An international team of scientists used CT scanning to conduct “virtual autopsies” of three South American mummies and found evidence of fatal trauma in two of them, according to a recent paper published in the journal Frontiers in Medicine. One of the mummies had clearly been hit on the head and stabbed, possibly by two assailants, while the other showed signs of massive cervical spine trauma. The third female mummy also showed signs of trauma, but the damage was inflicted post-mortem. The study is part of ongoing efforts to determine the frequency of violence in prehistoric human societies.

According to the authors, there is a large database of ancient Egyptian mummies and skeletons that show signs of having suffered a traumatic injury, but there is far less data for South American mummies, many of which formed naturally and are exceptionally well-preserved. Nonetheless, evidence of fatal trauma has been reported previously in a few cases, such as a pre-Columbian skull from the Nasca region showing rational trauma to the cervical spine and accompanying soft tissue bleeding into the skull. An almost complete female mummy showed signs of facial bone fractures consistent with massive strikes from a weapon, as did the skull of a mummified male infant.

An extensive 1993 survey used conventional X-rays to analyze 63 mummies and mummy fragments, 11 of which showed signs of trauma to the skull. But those mummies came from different locations, populations, and time periods, making it difficult to draw general conclusions from the findings. Last year, researchers looked for signs of violence in the remains of 194 adults buried between 2,800 and 1,400 years ago in the Atacama desert of northern Chile, 40 of which appeared to have been the victims of brutal violence.

For years, Scott Lear tried to convince B.C.’s health authorities to adopt a virtual cardiac rehab program he developed for patients recovering from conditions like heart attacks. But when the pandemic hit, he says it took just two weeks to get it going.

MacGyver’s Lucas Till Receives Virtual Hug From Co-Star in Wake of EP Exposé https://briefnews.eu/macgyvers-lucas-till-receives-virtual-hug-from-co-star-in-wake-of-ep-expose/ https://briefnews.eu/macgyvers-lucas-till-receives-virtual-hug-from-co-star-in-wake-of-ep-expose/#respond Wed, 22 Jul 2020 05:15:56 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/macgyvers-lucas-till-receives-virtual-hug-from-co-star-in-wake-of-ep-expose/

One of Lucas Till‘s MacGyver colleagues is sending the actor a virtual hug after he took a very public stand against their embattled former boss.

Meredith Eaton, who plays Matilda “Matty” Webber on the CBS procedural, tweeted a photo late Monday of her and Till’s characters sharing a warm embrace. The gesture came just hours after Vanity Fair published an explosive story about fired showrunner Peter M. Lenkov in which Till — who plays the titular role — alleged that he endured numerous instances of verbal abuse, bullying, and body-shaming while working alongside the EP.

Included in the Vanity Fair piece was an excerpt of a note Till had sent to CBS’ HR department that claimed Lenkov pressured Eaton to return to work following an injury (an allegation Lenkov denies). “Meredith suffered an injury on set that was not dealt with properly… and had to get a hip replacement surgery and in-home care to recover fast enough to return to work the next season,” Till wrote. “Peter would frantically email and call her insisting on knowing when she would be able to walk at a fast pace again.”

In that same letter, Till accused Lenkov of body-shaming him, writing, “There was always something about my appearance that wouldn’t please him, like when I was in a hospital gown…. [Lenkov] said my legs were ‘f–king hideous’ and we can never show them again. Honestly, I found some humor in that comment as well, but you can imagine if that was a more sensitive spot that he had hit, and often did. Just like the time he screamed at [a director] ’Oh, my f–king God! Tuck his shirt in, he looks like a little f–king boy’… I’ve struggled with maintaining ‘man weight’ on the show because of the stress, no time to work out, and an unpredictable schedule for proper nourishment.”

A rep for Lenkov called Till’s accusations “100 percent false and untrue,” adding that the EP “has championed him from the very beginning and has been nothing but supportive of him.”

On July 7, CBS TV Studios announced that it had fired Lenkov, who also oversaw CBS’ Magnum P.I. reboot as well as the network’s now-concluded remake of Hawaii Five-0. In a statement following his dismissal, Lenkov said, “Now is the time to listen and I am listening. It’s difficult to hear that the working environment I ran was not the working environment my colleagues deserved, and for that, I am deeply sorry. I accept responsibility for what I am hearing and am committed to doing the work that is required to do better and be better.”

Drag Race Recap: Season 12 Queens Shade Sherry Pie in Virtual Reunion https://briefnews.eu/drag-race-recap-season-12-queens-shade-sherry-pie-in-virtual-reunion/ https://briefnews.eu/drag-race-recap-season-12-queens-shade-sherry-pie-in-virtual-reunion/#respond Sat, 23 May 2020 03:00:51 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/drag-race-recap-season-12-queens-shade-sherry-pie-in-virtual-reunion/

Drag Race‘s dirty dozen came together for a virtual reunion on Friday, and while they didn’t directly address the biggest scandal of Season 12, the queens still served a few slices of shady pie.

Crystal Methyd, Gigi Goode, Jaida Essence Hall, Jackie Cox, Heidi N Closet, Widow Von’Du, Jan, Brita, Aiden Zhane, Nicky Doll, Rock M. Sakura and Dahlia Sin kicked things off with a group number, “The Shady Bunch,” led by… oh, like I even need to say. “We were 13 queens competing all together,” they sang, followed by a record-scratch moment, courtesy of Ms. Jaida: “Well, technically only 12.”

The second indirect reference to Sherry Pie came during the too-brief reading segment, with Brita delivering this surprisingly savage line to Dahlia: “You sure do talk a big game for someone who came in 13th place on a 12-person season!”

Keep scrolling for a recap of the biggest make-ups, throw-downs and Ru-velations from the 90-minute therapy session, led by a mysterious luchador with a striking resemblance to RuPaul:

HEIDI MAKES GOODE | The first uncomfortable Season 12 moment addressed (directly) in the reunion was Heidi and Gigi’s awkward exchange after the Frozen-themed runway challenge. “I completely regret the way that it came out,” Gigi said. “It was meant to be constructive. It definitely came out really wrong, but in the moment, I just wanted you to excel in the areas that others wanted you to excel in. … The most important thing is, look at you now. You’ve [had] such a glow-up. Look at you now!” Not that this was much of a feud to squash, but Heidi “100-percent” accepted Gigi’s apology.

TRAPPED WITH ‘N CLOSET’ | As much as Heidi appreciates the many alternative names Ru came up for her during the season — from Heidi Aphrodite to Heidi Almighty —  she says her fans have dubbed themselves “Closet Cases,” so she’ll have to keep the “N Closet” in her name for a little while longer. The host’s Ru-sponse? “Well, just let me say that, um, that is… a mistake.”

DOLL’S NOT PLAYING | Remember when all of the queens said Nicky should be sent home, but rather than defend herself, she also picked herself? Yeah, she regrets that. “I feel very stupid now, because I feel like, rewatching the episode and watching it as a viewer, I should have backed up my role way more,” she said. “It’s a lot of emotions when you’re being named one after the other. I let the stress get the most of me.” And things got super awkward when Ru asked the queens if they regret choosing Nicky. Brita played it safe, saying “we all did an amazing job” and “we had to pick someone,” while Heidi straight up told Ru, “I said her name and I’d probably say it again.”

AIDEN, UNFILTERED | Though Aiden clarified that she didn’t consider the other queens’ treatment of her to have been “bullying,” she did acknowledge that she was “terrified” to compete this season, and that “fear is like blood to a shark.” The self-proclaimed “bedroom queen” also found herself defending the nap heard ’round the workroom, explaining, “It wasn’t a matter of me being lazy or me not giving a f–k.” She simply felt the garment was done. After Aiden called out Brita (“She came in with expectations of herself, and she felt she wasn’t living up to that”), Brita admitted that she let the competition get to her, adding that she didn’t like the person she saw while watching the season. She also tried to say that she loves Aiden “when it comes down to it,” but Widow called shenanigans immediately. And I can’t say she’s wrong.

DAHLIA’S ORIGINAL SIN | When asked why she angrily stormed off after being eliminated, Dahlia surprised the entire assemblage of queens by saying the could think of a few girls who deserved to be go home over her. In fact, she named them: “Crystal, I definitely thought you should have been in the bottom,” the Broc-ally declared. “Crystal, Nicky and Widow — the bottom.”

ROCK ON A ROLL | Speaking of emotional exits, Ru also had Rock walk the queens through her own tearful outburst. “When you called my name, I thought I was going to be in the top,” she sad. “So it was like a steady incline on a roller coaster, and it fell so hard.” Crystal called it “the hardest elimination” to watch because “you could hear her crying backstage and it broke all of our hearts.” Fortunately, Rock says she’s now a much more confident queen than she was during the competition.

TEARS OF A JAN | Dressed in a bathrobe patterned with that face, Jan admitted that her own emotional breakdown wasn’t entirely over her best friend Brita’s elimination. “When you said my name, I was like, ‘Here we go, this is it!’” Jan told Ru. “I definitely did cry and was upset about Brita leaving, but the girls were right. I was definitely more upset because I’m a singer, so If I didn’t win this challenge … why am I here?”

PAIR OF QUEENS | As for the rumors of a romantic relationship between Gigi and Crystal, the queens played relatively coy at the reunion. “Ru, you know just as well as I do that that mullet can really do something to ya,” Gigi said, to which Crystal added, “I think that there’s always a little bit of fact in the fiction.”

Drag Race Recap: Top 3 Ru-vealed! Who’s Going to the Virtual Finale? https://briefnews.eu/drag-race-recap-top-3-ru-vealed-whos-going-to-the-virtual-finale/ https://briefnews.eu/drag-race-recap-top-3-ru-vealed-whos-going-to-the-virtual-finale/#respond Sat, 16 May 2020 09:48:56 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/drag-race-recap-top-3-ru-vealed-whos-going-to-the-virtual-finale/

Between the absence of the traditional “Ru-mix” and the results of that extremely close lip-sync battle, we’re officially filing Friday’s episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race under “polarizing.”

Following Gigi Goode’s victory in the mini challenge, she and the other remaining queens — Jaida Essence Hall, Crystal Methyd, Jackie Cox and Sherry Pie — learned that, instead of putting their individual spins on a RuPaul jam, they’d be performing a medley of numbers from RuPaul’s Drag Race Live! (That’s right, folks. Just like that Frozen-inspired runway a few weeks back, we’re once again being advertised something we can’t buy tickets to. Here’s hoping Ru’s Las Vegas show fares better than Frozen, which announced plans to close just days ago!)

This being the final challenge of the season, the queens were determined to leave a lasting impression on the judges, especially Jackie, who hoped that showing her sexier side might result in her first win. She even compared herself to Yvie Oddly, who won Season 11 despite only winning one maxi challenge, but I’m… not sure I’d put them in the same category. At all. In fact, there were a few times this week where Jackie got way too into her head, like when she said that she and Crystal are “f–ed” if “report cards” are taken into consideration. “No, no, no, no, no,” Crystal corrected her. “I have shown that I am ever-changing and ever-growing.”

Then came the show, which I did not love. I was willing to accept that we weren’t getting a traditional Ru-mix, even though they’re always iconic, but the songs that we got tonight did nothing for me. The performances were all solid (Gigi’s vocals!), but I didn’t even know what I was watching half of the time. Maybe I’m in the minority here, but this wouldn’t have inspired me to buy tickets, even if I could. (That said, I’ll probably have “I’m Still That Bitch,” or whatever that song is called, stuck in my head for the rest of my life.)

Thank goodness for the final runway, an Eleganza Extravaganza that let us experience these queens one last time in all their respective glory. Crystal’s puffy “futuristic space princess” look had me craving some of Willy Wonka’s blueberry bubble gum; Gigi’s ’80s prom dweeb was an unexpected delight; Jackie gave us a “Dior-inspired silhouette in Andy Warhol colors”; and Jaida, indeed, looked like a “strong, confident” goddess in an on-brand gown. Sherry was also there.

I wasn’t surprised to see Gigi snag her fourth maxi win of the season, nor was I surprised to see Jackie and Crystal wind up in the bottom. Don’t get me wrong, both queens have fought like hell to reach this point, but the other three were the obvious shoe-ins here. I went into the lip-sync battle rooting for Crystal, and even though Jennifer Lopez’s “On the Floor” didn’t necessarily give either queen a specific edge, I prepared myself for disappointment. … But I was wrong! She pulled it out, and I could not be more proud.

“Thank you guys so much,” Jackie told the judges. “This competition was unlike anything I could have imagined. … It’s so hard to make it this far and not make it all the way. Even though I’m gong home, I’m so proud of myself. I feel so victorious.”

Factoring in Sherry’s disqualification, that leaves Gigi Goode, Jaida Essence Hall and Crystal Methyd as this season’s final three. As previously announced, those finalists will compete in a virtual finale on May 29 (VH1, 8/7c), after which the winner of Season 12 will be crowned.

Did the right queen sashay away this week? And which of the final three are you rooting for? Vote in our poll below, then drop a comment with more of your thoughts on Season 12.

The final challenge of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 12 has arrived, and the remaining queens are feeling the Jantasy nostalgia.

Gigi Goode, Jaida Essence Hall, Crystal Methyd, Jackie Cox and Sherry Pie prepare to hit the runway for their Las Vegas-themed Rusical in TVLine’s exclusive sneak peek from tonight’s episode (VH1, 8/7c), taking the opportunity to reflect on how far everyone — but especially Crystal — has come in the competition.

In other Drag Race news, VH1 has unveiled its plans for the final two episodes of Season 12, beginning with the May 22 reunion (8/7c). According to the network, this season’s contestants — minus Sherry, who was disqualified before she even debuted — will come together for a “virtual slumber party hosted by RuPaul to kiki about everything that’s happened this season.” In addition to discussing how the queens have been handling quarantine, the group will also tackle “this season’s shadiest moments and most shocking eliminations.” The reunion will wrap with a round of fan questions.

The May 29 season finale (8/7c) will also be filmed virtually, though VH1 promises “innovative technology that highlights the creativity of the queens.” The finalists will compete in a “revolutionary lip-sync battle for the crown,” and one will receive it from reigning winner Yvie Oddly. Nina West will also return to crown this season’s Miss Congeniality, and other “special celebrity guests” are expected to make appearances throughout the night.

SNL Video: Jason Sudeikis Brings Virtual Dance to ‘What Up With That?’ https://briefnews.eu/snl-video-jason-sudeikis-brings-virtual-dance-to-what-up-with-that/ https://briefnews.eu/snl-video-jason-sudeikis-brings-virtual-dance-to-what-up-with-that/#respond Sun, 26 Apr 2020 06:13:52 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/snl-video-jason-sudeikis-brings-virtual-dance-to-what-up-with-that/

What up with that? Jason Sudeikis’ ebullient backup dancer, that’s what.

NBC’s Saturday Night Live returned this weekend with its second “At Home” edition of the pandemic, having first attempted socially distanced sketch comedy on April 11.

In one of the most ambitious remotely recorded bits thus far, Kenan Thompson reprised his role as Diondre Cole, host of the BET talk show “What Up With That?” But rather than simply go it alone, Diondre was joined by all the usual suspects, including Sudeikis’ tracksuit-wearing dancer, Fred Armisen’s saxophonist and backup singers Ego Nwodim an Melissa Villasenor — each of whom appeared in their own window without missing a frenetic beat.

For good measure, there were also cameos by a puzzled Charles Barkley and DJ Khaled. Watch the full video above.

It’s been more than seven years since SNL‘s last “What Up With That” sketch, which aired on December 15, 2012 and featured talk show guests Martin Short, Samuel L. Jackson and Carrie Brownstein.

The inaugural SNL at Home averaged 6.7 million total viewers and a 1.46 rating, placing second for the season behind Eddie Murphy’s Dec. 21 hosting turn (which drew just shy of 10 mil along with a 2.5 rating). That time around, recuperating COVID-19 patient Tom Hanks served as surprise host, Alec Baldwin called into Weekend Update as President Trump, and Bernie Sanders recorded from home a video as former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.

Nintendo Labo VR kits bring virtual reality to Switch consoles in April https://briefnews.eu/nintendo-labo-vr-kits-bring-virtual-reality-to-switch-consoles-in-april/ https://briefnews.eu/nintendo-labo-vr-kits-bring-virtual-reality-to-switch-consoles-in-april/#respond Thu, 07 Mar 2019 09:02:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nintendo-labo-vr-kits-bring-virtual-reality-to-switch-consoles-in-april/

Rumours have proven true this week as Nintendo revealed their latest dabbling with virtual reality, this time for the Switch.

Nintendo Labo VR kits were announced today with a release date set for April 2019.

Fans will have two options when they hit shelves next month, the full set, including goggles and a full cardboard kits package, and a smaller starter pack.

The starter pack comes with goggles and the blaster/rifle labo kit, with the additional kits available to buy individually.

“With the new Nintendo Labo VR Kit, there’s more to Make, Play, and Discover together than ever before,” a message from Nintendo reads.

“Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit is a unique first VR experience kids and families can build themselves!

“The Starter Set + Blaster kit provides an action-packed introduction to the experience.

“You can then add to the fun with the Expansion Sets. Or, if you want an even broader experience right away, you can purchase the full Nintendo Labo VR Kit, which features six VR Toy-Con projects in one package.”

The Nintendo Labo VR kits will be launching on April 12 and will be limited to the software advertised.

That means fans won’t be able to play any of the other AAA titles they may want to try out in virtual reality.

And it doesn’t appear that Nintendo will be expanding into wider VR support, at least not with the current Nintendo Switch model.

However, Labo VR does provide a chance to test out the popularity of the tech with their player base before deciding on future plans.

“This new kit builds on the core tenets of Nintendo Labo – Make, Play and Discover – to introduce virtual reality in a way that’s fun and approachable for both kids and kids at heart,” said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing.

“We wanted to design an experience that encourages both virtual and real-world interactions among players through passing around Toy-Con creations.”

Available Labo sets include Toy-Con VR Google, Blaster, Camera, Elephant, Bird and Wind Pedal.
