The US says it’s talking with North Korea ‘virtually every day,’ but they’re getting nowhere https://briefnews.eu/the-us-says-its-talking-with-north-korea-virtually-every-day-but-theyre-getting-nowhere/ https://briefnews.eu/the-us-says-its-talking-with-north-korea-virtually-every-day-but-theyre-getting-nowhere/#respond Fri, 10 Aug 2018 00:52:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-us-says-its-talking-with-north-korea-virtually-every-day-but-theyre-getting-nowhere/ Donald Trump Kim Jong UnREUTERS/Jonathan Ernst

  • The US and North Korea are in direct communication “virtually every day,” according to a US State Department spokeswoman.
  • Talks appear to have hit a roadblock as both sides are beginning to publicly express their frustration with each other.
  • The US is concerned about reports that North Korea is continuing to advance its weapons programs, while the North is irritated by the perpetuation of sanctions and limited US interest in a peace treaty to end the Korean War.

The US and North Korea are apparently in regular communication, engaging one another by phone, email, or message on an almost-daily basis even as both sides express frustration with the other.

“I can tell you we continue to have conversations virtually every day, every other day or so with the North Koreans,” US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert explained to reporters Thursday, “When I say ‘conversations,’ that can be by phone, that can be my message, that can be by email. We continue to have conversations with the government,” Nauert said.

  • Eight states announced on Monday that they were suing the Trump administration over giving the public access to blueprints for 3-D printed guns.
  • The guns do not have serial numbers, people printing them would not have to undergo background checks, and the weapons would virtually be untraceable.

Concern over the rise of 3-D-printed guns has hit a climax as eight states announced on Monday that they were suing the Trump administration for allowing the public to download blueprints for such products.

The move would allow the public access to working guns that can fire real bullets, potentially including AR-15 semi-automatic assault rifles.

Russia virtually booked their place in the last 16 after brushing aside Egypt at the Krestovsky Stadium in Saint Petersburg.

The visitors were buoyed by the return of talisman Mohamed Salah but failed to create anything of note in a dreary first half.

Russia went ahead inside two minutes of the resumption as Egypt defender Ahmed Fathy turned the ball into his own net.

Denis Cheryshev doubled the hosts’ advantage and took his tournament tally to three goals when slotting beyond El Shenawy with Artem Dzyuba killing the game just two minutes later.

Mohamed Salah scored from the penalty spot but it was too little too late for Egypt, who are on the brink of exiting the competition.

RUSSIA 3-1 EGYPT – FATHY (46), CHERYSHEV (58), DZYUBA (60), SALAH (73)

Russia XI: Akinfeev, Fernandes, Kutepov, Ignashevich, Zhirkov, Gazinskiy, Zobnin, Samedov, Golovin, Cheryshev, Dzyuba.

Egypt XI: Elshenaway, Fathy, Abdelshafy, Gabr, Hegazi, Elneny, Hamed, Salah, Elsaid, Treziguet, Mohsen.

RUSSIA 3-1 EGYPT

FT: Despite a total lack of optimism, Russia are heading to the last 16 having scored eight goals in their opening two games. Unbelievable really.

The Russian supporters are going crazy inside the stadium. Perhaps they know this is the best start of any host nation in the history of the World Cup.

Mohamed Salah clearly wasn’t fit and played within himself for large portions, but he knew that he had to try.

92: Terrific game-management from Russia. They are slowing things down with niggling fouls and keeping it in the corners. I think we’re done here.

90: Nearly. Very nearly. It’s some nice build-up play from Egypt with the ball eventually fining its way to Treziguet to drag wide. Four minutes of added time remaining.

89: Oh Mo! The Egyptian superstar nips in ahead of Kuzyaev but spoons it over.

86: Kahraba replaces Mohsen for Egypt, Kudryashov is on for Zhirkov for Russia. Time ticking away for Egypt and there’s no sign of revival.

84: Aleksandr Golovin squanders a chance to kill this once and for all. Roman Zobnin breaks free and squares it, but the free-kick hero dithers and Hegazi flattens him. Standard.

83: Egypt are throwing the kitchen sink now. They’ve got seven minutes plus stoppage time to keep their World Cup dreams alive. No clear-cut chances yet as Russia hunker down.

80: Dzyuba goes off to a standing-ovation with Smolov replacing him for the closing stages.

77: Second penalty appeal! I think BBC commentator got a little bit excited there with Kutepov and Mohsen involved in a spot of tug-of-war. No penalty.

RUSSIA 3-1 EGYPT

75: Mohamed Salah is the third different player to score for Egypt at the World Cup, after Abdelrahman Fawzi (1934) and Magdy Abed El Ghani (1990). That is also the 10th penalty of the tournament. Crazy.

RUSSIA 3-1 EGYPT – SALAH (PEN)

73: Hope? Mohamed Salah tucks away the penalty to reduce the deficit to two goals. It’s going to take a miracle to scrape a draw from here, but if anyone’s capable of making it happen…

PENALTY TO EGYPT

72: Mohamed Salah is brought down inside the box. But the referee awards a free-kick. It’s going to VAR… penalty is awarded. Oh the drama!

67: Come on then, who got Russia in the sweepstake and has started to feel a little bit more confident? I got Saudi Arabia…

64: Chance for Egypt to restore some pride as Mohamed Salah tees up Treziguet just outside the penalty area, but he’s sliced it wide.

RUSSIA 3-0 EGYPT – DZYUBA

61: Game, set and match. They can’t score five again, can they?

The home fans can barely believe it as Artem Dzyuba calmly slots in number three from a simple knock-down.

Russia have scored two more goals in this World Cup (8) than they had in their previous two World Cup tournaments combined (6 across 2002 and 2014).

RUSSIA 2-0 EGYPT – CHERYSHEV

58: And there’s the second to send the hoist nation into ecstasy and Mohamed Salah on the early flight back to Merseyside.

Denis Cheryshev scores his third of the tournament and draws level with Cristiano Ronaldo.

Full-back Fernandes collects Samedov’s sprayed pass and crosses for Cheryshev to place his close-range shot beyond El-Shenawy.

Russia vs Egypt: Live World Cup score, goals and updates

58: That would normally have been food and drink for Mohamed Salah. He pounces on a loose ball inside the Russia penalty area but can’t adjust his feet quickly enough and his effort his blocked.

55: Samedov sends two-consecutive corners into the six-yard box but Hegazi and Mohsen manages to turn them away. Critical moments for the visitors.

53: That really has knocked the stuffing out of Egypt. They’ve barely had a touch since the breakthrough with Russia now looking to press their advantage home.

50: There have been five own goals at World Cup 2018 – only in 1998 have there been more at a World Cup tournament (6). Whoops.

49: That was pretty cruel on Egypt, but it was a scrappy goal worthy of a match like this. You need a bit of luck at major tournaments and Russia have just received a large dollop.

RUSSIA 1-0 EGYPT – FATHY OG

46: Oh you’re joking? That’s quite possibly the most unfortunate own goal I’ve ever seen.

A speculative cross is sent into the area and Elshenaway decides to punch it clear instead of take a simple catch.

Ahmed Fathy attempts to deal with Zobnin’s shot under pressure from Dzyuba but can only turn the ball into his own net.

45: After a lovely few minutes spent re-watching England’s triumph last night, we’re back underway.

You’ll be pleased to hear that Cesc Fabregas said that he was pleased THIS England turned up and felt the referee was barmy not to award Harry Kane a couple of penalties.

I may have paraphrased that slightly. I don’t know if ‘barmy’ exists in the Spanish lexis.

Trish: Is Mohamed Salah playing for Egypt by any chance? Haven’t heard his name mentioned once…

Johnny: Mohamed Salah clearly isn’t match fit and he’s struggling to get into this game. You just can’t take him off though – what he can do with a ball, only a few other players are capable of doing.

Paul: Artem Dzyuba is being held during corners exactly the same way Harry Kane was last night.

Great shout, Paul. I was about to mention that but you beat me to it…

RUSSIA 0-0 EGYPT

HT: Zero seconds of added time in Saint Petersburg, but that’s probably for the best.

It’s not been a classic with both sides firing just one shot on target. It’s even, gritty and hopefully going to liven up in the second half.

44: Great improvisation from Mohamed Salah. He loses control of the ball but that actually makes Zhirkov more confused and the Egyptian star swivels and fires wide.

41: From one Arsenal player to another as Mohamed Elneny sends a wonderful cross over to Mohsen, who doesn’t attack the ball. Waste.

38: I know it’s got nothing to do with tonight’s match but I thought that I would let you know that Bayer Leverkusen have confirmed that Bernd Leno is officially an Arsenal player.

35: The corner comes to nothing with striker Mohsen flicking it wide at the near post.

33: Signs of life from Egypt. Abdel-Shafy looks to loop one over the static Russian defence but Zhirkov gets in narrowly ahead of Salah. It’s a corner.

RUSSIA 0-0 EGYPT

30: The game is drifting a little bit at the moment. Russia’s pressing game is hurrying Egypt into mistakes but they’ve not been able to capitalise. It’s a bit flat.

27: Russia are exploiting the left flank with Mohamed Salah under orders NOT to track back. Cheryshev wanders into acres of space before Hegazi and goalkeeper Elshenaway get in a muddle. It’s eventually hooked away.

24: Gazinsky’s cross just alludes Dzyuba and Fernandes fails to beat the first man with his cross from the opposite flank.

TWITTER ROUND-UP

Jonny: I really do like this Trezeguet kid. Bags of potential, seriously. Cuper needs to be adventurous in this game and look to his flair players like Mohamed Salah and Trezeguet to express themselves with the ball.

Andy: You’ve had a hard day’s work and you turn in the football only to hear the voice of Jonathan Pearce on the football.

Chris: Love open attacking games like this, both teams realise that, given the last group fixture, the winner is highly likely to go through second behind Uruguay.

RUSSIA 0-0 EGYPT

20: Zhirkov’s free-kick is cleared straight to Cheryshev, who looks to add another to his series of scorchers. His snapshot flies over.

18: Close! Treziguet drives down the left flank before cutting inside and trying a Thierry Henry-esque curl into the far corner.

15: Salah must be seeing my updates. The Egyptian shows his first flashes of brilliance to win a corner, but one of the several Russian giants scramble it clear. Better spell from the visitors.

12: Not seen a great deal from Egypt, and that means Mohamed Salah has been pretty quiet. All the talk was about the Liverpool star ahead of this one, but it’s Aleksandr Golovin who’s turning heads. Samedov clips it over to Dzyuba, who hooks it wide. He actually did pretty well to even reach it.

9: It didn’t take long to get Arsenal transfer target Aleksandr Golovin involved. Fresh from his goal and two assists in the opener against Saudi Arabia, he drags a blistering effort wide.

RUSSIA 0-0 EGYPT

6: The decision to start giant Artem Dzyuba is a fairly obvious one for Russia this evening. He’s massive and Egypt struggle to defend crosses. Simple.

Russia aren’t throwing numbers forward. They are sitting deep and allowing the visitors plenty of possession. I would imagine that’s to prevent any counter-attacks involving Mr Salah.

3: Two reasons why you should stick with my LIVE updates today. The first is that there are a ridiculous number of Vuvuzela’s in the stadium tonight.

And the second is that Danny Murphy and Jonathan Pearce are together in the commentary box.

1: And we’re off! It’s pretty much all or nothing for Egypt tonight. They need to collect points against the host to stand a chance of progressing.

CORRRRRRR

18:57: Egypt with the loudest national anthem I’ve heard this tournament. There’s also a few thousand wearing Pharaoh costumes on what is a very chilly evening in St Petersburg.

Cancel my previous statement, the Russians just belted out their national anthem. Spine-tingling stuff.

PRESSURE

18:54: You would be forgiven for thinking that it’s a Mohamed Salah concert rather than a football match involving two teams and 21 other players. The Liverpool star has a ridiculous amount of pressure on his shoulders tonight.

The players are just emerging from the tunnel now. Plenty of noise inside the stadium.

PERMUTATIONS

18:50: The second round brings with it that terrible word again. Permutations. I don’t think I’ve ever used that word in any other scenario.

Egypt and Russia won’t progress or be eliminated tonight. They will have to wait until tomorrow’s clash between Uruguay and Saudi Arabia.

But honestly, a Uruguay draw or win tomorrow would guarantee Egypt’s tournament is over.

75% FIT…

18:45: The BBC’s coverage is underway with Alan Shearer and Cesc Fabregas in the studio alongside Gary Lineker.

Shearer is delighted to see Salah return and thinks the Liverpool star is worth risking even if he’s 75 percent fit.

“I’m absolutely delighted to see Mo Salah included with the season he’s had. Even if he was 75% fit it was a gamble they had to take,” Shearer said. “Russia lack pace so that’s probably one of the reasons he’s playing and they’ll look to exploit it.”

He’s not wrong about pace. I think the Russian centre-backs boast a combined age of 378…

PREDICTOR…

18:40: It wouldn’t be a World Cup if there wasn’t a psychic animal doing the rounds.

We’ve seen the psychic sausage dog, Paul the Octopus and now it’s time for Achilles the cat, who was given the options with two bowls of food containing the Russia and Egypt flags.

He tucked into the Russia bowl first, but then helped himself to the Egypt bowl. You make sense of that!

Maggie: After the way these past two games have gone today, I’m not placing any bets on this game between Russia and Egypt.

Lewis: This world cup has seen a new low for the standard of refereeing. VAR was supposed to fill gaps in the ability of referee’s, but instead it’s given them an excuse to give up completely.

Rosh: A loss here will put Egypt out of this World Cup. Mohamed Salah’s return is a massive boost, but I think Russia will have enough.

I think that’s a wise decision, Maggie.

SALAH? NO PROBLEM

18:20: That’s according to confident Russia coach Stanislav Cherchesov, who thinks he can do what no Premier League side could achieve last season. Stop Mohamed Salah.

“We know how to play against him. We are ready to stop Salah and we will,” Cherchesov said. “Of course Mo Salah is the strongest one of the team, we understand this, but we are not playing against one player, we have to take into consideration all the players.

“We understand how to do this and you will see this. What can I say? I trust in my team, I believe in my players and I will give you a simple answer to your question: we are ready to do this and we will do this.”

WHO NEEDS SALAH?!

18:15: So it turns out that Mohamed Salah is not Egypt’s most threatening attacker…

I’ll allow that to sink in for a while.

Bookmakers have crunched the numbers and It turns out that Al-Ittihad Club winger Kahraba contributes more expected goals per 90 minutes than the Liverpool forward for his country.

The two Egyptian attackers match for conversion rate, though, scoring 33.3% of their chances, which is more than any of their teammates.

This conversion rate is also higher than any of Russia’s attackers, suggesting the Egyptians will be the more clinical side this evening

ONE ABSENTEE…

18:05: Don’t worry, I’m not talking about a late injury to Mohamed Salah.

I’m actually referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who won’t be available for tonight’s showdown.

He’s not in the stands because he’s busy in Minsk for talks with Alexander Lukashenko. Quite what these talks are about I don’t know, nor do I wish to find out.

It looks like one or both of Colombia and Poland will not reach the last 16 having both suffered defeats this afternoon.

Japan beat Colombia, who were down to 10-men after just three minutes, 2-1 thanks to goals from Shinji Kagawa and Yuya Osako.

And Senegal have just done a number on Robert Lewandowski’s Poland.

THE LINE-UPS

17:45: And here are tonight’s line-ups. We have two changes for Russia with grace hero Cheryshev replacing injured Dzagoev, while Dzyuba is preferred to Smolov in attack.

Russia XI: Akinfeev, Fernandes, Kutepov, Ignashevich, Zhirkov, Gazinskiy, Zobnin, Samedov, Golovin, Cheryshev, Dzyuba.

I don’t remember seeing him crack a smile at any point, but I assume he’s pleased because he personally called head coach Stanislav Cherchesov during his post-match press conference, and told him to congratulate the players.

Hate to think what happens if they lose 5-0 tonight…

ROUND TWO…

17:35: I can’t believe that we’ve only just completed the first round of fixtures. Well, Poland vs Senegal is still being played as I type this, but It looks like the African national will collect maximum points. It’s 2-0.

'Western intel on Douma incident virtually non-existent, no ground sources' – ex-CIA agent Kiriakou https://briefnews.eu/western-intel-on-douma-incident-virtually-non-existent-no-ground-sources-ex-cia-agent-kiriakou/ https://briefnews.eu/western-intel-on-douma-incident-virtually-non-existent-no-ground-sources-ex-cia-agent-kiriakou/#respond Fri, 13 Apr 2018 02:11:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/western-intel-on-douma-incident-virtually-non-existent-no-ground-sources-ex-cia-agent-kiriakou/ The US and its allies’ allegations of a chemical attack by Syrian government forces near Damascus are based on speculation since the US doesn’t have any intelligence assets on the ground, former CIA analyst John Kiriakou told RT.

“On the ground the intelligence is non-existent, we don’t have an embassy there anymore, we don’t have any kind of official or formal presence there anymore, and… what the military collects remotely can only go so far,” Kiriakou, a former CIA officer-turned whistleblower, told RT.

The Pentagon earlier implied that it has some intelligence on hand, including of its own, which it has to look into before a final decision on Syria can be made. “We’re still assessing the intelligence — ourselves and our allies,” US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Wednesday.

A plane taking off from USS Harry S. Truman, which has been deployed to the eastern Mediterranean ahead of a possible strike on Syria.

Kiriakou doubts that any of the countries that have leveled accusations against Syria possess any clear intelligence. For instance, British PM Theresa May, he said, chose to use reservations, saying, “all indications point to” the Syrian government culpability instead of explicitly attributing the blame to Damascus.

“That tells me that there is no intelligence that says: this is what happened, this is who did it.”

At an urgent meeting of the British Cabinet on Thursday, the ministers also appeared to leave room for error, stating that it was “highly likely” that the Syrian government was to blame.

“Unless you already have people on the ground who are reporting back and who you’ve cultivated over the course of years you are not going to get information,” the former CIA agent explained, adding that it will be even harder, if not outright impossible, to find out who was behind the alleged incident in a post-factum investigation.

“It could be easy to determine that chlorine was used, or something else was used, it’s going to be virtually impossible to find out who did it,” he said.

A potential assault on Syria, an independent country, by the US cannot be justified under international law, Kiriakou said.

“A response by us would be clearly a violation of the United Nations charter, which makes it a war crime,” he said, noting that the US neither has the permit from the UN Security Council nor from the “legitimate internationally recognized government of Syria to attack their property, their land.”

It is “a big guessing game” what happens in Syria next, Kiriakou said. There is, however, a plan for de-escalation if tensions over Syria with Russia and Iran reach a boiling point, he believes.

“Plan B, I think, is backing off. It’s declaring victory and going home,” Kiriakou said, adding that it is not the US military but, ironically, the US diplomats who are pulling the world dangerously close to an all-out war.

“When I was at the CIA, one thing that was very clear to me was that it was the military that was least excited to use force. It was the State Department, that always wanted to attack, attack, attack.”

With Bush-era war hawk John Bolton now advising the president on matters of national security, this scenario has all the chances to become reality, Kiriakou said.

“Now that John Bolton is a National Security Adviser, we have a real problem with the willingness in this White House to use force,” he said.

Were it solely up to the generals to decide on using the military option, “there would not be any of that,” Kiriakou said. But with Bolton calling shots, the US risks entrenching in Syria and going far beyond a single major strike, as it was in the case of the US missile attack on Syria’s Shayrat Airbase last year.

“I fear that we’re going to go deeper, far deeper this time than we did a year ago. This isn’t going to be a pinprick strike if we finally decide to move in.”

‘Yakuza 6’ makes Tokyo’s red-light district virtually real https://briefnews.eu/yakuza-6-makes-tokyos-red-light-district-virtually-real/ https://briefnews.eu/yakuza-6-makes-tokyos-red-light-district-virtually-real/#respond Thu, 15 Mar 2018 12:16:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/yakuza-6-makes-tokyos-red-light-district-virtually-real/

I’m a relatively late fan of Sega’s famed Yakuza franchise. It was the 2015 ‘prequel’, Yakuza 0 on the PS4, that got me hooked: it was the series’ first title to be localized in Chinese, which helped me understand its rich storyline on the humble beginnings of series protagonist, Kazuma Kiryu, and his strangely charming acquaintance, Goro Majima.

What also fascinated me about these open-world games was how most of it was based on Tokyo’s Kabukicho and Osaka’s Dotonbori, often with incredible attention to detail.

For Yakuza 6: The Song of Life due on April 17th, the game is once again set in the Kabukicho-like Kamurocho, with a second stage set in a part of Hiroshima. I’ve yet to make it to Hiroshima in real life, but during one of my recent trips to Tokyo, I decided to swing by Shinjuku to see how closely Sega’s realization stands up. With very real restaurants, hotels and attractions digitized in high-detail, it’s occasionally uncanny.

This neighbornood is pretty much where the main story line starts for each game in the series. The signage for this Kamurocho Tenkaichi Street shares a familiar design with the real one for Kabukicho Ichibangai in Shinjuku, Tokyo. Note the barrage of signs, lighting tiny windows and scattered traffic cones and bikes. The latter two might double as weapons, but Tokyo IRL has ’em everywhere too.

Here’s Kamurocho Tenkaichi Street (or Kabukicho Ichibangai) as viewed from the other side. You can see the same lamp post design in both worlds, and even spot the fictional Shokichi Camera electronics store across the road in the far end, which is actually a Labi — also an electronics chain — in real life. Even though Labi is missing out on this marketing opportunity, the Yakuza team still applied a similar design to the fake store logo, possibly just for giggles.

Don Quijote aka Donki is a well-known discount chain store in Japan, and it’s been featured in the Yakuza series since its first release (and it started selling the games as well since the second instalment). Think Pikachu onesies, rice cookers, bikes, headphones, matcha-flavored Kit-Kats and sex toys, all in one place. Part of the store layout here in the game was surprisingly similar to what I saw in real life, though the game only offers one floor to explore. The Yakuza series isn’t the only game franchise to replicate Tokyo in detail: Persona 5 somehow managed to recreate the chaos of Shibuya, train station and all, faithfully. It didn’t however, have the brand clout that Yakuza apparently wields.

Real Japanese eateries such as Sushi Zanmai and Cafe Pronto are dotted around the game as well, though you might not find them at the same locations in the real world. Kiryu can also get a membership at fitness chain, Rizap, in order to boost his various stats — and gets his own “before” and “after” montage in the process.

It’s also worth pointing out that you can buy items that exist in real life, mainly beverages (Suntory is also a long-time collaborator since the first release) and medicines. Kiryu even uses a Sony Xperia XZ, which is a nice upgrade from his old featurephone — at least he can take selfies now.

Another iconic brand dotted around the game is Karaoke Kan, which has been featured since Yakuza 3. Again, the similarity is very impressive, to say the least. You can actually walk in and play a karaoke-themed game to let Kiryu practise his deep voice.

The fictional Nakamichi Street also closely resembles the real Kabuki Central Road. You can see certain building design elements kept in the digital world.

Alas, Japanese convenience store FamilyMart didn’t participate in the tie-in, but the game still placed a fictional Poppo store in the same spot here at one end of Pink Street. Speaking of, Yakuza 6 is the first title in the series that lets you walk seamlessly into and out of stores and restaurants. Just try not to bring your fights into those establishments, they don’t like that. (Although there’s a special move that involves the shop assistant helping beat the thugs with a microwave — really.)

Yakuza 6’s Kamurocho has a fancy Kamuro Theater complex in the middle, which parrots Kabukicho’s Shinjuku Toho Building, a site most famous for its massive Godzilla head that roars and spits steam nine times a day. The inside, however, is less interesting than the real deal.

Here’s the side of Kamuro Theater / Shinjuku Toho Building facing Nakamichi Street / Kabuki Central Road. Again, note how the game has preserved some of the building designs plus signage layouts. The size and scale is spot-on.

The APA Hotel in the game is a tad bigger than the one in real life (which is right by VR Zone Shinjuku, by the way), but it’s otherwise an impressive copy that’s hard to miss.

Last but not least, here’s a snapshot of the fictional East Shichifuku Street, which features a near-identical outdoor car park with familiar-looking billboards promoting nearby… venues. Having had many strangers approaching me to solicit “business” there in the real world, I much prefer the quieter street in the game.

Thanks to the simultaneous Chinese launches in Hong Kong, where I’m based, I picked up Yakuza 6 well ahead of the Western launch, which is now penned for mid-April. That’s OK, because the localization is well worth the wait for such a story-heavy series; you definitely won’t want to skip the emotional cinematics — or the appearance of Beat Takeshi.

Thomas Lemar to Liverpool virtually ‘AGREED’ – big claims from France over summer transfer https://briefnews.eu/thomas-lemar-to-liverpool-virtually-agreed-big-claims-from-france-over-summer-transfer/ https://briefnews.eu/thomas-lemar-to-liverpool-virtually-agreed-big-claims-from-france-over-summer-transfer/#respond Wed, 07 Mar 2018 04:58:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/thomas-lemar-to-liverpool-virtually-agreed-big-claims-from-france-over-summer-transfer/

The Merseyside outfit were previously linked with for the 22-year-old last summer but were priced out of a move when Arsenal lodged a huge £92million bid in the final hours of the transfer window.

A deal never materialised with too many pieces needing to be moved in a little amount of time but Lemar is expected to be heading out the door of Monaco in a few months.

Both Arsenal and Liverpool are the leading candidates for his signature.

Jurgen Klopp is still on the lookout for Philippe Coutinho’s replacement after his £142million move to Barcelona in January.

Lemar would undoubtedly further improve Liverpool’s already potent attacking options.

And it looks as though they have made serious ground on pushing through a deal ahead of the Gunners.

That’s according to French outlet Le10 Sport, who claim Liverpool are on the verge of agreeing a fee with Monaco.

The Ligue 1 giants are said to be willing to offload the France international in the summer and Liverpool have made progress with negotiations in recent weeks.

All that is left for Liverpool to do is reportedly agree terms with Lemar and past speculation suggests that shouldn’t prove difficult as he is said to prefer a move to Anfield.

The French winger played a crucial part in Monaco’s title-winning campaign last season, scoring nine goals and providing 11 assists.

The departures of Kylian Mbappe, Benjamin Mendy, Bernardo Silva and Tiemoue Bakayoko have hit Monaco hard this season with Paris Saint-Germain running away with the title.

But they remain second in the league in large part due to Radamel Falcao’s return of 17 goals.

Steam January hardware survey: Oculus Rift and HTC Vive virtually tied for VR headsets https://briefnews.eu/steam-january-hardware-survey-oculus-rift-and-htc-vive-virtually-tied-for-vr-headsets/ https://briefnews.eu/steam-january-hardware-survey-oculus-rift-and-htc-vive-virtually-tied-for-vr-headsets/#respond Sat, 03 Feb 2018 12:01:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/steam-january-hardware-survey-oculus-rift-and-htc-vive-virtually-tied-for-vr-headsets/

The first Steam hardware survey of 2018 is in, and it shows Oculus Rift and HTC Vive use at practically a tie.

This month sees HTC Vive as 46.96% (a 0.3% decrease from last month’s 47.26%) of the overall usage, while Rift is at 46.09% (a 0.05% decrease from 46.14% in December). Steam designates HTC Vive at this month’s most-used headset after the Rift took the top spot for the first time in December. That said, this chart shows that Rift and Vive usage on Steam is almost neck-and-neck right now.

Explaining the slight drops on both the Rift and Vive’s side, Microsoft’s Windows ‘Mixed Reality’ headsets grew from 4.35% to 5.17%. As always, this is an optional survey and headsets have to be plugged into Steam when it takes place to count, so it’s not a definitive way of telling whether the Rift or Vive has sold more.

Now that we’re a month into 2018 we have a bit of a better idea of what the VR landscape looks like for the year. Most notably, HTC is set to release its upgraded Vive, the Vive Pro, as a single headset within the next two months and then as a full package with new trackers later in the year. Will the upgraded specs help Vive get ahead in the survey?

Virtually Certain To Pass https://briefnews.eu/virtually-certain-to-pass/ https://briefnews.eu/virtually-certain-to-pass/#respond Sat, 16 Dec 2017 13:12:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/virtually-certain-to-pass/

The Republican tax bill, which would overhaul the tax system to vastly reduce the tax rates paid by corporations permanently and temporarily cut taxes for many normal taxpayers, has reached its final form, with the House and Senate agreeing on a bill that they plan to vote on next week.

The conference bill that came out of negotiations between the two chambers is broadly similar to the legislation that passed the Senate at the beginning of the month. Two of the most significant changes from either original bill are the income tax rates paid by wealthy individuals and how generous the child tax credit is.

The original House bill reduced the current seven income tax brackets to four, with the top rate staying at 39.6%, while the bill passed by the Senate cut the top rate to 38.5%. The conference bill slashes the top rate to 37% and has that rate kick in at $ 600,000 for joint filers and $ 500,000 for single filers, compared to the current cutoff at a bit over $ 400,000 for single filers and $ 480,000 for joint filers.

The combined bill also puts the corporate tax rate at 21%, while the first House and Senate legislation put it at 20%, down from the 35% rate today.

Many of the controversial provisions in the House bill, like eliminating the tax credit for adoptive parents or getting rid of the ability of graduate students to waive their tuition from their taxable income, were stripped out of the conference bill.

And after a brief scare for leadership this week, the bill is now virtually certain to pass the Senate, after getting 51 of 52 possible Republican votes and no Democrats to support it the first time.

On Thursday, Sens. Marco Rubio and Mike Lee said there were respectively opposed to or undecided on the bill if it didn’t include a more generous child tax credit for low-earning parents.

To address those concerns, the new bill includes the original Senate bill’s boost of the tax credit per child up to $ 2,000, but it makes $ 1,400 of that “refundable,” meaning it gets paid to parents even if they have no income tax liability. The original Senate bill made only $ 1,100 of the credit refundable.

Rubio, in response, declared his support for the bill Friday, and Lee’s spokesman said that the senator would “hopefully” support the bill and was encouraged by the work done in the conference to beef up the child tax credit.

Another key senator, Bob Corker, the only Republican to oppose the original Senate bill, also said Friday he would vote for the compromise version. Corker voted against the original bill because he was concerned over how much it would add to the deficit, and he did not say if the new bill specifically changed to address those concerns.

Sens. Susan Collins and Jeff Flake, who both supported the first bill in the Senate, have not yet said how they will vote on the combined bill. They could both oppose it however, and the bill could still pass with Vice President Mike Pence casting a tie-breaking vote.

You can now virtually ‘hike’ all of South Africa’s National Parks https://briefnews.eu/you-can-now-virtually-hike-all-of-south-africas-national-parks/ https://briefnews.eu/you-can-now-virtually-hike-all-of-south-africas-national-parks/#respond Fri, 17 Nov 2017 00:26:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/you-can-now-virtually-hike-all-of-south-africas-national-parks/

Technology and adventure collide in a new initiative that showcases South Africa’s natural, historical and cultural marvels in perfectly digitized form.

Over 200 South African outdoor enthusiasts have pulled together to help make South Africa’s 19 National Parks, 17 nature reserves and six UNESCO World Heritage Sites available to virtually explore via Google Street View.

The impressive collection of 360-degree imagery—which includes the likes of Mapungubwe Hill and the Drakensberg Mountains—was gathered with the help of Google’s Trekker camera (affectionately known as ‘Gary’) which is available to loan as part of Google’s Street View Camera Loan program.

Thanks to the ‘South Africa in 360’ project, eager Street-Viewers may also digitally access a range of South Africa’s culturally and historically significant sites, such as the spot where Nelson Mandela was captured. Over the course of 12 months, some 170 new trails and 232 points of interest were recorded, and 560 miles were hiked. Viewers may also virtually hike the five-day Otter Trail, walk with elephants and track cheetah on foot.

The Trekker itself weighs just under 50lbs, is made up of 15 individual cameras (pointing in all directions) and can be worn like a backpack—which makes it the perfect tool for gathering imagery from the hiking trails of the world. All a user needs to do is strap it up, turn it on, and get hiking.  “This is how we do tourism,” said Sisa Ntshona, CEO of South African Tourism.

South Africa in 360 is the brainchild of Drive South Africa—a Cape Town-based rental car resource—who wanted to help showcase South Africa as a tourist destination to the rest of the world. (As if we needed any more persuading.) “For the first time, travellers and wildlife lovers from across the globe can explore the full spectrum of South Africa’s diverse wilderness areas on Google Maps and Street View,” said Andre Van Kets, Drive South Africa founder.

South Africa’s natural, cultural and historical marvels now join the likes of the Faroe Islands, the International Space Station, Petra, the Galapagos Islands, Everest Base Camp, Machu Picchu and the Great Walks of New Zealand—all of which are already on Google Street View (alongside a whole host of other destinations) for would-be travelers to explore.
