3232Practical Ways To Be An Environmentally Friendly Record Collector
https://briefnews.eu/practical-ways-to-be-an-environmentally-friendly-record-collector/
https://briefnews.eu/practical-ways-to-be-an-environmentally-friendly-record-collector/#respondFri, 31 May 2019 11:56:19 +0000http://briefnews.eu/?p=253015The environmental impact of vinyl on the planet is one of the music industry’s (many) dirty little secrets. Last year alone over 4 million new vinyl records were purchased, and considering the average LP weighs about 135g, that means that over 550 tonnes of our favourite black plastic – with all its associated energy and environmental costs entered into the market at a time when we should all be thinking about reducing our carbon (and plastic) footprints.
Take care of your records
First and foremost, with proper cleaning, proper storage and even the occasional repair you should never need to buy any record more than once. Vinyl is a far cry away from single use plastic – let’s keep it that way.
Fix them where possible
Put quite simply, lower your standards. Cosmetic damage to a record can, if you put your mind to it, simply be ignored. Crumpled corners, for example, are annoying but don’t really necessitate replacing an entire record. Even warping is something that can often be ignored – if it doesn’t affect playback, and isn’t getting any worse, then hold off on replacing it. You may even be able to find a store that can fix the warp – or if you’re brave enough, look online and you can even try it yourself.
Give them to Charity/Local Record Store/ Swap shop
Many local charity shops will be glad to take them off your hands (as long as they’re not wrecked). Discogs and Ebay are always worth checking just in case you have something that might just sell. And, if you know anyone who sells at car boot sales, offer your unwanted wax to them or go along yourself – they’re still a haunt for certain vinyl collectors.
Gift them
If a record just isn’t doing it for you anymore, think about gifting it to someone who may want them.
Dispose using a specialist vinyl recycler
Let’s be clear. PVC records are not recyclable, not in the traditional sense…
There are specialist vinyl recycling places that will accept them, but the difficult physical processes involved require scale. So we’re talking bulk quantities here – industrial amounts, rather than domestic. As such, whilst its cardboard sleeve and paper dust protector is usually fine to recycle, the record itself is not. Find a local record store that does deal with industrial amounts, Norman Records for example will happily take them off your hands if they are broken beyond repair, or even if you just don’t have the time to pass the working records on to charity yourself.
Get creative and repurpose… or give to those who do!
Walk through any market in the land (or simply head over to Etsy) and you’ll find weird and wonderful things crafted from old records – bowls, clocks, ash trays, bookends, framed artwork. If you’re not handy or artsy enough to make things like this yourself then maybe offer your unwanted vinyl to someone who is?
Be Proactive – Tell your favourite artists and labels to consider eco-friendly production methods
For more than a century, the current method of production has been consuming vast amounts of energy. But, there are companies trying to fix this. Dutch CD manufacturer Symcon, have devised a method in which to create a more environmentally friendly production process for vinyl records. It is estimated to use 65% less energy and has received grants from the European Union to help make the technology more readily available.
Awareness matters, alot. Exert your consumer pressure. The sooner your favourite labels and artists are called to address the problem, the sooner they start to ask for their vinyl to be produced using these greener technologies, and we can all start to feel a little less guilty about our vinyl addiction.
Go ‘Plastic Neutral’
Finally, if you still don’t think your doing enough, perhaps look to the other areas of your life which consume a lot of plastic, your weekly food shop for example?
Or, there’s a little company called Plastic Bank which takes plastic waste and turns it into a currency, offering above-market rates for plastic items to incentivise people to collect it and stop it entering the seas. For a small price you can offset your average yearly consumption of plastic (84kg) while also helping to alleviate poverty (and also maybe your conscience?)

Halloween 3: Season of the Witch is the only chapter in the horror franchise that doesn’t feature the iconic slasher Michael Myers. Though it was disregarded for years, the film has earned a loyal following in horror circles, and those fans will undoubtedly be happy to see the film’s soundtrack composed by John Carpenter and Alan Howarth get the vinyl treatment by Mondo, complete with an incredibly designed package featuring art by Alan Hynes, and a special magic trick to astound your friends.
Halloween 3 Vinyl Soundtrack
Mondo teamed up with Death Waltz Recording Co. to created a new pressing of the remastered soundtrack that Death Waltz issued in 2015, taken from the original 2-inch master tapes. As you can see, there are three different vinyl offerings: 180 Gram Pumpkin Mask vinyl (Orange and Black color-in-color), Skeleton Mask vinyl (Cloudy Clear and Black color-in-color) or Witch Mask vinyl (Green and Black color-in-color).
The artwork by Alan Hynes was designed to resemble vintage, novelty Halloween toy packaging while still fitting with the overall aesthetic of the movie itself. Plus, the special packaging fits inside of the specially designed Halloween vinyl soundtrack slipcase that holds all of the Halloween franchise vinyl releases coming from Mondo this year. Plus, it includes three cards to perform a special magic trick with instructions includes in the slipcase.
If you’re not quite as familiar with the music of Halloween 3 as you are the rest of the franchise, here’s how Mondo excitedly describes the electronic score:
“John Carpenter and Alan Howarth completely jettisoned their previous work and deliver nothing short of an electronic masterpiece. The lead track ‘Chariots Of Pumpkins’ is an epic 4/4 beat-driven synth-banger that has regularly been played by DJs over the last 10 years. The rest of the score features lush pads, Linn drums aplenty and veers from beautiful blissed-out ambient drones to sinister stinger-driven mood pieces. Absolutely outstanding stuff.”
If you need anymore convincing, here’s a teaser video:
Maybe it’s time to revisit Halloween 3: Season of the Witch. You can pick up the Halloween 3 vinyl soundtrack from Mondo starting Wednesday, August 29 at 12pm CT.

You mission, should you choose to accept it…I wonder, did you ever choose not to? Well, when it comes to new vinyl soundtrack releases from Mondo, the answer is no, especially when it comes to Mission: Impossible.
Mondo has announced a vinyl release for the original Mission: Impossible score composed by Danny Elfman for the 1996 adaptation of the classic television series. Complete with cover art that looks like an old school vinyl album from the 1970s, this is the perfect vinyl release for an incredible soundtrack.
Mondo Mission Impossible Vinyl Soundtrack
Danny Elfman’s score for Mission: Impossible is unlike most of the work the composer has done on the big screen, especially when compared to his work for director Tim Burton. Elfman uses Lalo Schifrin‘s signature themes from the original series in a way that adds new life and energy to the classic TV show’s orchestral arrangements. It’s difficult to find scores as good as this one in blockbuster movies nowadays. Just listen to “Train Time” if you haven’t heard it in a while:
This is the first time the Mission: Impossible soundtrack has been available on vinyl, and you can either get it in a limited edition “Red Light/Green Light” vinyl (limited to 1,000 copies) inspired by the explosive piece of gum given to Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) by Jack Harmon (Emilio Estevez). Or you can pick it up in the standard translucent red vinyl. Each version features liner notes by Brian Satterwhite. You can buy them right now on Mondo’s website.
Here’s the official tracklisting for the Mondo Mission Impossible vinyl soundtrack:

With a changing personnel of musicians from Ian Gillan and Roger Glover to David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes, and Tommy Bolin eventually taking the place of guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, these releases are a fine document of a sensational British rock band.
Taken from the original master tapes at Abbey Road Studios, all of these vintage albums have been cut from new digital transfers. The heavyweight 180-gram purple vinyl includes artwork that has been faithfully replicated to match the original pressings.
Crucially for all fans of the band, the vinyl albums also come with download codes and are next in a line-up of classic Deep Purple reissues by Universal Music.
Drummer Ian Paice said: “These albums were recorded in the analogue age before digital CDs. We went from recording tape to master cutting room to pressing plant.
“It’s right that the listener should have the choice to listen to them by placing a needle on an album on a turntable.”
The classic albums to receive this heavyweight purple vinyl treatment are studio albums Machine Head – 1972, Who Do We Think We Are? – 1973, Burn – 1974, Stormbringer – 1974 and Come Taste The Band – 1975.
Plus live albums Made In Japan – 1972, Made In Europe – 1976 and Last Concert In Japan – 1977.
Deep Purple are currently on their ‘Long Goodbye’ world tour.
All eight albums to be released on Friday 7th September 2018.

Call Me By Your Namewas adored by critics last year, and it rode that wave of acclaim all the way to a worthy Best Picture nomination. The film unfolds in Northern Italy in the summer of 1983, where a teenage boy named Elio (Timothée Chalamet) becomes enamored with an American graduate student (Armie Hammer) who comes to study and live with his family. They share a summer full of food, surprising romance, and, of course, music. And that music will be getting a special release on vinyl later this year.
The Call Me By Your Name soundtrack, featuring original songs by Sufjan Stevens, will be getting a Limited Peach Season Edition vinyl release with a peach-colored 2xLP set, including record sleeves that smell like peaches. Just make sure you don’t try to do with these records what Elio does with a certain peach in the movie.
Find out how you can get the Call Me By Your Name peach vinyl below.
Call Me By Your Name Peach Vinyl Soundtrack
Music On Vinyl will be releasing the Call Me By Your Name peach vinyl soundtrack on August 3, 2018, lining up perfectly with the actual peach harvest season. In addition to the 2xLP soundtrack set, this package will include a poster, an insert and 2 exclusive printed innersleeves for the records.

Plastic Fantastic: Get this season’s hottest vinyl trend
The surprising hit of the runway was the integration of wipe clean, vinyl fabrics into high end designer shows.
Rubberised and plastic materials were worked into chic and feminine silhouettes at the likes of Calvin Klein, Chanel, Valentino and Balenciaga, where they became sleek suiting and pencil dresses.
This fantastically plastic trend covered everything from knee high boots to trench coats and dresses.
Here we pick our favourite pieces from the high street and show you how to wear the trend with a vintage twist.

John Boyega might be a huge star now thanks to his leading role as the defected Stormtrooper FN-2187 in the new Star Wars trilogy, but back in 2011 he was a little known name at the center of the sci-fi horror comedy with some incredible monsters, a fantastic ensemble cast and a fantastic score.
Attack the Block mixes Gremlins with Goonies and sets the action in South London where an alien invasion must be thwarted by a street gang of young miscreants. Alexander Armstrong reveals his top 10 vinyl records
On his newly released In A Winter Light, the 47-year-old presenter of quiz show Pointless covers everything from Fleet Foxes’ 2008 White Water Hymnal to There Is No Rose Of Such Virtue, which, he says “is about as old as English church music gets – it’s virtually pagan! We’ve got some lovely old kitsch on there as well”.
The variety of Yuletide sounds reflects Alexander’s restless ear for great music.
But he admits that he gave away his original collection of vinyl to a very lucky Polish man named Pavel.
“My wife was urging me to get rid of it, because we kept moving house and there were so many records,” he explains.
“She said, ‘Come on, just do it quickly’. So I gave them to the builder!” Initially Alex set about downloading the music he lost.

I mean downloads, putting a CD into a slot and pressing ‘play’? I’m just not interested
But then one of the downloads, of David Bowie’s Hunky Dory, omitted a key Rick Wakeman piano line, and another, of the St Matthew Passion, put the whole piece in the wrong order.
“There were recitatives leading into the wrong arias,” wails Alexander, who was a choral scholar in Edinburgh and studied piano at Cambridge.
“It was very upsetting, I don’t mind telling you.” Finally a visit to his friend and comedy partner Ben Miller’s home for lunch, and an afternoon “jumping around” to Ben’s extensive collection of vinyl, persuaded Alex that he’d just have to bite the bullet and replace his original collection…
“I mean downloads, putting a CD into a slot and pressing ‘play’? I’m just not interested. But a record… Everything about it. The weight of it, pulling the vinyl out of the sleeve…”

Key omissions from David Bowie’s famed ‘Hunky Dory’ turned Alex off of music downloads
Now, in the first of an occasional Sunday Express series, Alex guides us through the Top Ten albums that would make it into his Vinyl Countdown…
1. The Pixies – Doolittle (1989) I left Cambridge with a generation of amazing people who were resolute in wanting to act and write stuff and I got caught up with that, which is why I’m doing what I do.
The first thing we did, on leaving, was put on a play called Killing Him.
It had four of us in it: Will Keen, a brilliant actor who’s in The Crown at the moment, Nicola Walker, who’s in Last Tango In Halifax, Jez Butterworth (theatre playwright) and me.
It was all about Black Wednesday and the pound falling out of the ERM, and Jez suggested using The Pixies as the soundtrack.
It’s kind of punk in a way, trashy punk but, as with even the sweatiest, shoutiest hip-hop, sometimes it has a really sweet kernel to it.
GETTY
Alex says the Pixies presented a ‘really sweet kernel’ despite being a punk band
2. Oscar Peterson – We Get Requests (1964) This is a beautiful thing.
My lovely old chum Will Todd, a schoolfriend who is now a choral composer and wrote the anthem for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee service, turned me on to Oscar Peterson.
Oscar was an enormous man, he was at least the size of one house when he died, but as a pianist his technique is phenomenally intricate and understated, a very Latin style of playing.
3. Prince – Sign o’ The Times (1987) This was the first CD I bought for my Discman and I really did listen.
What I love about this is that, in between the tracks, you have all these hilarious little scenes.
I mean, heaven knows what’s going on in them.
Someone says: “I think I’ll have another one of those…” and you picture someone at a cocktail party picking out a canapé or something.
I loved Let’s Go Crazy but this was the album when I realised Prince was a total genius. It’s so funny.
It’s got so much humour in it, that’s the thing.
The title track, Sign o’ The Times, starts off so low-tech and unpromisingly and then you’re into something operatic and fabulous.
GETTY
Prince’s Sign O’ The Times was when Alexander Armstrong realised his genius
4. Prefab Sprout – Steve McQueen (1985) A record I have never stopped listening to since it came out.
Thomas Dolby, the producer, brings this beautiful, textural feel to what is just very sweet, understated rock ’n’ roll.
I was very into The The and Prefab Sprout when I was about 15 or 16, which is kind of the ideal age. You’re at your most absorbent and receptive, I think, at that point and given to long periods of teenage angst.
This is my slightly drab February sort of music.
GETTY
Prefab Sprout’s flavour of rock n’ roll is underrated, says Alex
5. David Bowie – Hunky Dory (1971) My parents had a lot of those collections of hits which were not actually sung by the artists themselves.
We had Space Oddity on one of them and I remember being obsessed by it, aged four or five.
The idea of these guys spiralling off and not really knowing where they were.
Even if I think about it now I find it quite upsetting. Eventually I caught up with the real Bowie and this is my favourite.

I love the Asylum label years, when he was a country singer basically – a piano country singer – and wrote these lovely melodies.
I’m guessing he went to Sunday school and learnt slightly Wesleyan hymn tunes.
There’s something “missionary piano” about some of them and that’s part of their charm.
9. Talking Heads – Fear Of Music (1979) David Byrne is actually a sort of philosopher, really.
Heaven is wonderful – “When this party’s is over, it will start again… Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens” – and Life During Wartime.
I’m a big fan of Byrne’s solo stuff too, Rei Momo (1989) is a fabulous album and Grown Backwards (2004) actually has him doing the Pearl Fishers duet with Rufus Wainwright.
It’s compelling and lovely.
10 The Killers – Sam’s Town (2006) What I love about The Killers is unearthing archaeologically lines that have come straight from other records – little homages.
That “Poor old Johnny Ray” line from Dexy’s turns up in one song.
I’ve never seen them live, apart from seeing The T In The Park on the telly, which I pretend is live, and I was once in a dressing room next to Brandon Flowers, at London Studios, and I could hear him practising a rather tricky high line.
That’s not unusual, really: I was once doing a corporate gig where Duran Duran were playing and heard Simon Le Bon doing arpeggios rather beautifully before going on stage… Hilarious!

Based on these spy shots, we must be getting very close to the reveal of the 2019 Ford Focus. The prototype you see above was wearing the bare minimum of camouflage, and it isn’t even the basic-but-effective black-and-white type. It’s a flashy, colorful wrap that does break up some lines, but doesn’t leave much to the imagination. It even has a hashtag. A hashtag! It’s like it’s trying to be seen.
Anyway, because of the minimal coverings, we get a really clear look at the new hatchback body style. In comparison to the current Focus, the body is much cleaner with fewer creases and surfacing. There are some more drawn-out curves that highlight and accentuate the wheel arches, giving it a more athletic look. They’re curves that wouldn’t look totally out of place on a Mazda3. The grille is significantly different, and clearly drawn with the same pen as the new Fiesta’s, with the widest portion closer to the top as opposed to the bottom. There’s also an interesting amount of unadorned surface between the grille and the triangular fog lights.
Though Ford hasn’t given any specific date for when it will fully reveal the new Focus, we probably won’t have to wait long. As we mentioned, the fact that this car only has a wrap and even has a hashtag indicates Ford is all but ready to show the car. The L.A. auto show is coming up very soon, so it probably won’t be there. Instead, the Detroit show in January is a more likely bet.
