMware.

VMware on Friday confirmed the rumors that Michael Dell is considering taking his massive new company, Dell Technologies, public. It also said that Dell is not considering selling his company to an outside buyer.

VMware mentioned the possibility in an SEC filing. The filing said that Dell is considering a so-called reverse merger with VMware, a public company it mostly owns. But that it is also considering doing its own IPO, and it may do nothing at all.

While everyone was screaming about Meltdown and Spectre, another urgent security fix was already in progress for many corporate data centers and cloud providers who use products from Dell’s EMC and VMware units. A trio of critical newly-reported vulnerabilities in EMC and VMware backup and recovery tools—EMC Avamar, EMC NetWorker, EMC Integrated Data Protection Appliance, and vSphere Data Protection—could allow an attacker to gain root access to the systems, access to specific files, or inject malicious files into the server’s file system. These problems can only be fixed with upgrades.

The first of the vulnerabilities, designated in MITRE’s Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) list as CVE-2017-15548, allows an attacker to gain root access to the servers. This would potentially give someone direct access to backups on the server, allowing them to retrieve images of virtual machines, backed-up databases, and other data stored within the affected systems.

The second vulnerability, CVE-2017-15549, makes it possible for an attacker to potentially upload malicious files into “any location on the server file system” without authentication. And the third, CVE-2017-15550, is a privilege escalation bug that could allow someone with low-level authenticated access to access files within the server. The attacker could do this by using a Web request crafted to take advantage of “path traversal”—moving up and down within the directory structure of the file system used by the application.

VMware announced that its joint offering with Amazon Web Services is expanding to a second cloud infrastructure region, providing customers with additional geographic availability and access to new services.

Businesses can deploy applications through the VMware Cloud on AWS service in the cloud provider’s West Virginia data center, in addition to existing support for its Oregon region. That geographic expansion makes it easier for businesses to choose a nearby location, or one that matches up with the current location of their existing public cloud investments.

That service gives companies a full version of VMware’s Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC) stack running on top of AWS’s cloud hardware, so that it’s easier for them to migrate applications to the public cloud from private infrastructure.

Applications that rely on technology like VMware’s vSphere software will be able to get access to those same tools in the cloud, while also providing easier access to AWS’s suite of first-party services that run in its public cloud data centers.

The news comes as part of AWS’s re:Invent conference, which is taking place in Las Vegas this week. Just a week ago, Microsoft announced that it would be jumping into the same market with a competing service that was designed to allow customers with VMware workloads to run them on its cloud infrastructure.

These services are designed to drive cloud adoption by making it easier for businesses to take existing applications that are currently running in private datacenters and migrate them to the public cloud without much, if any, modification. While many companies are looking to move to the public cloud eventually, that transition seems uneven and messy at the moment, so streamlining matters could help drive significant business.

This isn’t the end of VMware’s geographic expansion plans. The company plans to build out its service in other countries as well, in order to help comply with data residency laws and provide lower latencies for customers outside the U.S.

The expansion comes a few months after VMware Cloud on AWS was made generally available, and roughly a year after it was unveiled to the world during a private press briefing with the CEOs of both firms.

Google may be losing to Amazon in the cloud wars, but the search giant has a not-so-secret weapon — and some brand-new partners — that could help it fight back.

The weapon is something called Kubernetes, a software project that started out as a way for Google to manage its massive server infrastructure and has since become a go-to tool for modern software developers. 

The partners are VMware and Pivotal, which is a spin-off of VMware valued at $ 2.8 billion. Together, the three companies plan to promote Kubernetes to large companies with their own data centers. 

The partnership, announced on Tuesday, is centered on Pivotal’s new Pivotal Container Service (PKS), which promises to make it effortless for companies to roll out Kubernetes. PKS allows developers build applications that can be easily installed on servers running VMware’s software or run in Google’s cloud.

Everybody gets something from this deal: Google gets access to VMware’s customers, which include many of the world’s largest companies. VMware gets to give its customers easy access to Google’s cloud, including all of its cutting-edge artificial intelligence services for software developers. And Pivotal gets cozier with both companies.

Package it up

Underlying Kubernetes is a trendy developer technology called software containers that was pioneered by Docker, a $ 1 billion-plus startup.

Containers are neat metaphorical boxes into which developers can package their software programs. They ensure the applications run in the same way regardless of the computers that are running them, be they laptops, servers, data centers or cloud platforms. Kubernetes is emerging as the most popular way to manage those containers.

“I’ve never had a single engineer push back on Kubernetes as the container standard for the industry,” James Watters, a senior vice president at Pivotal, told Business Insider.james watters pivotal labsPivotal Labs

Kubernetes has become such a smash hit that Google rivals Microsoft and Amazon decided to support the technology in their own clouds. But Google retains an edge with the technology. As the inventor of Kubernetes, Google Cloud has a reputation for being the best home for projects using the software, which it turns out is a lot of them.

PKS lets developers write the code they want to write while, behind the scenes, Kubernetes handles the hard part of managing the containers. Kubernetes simplifies the task of building software that has to run at large scales, which is why Google created it in the first place.

Tying PKS to VMware’s offerings will likely prove “attractive both to cloud-native developers and companies with strong investments in [VMware] products and skills,” said Dave Bartoletti, an analyst at tech research firm Forrester.

VMWare’s partnership with Google and Pivotal was born of simple demand, said Sanjay Poonen, the virtualization software provider’s chief operating officer. Companies are looking for ways to use Kubernetes, so VMware went looking for ways to offer the technology, he said.

“We go where our customers are going,” Poonen said.

Cloud fronts

The tie-up could help the three partners battle not just Amazon but other cloud players as well.  

Google’s target: Microsoft, which has long held that its investments in data center products like Windows Server give it an edge in the cloud wars. With PKS, Google will get access to companies that use VMware in their data centers. That could give the search giant a foothold from which it could spread its technology across both the cloud and the data center.

“Somehow, all this stuff should work well together,” said Sam Ramji, a vice president of product management at Google. “You’re gonna have data centers, and you’re gonna have cloud.”

Meanwhile, PKS has its sights set on Docker, which has its own technology to manage containers. With VMware and Google behind it, Pivotal believes that PKS can grab market share from Docker, Watters said.

Finally, VMWare is aiming at Red Hat, its longtime foe. The $ 17 billion enterprise software company offers OpenShift, an application development platform that’s similar in some ways to PKS. With the help of PKS and Google, VMware is hoping it can stem some of OpenShift’s growth.

“The three of us are coming for Red Hat,” Poonen said.
