Ah, 2007: the days when Windows Vista was all the rage (or inducing rage), the Apple TV was brand new and music download stores were the hottest way to get the latest albums. Apple certainly remembers that year… and would like you to move on. The company has posted a support page warning that the iTunes Store will no longer work on Windows XP, Windows Vista and first-generation Apple TVs as of May 25th. iTunes itself will function, but new purchases and re-downloads are off limits. “Security changes” necessitate dropping these older platforms, Apple said.

The writing has been on the wall for a while. iTunes 12 already requires at least Windows 7, and a first-run Apple TV is very limited in what it can do (you aren’t about to watch YouTube or stream Apple Music). However, this is the surest sign yet that Apple wants those with older devices to get with the times. While you’re probably using something considerably newer if you’re reading this, the cutoff might help you nudge a friend who’s still clinging to an ancient PC.

Mozilla today announced that it will completely drop support for Firefox on Windows XP and Windows Vista in June 2018. Firefox users on those two platforms can expect security updates until then, but they should make an effort to upgrade Windows sooner rather than later.

When Mozilla released Firefox 53 in April 2017, it no longer supported Windows XP and Windows Vista. Instead, XP and Vista users were moved to the Firefox Extended Support Release (ESR). Firefox ESR is designed for schools, universities, businesses, and others who need help with mass deployments.

Mozilla promised last December to reassess user numbers in mid-2017 and announce a final support end date for the two operating systems. That time, while a bit late, has now come.

In August 2016, Mozilla dropped Firefox support for OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, OS X 10.7 Lion, and OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. Unlike Google, which in addition to old OS X releases also dropped Windows XP and Vista support, Mozilla decided to keep supporting older versions of Windows.

Mozilla correctly notes that “unsupported operating systems receive no security updates, have known exploits, and are dangerous for you to use” and “strongly encourages” users to “upgrade to a version of Windows that is supported by Microsoft.”

Microsoft retired Mainstream Support for Windows XP on April 14, 2009 and then pulled Extended Support for the operating system on April 8, 2014. Mainstream Support for Vista ended on April 10, 2012 and Extended Support was pulled on April 11, 2017. Mozilla thus supported XP and Vista even longer than Microsoft.

Windows XP users cannot upgrade to newer versions of Microsoft’s browser: IE8 is the latest version they can install. IE9 is only available for Windows Vista and Windows 7, while IE10 and IE11 are only for Windows 7 and Windows 8. Many XP and Vista users thus choose to use third-party browsers.

Since neither IE nor Chrome are options options, many are using Firefox. That’s likely why Mozilla kept support around for long — it’s the best option for hundreds of millions of users.

Last month, XP had less than 6 percent market share, per Net Applications. In fact, XP and Vista combined held 6.12 percent of the pie — not an insignificant number to be sure, but one that shows people need to be encouraged to get off ancient operating systems. Even with an up-to-date browser, using XP and Vista is simply a terrible security choice.

If you’re using an operating system that’s over a decade old to play Blizzard games, we have some bad news for you. Starting in October, Blizzard says it will “begin the process of ending support for Windows XP and Windows Vista in World of Warcraft, StarCraft II, Diablo III, Hearthstone, and Heroes of the Storm.”

The fact that Blizzard was still supporting these long-in-the-tooth Microsoft OSes (XP launched in 2001, Vista launched in early 2007) says something about the long tail of low-end hardware that the company targets alongside top-of-the-line modern systems. Though Microsoft dropped mainstream support for Windows XP and Windows Vista years ago—and ceased issuing security fixes for the operating systems in 2014 (with another issued earlier this year)—Blizzard says that a “decent portion of our audience was still using” the platforms long after Microsoft left them for dead. Three major Windows releases later, though, the “vast majority of our audience has upgraded” to a more recent OS, Blizzard says.

Windows XP’s longevity was something of an outlier in the world of PC operating systems, still seeing significant adoption a decade after its launch. When Microsoft finally pulled the plug on mainstream support for the OS in 2014, it was still running on 29 percent of Web users’ PCs. Even today, XP commands a surprising 6.4 percent of all desktop Web users, according to NetMarketShare, far ahead of Vista’s 0.53 percent.

Today Windows Update sees the first mainstream release of the Windows 10 Creators Update and the last public patches, ever, for Windows Vista.

Released to manufacturing on November 8, 2006 and shipping to consumers on January 30, 2007, Windows Vista had a troubled development and a troubled life once it shipped. But it was an essential Windows release, laying the groundwork for Windows 7 and beyond. For all the criticism that Vista and Microsoft received, the company never really backtracked on the contentious aspects of the release. After a while, those aspects just stopped being contentious.

Troubled development

Windows Vista was originally meant to be grander in scope and ambition. Microsoft’s Longhorn project envisaged a new database-like file system known as WinFS, a radically new development model and set of APIs based on .NET, and a 3D accelerated user interface built using these APIs.
