  • GOP governors have been sending migrants to eastern cities in protest of Biden's immigration policies. 
  • The lawmakers say Biden's administration isn't doing enough at the border. 
  • Former DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson said it's unfair to say the Biden administration is "lax" on immigration.

Former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said President Joe Biden's administration is being "unfairly" viewed as "lax" on immigration. 

"This administration, I believe, unfairly, is perceived as lax on border enforcement. In fact, we are sending back over 100,000 people a month and have been for the last two years, over 2 million people. The lesson I learned managing this issue is you've got to repeat yourself maybe 25 times before anybody will listen to you," Johnson said in an interview with CBS's "Face the Nation" host Margaret Brennan on Sunday. 

The former Obama administration official said that despite criticism from GOP governors on Biden's immigration policies, his administration has been sending people back at the border and advised the current administration to "continually stress that we are, in fact, with the machinery of government about as fast as we probably can. "

Johnson added that border security is a lot tougher since he served as DHS Secretary eight years ago. 

"We were dealing principally with the Northern Triangle countries Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Mexico. This problem has become hemispheric. In addition to those countries, you now have Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela who are not cooperating with us," Johnson said, adding that while border patrol capabilities have expanded, they're still struggling. 

His remarks come as several GOP governors began sending migrants to northern US cities. Last week, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis flew 50 migrants from Texas to Martha's Vineyard. In the past several weeks, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott sent around 8,000 migrants to Washington D.C. and another 2,200 to New York City. 

The moves were efforts to protest Biden's immigration policies. Johnson called the migrant relocation efforts a "political stunt."

"Well, there's a right way and a wrong way to do that, Margaret," Johnson said. "The wrong way is on 20 minutes notice to send people by bus or airplane to the Edgartown Airport or to mass [avenue] in front of the vice president's residence without giving local resources, NGOs, shelter's local government an opportunity to plan for how they intend to feed and clothe and house migrants."

He added: "What the governors of Florida and Texas are doing, frankly, is a political stunt and treating people like livestock."

Instead, it was 21-year-old Elenora “Lele” Pons, the model, actress, comedian, and YouTube star you’ve probably never heard of.

Pons has a brand deal with US makeup brand CoverGirl, walked for Dolce and Gabbana earlier this year in Milan, and even judged on the Miss Universe 2017 panel earlier this month.

She also has over 20 million Instagram followers and a net worth of $ 3 million (£2.2 million), according to Celebrity Net Worth.

Some 62 per cent of local authorities have reduced their expenditure on services such as road maintenance, street lights and school crossing patrols since 2016/17, according to the AA.

But the motoring organisation found that more than 200 councils are seeking to increase their parking income by raising fees for on and off street parking and residential permit schemes.

AA president Edmund King said: “It is clear that local authority budgets are being squeezed and highways budgets are almost the first in line to be cut.

“Drivers will be frustrated that in many councils the additional income from increased parking charges won’t be reinvested in improving the state of local roads.

“Far too often drivers are viewed by every level of government as wallets on wheels. We think it is time to redress the balance and drivers get the investment needed to bring our roads back up to scratch.”

AA research found that more than half (53 per cent) of councils have cut their spending on roads maintenance, with the average decrease worth £900,000.

The Greater London Authority made the largest reduction at £59.5 million, while North Yorkshire has made the largest cut outside the capital at £6.2 million.

A third (33 per cent) of local authorities have lowered their spending on the installation and running of street lights by an average of £300,000, which could lead to many lights being dimmed or switched off.

Meanwhile, one in four (24 per cent) councils have reduced budgets – typically by £200,000 – for road safety education programmes and school crossing patrols.

Mr King said: “Councils which have cut school crossing patrols may not have thought about the consequences.

“Parents may decide that it is safer to drive their children to school rather than walk, which would increase traffic on the roads. It would also create frustration for residents living next to the school as more parents will park on their street.”

“Dimming and switching off street lights is a subtle change which local authorities have chosen to take, but the consequences can be fatal.

Twitter announced its latest numbers for Q1 2017 this morning, and while its revenue made for grim reading, dropping 8 percent year-on-year, the company gave investors a little bit of good news — its monthly active user (MAU) base had grown by 9 million people (6 percent) on the previous quarter.

Tying into this growth is Twitter’s continued push into premium live video, as the social network strives to increase its stickiness particularly for those not signed-in to a Twitter account. In its latest letter to shareholders, the company says that it streamed more than 800 hours of live premium video in Q1, emanating from more than 450 events, and reaching 45 million unique viewers (logged-in and logged-out). Compared to 600 hours and 31 million viewers on the previous quarter, representing a growth of almost one-third, this too seems like a notable increase, but it may not tell the whole story. Indeed, a single unique viewership is defined by a video being at least 50 percent in-view on a user’s screen for at least two seconds, so it doesn’t necessarily mean that 45 million people watched an entire livestream, however the same criteria was used to define viewership in Q4 2016, so it does still hint at increased engagement.

Notably, 60 percent of its unique viewers were based outside the U.S., while 55% were under the age of 25 — to garner this data, however, Twitter could only use those who were logged in to their accounts.

Twitter has been turbocharging its efforts to becoming something akin to a global TV network, and last wear won a number of notable rights to stream premium content, including Thursday night NFL games, while it also partnered with BuzzFeed for a U.S. presidential election livestream, Disney for a live event around the launch of the new Star Wars movie, and the PGA for some golf coverage. Since then, Twitter has inked some other major video deals across sports, esports, and politics, and in Q1 it said that more than half (51 percent) of its viewing hours was for sports, while more than a third (35 percent) was news and politics.

It’s also worth noting here that Twitter is gearing up to being producing original content, so video will continue to play a core part in Twitter’s growth strategy moving forward. “We have made major investments in video over the past few years, and being able to present the breadth, depth, and quality of that content at Newfronts (IAB’s digital content conference) is the ultimate culmination of those efforts,” explained Twitter’s vice president of global revenue and operations, Matthew Derella, last month. “In 2017 and beyond, we are investing further in the video viewing experience, content development and collaborations, and video solutions for advertisers…”

 

Part of Twitter’s question to move into video involves taking over the livingroom too, and last September it launched a dedicated live video app for platforms including Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, and Xbox One.
