The country has banned big screens in public spaces, citing terrorist concerns.

“I remind all publicly-elected officials of the fact that ‘big screen’ zones are completely forbidden in public spaces,” the interior ministry said in a statement on Tuesday, as quoted by AFP.

It went on to state that the same security measures that were used at Euro 2016, which was held in France, will be deployed during the World Cup due to the “current climate of terrorist threats.”

Although big screens won’t be allowed to be set up in the streets, the statement did say that city officials can organize their own zones with big screens. However, “these transmissions, organized under their responsibility, can only be held in closed or strictly controlled areas.”

Those areas include stadiums, sports venues, and conference centers, all of which would require a “heavy security presence” at the “cost of the organizer.” The FIFA World Cup will take place in Russia from mid-June to mid-July.

France has been on high alert for more than three years, following the January 2015 terrorist attacks which killed 17 people in Paris. In November of the same year, attacks in and around the French capital killed 130 people.

But the country’s efforts to protect citizens from further attacks have been criticized by rights groups who say they infringe on the freedom of the citizens. One of the most controversial moves came in October, when France approved a counter-terrorism law to replace a two-year state of emergency. That law gave police broader powers for data collection and surveillance, prompting UN human rights experts to express concern that it would restrict civil liberties.

Meanwhile, officials say the terrorist threat in France will not end anytime soon, with the Paris public prosecutor stating in January that the threat remains “very high.”

The livestreaming service is teaming with BBC Studios on a seven-week Doctor Who viewing event on May 29th that will show more than 500 classic episodes of the Time Lord’s adventures, dating all the way back to the first black-and-white season in 1963. It’s not the usual marathon — the company will air a batch of episodes every day on its TwitchPresents channel starting at 2PM Eastern. The Yogscast team will produce shows to introduce each Doctor, so you’ll hopefully know the differences between Tom Baker and Sylvester McCoy (hint: there are many) by the time all is said and done.

Not surprisingly, there will be custom Doctor Who emotes for channel subscribers, TARDIS cheer bits and weekly giveaways where you can win fan packs or a trip to London Comic Con. There’s no doubt that the BBC is using this as a way to fuel buzz for the series ahead of Jodie Whittaker’s debut in October 2018. Consider this, though: if you’ve only ever watched modern episodes (or can’t play your old VHS tapes), this is a good way to see what you missed in the first few decades.

Coronation Street: Producer supports rape storyline as fans long for lighter viewing https://briefnews.eu/coronation-street-producer-supports-rape-storyline-as-fans-long-for-lighter-viewing/ https://briefnews.eu/coronation-street-producer-supports-rape-storyline-as-fans-long-for-lighter-viewing/#respond Sat, 17 Mar 2018 08:05:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/coronation-street-producer-supports-rape-storyline-as-fans-long-for-lighter-viewing/

Already viewers have slammed the recent harrowing child grooming of Bethany Platt and psychopath Pat Phelan’s double murder.

Now Ms Oates has defended last night’s shocking new story – where hairdresser David Platt (Jack P Shepherd) is drugged and raped by Josh Tucker (Ryan Clayton) who he believed was his friend.

On TV’s Good Morning Britain yesterday, Ms Oates denied the soap has gone too far this time.

She said: “Male sexual assault happens. One in 10 rapes that happens in the UK will have a male victim.

“This needs discussion – it’s so important to shine a light on these subjects. Do it carefully, do it with consideration but we are a drama, we want to inform people.”

Model Nicola McLean, 36, whose sons are Rocky, 12, and Striker, seven, told the programme the new plots are a step “too far”.

She said: “I just think it should be after 9 o’clock. I don’t think it’s something I want brought into my front room. It’s meant to be an entertainment show.”

Watchdog Ofcom is assessing if ITV breached guidelines by screening violent scenes ahead of the 9pm watershed after receiving 622 complaints over Pat Phelan’s recent murder spree.

Crime writer Martina Cole, known for her dark thrillers, recently said she pines for the light-hearted days and legendary characters of the soap.

Ms Cole, 58, said: “The storylines go on too long, ie Phelan and Billy’s drugs drama. Too many episodes and not enough storylines.

“For me, the wonder days of Ken and Deirdre and Baldwin need to be revisited.

“Those storylines could have done 20 episodes a week and I’d have happily watched, fabulous acting! The same goes for Hilda and Stan, Vera and Jack.”

TV presenter Fern Britton also recently blasted the Street, bemoaning its lack of charm, saying:

“If I got a chance to sit down with Corrie’s scriptwriters I’d give them both barrels and tell them to give us more of the characters with heart that we love.”

But Ms Oates insisted: “I’m not going anywhere. I think the David story is going to be a long runner and it will tie in with another really significant story.

“As that unfolds it will be quite an emotional journey for the audience to go on but a worthwhile one I think.”

The future of Super Bowl viewing will be mixed reality https://briefnews.eu/the-future-of-super-bowl-viewing-will-be-mixed-reality/ https://briefnews.eu/the-future-of-super-bowl-viewing-will-be-mixed-reality/#respond Mon, 05 Feb 2018 00:50:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-future-of-super-bowl-viewing-will-be-mixed-reality/

Super Bowl Sunday is upon us once again. However, one of America’s most beloved traditions may soon be disrupted and re-invented. Television viewership of the game has declined in recent years, with an increasing number of fans following through digital channels. And for those who watched the big game just for the commercials and halftime show, YouTube has become the preferred always-on alternative. While football diehards will still pay thousands of dollars per ticket and attend the game in-person, the rest of us can look forward to the promise of an enhanced experience through mixed and virtual reality technologies.

Creating a MR-optimized Super Bowl is all about the sensory experience. The more senses viewers can interact with, the more immersive and participatory it can become. Being able to “transport” someone there has been considered science fiction for a long time, but we’re actually getting close.

There are many visions of how sensors and MR may intersect to deliver exciting viewer experiences. Some companies are already installing cameras to capture every angle so viewers can choose if they want to sit on the field, the owner’s box, or float above the field. Others are exploring suits that deliver tactile sensations when players get hit, providing a POV-style experience. Imagine each player’s helmet equipped with cameras and their uniforms with sensors — home viewers won’t just be spectators, they’ll be able to see and comprehend the action as if they’re truly in the game.

Reinventing the advertising industry

While fans are looking forward to the MR-optimized Super Bowl experience, advertisers may be salivating even more over these new innovations. Studies show that consumers are more willing to interact with VR-enhanced ads, creating new opportunities to drive brand awareness and influence purchases. This might partially be attributed to VR advertising medium being so new, and consumers are hungry for interactive content. However, the novelty will soon wear off, and consumers will only be lured by ads that are as compelling as the MR-enhanced Super Bowl game itself. This presents a significant opportunity for advertisers to leverage mixed reality content to win viewer attention and dollars.

Imagine having the player who just scored a touchdown virtually “break through” your living room wall and deliver a personalized in-your-face pizza ad. Commercials can become so powerful that consumers will have to second-guess which elements are reality and which are virtual, almost approaching the level of a magician’s illusion.

Challenges

While many would like to fast-forward in time to an immersive, engaging Super Bowl experience, there are many challenges we’ll need to overcome along the way. The first and most obvious roadblock is related to technology. While many of the technical capabilities already exist, the ability to deliver a seamless, interactive experience in real-time still requires further innovation. And thus, the expense to create content for said technologies is also at a premium right now.

Several companies, including Microsoft, currently have amazing 360-degree holographic soundstage facilities with hundreds of cameras creating the MR-ready holographic image that the Super Bowl will one day showcase. But current capabilities are not able to produce lifelike real-time holographic content yet. Companies are starting to equip and test stadiums with similar surround-capture technology to deliver VR experiences, but it will take several more iterations before these technologies can deliver a hyper-real MR experience.

This MR-enhanced Super Bowl is also an expensive proposition. We’re not talking about a simple POV VR camera, but instead some serious computing power to drive real-time holographic content. Before the full immersive experience is affordable to consumers, broadcasters, entertainment venues, restaurants, and bars with large budgets will likely be the first adopters. It’s common to see these high tech innovations begin in a commercial space first. Then, they’re scaled down in scope and cost to fit the budgets – and limited space – of the average person’s living room. When the development cycles are completed, a state-of-the-art MR home kit will be far less expensive than a ticket to the Super Bowl, and consumers will be able to use it throughout the year for all kinds of special broadcasts, as more and more content is created for the MR medium.

Timeline

We’re moving at full speed to make MR experiences a reality, and some of these innovations could arrive as early as the 2020 Super Bowl. The seamless and amazing 1:1 future experiences we’re imagining are probably five years away, but I’d love to be proven wrong and see it earlier.

As the most-watched event on television, the Super Bowl will be the testing ground for these exciting advancements. The broadcast, in its evolved forms, will become the new milestone event for technology innovators, advertisers and content creators. As new programming and advertising experiences emerge that blur the line between an ad and the experience, interaction levels will continue to rise. Some fans may find the new immersive MR experience as good — or maybe better than — attending the game in-person.

Facebook adds more viewing options to its 360 app for Gear VR https://briefnews.eu/facebook-adds-more-viewing-options-to-its-360-app-for-gear-vr/ https://briefnews.eu/facebook-adds-more-viewing-options-to-its-360-app-for-gear-vr/#respond Fri, 15 Dec 2017 18:07:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/facebook-adds-more-viewing-options-to-its-360-app-for-gear-vr/

Facebook launched its Facebook 360 app for Gear VR in March and today the company announces some new features. Facebook says that because people want more than just 360 videos in VR, it’s adding a slew of new video types to the app’s available options.

Now, users will be able to view Live videos, including Live 360 videos rendered in 4K, shows available through Facebook Watch, gaming and eSports videos, videos you’ve previously watched on Facebook as well as videos and 360 photos you’ve uploaded or shared through Facebook. The app will also now allow you to search for and follow Pages.

Facebook has been expanding its VR offerings this year. In April, it launched Spaces, its social VR experience and in October, Mark Zuckerberg announced the company was working on a VR feature that would let you meet up with friends and watch concerts. Creating a wider viewing selection in Facebook 360 is a useful addition and can only help boost the company’s VR ambitions.

BBC Breakfast: Dan Walker takes swipe at rival ITV's viewing figures 'No chance!' https://briefnews.eu/bbc-breakfast-dan-walker-takes-swipe-at-rival-itvs-viewing-figures-no-chance/ https://briefnews.eu/bbc-breakfast-dan-walker-takes-swipe-at-rival-itvs-viewing-figures-no-chance/#respond Tue, 21 Nov 2017 10:50:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bbc-breakfast-dan-walker-takes-swipe-at-rival-itvs-viewing-figures-no-chance/

His remark came after fellow presenter Steph McGovern had spoken to easyJet’s outgoing chief executive Carolyn McCall, who is moving to , about the company’s profits.

The host revealed that their figures had been “quite robust” and there was no doubt she would be missed from the company.

She told Dan and Louise Minchin: “Interestingly, she has been seven years the boss of easyJet and she is now going to be the head at ITV.

“It’s an interesting move for her and she’s one of those bosses as well that everyone seems to love and wants them to be their boss.”

“So, it will be interesting to see what she does at ITV next… hopefully not increase their figures from us,” Steph continued.

But Dan assured her not to worry as he took a swipe at the rival broadcaster, remarking: “No chance… she might be a fan of I’m A Celebrity.”

Louise and Steph could be seen chuckling at his comment before awkwardly moving onto the next segment.

The moment came not long at the hosts appeared to be having some technical difficulties as they tried to show viewers what they could expect from their interview with the Harlem Globetrotters.

As they cut to the green room where the basketball players were waiting, the pair could be seen pacing around rather than showcasing their skills.

Louise nervously told viewers: “Just a moment ago they were doing brilliant tricks,” before calling to the Harlem Globetrotters: “We’re on you now.”

Dan could also be heard trying to get their attention as he shouted: “You’re live on the telly boys! That’s it. Start dancing.”

Sun Chaser: Volvo Turns XC60 into Retina-Friendly Eclipse Viewing Station https://briefnews.eu/sun-chaser-volvo-turns-xc60-into-retina-friendly-eclipse-viewing-station/ https://briefnews.eu/sun-chaser-volvo-turns-xc60-into-retina-friendly-eclipse-viewing-station/#respond Fri, 18 Aug 2017 14:12:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sun-chaser-volvo-turns-xc60-into-retina-friendly-eclipse-viewing-station/ XC60 Eclipse Viewer

–

Monday, August 21, 2017, will mark the first time in more than 38 years that parts of the United States will be able to witness a solar eclipse in its totality. Although most eclipse viewers will be relegated to staring at the phenomenon behind ISO-certified 12312-2 sunglasses while standing outside in the hot and humid summer air, Volvo will offer a handful of eclipse enthusiasts the opportunity to watch the rare celestial event from the comfortable confines of the 2018 Volvo XC60.

–

A handful of the Swedish automotive brand’s dealers in Oregon, Idaho, Nebraska, Missouri, and South Carolina—states in the path of the eclipse—will sell a tailor-made eclipse viewer that magnetically attaches to the roof of the XC60. The lens covers the $ 42,495 crossover’s standard panoramic sunroof with an eclipse-friendly ISO-certified 12312-2 transparent material that will allow up to five people within the XC60 to witness the moon walk across the sun’s face. Volvo will also livestream the eclipse in 4K on its Racing The Sun website.

The 2018 XC60 marks the second generation of Volvo’s compact crossover SUV. Offered in three different trims (Momentum, Inscription, and R-Design), the new XC60 is powered by one of three four-cylinder powertrains. Entry-level T5 models come equipped with a 250-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four, while the T6 sports a 316-hp turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter inline-four, and T8 plug-in hybrids supplement that engine with an electric motor for a combined 400 horsepower. All 2018 XC60s come standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive.

Twitch is down for streaming and viewing https://briefnews.eu/twitch-is-down-for-streaming-and-viewing/ https://briefnews.eu/twitch-is-down-for-streaming-and-viewing/#respond Mon, 17 Jul 2017 01:40:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/twitch-is-down-for-streaming-and-viewing/

You may have trouble tuning into the finals of the Evo fighting game tournament this evening because the Twitch livestreaming service is down for a significant number of people. This is preventing broadcasters from publishing new streams, and it is also keeping viewers from tuning into their favorite channels.

The outage is not affecting everyone, but many (including me) cannot get the Twitch front page or any individual channel to load. I also attempted to start a stream, but my broadcast software gave me an “internal server error” message.

Twitch has acknowledged the issues in a post on social media. The company first noted that viewer lists were not loading earlier in the day. More recently, however, the company said it is looking into broader errors.

Twitch is the go-to site for live gaming-related video. It has expanded its content recently to include a number of other categories including vlogging, makeup tutorials, and more. Many broadcasters enjoy the Amazon-owned platform because it is typically reliable, and it has a number of crucial social features — like an active chat community.

The PC Gaming channel is presented by Intel®‘s Game Dev program.

Selling your house? This is what house buyers REALLY look for when viewing your home https://briefnews.eu/selling-your-house-this-is-what-house-buyers-really-look-for-when-viewing-your-home/ https://briefnews.eu/selling-your-house-this-is-what-house-buyers-really-look-for-when-viewing-your-home/#respond Tue, 20 Jun 2017 15:35:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/selling-your-house-this-is-what-house-buyers-really-look-for-when-viewing-your-home/

The innovative study uses eye tracking technology and can reveal exactly what people look for when they view a property, and just how distracting mess and clutter can be for potential home buyers.

The study was conducted by Anglian Home Improvements and saw a range of house hunters view a property while wearing eye tracking glasses, to see what actually grabbed their attention during the viewing.

The furnishings and decor took up to 27 per cent of the house hunters’ focus during the viewing, with a similar amount of time (24 per cent) being spent on looking at clutter and mess around the home. In comparison, the layout of the house took up just four per cent of their time during the viewing.

Clutter around the house was most distracting for the female house viewers, who spent 28 per cent of their viewing time focusing on it, compared to 20 per cent for male buyers.

The results show that even when the potential house buyers didn’t mention the mess to the estate agent, their eyes were consistently drawn to it when panning a room.

Overall, men spent more time than women looking at the structure and features of the grounds and building (32 per cent compared to 22 per cent), while women focused more on the personal elements such as photo frames, decoration and furnishings (16 per cent compared to 13 per cent).

As with clutter and mess, personal items constantly drew the participants gaze. Photos were a big element of this – the data showed that house hinters often made eye contact with specific photographs, which distracted the viewers from other elements in the room.

Looking at exterior features and the garden accounted for 22 per cent of the participant’s focus, with 17 per cent of time spent looking outside through the windows.

Based on the findings of the study, Matt Carey, Head of Digital Marketing at Anglian Home Improvements, shares their top tips for selling your home.

Keep garden boundaries clear

The garden and how close the house was to the neighbours was a large focus for many of the participants, so keeping the garden tidy and clearly defining the boundaries between neighbouring properties is definitely something that needs to be thought about when selling a home.

Tidy personal items away

While participants scanned the room their eyes were constantly drawn to items that would help them understand who is living here currently. Clutter and mess, unusual decor and personal items are likely to distract a potential buyer from their overall objective, making it harder to see them living here.

Keep an eye on the smaller details

For building features the less attention it draws the better, as viewers are looking for problems. Ensure all large features such as fireplaces, sliding door and extensions are in god working order.

Melanie McDonald, Head of PR at Anglian Home Improvements, said: “We have spent years helping people improve the look and feel of their homes, so we were very excited to gain some real insight into what people look for when it comes to buying a new property.

“It was very interesting to learn that so little of the participants behaviour was focused on the building and structural features, apart from the things that needed to be fixed.

“Although it is easy to forget to mend that broken light switch or socket, the fact that all the participates lingered on the badly installed light switch in the study just goes to show these little things are noticed during house viewings and will make the idea of them living in the property seem much further away.

“With nearly a fifth of the house hunters’ time spent looking out the window, one of the top tips from this experiment it to make sure the view from your windows is up to scratch.”

Property guru Phil Spencer has recently revealed the trick you need to know to sell your home fast.
