While Facebook’s Oculus Quest won’t arrive until the spring of 2019, its seemingly beefier inside-out tracking plus 6DoF controllers may already pose a threat to HTC’s Vive Focus, as well as to other Vive Wave-based standalone VR headsets — including Pico’s Neo (whose ultrasound-based 6DoF controllers are still missing) and the more recent G2.
As such, HTC’s first order of business is to release a developer kit for adding not one, but two 6DoF controllers to substitute the Vive Focus’ single 3DoF controller — one that relies on software to simulate a 6DoF feel, but also often requires re-centering.
At the World Conference on VR Industry in Nanchang, China today, HTC announced this new “Vive 6DoF Developer Kit” which includes a pair of 6DoF controllers, plus a tracking attachment that goes on top of the Vive Focus. Much like how developers can port their two-handed VR experiences to single-controller VR headsets via Vive Wave, this time they can even preserve two-handed controls thanks to this dev kit.
For some reason, HTC is staying mum on how the 6DoF controller tracking works here; all we can see is the circular object on top of each controller, and the attachment gently bulges around a good part of the headset’s main body — likely for ensuring maximum coverage for tracking both controllers.
In a video clip provided by HTC’s China President, Alvin Wang Graylin, the 6DoF controllers appear to respond well even with his wide range of movements — he has incredibly long limbs — in Beat Saber, though I would have liked to see him try a faster song just to push the hardware a little further.

Until now, the Vive Focus has only been made available in China, and HTC’s also opened a flagship store in Shenzhen to help push its VR products. Meanwhile, the company is about to offer its Vive Focus to business customers in Japan starting from October 30th. But if all goes well, the company should still be pushing for an international rollout some time this year, especially with all the handy updates plus upcoming accessories made just for this headset.

August’s Steam hardware survey results are now in, and the Oculus Rift takes its biggest leap over the HTC Vive yet. Last month’s survey showed less than a 2 percent difference in the use of the two leading PC VR headsets on Valve’s gaming platform, but that gap grew to just under 4 percent in August. Vive came in with 42.58 percent of the total sh…Read More

According to HTC’s announcement today, the Intel WiGig-based Vive Wireless Adapter is priced at $ 299.99 and works with both Vive and Vive Pro, though the latter requires an additional $ 60 for a “compatibility pack” — it includes a connection cable, foam padding and an attachment device. For those who have been longing for this upgrade, they can pre-order it at Amazon, Best Buy, Microsoft, NewEgg and HTC’s very own Vive.com starting from September 5th. This will be followed by the official launch on the 24th.
For those who already have a Vive or Vive Pro set up, the only system requirement here is a PCI-e slot on the PC (or an external PCI-e enclosure) for installing the wireless adapter’s sensor. The sensor is then good for up to six meters with its 150-degree field of view, so long as it has a direct line of sight to the wireless adapter on one’s head. Better yet, you can have multiple Vive users taking advantage of this wireless adapter within the same space simultaneously, meaning you don’t have to worry about people tripping over or find a way to suspend the cables. What you do need to keep an eye on is the battery life: The included HTC QC 3.0 PowerBank will last for up to 2.5 hours, and you can obviously buy more from the official website.
Given that the Vive is currently available for $ 499, the wireless kit’s $ 299.99 price tag may be hard to stomach for some consumers, but it’ll likely be a welcomed upgrade for business clients, especially the likes of VR arcades, shops and museums. That is, of course, assuming that HTC and Intel’s collaboration have ironed out most issues after all this time.

Major League Baseball got into VR with a home run derby simulator that fans tried at the All-Star game and select ballparks last season. Earlier this year, the MLB promised it would bring the experience to consumer virtual reality sets in spring. While it didn’t arrive in time for Opening Day, aspiring sluggers can load up the game today and tee off on their own virtual home run derby on PSVR and HTC Vive for $ 20.
In MLB Home Run Derby VR, fans can play in three recreated ballparks: Marlins Park in Miami, Nationals Park in Washington, DC, and Progressive Field in Cleveland. The league will also debut the game with a full virtual reality setup at 12 stadiums across the country this year, from the Arizona’s Diamondback’s Chase Field to the Tampa Bay Rays’ Tropicana Field.
If gamers don’t have a virtual reality headset, they can still play the free 2D mobile version on iOS and Android, which has an updated roster for the 2018 season with more than 50 players from the last eight years of MLB home run derbies.

Last week, when discussing the HTC Vive Pro’s sky-high, $ 799 headset-only price, we noticed a bit of an oddity surrounding the pricing of the tracking base stations and controllers needed to go along with the system. Picking up two of each accessory at HTC’s retail pricing would run about $ 530, or $ 30 more than a $ 500 original Vive bundle which also includes the same accessories.
Someone at HTC seems to have noticed the same oddity, because the company is now offering a “Pro Headset Accessory Starter Kit” for the slightly reduced price of about $ 450 ($ 450.47, to be exact), down about $ 80 from the a la carte price. As noted by UploadVR, the accessory pack doesn’t currently show up for purchase on the Vive’s main accessory store page, but it does appear as an additional option after the Vive Pro is added to your online shopping cart.
The deal lowers the “starter” price for a Vive Pro experience to about $ 1,250, not including the high-end computer needed to power the setup. But the new price doesn’t change the fact that, for about $ 50 more, you can buy a Vive Pro and an original Vive, getting two headsets and one set of needed accessories for very nearly the same price (as if that wasn’t enough, the original Vive comes with a copy of Fallout 4 VR to boot).

Once staunch rivals in high-end VR, it now seems Facebook-owned Oculus and HTC are treading different paths. While Oculus is gearing up to launch a more affordable standalone headset, HTC has gone in the opposite direction with the Vive Pro, a new top-of-the range facehugger announced at this year’s CES. Today, HTC has revealed the Vive Pro is the antithesis of affordable at $ 799/£799, and that it’s now available to pre-order globally ahead of its April 5th shipping date.
For that significant wad of dough, you’re getting higher-res OLED displays with a combined resolution of 2,880 x 1,600, up from the Vive’s 2,160 x 1,200. In addition to a sharper image, the headset promises more immersive sound through new built-in headphones with 3D audio and noise cancelling features. The Vive Pro should be more comfortable to wear, too, thanks to a redesigned strap that distributes the weight of the headset more evenly across your noggin — much like the Deluxe Audio Strap for the original Vive does. The Pro also includes dual, depth-sensing cameras on the front, the full potential of which is yet to be realized.
At $ 799 for just the headset, the Vive Pro is aimed at consumers wanting to be on the bleeding edge of VR hardware. It works with the existing Vive controllers and base stations for room-scale tracking (SteamVR Tracking versions 1.0 and 2.0 are supported), so no need to double up on peripherals if you already have them at home. If you pick up a Pro before June 3rd, you’ll get the added bonus of a free six-month subscription to Viveport (the monthly price of which increases by a coupla bucks in a few days, remember). After this time, as is the current offer, you’ll get just two months of all-you-can eat experiences thrown in, as well as the free copy of Fallout 4 VR every customer receives.
The Vive Pro isn’t meant to replace the existing Vive headset, but to reflect the fact there’s a new generation of hardware in town, the original Vive bundle (which includes controllers, base stations and other accessories) is being reduced by $ 100 to $ 499 — those outside the US will see an equivalent discount in their local currency. When HTC revealed the Pro at CES, it also showed off the Vive wireless adapter, which uses Intel’s WiGig tech to free you from the tyranny of tethers. There’s no word on when that might be available today, though, so for now you’re still tied to your PC even if you believe you’re in another world.
]]>AUSTIN, Texas—HTC’s VR team was out in full force at this year’s South By Southwest festival, mostly due to the upcoming film adaptation of Ready Player One. The top floor of a jam-packed, book-to-film “experience” event included an hour-plus wait to play a few Ready Player One-themed VR games, all slated to launch alongside the film later this month.
Curiously, though, the best part of the whole thing wasn’t really advertised anywhere at the event. Tucked behind some giant photo-op insanity like an Iron Giant replica and a tricked-out Delorean was a piece of futuristic tech I was way more interested in: the HTC Vive Pro.
Though we took a quick glance at the upcoming Vive Pro during January’s CES, this SXSW event was the first time I got to scrutinize the hardware, which will launch later this year as the first “2.0” headset in the PC-VR era. We’ve yet to answer a giant question mark—how much will this upgraded VR headset cost—but after an impressive SXSW test, my acceptable price point definitely shot up a hundred bucks or so.

For the first time ever since the launch of both headsets in early 2016, the Oculus Rift has overtaken the HTC Vive on the monthly Steam hardware survey.
The survey is entirely optional and scans a user’s PC for various hardware components, including any VR headsets that may be connected. After a few months of catching up to Vive, the Rift was neck-and-neck with its rival in January’s survey with 0.9 percent between the two. However, February saw Oculus step past HTC; Rift took 47.31 percent of the total hardware use, and Vive fell to 45.38 percent, leaving just under 2 percent between them. It’s still a tight race, then, but this is the first time Rift has managed to surpass Vive.

Again, this is in no way confirmation that the Oculus Rift has sold more units than the HTC Vive, as neither headset has had official sales figures released, but it’s the best shot we’ve got at gauging the market share right now. Rift also took the ‘Most Popular Headset’ space in Steam’s individual listings for the second time ever.
Elsewhere, Windows Mixed Reality headsets grew marginally this month from 5.17 percent up to 5.36 percent.
This puts HTC and Oculus at an interesting position for 2018. Rift has so far had Vive beaten on price, offering $ 400 for headset and Touch controllers, while Vive is significantly more expensive at $ 600. But HTC is now prepping for the release of its enhanced Vive Pro headset, which is likely to cost most but bests Oculus in the display division. Could Pro’s release help HTC sway the numbers back in its favor?

Major League Baseball has gotten into VR lately with a host of initiatives, including partnerships with Google for At Bat VR, Intel for “Game of the Week” live streams and Samsung for immersive highlights of the 2017 season. Now MLB is bringing a VR Home Run Derby that debuted at the All-Star Game and select ballparks to your home via PlayStation VR and HTC Vive.
The game should be available this spring on both platforms, though there are no details on pricing or a specific release date at this time. The game will put you at the plate in three different MLB stadiums — Marlins Park in Miami, Nationals Park in Washington, DC and Progressive Field in Cleveland — to hit as many home runs as you can. MLB plans to expand the number of stadiums you can virtually visit to at least 10 over the course of the 2018 season.
