One week after detailing its plan for the 2020-21 TV season, NBC has shed light on the status of the assorted pilots that were hoping to be in contention for a spot on the schedule. Debris — in which Jonathan Tucker’s CIA analyst (Kingdom) and Riann Steele’s (NCIS: New Orleans) MI6 agent investigate the wreckage of an alien spacecraft — actually delivered its pilot ahead of the pandemic and thus is actively under consideration. NBC meanwhile will shoot pilots later this year — once production can safely begin — for Langdon (starring Succession‘s Ashley Zukerman as the hero of the Dan Brown novels), Ordinary Joe (Zoo’s James Wolk lives three Sliding Doors lives), Night School (starring Shameless‘ Shanola Hampton and based on the 2018 movie), Grand Crew (fka untitled Phil Augusta Jackson/Dan Goor comedy about “black people, dating and wine”) and American Auto (which is set at the headquarters of an automotive company in Detroit). At That Age (an exploration of an African-American family’s legacy), Echo (investigators solve crimes by traveling into the past in the body of the victim), Crazy for You (Teen Wolf‘s Shelley Hennig re-enters the dating scene), Jefferies (Jim Jefferies plays a fictionalized version of himself) and Someone Out There (led by Veronica Mars‘ Ryan Hansen), meanwhile, are being “rolled over” to the next development cycle. Additional scripts for all of the above pilots were ordered back in March, as well as for La Brea, which stars Michael Raymond-James (Once Upon a Time) and Natalie Zea (The Detour) and revolves around a massive sinkhole in Los Angeles that rips apart a family and leads to a primeval world. Check out our NBC Pilot Guide for many more details on all the above. Get to dreamcasting a younger Tom Hanks, because NBC has given a pilot order to Langdon, which is about the earlier adventures of the code-cracking hero from The Da Vinci Code and Dan Brown’s other bestselling Robert Langdon novels. Based on Brown’s The Lost Symbol — which technically was the third Robert Langdon book — the prequel series will nonetheless follow the early adventures of the famed Harvard symbologist, who must solve a series of deadly puzzles to save his kidnapped mentor and thwart a chilling global conspiracy. Dan Dworkin and Jay Beattie, co-creators of TV’s Scream, will pen and showrun the series, serving as EPs alongside Brown, Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, Anna Culp, and Samie Falvey. Brown’s Robert Langdon novels have sold tens of millions of copies worldwide, with Hanks playing Langdon in a trio of feature films: 2006’s The Da Vinci Code, 2009’s Angels & Demons and 2016’s Inferno. NBC’s previous drama pilot orders this season include (but are not limited to!) Based on Leonardo da Vinci’s work, there is evidence that the artist had strabismus — a condition that affects about three percent of the population and is usually detected at birth. One eye is straight, while the other eye can drift.

Leonardo DiCaprio is notoriously picky about which projects he tackles as an actor. He hasn’t made a film since finally winning an Oscar for Best Actor in The Revenant, but he’s on board Quentin Tarantino’s developing movie about the Manson Family murders, which is supposed to be his next project. After that, it sounds like he’ll tackle the story of the man who inspired his namesake.
Paramount Pictures has Leonardo DiCaprio lined up to star in an adaptation of Walter Isaacson‘s biography Leonardo da Vinci, about the painter behind the famous “Mona Lisa” and “Last Supper” works who was also known for being a budding inventor, a scholar of anatomy, botany, geology and much more. The studio has also hired a writer who has already worked with DiCaprio on a biographical feature before.
Deadline reports Paramount has hired John Logan (Skyfall, Hugo) to write the Leonardo da Vinci movie as a star vehicle for Leonardo DiCaprio, who previously starred in the Logan-penned Howard Hughes biopic The Aviator. The project has a special place in DiCaprio’s heart because he was given his name because his mother was admiring a da Vinci painting in an Italian museum when she felt him kick for the first time.
Walter Isaacson, who also wrote the biography on which Aaron Sorkin based his Steve Jobs script, used da Vinci’s notebooks to create a story that weaves through all of his experiences in art and science. Here’s how the book is described on Amazon:
Based on thousands of pages from Leonardo’s astonishing notebooks and new discoveries about his life and work, Walter Isaacson weaves a narrative that connects his art to his science. He shows how Leonardo’s genius was based on skills we can improve in ourselves, such as passionate curiosity, careful observation, and an imagination so playful that it flirted with fantasy.
He produced the two most famous paintings in history, The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa. But in his own mind, he was just as much a man of science and technology. With a passion that sometimes became obsessive, he pursued innovative studies of anatomy, fossils, birds, the heart, flying machines, botany, geology, and weaponry. His ability to stand at the crossroads of the humanities and the sciences, made iconic by his drawing of Vitruvian Man, made him history’s most creative genius.
Da Vinci’s life is undoubtedly a colorful one, and it should make for a compelling story, especially with Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead. The actor hasn’t played a character ingrained this far in the past since The Man in the Iron Mask from early in his career. He’ll also be producing the film with Jennifer Davisson through their Appian Way production banner.
It’s not clear when this Leonardo da Vinci movie might get off the ground, but Logan will be writing it while DiCaprio goes off to make Quentin Tarantino’s next movie, so it could be his next project after that. There’s also a Teddy Roosevelt film in the works that would reunite DiCaprio with Martin Scorsese, so we’ll see what happens.

“Salvator Mundi,” a painting that has been identified as one of Leonardo da Vinci’s lost works, sold for a record $ 450 million at a Christie’s auction Wednesday night.
A major flaw in the painting — which is the only one of da Vinci’s that remains in private hands — makes some historians think it’s a fake. The crystal orb in the image doesn’t distort light in the way that natural physics does, which would be an unusual error for da Vinci.

It’s transparent in a way that shows exactly what’s behind it.
A real glass sphere would show a distorted version of what’s behind it.
Da Vinci’s version shows a clear version of Christ’s robe, as if it were a window pane.
Take this image, for example. See how the light filtered through the glass renders the image upside-down?

The sphere in da Vinci’s painting wouldn’t show such a drastic flip, because the orb is close to Jesus’s body. But the reflection should at least be distorted.
It appears to be a rookie mistake.
Da Vinci painted the portrait — of Jesus Christ dressed in Renaissaince Era clothing, crossing his fingers in one hand and holding a crystal orb in the other — around the year 1500. After being bought and sold a few times, the painting was lost to history. In 2011, it was rediscovered and authenticated as one of da Vinci’s works.
But the glass orb raises some doubts about the painting’s authenticity. It’s especially puzzling, writes Walter Isaacson in his biography of the artist, because da Vinci was famously fastidious about the reflection and refraction of light in his work. At the time he made “Salvator Mundi,” he was “deep into his optics studies” and filled his notebooks with diagrams of light bouncing at different angles, according to The Guardian.
“Solid glass or crystal, whether shaped like an orb or a lens, produces magnified, inverted, and reversed images,” Isaacson writes. “Instead, Leonardo painted the orb as if it were a hollow glass bubble that does not refract or distort the light passing through it.”
While the painting was widely confirmed as a da Vinci in 2011, some scholars have suggested that “Salvator Mundi” was a product of da Vinci’s workshop, or was made by another follower without the master’s talent.
ArtWatch UK director Michael Daley told The Guardian that there wasn’t enough evidence to prove the painting’s authenticity. “The Salvator Mundi is dead-pan flat, like an icon, with no real depth in the modeling,” Daley said. “Another unexplained peculiarity is that the figure itself is heavily and uncharacteristically cropped.”

Defenders of the painting’s authenticity say that da Vinci ignored physics on purpose, perhaps to illustrate Christ’s powers. Isaacson himself believes it was an intentional decision to paint it that way and does not believe the painting is a fake.
Christie’s speculated that Da Vinci included a distractingly incorrect glass globe because he didn’t want to distract viewers from Christ himself. According to Reuters, most art scholars have agreed that the painting is an authentic da Vinci.
“It is our opinion that he chose not to portray it in this way because it would be too distracting to the subject of the painting,” a spokeswoman told The Guardian.
The history of “Salvator Mundi” has had a lot of twists and turns. It was sold at auction in 1958, with its authorship unknown, for less than $ 100.
In the late 2000s, it was sold again, restored, and identified as a da Vinci work. The painting was displayed in London’s National Gallery in 2011. In 2013, the chemicals billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev purchased it for $ 127.5 million.
The $ 450 million purchase price beats previous records by a mile. The most that was ever paid for a piece of art at auction was $ 179.4 million, for Picasso’s “Women of Algiers (Version O)” in May 2015. The most ever paid for a work of art overall was $ 300 million, for Willem de Kooning’s “Interchange” in September 2015.
Editor’s note: This article has been updated to reflect Walter Isaacson’s position on the authenticity of the painting.

Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova has won her first match back after a 15-month doping ban, beating Italy’s Roberta Vinci 7-5, 6-3 in the 1st round of the Stuttgart Open in Germany.
Sharapova showed no sign on court rust as she dispatched world No. 36 Vinci in straight sets in Germany, setting up an all-Russia clash with Ekaterina Makarova in tomorrow’s round of matches.
“It’s the best feeling in the world, those first few seconds before you enter the arena. To know you were walking back out there was special. I’ve been waiting for this for a long time,” Sharapova said on court after the match, BBC Sport reported.
“I spent a long time without hitting any balls. I didn’t know when I would be back. I went to school for a little bit, I grew my business and had a normal life. I put the racquet away for a little bit,” she added.
The Russian was given a wildcard entry to the tournament and the match was her first competitive outing since she was handed a ban by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) in March 2016, after testing positive for banned substance meldonium during the Australian Open.
Five-time grand slam winner Sharapova, 30, was originally handed a two-year ban, although this was reduced to 15 months on appeal.

Sharapova served strongly and claimed a 7-5, victory against Vinci, a player who has the distinction of having won all four Grand Slams as a doubles player.

Sharapova will now face compatriot Ekaterina Makarova in the next round, after the Russian stunned seventh seed Agnieszka Radwanska in their first-round match.
Five-time Grand Slam champion Sharapova will have to work her way back up the rankings and it is up to tournament organizers, rather than the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), to decide whether she is granted wildcards to participate at events.

The wildcard granted for the main draw in Stuttgart was met with a mixed response.
“I don’t agree about the wildcard here and about the wildcard in Rome and the other tournaments,” Vinci said ahead of the match, the BBC reported.
“She made her mistakes for sure, but she paid and I think she can return to play – but without any wildcards.”
Others have been more supportive of the Russian, however, including former world number one Kim Clijsters. She told BBC Sport that Sharapova “has done her time and her punishment” and that “I don’t think she needs to be punished more.”
Current world number one and 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams said in March 2016, shortly after Sharapova had given a press conference announcing the positive test, that the Russian had taken responsibility for the situation.
“Most people were surprised and shocked but happy that she was upfront and very honest.”
“It’s just taking responsibility, which she admitted she was ready to do.”
The comeback was the source of huge media interest, with a sell-out crowd of about 4,000 also watching the match against Vinci.
Much has been made of the fact that Stuttgart tournament sponsor Porsche is also a commercial backer of Sharapova. Tournament qualifying began on Saturday, although the Russian’s first-round game was held on Wednesday, the day after her ban ended.

UK paper the Telegraph reports that Sharapova will be a given a qualifying wildcard rather than a card for the main draw for the next Grand Slam on the calendar, the 2017 French Open, which begins at the end of May. Tournament officials have said they will announce their official decision on May 16.
Sharapova was banned for taking banned substance meldonium, also known as mildronate. She does not deny taking the substance, which she had been prescribed for 10 years by a family doctor due to health issues. However, she says she was unaware it had been added to the World Anti-Doping Authority’s (WADA) list of banned substances on January 1, 2016, and that this had been poorly communicated.
