Yes, NFL Viewership Is Down. No, It’s Not All Trump. https://briefnews.eu/yes-nfl-viewership-is-down-no-its-not-all-trump/ https://briefnews.eu/yes-nfl-viewership-is-down-no-its-not-all-trump/#respond Wed, 27 Sep 2017 10:27:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/yes-nfl-viewership-is-down-no-its-not-all-trump/ Puerto Rico is in ruins, North Korea is threatening to drop hydrogen bombs, Obamacare’s repeal is slipping back into the grave from which it rose, and tax reform is languishing in Congress. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has tweeted 22 times since Saturday about the NFL ratings and the right of football players to kneel during the national anthem.

The president, whose fixation with attendance has been obvious from the literal second that he became president, has repeatedly said the NFL’s ratings were “WAY DOWN” due to protests. He even took personal credit for the league’s declining viewership.

Is the president right? Yes and no. Yes, in that there is little question that football viewership, the jewel of the cable bundle, is in decline; and this, in itself, is an important media story. But also no, since neither the president nor the protests are the primary culprit.

First, the ratings. It’s important to beware headlines about bad ratings for one particular game, or one specific week. Football isn’t like a television show that airs with the same characters on a weekly basis. Instead, there are 32 teams playing a 17-week round-robin, with four main television windows for NFL action: early Sunday games (airing at 1 p.m. Eastern Time), later Sunday games (airing around 4 p.m. Eastern), Sunday Night Football on NBC, and Monday Night Football on ESPN. For any given week, ratings could easily be down in one window and up for another, depending on the star power of the players, the quality of the game, and the popularity of competing shows.

That said, the general trend is down in almost every window for the last four years. Last year, the NFL’s decline accelerated due to an uptick in cord-cutting, a blockbuster presidential election, and a raft of non-competitive games.

This year, the NFL-ratings picture through three weeks is muddled. During the preseason, ratings were up. In Weeks 1 and 2, ratings declined in two-thirds of NFL windows. In Week 3, after the president’s comments, there was little evidence of a Trump Effect. Ratings were up for some day games, down on Sunday night, and up again on Monday for the Dallas Cowboys, who prevailed over the Arizona Cardinals after taking a collective knee before the national anthem. The most accurate 2017 summary of NFL ratings is: mostly flat or down, but up whenever the Cowboys play.

So, what’s behind the decline in football ratings?

This is a multibillion-dollar question. Television networks and carriers, such as ESPN and DirecTV, have committed $ 50 billion to the NFL until the early 2020s. U.S. companies spend more than $ 4 billion annually on ads during games.

The decline of NFL viewership is seen as an omen for the demise of the cable bundle, but it’s difficult to say for sure why ratings are declining. Last year, NFL viewership was down 12 percent annually until the presidential election, leading many (including me) to suggest that the blockbuster campaign was the primary reason for the decline. But after the election, viewership was still down 5 percent through the end of the season in January.

Some high-profile surveys blamed Colin Kaepernick and other pre-game protesters. But this explanation is unsatisfying, for two reasons. First, Kaepernick isn’t on any NFL team in 2017, and Week 1 viewership this year was even lower than 2016, in some windows. What’s more, there is some evidence that the number of people who watched the NFL increased in 2016, and ratings only dropped because they spent less time watching. This suggests that the quality of the gameplay, not the tenor of politics, was the more important culprit.

But each of these explanations are specific to football, which means they ignore the larger, and more important truth: Ratings are down for everything, except for cable news. Out of 78 prime-time broadcast series that aired in both 2016 and 2017, only one—ABC’s The Bachelor—increased viewership among people under 50. Just about every live sport is dealing with the same problem. NASCAR, although praised by Trump for its fealty to the national anthem, opened its most recent playoffs with the lowest ratings ever. Last year, the NBA had some of its lowest-rated games ever, as well.

These facts cry out for a broader, structural explanation. One is that Trump’s nonstop news cycle has become a more entertaining sport than, well, sports. But here an even more important one: Five years ago, there were hardly a million “cord-cutter” households. Today, there are an estimated 7 million. That’s an exodus from pay television the size of Virginia and New Jersey combined. It’s inconceivable that this would have no effect whatsoever on NFL ratings. Rather, football is the most buoyant cargo aboard a sinking ship.

Cord-cutting has been going on for a while. The decline in football viewership is more recent. So, how do these stories match up? The cord-cutting revolution is concentrated among younger people, while households over 55 are actually watching more TV than ever. To put it bluntly, older Americans die at higher rates, and younger Americans find themselves torn between many TV options. In this way, football will find that its consumer base is structurally bounded by entertainment abundance on one hand and mortality on the other. That ought to lead not to an audience implosion, but a slow and steady overall decline.

Nobody should be surprised to find Trump patting himself on the back for this development. The president has a habit of taking credit for structural shifts that his tenure has merely inherited. For example, he took credit for his first “1 million jobs,” even though job growth had slowed from a level that the president previously criticized as too low.

But to the extent that there is a Trump Effect at work, it is mostly the president’s ability to turn everything into a story about the president’s unique ability to command attention. NFL viewership was once an arcane tabulation, which only TV execs and sports-media insiders obsessed over. It has become a kind of national referendum on the president, social justice, and the propriety of pre-game protest. Under this president, nothing escapes politicization—especially ratings.

Game of Thrones ended its penultimate season on a record-shattering note. Sunday’s super-sized Season 7 finale drew a series-high 12.1 million viewers in its initial 9/8c airing. The number jumps to 16.5 million when replays and streaming are factored in.

That’s up 40 percent compared to the Season 6 finale (8.9 million viewers), and 13 percent over the previous most-watched outing (Season 7’s “Eastwatch,” which drew 10.7 million viewers).

For historical perspective’s sake, the Emmy-winning drama’s first five season finales delivered, respectively, 3 million, 4.2 million, 5.4 million, 7.1 million and 8.1 million total viewers.

TVLine readers gave this year’s 80-minute closer an average grade of “A-.”

Game of Thrones Season 7, Episode 4: “I drew a bigger audience than any other episode in the entire series!”

Game of Thrones Season 7, Episode 5: “Hold my arbor gold.”

“Eastwatch,” Sunday’s installment of HBO’s fantasy drama. attracted 10.72 million viewers, our sister site Deadline reports. That number breaks the series’ previous record — earned by this season’s “The Spoils of War” — of 10.2 million. In addition, the hour earned a 5.0 rating in the coveted 18-49 demo — also a record high.

Among myriad other developments, the jam-packed episode reintroduced a key character not seen in seasons, seemed to put a fine point on a question fans have debated for years and reunited two fan-favorite characters who’d been apart for some time.

‘Saimdang, Light’s Diary’ K-Drama Debuts With Double-Digit Viewership — SBS Continues To Dominate Korean TV With Past/Present Timelines And Dual Role Concepts [Video And Spoilers] https://briefnews.eu/saimdang-lights-diary-k-drama-debuts-with-double-digit-viewership-sbs-continues-to-dominate-korean-tv-with-pastpresent-timelines-and-dual-role-concepts-video-an/ https://briefnews.eu/saimdang-lights-diary-k-drama-debuts-with-double-digit-viewership-sbs-continues-to-dominate-korean-tv-with-pastpresent-timelines-and-dual-role-concepts-video-an/#respond Fri, 27 Jan 2017 18:20:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/saimdang-lights-diary-k-drama-debuts-with-double-digit-viewership-sbs-continues-to-dominate-korean-tv-with-pastpresent-timelines-and-dual-role-concepts-video-an/ Saimdang Light's Diary -- Official Horizontal Poster 1

In the final K-drama season of 2016, the one that is technically a year-to-year swing season from 2016 to 2017, the Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS) dominated with two of the most entertaining K-dramas seen on Korean public television: The Legend of the Blue Sea and Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim.

Starting with the former, The Legend of the Blue Sea received the most hype as it was the long-awaited K-drama comebacks for both Jun Ji Hyun (My Love From Another Star) and Lee Min Ho (Boys Over Flowers, Heirs). It would also be the last K-drama Min Ho would star in before he fulfilled his conscription of two years in the South Korean military. However, Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim starring Han Suk Kyu, Yoo Yeon Seok, and Seo Hyun Jin was the far more popular K-drama. It was also a testament to SBS being king of medical K-dramas as it is consecutively the fourth successful series since 2014.

Now it seems SBS plans to continue its domination of Korean viewership as the two K-dramas now occupying the time slots in which Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim and The Legend of the Blue Sea previous occupied have debuted with high double-digit viewership ratings: Defendant and Saimdang, Light’s Diary. For this article, we will concentrate on the more popular of the two as of now, Saimdang, Light’s Diary, a period K-drama that utilizes the two timeline and dual role concepts seen in recent past SBS K-dramas.

For those who are unfamiliar with Saimdang, Light’s Diary which is also known as Saimdang, the Herstory, it is a period and modern time K-drama starring Lee Young Ae and Song Seung Heon. Young Ae plays Seo Ji Yoon, a Korean art history lecturer who is suddenly fired and disgraced when she chooses to be honest about the authenticity of an art piece that humiliates her superior. By happenstance, she discovers the diary of the historical figure of Shin Saimdang which is the key to unraveling the secret of a mysterious portrait painted by Lee Gyeom, a royal during her era. However, things take a turn for a twist when Ji Yoon ends up in a car accident. During her unconscious state, she relives a flashback to a previous era, the same one Saimdang lives in. It is there she starts to see in a previous life, she was Shin Saimdang. This “ability” will help her regain her lost status as a Korean art history lecturer.

Apparently, K-drama fans are loving Saimdang, Light’s Diary as it has achieved double-digit viewership ratings in its debut and second episodes. According to TNmS Media Korea, the first episode earned 13.9 percent for the nation and 16.0 percent for the Seoul National Capital Area while the second episode dropped a little for 11.8 percent for the nation and 13.4 percent for the Seoul National Capital Area. As for AGB Nielsen Korea, the first episode earned 16.3 percent for the nation and 16.6 percent for the Seoul National Capital Area and dropped a little for the second episode with 15.6 percent for the nation but remaining the same for the Seoul National Capital Area.

‘Saimdang, Light’s Diary’ seems to utilize concepts used in past SBS K-dramas, especially from ‘The Legend of the Blue Sea.’ [Image by the Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS)]
[WARNING: Spoilers Ahead! Skip To Final Paragraph To Avoid!] What is peculiar about Saimdang, Light’s Diary is the fact it utilizes concepts from previous SBS period and modern K-dramas such as Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo and The Legend of the Blue Sea and amplifies on those points. The first is two timelines jumping from past to present in which Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo jumped from the present to the Goryeo Dynasty and The Legend of the Blue Sea did the same but jumped back to the Joseon Dynasty instead. The second is dual roles in which IU played Go Ha Jin in the present and Hae Soo in the Goryeo Dynasty in Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo while six actors played dual roles in the present and Joseon Dynasty in The Legend of the Blue Sea.

In Saimdang, Light’s Diary, it switches back and forth from the present to Korea in the Joseon Dynasty. In the present, we have the situation of Seo Yi Joon trying to clear her name that caused her to lose her position as an art history lecturer. In the past, we learn more about Shin Saimdang’s life and romance with Lee Gyeom. Apparently, the K-drama is heading in a direction in which present day people may have lived another life during the Joseon Dynasty in which Yi Joon may be the reincarnated Shin Saimdang. Other dual roles include Choi Jong Hwan playing Min Jung Hak, the humiliated art director who is trying to destroy Ji Yoon’s professional life, and King Joongjong of the Joseon Dynasty.

Probably the most unique dual role is that of Lee Gyeom. Song Seung Heon may be playing Lee Gyeom in the Joseon Dynasty, but his younger self is played by Yang Se Jong who happens to also play Han Sang Hyun, the art student who stands up to Min Jung Hak for corruption and Ji Yoon’s neighbor. This is extremely smart because we might see both a traditional “oppa” relationship in the past and a “noona” relationship in the present. Since the Lee Gyeom is presumably older than Shin Saimdang in the Joseon Era but his reincarnation in the present is younger than the reincarnation of Shin Saimdang.

We can only wait and see what will happen in Saimdang, Light’s Diary within the coming 15 weeks as the K-drama is scheduled for 30 episodes. It airs on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10 p.m. KST on SBS. For those who do not have access to Korean public television, it can be viewed on DramaFever, Viki, and OnDemandKorea pending region.
