FIFA Mobile has usually played second fiddle to its ‘full-size’ counterparts. That gap just closed a bit, however. EA has updated FIFA Mobile on Android and iOS for the new season, and it includes some much-needed improvements. There’s a full gameplay engine revamp that promises more fluid animation as well as smarter, more realistic AI. You can also expect more authentic-looking star players (like Neymar above) and reworked menus. And yes, there are some significant gameplay changes.
You now have real-time Head to Head multiplayer, for instance, although you may square off against an AI early on to improve your skills. Offline, there’s a new Team Chemistry system that boosts your starting lineup when you include players from the same real-world team, league or country. Pick a few players from Paris Saint-Germain and they may play more effectively than if you simply cherry-picked famous names from around the world.
Just make sure you have a reasonably powerful device. The base game doesn’t ask for much (2012-era hardware can work), but the Head to Head mode typically demands a phone or tablet that would have been flagship-level in 2014 or later. Certain older or lower-end Snapdragon-based devices are right out, EA said. You should be alright if you’re using a reasonably quick and modern phone, but you might otherwise have to settle for playing against AI opponents.

]]>Only When Howling is a game of reflection, having you explore the stories of three characters through striking visual interpretations of their feelings of love, passion, gratitude, and sacrifice.
Only When Howling seeks to tell its story through an array of sumptuous visuals that cascade into a seemingly-bleak world, carrying the characters’ thoughts and passions into something almost emotionally-tangible through their detail and beauty. You can also interact with many of these scenes in varied ways, gently guiding what you see of the story as you wander through the thoughts of the characters on your own.
Only When Howling leaves itself open to many interpretations, only asking that you open yourself up to feel through these visuals, asking yourself what they mean to you, and why, as you take this journey alongside the characters.
Only When Howling is available for $ 2.99 on the App Store and $ 3.99 on Google Play. For more information on the game and developer Kim Savory Interactive, you can head to the developer’s site or follow them on YouTube and Twitter.
]]>Rym 9000‘s trailer rightfully starts with an epilepsy warning, as the game’s distorted, trembling, shifting visuals are on the cusp of overwhelming the eyes at almost every moment, taking players through a hyper-stimulating roller coaster ride of lights, colors, effects, and sound.
Oh yeah the shooting part is swell too.
Rym 9000 is about a hunting for a legendary treasure on the moon, which is protected by five stages of eye-blasting action. Players will hurtle through space, their speed communicated through the game’s constantly-shifting effects and shaking ships. The visual effects of the game give a sense of constant pressure and momentum, like everything is on the verge of shaking to pieces as players rush toward the treasure, giving an almost tactile sense of shuddering.
Players who do well can place their names on a leaderboard, but they can also unlock achievements that drop bits of lore about the world of Rym 9000 as well, so there’s plenty of goodies for players even if they aren’t the best worldwide. Whether they’re skilled pilots or not, the visual style of Rym 9000 is something well worth seeing, capturing a sense of speed in a way that you can practically feel it.
Rym 9000 is available for $ 5.99 on Itch.io and Steam. For more information on the game and developer Sonoshee, you can follow them on Tumblr, YouTube, and Twitter.

Other than the move toward wireless VR and an obsession with developing groundbreaking new haptic technologies, the biggest trend at CES this year for virtual reality was a focus on improved resolutions for HMD displays. From the Vive Pro’s purported “3K” combined resolution and the crisp, clear quality of Samsung’s Odyssey headset, all the way up to the enormous 8K combined resolution of the Pimax, screen doors were almost nowhere to be found at this conference.
After spending a little bit of time with the Pimax 8K at CES this week we’ve got a few thoughts about where the headset is at currently and where it needs to go next in order to succeed.
But first, a bit of background information. Everyone that’s ever spent any significant amount of time in VR knows that one of the biggest problems is that displays just aren’t sharp enough to provide the type of visual clarity needed for real immersion.
Since the pixels are so large and apparent when you press your eyes that close to the screen, it results in a “screen door effect” most of the time, or rather it makes it feel like you’re looking at the VR world through a screen door. It’s distracting and robs experiences of their beauty.
Lower resolutions lead to other issues as well, such as a lack of screen real estate and not being able to display enough details or information all at once, as well as blurriness for things like letters and numbers which makes it almost impossible to really read things in VR right now on the Rift, Vive, or PSVR.

Earlier this week the Vive Pro represented an incremental “3K” step towards a clearer and crisper VR future, but Pimax wants to leapfrog that incremental step and go straight for more than doubling current headset resolutions with their 8K offering. But, full disclosure, none of those resolution approximations are even accurate.
Sure, the Vive Pro says it has “3K” resolution, but it’s actually just 2,880-by-1,600 combined across both lenses and common sense tells you that 2,880 pixels is in fact not the same as 3,000 pixels but we round that up and say it’s a 3K headset. The same goes for most “4K” TVs on the market — they call it that, but most actually top out at more like 3,840-by-2,160. The same concept is at play here with the Pimax 8K because it isn’t actually an 8,000 pixels wide display. Technically, it’s only two 3,820 -by-2,160 lenses which combine together to create a perceived 7,640-by-2,160 resolution which is rounded up to 8K.
I’m explaining all of this not just so that people understand that technical terms often have a bit of nuance in them, but also because the Pimax 8K is in and of itself an overly nuanced device.

For my demo they dropped me into WEVR’s theBlu, a classic VR experience at this point. The slice I tried was only a few minutes long and it was entirely stationary. Like a floating scuba diver, I waited as fish of all shapes, sizes, and colors swam around me. Before long an enormous whale appeared and then brightly colored jelly fish.
Truthfully, theBlu has never looked so stunning. Due to the massive resolution bump in the Pimax I could see individual bubbles and morsels of floating debris like never before. When I got close to a fish or environmental texture instead of seeing a screen door effect I just saw crisp, clean designs.
After raising over $ 4.2M on Kickstarter and aiming to start shipping units by the end of 2017, production was delayed. That’s not uncommon for Kickstarter projects though.
The new model I tried at CES this week certainly surprised me from a pure visual clarity perspective, but it’s not without its problems. For starters, the tracking still needs work. If I moved my head quickly there did appear to be some slight jittering and minor latency issues. This was barely noticeable in something like theBlu, which simply asks me to stand still and stare at fish as they swim by, but if I had been playing a game that required quick movements and fast response times, that could be a major issue.

Also, on the outer edges of each lens there was a distracting distortion effect in my peripheral vision. It was almost like a tiny sliver of the lens was being replicated at the far edges in a narrow vertical mirror, similar to the effect that happens when you get droplets of water inside your swimming goggles. It was a bizarre effect that was incredibly distracting. The field of view was absolutely massive, as you can tell from the sheer size of the thing, but I’d rather they shave off a few degrees and eliminate the distraction goggle flickering effect.
The brightness worked great, vertical field of view was excellent (much larger than any other VR headset I’ve seen), and it wasn’t as uncomfortable as I thought it’d be. It’s certainly nowhere near as comfy as its competitors because of how much larger and heavier it is, but they’ve done a good job balancing that as much as they can. I don’t know if I’d have the same opinion after playing an hour or more of an active VR game, but it was okay for a short demo.
Since my experience was so passive I couldn’t test out the base stations themselves or use the controllers really (they gave me one to hold, but I could only see a ghostly outline in front of me when I waved my hand so it was far from a robust test) and this was clearly a very controlled environment.
Ultimately the Pimax 8K seems to be coming along OK, although it doesn’t feel like it’s made any massive improvements since we heard from them last. The vast majority of VR rigs won’t be able to take full advantage of a display this enormous yet and developers would be better off spending their time catering to the minimum specifications to broaden the VR market than optimizing for ultra-wide 8K VR headsets that represent a minuscule corner of the overall industry.

While companies like Pimax do valuable work pushing display power forward, it doesn’t feel like it’s ready to be a consumer device just yet. Kickstarter backers should start receiving shipments in Q2 of 2018 according to what we heard last from the company.

]]>Faith follows a young priest back to a home where an apparent case of demonic possession left few alive a year before. Investigating these past events will dredge up horrific memories and even more unsettling beings, though, testing players’ bravery through the horror title’s incredible use of rotoscope, Spectrum-like visuals, and frightening sound.
Players will comb through the house where the demonic possession supposedly occurred and the nearby grounds, dealing with periodic monstrous appearances with a quick flick of the cross. Well, some of them. There are far more powerful presences that lurk nearby – disturbing beasts that are made all the more discomforting by the game’s rotoscope animation. The cross may not be enough for some of these creatures, requiring the player dig deep for answers in order to survive their presence.
Faith makes good use of its limited visuals to frighten the player, creating a sense that things never look quite right. Like The Last Door, the minimalist look creates this sense that what you are looking at is not quite right, allowing player imagination to give it a deeper dread. However, it’s the sound and music that makes this game crawl under the skin, using distorted sound and muffled voice to make the senses beg to be free of this nightmare we willing subject ourselves to.
It may appear simple, but Faith hides some incredible scares (without relying on jumps) for horror fans, taking them down many creepy story paths. It’s also inexcusable not to play since you can pay whatever you like for it.
Faith is available for whatever you wish to pay for it on Itch.io. For more information on the game and Airdorf Games, you can follow them on Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter.

GUEST:
The way we create and consume visual content has changed significantly with the advent of both digital and mobile cameras. Today, algorithms bring on the next wave of innovation and evolution in the space.
AI technologies are increasingly good at classifying, organizing and understanding images, changing the way both brands and creators think about visuals.
Cheaper and faster hardware, along with an abundance of rich data sets, has led to the visual computing revolution this past decade. Technology alters the entire creative process: ideation, shooting, editing, distributing, and discovery. The gap between mobile cameras and professional gear is quickly decreasing, giving everyone the ability to create photos and get their photos discovered. Pictures taken on iPhones are now used on the covers of magazines and in ads, so quality is no longer a barrier — and mobile cameras get better with every release. In a world where each photograph is competing for attention, how do we ensure that we don’t miss out on great content buried among noise?
This task is moving beyond the human scope of effort. A person simply cannot sort through the countless photos uploaded each day. At the stock photo service EyeEm, we’re using AI to help solve this problem. Our researchers and curators trained our algorithm to understand which photos are commercially viable and which aren’t. The only way to handle the huge volumes of content while ensuring that everyone is able to contribute is through technology.
AI can also be helpful on the creator side. An algorithm can analyze the photos on your camera roll and suggest the best to upload. It might sometimes feel intimidating to upload your photos to a platform full of beautiful imagery. An algorithm like this can help reduce that friction and encourage photographers to upload their photos by surfacing and recommending great photos they’ve taken. This AI can run offline and on-device (meaning nothing gets uploaded to the servers beforehand).
When finding a relevant image, it’s personal. What’s relevant for one person or brand may not be relevant for another. Today, it’s becoming a must to personalize search results, and AI has helped evolve search to make this happen.
Applying AI can help find the best images that truly match a brand’s aesthetic or style. Machines can look at photos, extract relevant information, and become smart enough to understand what a brand wants. For example, researchers can train AI to find images within a library that match a brand aesthetic to help consultants gain access to on-brand images for the companies they work with.
The hype of AI is real, but so is the ROI. Online ad spend has already overtaken TV spend (which itself is a $ 72 billion industry), with more than $ 40 billion spent on social platforms alone. Computer vision technology is also leveraged to deeply understand the impact of visuals on things like conversion, retention, and customer acquisition. AI is perfectly poised to deeply affect marketing, from sourcing and editing to predicting the performance of campaigns and visuals.
It might seem like these technologies replace human creators and consumers, but we believe they’re empowering us by offering creative freedom. Machines won’t take over the work of photographers, they will simply make it quicker and easier to complete. The boring stuff goes out the window, giving creators more time to focus on what matters: creation.
This piece was coauthored by Ramzi Rizk, cofounder and chief technology officer of stock photo provider EyeEm, and Appu Shaji, its head of research and development.

Enlarge / Valerian and Laureline, seen here looking like they’re trying their best to imagine a romantic plotline that makes more sense than what they were given. (credit: STX Films)
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets could be the most enjoyable 2017 film destined to win a Razzie award. Some of its disparate elements deserve a “bad,” “poor,” or even “embarrassing” rating. The film strays so far from its comic source material that you might call it treasonous. And it co-stars Rihanna, which, let’s face it, has yet to work out well for a Hollywood production.
Even with those issues, I still had a blast. I went into my Valerian screening hoping to get “Luc Besson sci-fi,” with elaborate, beautifully illustrated sequences, tongue-in-cheek schlock, and a weirdly French skew on high-octane cinema. Those expectations were met. I laughed, cheered, and roared both at and with the film. Valerian comes packed with just enough Fifth Element flavor to make it worth a solid, low-expectations trip to the movie theater.

The Xbox One X will leave gamers losing track of time thanks to the levels of immersion the high-end console offers, Microsoft have boasted.
The Redmond-based firm believe the combination of Dolby Atmos audio as well as native 4K HDR visuals will give owners a “premium” and “magic” experience.
Microsoft’s lofty goals for the Xbox One X were revealed by Mike Ybarra, the Corporate VP of Xbox and Windows gaming.
Speaking to The Guardian, he said: “I always say to my game teams, ‘Look, if you provide Dolby Atmos spatial audio, high-dynamic range, 8-million pixels on the screen, people will lose track of time because they’ll be having so much fun. That immersion is really what we’re after.
“When we created this box it was really about immersion more than anything else we wanted to do.
“I mean, you played Forza Horizon 3 on Windows at 4K, and we saw those images, and those things are breathtaking. When we set out, we started talking about these effects and how they impacted us.
“That’s immersion; it is part of the magic of the entertainment industry that we’re in.”
The Xbox One X, which has a November 7 release date, will cost £449 in the UK and offers Dolby Atmos support through headphones and via a sound system.
So far Crackdown 3 and Gears of War 4 are the only games announced for Xbox One with Dolby Atmos support.
However, they’re unlikely to be the last.
And in the past few days Netflix began offering Dolby Atmos support on the Xbox One S.
Ybarra added: “We have a group of gamers that’s growing larger and larger, who want the very best, and they’re investing their time and money in franchises over a long run.
“When you give them a console that lets them have that premium experience, and the games they’re already playing are going to be able to get better, and that was an important part of it, we said, ‘OK, like, this is an opportunity we should go after.”
Microsoft have dubbed the Xbox One X as the most powerful console in the world, and it boasts a six-teraflop graphics processor.
It also has a high-end compact liquid-cooled vapour system.
Pre-order pages for the Xbox One X have gone live at a number of retailers, but it’s not available to pre-order just yet.
This may be because the Xbox One X has yet to receive Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approval, according to the console’s official site.
