Writer/director/podcaster Kevin Smith has visited J.J. Abrams‘ Star Wars Episode 9 set, and he hated every second of it. “It was dumb,” Smith said of the set. “I looked around, shrugged my shoulders, and said, ‘This is the best you got?’ I interrupted J.J. in the middle of a take and just said, ‘Hey man, thanks for the invite, but this sucks. I’m outta here.’”

I’m kidding, of course. Smith, as rabid a Star Wars fan as you’ll ever find, brought back several tidbits from his travels to the film’s London set, and they’re all overwhelmingly positive – including how he witnessed a performance that drove him to tears. Watch him recount his visit in a video below.

Kevin Smith’s Star Wars Episode 9 Set Visit

Smith was a guest on Good Morning America and regaled the hosts with tales of his travels to a galaxy far, far away. In case you can’t watch the video above, I’ll transcribe his relevant quotes:

“Number one, J.J.’s doing the Lord’s work, man. This movie looks fantastic. It’s a year away, but man it looks fantastic. I wept on set because I saw somebody give a career-best performance. Somebody I’ve seen in these movies before. I rolled a tear, it was so darn powerful. Biggest set I’ve ever seen in my life. The dude’s not directing a movie, it’s like he’s directing a small country. The thing is so massive.”

Smith says he saw two scenes being filmed, one of which was “absolutely amazing,” and says he overheard plot details while he was there – but of course, he couldn’t reveal what those details might be.

Since we’re legally bound by Internet Law to speculate about every single element of Star Wars news, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, let’s talk about which actor may have driven Smith to tears on the set. Could it have been Mark Hamill? Does his Force ghost get a powerful close-up moment that could have sent Smith over the edge? It doesn’t seem likely that it was any of the younger cast members, because their careers are still relatively fresh. If I were to bet money on this, I’d put all of my chips on Billy Dee Williams, who will reprise his role as Lando Calrissian. Audiences haven’t seen Williams as the live-action Lando since 1983’s Return of the Jedi, so it makes sense that Smith might get caught up in the emotion of seeing him return.

Smith always has exceptionally nice things to say about the productions he visits, so keep that in mind when digesting his comments here. He also visited the set of The Force Awakens and admitted to breaking down into tears on that set as well, and StarWarsUnderworld reminds us that Smith actually lent his voice to one of the Stormtroopers during post-production on that movie.

Star Wars: Episode 9 hits theaters on December 20, 2019.

Visiting South Africa? Don't Miss the Most Botanically Biodiverse Place on Earth https://briefnews.eu/visiting-south-africa-dont-miss-the-most-botanically-biodiverse-place-on-earth/ https://briefnews.eu/visiting-south-africa-dont-miss-the-most-botanically-biodiverse-place-on-earth/#respond Sat, 10 Nov 2018 06:36:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/visiting-south-africa-dont-miss-the-most-botanically-biodiverse-place-on-earth/ A tiny, iridescent orange-breasted sunbird vies with a pair of larger Cape sugarbirds for the nectar buried in the fist-sized crimson blooms of the suikerbossie, aka sugarbush. A few yards away, on the banks of a cola-colored stream, a forest of marsh butterfly lilies and their foot-long golden flower spikes sways pendulously in the breeze. Even on the deliberately unmown lawns, it’s impossible not to trample the pink, blue and yellow blooms of the myriad bulbs buried just below the surface.

Spring is a special time in the Harold Porter National Botanical Garden, but in truth there’s always something showing off. Move aside, Amazon Rainforest — the Cape Floristic Region in South Africa, with 9,500 plant species (including 6,500 endemic) squeezed into an area slightly smaller than the state of Connecticut, is the most botanically biodiverse place on the planet.

Pity, then, that while most visitors to Cape Town include a visit to the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden on their itineraries, only a smattering make it as far as Harold Porter, some 60 miles away. Don’t get me wrong. Kirstenbosch, on the slopes of Table Mountain, is great. But its mandate to showcase plant species from all over South Africa does make it a bit of a plant zoo. “We only focus on species found in the Overberg Region,” says Harold Porter nurseryman Ebrahim Hull. “And we’re much cheaper and quieter too.”

Marlin jackson 514957 unsplash

Hull, who has become an accomplished botanical artist since picking up a paintbrush in 2010, says Harold Porter’s five main display gardens provide a great crash course in fynbos (to give the Cape Floristic Region its unpretentious nickname). The Erica (860 species of heath with delicate blooms) and Proteaceae (1,660 species of bushes and trees with flowers ranging from large to enormous) gardens showcase the region’s two most famous flower families, while the Wetlands (the boardwalk is great for kids), Dune and Renosterveld gardens give insight into the various habitats in the area.

However hard you look, there’s one plant you won’t find in the garden itself.

But visitors should also check out the garden’s wild, unkempt sections. Hull advises starting with Leopard’s Kloof Gorge (a two-hour round-trip hike — complete with ladders and chains — to a forest wonderland of ferns and waterfalls) before continuing on the contour path (great ocean views and one of Hull’s favorite places to paint Ericas) to Disakloof, the garden’s other main watercourse. Here, after crossing a wooden bridge into a forested section, a flattish path leads to a spectacular waterfall that, in the summer months between December and February, is coated with the delicate red blooms of the Cape disa.

However hard you look, there’s one plant you won’t find in the garden itself. The Marsh Rose, with its “exceptionally lovely, drooping rosy-red flowerheads,” is found only in “six small, severely fragmented subpopulations,” in the mountains above Betty’s Bay according to the South African National Biodiversity Institute. Hull could tell you how to find one of these populations (a three-hour uphill scramble with no path and very few landmarks), but because of the vulnerability of the species he’d rather not.

He’s got a better idea. Simply walk out of the garden and across the road to Robbie Thomas’ house. Provided you visit in the cooler months, when the Marsh Rose blooms, Thomas — an expert propagator whose wife, Vicky, happens to be Hull’s botanical art mentor — will be happy to show you the specimens he has grafted.

This isn’t Kirstenbosch, remember.

We saw a lot on our family vacation to California this summer: epic coastline views, acre after acre of almond groves, forest fires, and Venice Beach, to name a few things. Thanks to friends and colleagues, we had a long list of sites to see. One such place, suggested by Cyrus Farivar, was Musée Mécanique. Located on San Francisco’s historic Fisherman’s Wharf, the Musée Mécanique bills itself as one of the largest privately owned collection of antique arcade machines in the world.

For Gen Xers like me, vintage arcades conjure up images of Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Tempest, and Crazy Climber. I make regular pilgrimages to Galloping Ghost, a suburban Chicago arcade that has over 400 playable classic arcade games and pinball tables.

Musée Mécanique has some classic video games, but the focus of the collection is primarily on coin-operated mechanical arcade machines and musical instruments. According to the Musée website, most of the machines are from the private collection of fifth-generation San Franciscan Edward Zelinsky. The collecting bug bit him as a child, and he made his first purchase—a penny skill game—in 1933 at age 11. By the time he passed away in 2004 at the age of 82, he had amassed well over 300 antique coin-op machines.

The Australian government is preparing to ban whistleblower and activist Chelsea Manning because she does not meet the country’s “character requirement.”

The former soldier spent seven years in prison, including 11 months in solitary confinement, for leaking a trove of classified military documents to Wikileaks which revealed information about US operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

After visiting Douma, western media begin to question ‘gas attack’ narrative https://briefnews.eu/after-visiting-douma-western-media-begin-to-question-gas-attack-narrative/ https://briefnews.eu/after-visiting-douma-western-media-begin-to-question-gas-attack-narrative/#respond Tue, 17 Apr 2018 19:51:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/after-visiting-douma-western-media-begin-to-question-gas-attack-narrative/ After speaking with eyewitnesses on the ground in Syria, even mainstream media are beginning to cast doubt on the West’s narrative of an alleged gas attack in Douma, as medics tell French, German and UK media it never happened.

Agence France-Presse (AFP), the world’s third largest news agency, and the Independent, a British online newspaper, have each published stories that question whether chlorine or any other chemical was used against Syrians in Eastern Ghouta on April 7.

In a French language video report, AFP spoke with Marwan Jaber, a medical student who witnessed the aftermath of the alleged attack.

“Some of [the victims] suffered from asthma and pulmonary inflammation. They received routine treatment and some were even sent home,” Jaber told AFP. “They showed no symptoms of a chemical attack. But some foreigners entered while we were in a state of chaos and sprinkled people with water, and some of them were even filming it.”

Jaber’s testimony is consistent with claims made by a Douma doctor who spoke with veteran UK journalist Robert Fisk. Although Dr. Assim Rahaibani did not personally witness what happened in the medical clinic, he said that “all the doctors” he works with “know what happened.”

According to Rahaibani, intense shelling had created dust clouds that seeped into the basements and cellars where people lived. “People began to arrive here suffering from hypoxia, oxygen loss. Then someone at the door, a ‘White Helmet’, shouted ‘Gas!’, and a panic began. People started throwing water over each other. Yes, the video was filmed here, it is genuine, but what you see are people suffering from hypoxia – not gas poisoning.”

Writing in the Independent, Fisk noted that locals he spoke with “never believed in” the gas attack stories – and that tales of President Bashar Assad’s chemical atrocities had been spread by armed Islamist groups who had imprisoned and enslaved thousands of people in Ghouta before the town was liberated by Syrian forces in April.

Meanwhile, a report aired by the German RTL Group-owned channel n-tv says it’s unclear whether the attack took place at all, given that most of the locals told them on camera they didn’t smell any chemicals at all, one local told them he remembers a “weird smell” and was fine after a glass of water, and one man, who didn’t want to show his face, insisted there was a “smell of chlorine.”

However, a local doctor told the channel: “Saturday, a week ago, we treated people with breathing problems, but chlorine or gas poisoning – no, those are different symptoms.”

All of these stories published by different outlets corroborate testimony from two men who appeared in the “gas attack” footage spread far and wide by western media and governments. Interviewed by the Russian military, the two men said they were unknowing accomplices in the gas attack ruse. “We were working and did not pay attention to who was filming us,” the first eyewitness said. “They were filming us, and then a man came in and started screaming that this was a chemical attack…People got scared and started spraying each other with water and using inhalers. Doctors told us that there was no chemical poisoning.”

Doctors and medical workers questioned by the Russian Center for Reconciliation confirmed that there had been no reports of patients suffering from chemical poisoning in Douma during the timeframe of the alleged gas attack.

The French and British media reports seem to contradict statements made by Paris and London, which have both stated unequivocally that the chemical attack did take place – and that Assad was responsible.

French President Emmanuel Macron said before Saturday’s missile strike against Syria that he had proof that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had used chlorine to attack civilians in a militant-held enclave of Eastern Ghouta.

For her part, British Prime Minister Theresa May insisted that a “significant body of information including intelligence indicates the Syrian Regime is responsible for this latest attack.”

Dementia news: Calls for open visiting hours for hospital patients https://briefnews.eu/dementia-news-calls-for-open-visiting-hours-for-hospital-patients-2/ https://briefnews.eu/dementia-news-calls-for-open-visiting-hours-for-hospital-patients-2/#respond Tue, 20 Mar 2018 00:53:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dementia-news-calls-for-open-visiting-hours-for-hospital-patients-2/

The call from the National Federation of Women’s Institutes (NFWI) comes after its latest report, which concluded that dementia patients are “suffering unnecessarily” while being cared for in hospitals across England and Wales.

A survey of 250 dementia carers found that just 38 per cent said they were able to visit their loved one outside of normal visiting hours.

Only a quarter (26 per cent) said they were given unrestricted access.

In its report, the NFWI said that a number of hospitals have extended their visiting hours and introduced measures to improve support for carers.

But it called for all hospital providers in England and local health boards in Wales to make it easier for carers to stay with their loved one outside of visiting hours.

The NFWI also urged health officials to roll out a “carer passport” scheme across every hospital.

The report’s authors added that such schemes should offer flexible or open visiting hours, enabling carers to assist at mealtimes.

The poll also found that 37 per cent of dementia patients were reported to have lost weight, 27 per cent became dehydrated and 15 per cent became malnourished while in hospital.

Lynne Stubbings, NFWI chairwoman, said: “These deeply concerning findings show an urgent need for further action.

“Too many carers are experiencing their loved ones suffering unnecessarily as a result of poor dementia care and a lack of willingness on the part of hospital staff to engage with them.”

Gavin Terry, policy manager at the Alzheimer’s Society, said: “Poor hospital care can have devastating consequences for someone with dementia – often staying longer in hospital than people without dementia.

“We have heard of people with dementia falling in hospital and suffering serious injuries because they weren’t helped to the toilet, or starving because they couldn’t communicate they were hungry.”
