A group of tech-savvy Ukrainian soldiers is making drones and explosives to be used at the front line of the conflict in the country's Donbas region.

 • A team of young soldiers in Ukraine is building drones and explosives to be used on the front lines.
 • They are creating drones loaded with bombs to be used in combat in the Donbas region.
 • Some of the bombs come inscribed with messages like "happy birthday."

A new Agence France-Presse video shows a group of young Ukrainian troops making drones and bombs from a basement close to the front lines of the ongoing conflict in the country's Donbas region.

In the video, a group of around a dozen men in fatigues is seen working on small, remotely-piloted robots. AFP reported that the devices were scavenged from damaged aircraft.

The AFP video, which describes the men as a "group of 20-somethings," also shows a soldier named Varnak, who has been tasked with packing the robots with explosives.

"Their job is to make it move. My job is to make it explode, to fill it with explosives as effectively as possible so that it does the most damage to the enemy, or their tanks, or other military equipment," he told the outlet.

Also seen in the video were bombs made by the team, which come inscribed with personal messages to their Russian enemies, including the sarcastic "happy birthday" and the matter-of-fact "today is a Wednesday, man."

This picture shows bombs ready to be mounted on a drone in Bakhmut, Donetsk region, on September 25, 2022, amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
These message-inscribed bombs are meant to be dropped from drones.

Ukraine has been wresting large swathes of territory from the Russians, particularly in the Kharkiv region.

However, the skies over the highly-contested eastern Donbas have been the site of a fierce aerial battle, with the Ukrainians leaning on drones created by its fighters — many of whom are tech enthusiasts — to be flown in combat.

The US has also sent thousands of drones to Ukraine for use in the ongoing conflict. The figure includes 121 Phoenix Ghosts, a type of unmanned aerial system that can be launched by front-line troops for single attacks.

LG’s doomed Rollable phone appears on video to show us what we missed https://briefnews.eu/lgs-doomed-rollable-phone-appears-on-video-to-show-us-what-we-missed/ https://briefnews.eu/lgs-doomed-rollable-phone-appears-on-video-to-show-us-what-we-missed/#respond Wed, 21 Sep 2022 03:06:43 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/lgs-doomed-rollable-phone-appears-on-video-to-show-us-what-we-missed/ At CES 2021, LG wowed us with a short teaser of its innovative Rollable concept phone. Unfortunately, the company shuttered its smartphone division, and with it, plans of launching its rollable display phone were also put on ice forever. However, the LG Rollable has now been detailed in a video, complete with a market-ready retail package.

It appears that the phone was unceremoniously canceled right at the cusp of a public launch, which is a shame and a huge loss for phone enthusiasts. The LG Rollable had a lot going for it. The top and bottom edges have rail-inspired sliding mechanisms that extend/shrink the frame to reveal/hide the extra screen real estate.

LG Rollable front in standard form.

When the LG Rollable is being used like a regular phone, the expandable portion of the screen that wrapped around the edge and covered just over half of the rear panel was turned off. However, if you flip the device, it can be turned on and used as a regular screen, albeit with limited functionality, like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4.

With the rear portion of the screen activated, the doomed LG phone also offered users the flexibility to use it as a viewfinder for clicking selfies using the high-resolution rear cameras. The idea is reminiscent of Huawei’s Mate X series foldable phones.

LG rollable side profile.

LG was also apparently not a fan of a notch, holes, or an ugly floating cutout for the front camera array. Instead, the selfie camera is tucked neatly in the top-left corner of the frame, offering a truly full-screen experience.

Almost an LG phone salvation

Over at the back, the rollable segment blended almost seamlessly with a raised rib housing the dual selfie camera and the fingerprint sensor right beneath it. The biometric hardware is the reliable round sensor, instead of the cramped pill-shaped and side-mounted fingerprint sensors on modern-day phones.

There appears to be some kind of pressure or light sensor on the right edge that activates the display rolling and unrolling behavior. The mechanism appears to be quite robust, enough to move a couple of thick books as the screen unfolds.

However, a three-finger swipe from the left to the right edge, or vice versa, would also do the job. It also looks quite neat and almost flawlessly executed by LG’s engineers. Plus, there’s a one-tap quick toggle button system that can be accessed by swiping inward from the right edge to do the same.

Doing right by the tablet genes

As the display slides open to reveal a tablet-like expanse, the UI elements also expand accordingly. For example, the Settings app smoothly expands to a two-row format, a design element that Google showcased with Android 12L. LG also appears to have created a side panel-like system that we see on Samsung’s One UI skin, allowing users to access their favorite apps and tools in a jiffy.

LG Rollable hinge slide hardware.

The display in its natural state is a 6.8-inch unit, but when it’s rolled out, it offers a tablet-esque 7.4-inch panel. The lights are kept on by a 4,500mAh battery, but there’s no scope for wireless charging owing to the design.

The aspect ratio is on the taller side at 1.5:1, which is a far cry from the squarish approach taken by the likes of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the Oppo Find N. But the tall aspect ratio on the LG Rollable is also quite advantageous, because letterboxing is minimal while watching videos, and the situation with games would also be more palatable.

LG Rollable phone rear face.

As far as specs go, the rear camera setup includes a 64-megapixel main snapper capable of 8K video capture, sitting alongside a 12-megapixel ultra wide-angle shooter. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 keeps it ticking in tandem with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of onboard storage.

LG Rollable screen in expanded mode.

Tipping the scales at 285 grams, the LG Rollable fell in the same weight class as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4. Going by the level of software finesse and the solid hardware of the engineering prototype, it appears that the LG Rollable was nixed at the last moment.

Oppo is currently working on the same formula, but its own take on the concept got stuck in quality assessment hell after showcasing it to journalists and releasing a few tantalizing teaser videos.

Rep. Lauren Boebert confused the words "wanton" and "wonton" while reading a passage from the Bible, a video shows.

Boebert was reading a passage from Romans that referred to "wanton killing," meaning reckless killing. However, she pronounced it like "wonton" — the Chinese dumpling.

A video of the slip-up was posted by left-wing activist Twitter account PatriotTakes on Wednesday.

"I don't know what a wonton killing is," Boebert said after mispronouncing the word from the Bible reading, drawing laughter from the crowd. "I'm going to have to look that one up."

Boebert was speaking at at a Truth & Liberty Coalition's conference on September 9. The nonprofit was cofounded by right-wing pastor Andrew Wommack.

Earlier this year, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene had a similar slip-up with "gazpacho" and "Gestapo." In February, Greene accused House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of having "gazpacho police," confusing a cold Spanish soup with Nazi Germany's secret police.

Boebert's gaffe prompted some mocking responses online.

"Wonton killing is a shameful abuse of our civil right by the gazpacho police," wrote one person on Twitter.

Former GOP Rep. Denver Riggleman took to Twitter, writing, "Everyone should download the hit song 'Wonton Violence' by the Notorious MSG to show solidarity."

Boebert did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment that was sent outside regular business hours.

Video games to play for fans of House of the Dragon and Lord of the Rings https://briefnews.eu/video-games-to-play-for-fans-of-house-of-the-dragon-and-lord-of-the-rings/ https://briefnews.eu/video-games-to-play-for-fans-of-house-of-the-dragon-and-lord-of-the-rings/#respond Fri, 09 Sep 2022 19:09:20 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/video-games-to-play-for-fans-of-house-of-the-dragon-and-lord-of-the-rings/ It’s arguably never been a better time to be a fantasy fan, with big-name series like Game of Thrones, The Lord of the Rings, The Witcher, and more all in the limelight in some form or another. This year has been a massive one in particular with House of the Dragon and The Rings of Power airing at the same time, but thanks to the video game medium, there are plenty of other ways for genre enthusiasts to indulge themselves.

Several talented developer studios have crafted painstakingly detailed fantasy worlds worth getting invested in ranging a diverse catalog of franchises, with, unsurprisingly, the RPG genre lending itself best to this type of setting. And from the Middle-earth games to FromSoftware’s recent collaboration with George R. R. Martin, there’s an embarrassment of riches for fans of both The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and House of the Dragon.

Elden Ring

A ghost sitting on a cliff.

It’s without a doubt the most topical recommendation for fantasy buffs in the modern age of gaming, and FromSoftware’s latest RPG epic Elden Ring will certainly be one to please House of the Dragon/A Song of Ice and Fire fans. It’s in part due to the blockbuster duo of game director Hidetaka Miyazaki and series writer George R. R. Martin building this world. The Lands Between is set in a dark fantasy universe that will be familiar for both Game of Thrones fans and those of FromSoft’s previous work (Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls, etc.), with the creative team’s signature subdued yet immersive storytelling and worldbuilding.

It follows the Tarnished protagonist being called back from exile to help rebuild the shattered Golden Order of the gods that banished them in the first place. Elden Ring features have arguably set the next highest benchmark for open-world game design, with something exciting worth discovering in every possible direction. Combat-wise, it blends the action of Dark Souls III with Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice to complement its thoroughly rewarding character progression systems.

Elden Ring is available now for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor/War

Split image of Talion combined with the wraith in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and War cover arts.

It would be impossible to overlook Monolith Productions’ Middle-earth duology for diehards of J. R. R. Tolkien’s expansive fantasy work. Ironically, both Shadow of Mordor and War takes a dark fantasy spin on Tolkien’s usual work and are set in their own timeline, separated from the mainline continuity. Mordor is an open-world action-adventure game that follows a Gondorian Ranger named Talion who finds himself bonded with the Elf Wraith Celebrimbor as they both embark on a quest for vengeance for their murdered families, while War aims their blood feud against Sauron himself.

The gameplay takes worthy inspiration from Rocksteady’s acclaimed Batman: Arkham series and combines it with its original and ingenious Nemesis System, letting players defeat and overtake interconnected Orc tribes that also affect the hierarchy among themselves in the background.

Both Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and War are available on modern hardware through PS4, XBO, and PC.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Geralt drawing his sword in The Witcher 3 promo art.

While, narratively speaking, Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire and wider stories are structured differently than Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher series, House of the Dragon fans should still feel at home with the grounded and rich dark fantasy world of the latter. It’s been deservedly lauded since its 2015 launch, as developer CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt still stands as one of the most engrossing modern-day action RPGs.

The political turmoil and wars pass through in the background, as Geralt of Rivia’s quest takes him across the lands of The Continent, searching for his surrogate daughter before the titular and prophetic Wild Hunt capture her for her latent powers. The plot is more intimate in scale, rewarding role-playing mechanics that shape the stories and featuring compelling character writing throughout and a wealth of story content — including the equally acclaimed Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine DLC expansions.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is available now for PS4, XBO, Nintendo Switch, and PC — with a current-gen remaster for PS5, XSX|S, and PC releasing in late 2022 at no extra cost for current owners.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

The Dragonborn poised for combat with a dragon's shadow looming.

While it’s become something of a tired joke in the industry, Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is undoubtedly one of the most enduring games today. It’s been re-released and ported multiple times, but the acclaim it received isn’t without merit. The game was a landmark for open-world design when it was released in 2011 during the PS3 and Xbox 360 console generation, as it featured a dynamic environment filled with unique interactions, items, and stories to discover.

Likewise, The Elder Scrolls series as a whole wears its Tolkien inspirations on its sleeve in terms of atmosphere, art direction, and storytelling conventions. Playing as the Dragonborn is highly customizable through a variety of free-flowing character builds, making journeying to defeat the draconic World Eater Alduin endlessly replayable.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is available on modern hardware through PS4, PS5, XBO, XSX|S, Switch, and PC.

Dark Souls trilogy

Split image of Dark Souls, Dark Souls II, and Dark Souls III key art.

Even with Elden Ring elevating the game, FromSoftware’s milestone Dark Souls trilogy is still more than worth going back to. House of the Dragon fans should appreciate the grim, dark fantasy world of the series, as it essentially blends fantasy with a post-apocalyptic setting. The Dark Souls series begins ages after Lord Gwyn, the first Lord of Cinder, committed this universe’s “original sin” by cursing it with a cyclical Age of Fire that leaves people and monsters as undead husks by its dying days.

Lore, story, and world-building are expectedly subtle here as well, but it’s incredibly rewarding to learn about and piece together for fantasy fans. Aside from the inventive level designs, the grueling challenge and spectacles of boss fights are major gameplay standouts.

Dark Souls: Remastered, Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin, and Dark Souls III are all available on modern hardware through PS4, XBO, Switch (Remastered), and PC.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Link standing on a hilltop overlooking the land of Hyrule.

The Legend of Zelda is one of Nintendo’s pillars in the gaming industry, as well as an icon of the medium as a whole. From the beginning, the series took clear inspiration from Tolkien’s work on The Lord of the Rings with its vibrant and diverse high fantasy land of Hyrule, tone, and narrative style. Especially so with the series following the generational battle between Link and the Demon King Ganon and its proclivity for detailed topography.

Breath of the Wild for the Nintendo Switch is perhaps the best encapsulation of these features, as it has a stunning open world that invites open-ended exploration and beautiful vistas. The game combines The Legend of Zelda‘s usual action-adventure formula with those of the action RPG subgenre in a high fantasy wrapping that fans of The Rings of Power should feel satisfied with.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is available now exclusively for the Switch, with a (still) unnamed sequel planned to release in the first half of 2023.

Divinity: Original Sin II

The diverse cast of playable characters in Divinity: Original Sin II.

The CRPG subgenre is one of the more niche of the greater roleplaying genre, but they’ve seen a welcome resurgence in the modern gaming space. Developer Larian Studios (which is currently helming Baldur’s Gate III) is responsible for a good deal of that, as Divinity: Original Sin II was widely acclaimed as one of the best RPGs in general. The game built off every positive aspect of the original, crafting an experience with an excruciating level of detail.

The player takes on the role of a protagonist and a supporting cast of characters as they attempt to fight back the invading legion of monsters entering the main world from the Void. It’s a colorful and expansive world with engaging adventures that Lord of the Rings fans should appreciate, and it has some of the most satisfying and layered role-playing mechanics in a game. Strategic turn-based combat that rewards creativity and choice-driven narratives combine for a sprawling high fantasy experience.

Demon’s Souls (remake)

Main character from Demon's Souls.

The “Souls-like” subgenre progenitor, FromSoftware’s Demon’s Souls on the PS3, was critically acclaimed and became a cult classic in 2009. It laid the groundwork for the formula that would eventually evolve into Elden Ring; though, the game can admittedly feel dated and cumbersome by today’s standards. Thankfully, in-house PlayStation studio Bluepoint Games developed a revamped top-to-bottom remake that keeps in spirit the level and gameplay design of the original.

The Demon’s Souls accomplishes this through tasteful quality-of-life enhancements to gameplay and jaw-dropping graphics thanks to the PS5’s hardware horsepower. Tonally, the same rules apply for fans of House of the Dragon looking for a similarly dark experience. It has all the backstory and subtle environmental storytelling expected of a Souls game, with the chosen hero protagonist summoned to the kingdom of Boletaria to slay its fallen and corrupted king and the greater evil that’s shrouded the world in the soul-eating Deep Fog.

Demon’s Souls is available now exclusively for PS5.

House of the Dragon is available to watch on HBO and HBO Max, while The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is available on Amazon Prime Video, with both series premiering new episodes weekly.

The first US video game studio to unionize is shutting down https://briefnews.eu/the-first-us-video-game-studio-to-unionize-is-shutting-down/ https://briefnews.eu/the-first-us-video-game-studio-to-unionize-is-shutting-down/#respond Wed, 07 Sep 2022 21:49:43 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-first-us-video-game-studio-to-unionize-is-shutting-down/ The first video game studio in the US to unionize is shutting down. On Wednesday, Beast Breaker developer Vodeo Games announced it had failed to secure funding to produce an additional release beyond its debut title. “Despite a year of avid efforts, we’ve been unable to secure funding for our next project from publishers and investors,” Vodeo Games said in a tweet spotted by Polygon. “As such, we’ve run out of funds and aren’t able to keep the team together — and there simply is no Vodeo without our incredible team.”

Vodeo Games was founded in 2021 by Threes! designer Asher Vollmer. The studio released its first game that same year. According to Vodeo’s website, it had been working on a new project before today’s announcement. The studio will complete work on the Steam version of Beast Breaker before closing shop.

At the end of last year, Vodeo’s all-remote team of 13 successfully unionized with Code-CWA, the Communication Workers of America's Campaign to Organize Digital Employees. Despite the management of Vodeo Games recognizing the studio’s union, the two sides never came to a bargaining agreement. According to Vodeo Workers United, negotiations came to an end when it became apparent the studio could not secure additional funding. The group said it would share what it learned with other industry workers to help them organize their workplaces.

Since workers at Vodeo unionized, employees at other studios have attempted to follow suit. Most notably, there’s the QA division at Activision's Raven Software, which voted in May to form the Game Workers Alliance. More recently, quality assurance staff at Blizzard Albany, formerly Vicarious Visions, filed for a union election.

Every video game delay that’s happened in 2022 https://briefnews.eu/every-video-game-delay-thats-happened-in-2022/ https://briefnews.eu/every-video-game-delay-thats-happened-in-2022/#respond Sun, 04 Sep 2022 10:20:03 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/every-video-game-delay-thats-happened-in-2022/ Ever since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, video game release dates have become less and less certain. While developers have had time to adjust, working from home still has its challenges, and sometimes release dates are just too ambitious for development teams to meet. We saw plenty of delays in 2020 and 2021, and if the first few months of this year are any indication, frequent delays are a trend that will continue in 2022.

With so many games getting delayed, it can be hard to keep track of what’s been pushed back and when to now expect it. This roundup will keep track of all the major video game delays that have happened so far in 2022.

King Arthur: Knight’s Tale (April 26)

A knight from King Arthur: Knight's Tale.

King Arthur: Knight’s Tale is a dark fantasy tactics RPG based on the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. It’s currently in early access on Steam and was supposed to get a full release there on February 15. Developer NeocoreGames chose to push the full release back to March 29, 2022, in January 2022 as the “extra weeks of development and polish will help to deliver the strongest possible version of King Arthur: Knight’s Tale for its fans.” It got pushed back again to April 26 (the date on which it ended up launching) so the developer could continue to polish and localize King Arthur: Knight’s Tale. It launched on PC on that date, and will also come to PS5 and Xbox Series X in the future.

Evil Dead: The Game (May 13)

Ash and another playable character stand together in Evil Dead: The Game

A multiplayer-focused game based on the Evil Dead franchise was created by Saber Interactive and originally going to come out in February. Before it could release, though, Saber decided to push the game back to May 13. “This delay gives our team the time they need to get things just right, so your boomstick will be polished, fully loaded, and ready to blast Deadites on that Friday the 13th of May,” the developers said in a tweet about the delay. The game did eventually make its planned release date.

Roller Champions (May 25)

Roller Champions: E3 2019 Official World Premiere Trailer | Ubisoft [NA]

Ubisoft announced this unique 3v3 competitive roller derby game in 2019, but like many Ubisoft games, it has suffered many delays. This game in particular has stayed out of the public eye as Ubisoft continued to refine it through closed betas. It was through the Discord for these closed betas that fans learned that Ubisoft pushed Roller Champions‘ release back from “early 2022” to “late spring.” In May, Ubisoft finally confirmed a free-to-play launch for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X would take place on May 25. A Nintendo Switch version followed on June 21, although Amazon Luna and Google Stadia ports of the game are undated.

Starship Troopers: Terran Command (June 16)

Soldiers kill Arachnids in Starship Troopers: Terran Command.

It seemed like Starship Troopers: Terran Command, a real-time strategy game based on the satirical film, would launch on March 31, but publisher Slitherine Games pushed the release back to June 16 just 10 days before launch. The post revealing the delay confirmed that this title was content-complete but the developers just need more time to polish the game and fix bugs before they put it in the hands of players. It made that June 16 release date and received mixed reviews.

Redout 2 (June 16)

Hello Redout fans,

We know you have been eagerly awaiting the release of Redout 2 later this month, but unfortunately, the fastest racer in the universe needs just a little more development time before it’s ready to go and will now launch on June 16 on PC, PS5|4, XSX|X1 & Switch pic.twitter.com/ttlu68cTEZ

— Redout 2 (@redout2game) May 20, 2022

Just a week before its intended May 26 launch, developer 34BigThings decided to push back this futuristic racing game by a couple of weeks. “This will help ensure we’re firing on all cylinders out of the gate and delivering the best gameplay experience for everyone,” the developer explained in a tweet. Thankfully, the delay wasn’t too long as Redout 2 successfully launched on June 16.

MX vs. ATV Legends (June 28)

An ATV races in MX vs. ATV Legends.

The latest entry in Rainbow Studios’ long-running offroad racing series MX vs. ATV Legends got a slight delay ahead of its initial release date. Originally slated for May 24, publisher THQ Nordic decided to push the game back to June 28. “In our case, we needed to choose between speed or quality, and the decision was simple,” Rainbow Studios CEO Lenore Gilbert wrote about the delay. “We want to make sure that when MX vs. ATV Legends comes out, it is the highest level of quality that Rainbow Studios can offer.” The game made that June release date.

Endling — Extinction is Forever (July 19)

A vixen fox walks with her cubs in Endling - Extinction is Forever.

Ending — Extinction is Forever is an indie game about a mother fox trying to protect her children from going extinct in an increasingly mechanical world. It was originally supposed to release in the spring of 2022, but developer Herobeat Games pushed it back to an undisclosed time in 2022 to polish the game further. To make up for the delay, Herobeat revealed an eco-friendly physical version of the game. Ultimately, the game released on July 19.

Tw0 Point Campus (August 9)

Two Point Campus | Developer Vision

Sega’s follow-up to Two Point Hospital is Two Point Campus, a comedic university management game. It was originally supposed to release on May 17, but Sega decided to push the game back to August 9, just a month before launch. “Our ambition from the start has been to release Two Point Campus across all PC and console platforms simultaneously to the quality and standard that our community expects from us,” game director Mark Webley said in a blog post about the delay. “This means we will need a little bit more time with Two Point Campus to make sure we deliver the best possible game that can be enjoyed equally on all platforms. We will use these additional three months to optimize Two Point Campus for all platforms.” The game made its revised August 9 date.

Rumbleverse (August 11)

The weird melee-combat-focused battle royale Rumbleverse from Iron Galaxy Studios and Epic Games was indefinitely delayed. It was supposed to come out on February 15, 2022, but the team decided to push back the release following a First Look session in December. “We’re excited about the game we’re making — and we’re glad you are, too — but there’s more we want to do to perfect the experience,” the developers said in a blog post. “We’re going to take the time to make sure we can get that right.” Iron Galaxy and Epic Games continued to hold closed tests for the game before launching it on August 11.

Immortality (August 30)

Some news: pic.twitter.com/ZbxGHPQ0wt

— IMMORTALITY (new Sam Barlow game, OUT NOW) (@HalfMermaid) July 13, 2022

Sam Barlow, the creator of games like Her Story and Telling Lies, delayed his next title, Immortality, slightly. Originally set to release on July 26, its launch was pushed back to August 30. In a tweet, Barlow explained that the delay would allow the development team at Half Mermaid to “spend a month more to ensure the experience is as polished as possible.” Considering that the game launched to glowing praise, the delay seemed to be a good decision.

Gloomwood (September 6)

We're sorry to have to delay Gloomwood a few weeks, however we're sure you can wait.

But don't just take it from me! Listen to legendary star of stage and screen, Sir Malcolm McDowell. pic.twitter.com/lFgayx1xtO

— Dave @ Gloomwood (@DaveOshry) August 2, 2022

Gloomwood is an immersive sim with a supernatural twist inspired by games like Thief. It’s entering Steam early access, but publisher New Blood Interactive had to delay its launch by just three weeks to September 6. To have some fun with the delay announcement, New Blood Interactive commissioned Malcolm McDowell to read the delay message via Cameo. This certainly takes the cake as one of the weirdest delay announcements of the year.

Life is Strange Arcadia Bay Collection (September 27)

Chloe in her bedroom in Life is Strange Arcadia Bay Collection.

While Life is Strange: Remastered Collection came out for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Google Stadia on February 1, the Nintendo Switch version was delayed less than two weeks before its intended release. Square Enix said to expect the Switch version of Life is Strange: Remastered Collection sometime “later this year,” back in January, and over half a year later they confirmed a release date and name change. The collection, which includes both Life is Strange Remastered and Life is Strange: Before the Storm Remastered, will release for Nintendo Switch on September 27 as the Life is Strange Arcadia Bay Collection.

Dying Light 2: Stay Human — Cloud Version (summer 2022)

Buildings burn in Dying Light 2.

While Techland’s Dying Light 2 hit its target for a February 4 release on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X after several delays, the cloud version for Nintendo Switch isn’t so lucky. In January, this port was pushed back “to provide fans with the gaming experience at the level they deserve and that Techland wants to provide.” Techland wanted to release this port within six months of the original date, but it is as yet undated.

Sons of the Forest (October)

Sons Of The Forest Trailer 3

Developer Endnight Games was originally going to release Sons of the Forest, a follow-up to the popular survival-horror game The Forest, on May 20. The developer ultimately decided to push the game back to October, explaining in a tweet, “We have realized that our May 2022 release date for Sons Of The Forest was overly ambitious. To be able to deliver our vision of the next step in survival games, we’ve decided to move our release date to October 2022.”

Evil West (November 22)

— Focus Entertainment (@Focus_entmt) August 16, 2022

Evil West is an ambitious cooperative supernatural western game that got pushed back by a couple of months ahead of its initially slated September release. Evil West will now launch on November 22, with developer Flying Wild Hog and publisher Focus Entertainment saying the delay is necessary to ensure the game is a polished experience on every console it’s shipping on.

Warhammer 40K: Darktide (November 30 for PC, TBA for Xbox)

pic.twitter.com/KIVYkrCApT

— Warhammer 40K: Darktide (@Darktide40K) July 28, 2022

Fatshark and Level Infinite’s sci-fi cooperative shooter Warhammer 40K: Darktide was originally going to release simultaneously across PC and Xbox Series X in September. Now, the PC version of the game is pushed back to November 30, 2022, while the Xbox Series X version does not have a new release date yet. “While we have been humbled by the great feedback on the game so far, we also need more time to improve stability and performance, and to mature key systems,” Fatshark CEO Martin Wahlund said of the delay.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S (Q4 2022)

Geralt looking at mountain in The Witcher 3.

We’ve known about the PS5 and Xbox Series X port of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt for some time, but it has yet to release. It was originally slated for 2021 before being pushed back to Q2 2022. Unfortunately, the port was indefinitely delayed in April when CD Projekt Red decided to take the project away from Saber Interactive and develop it in-house. In May, CD Projekt announced that the project would finally release in Q4 2022.

— Forspoken (@Forspoken) July 6, 2022

Forspoken is an exciting new fantasy IP from Square Enix. While it was originally supposed to launch in May 2021, Square Enix decided to push the game back to October 11 about two months before its intended launch. At the time, Square Enix explained in a tweet that the developers would use the extra months to polish the experience further to ensure it’s memorable for players. Unfortunately, the game did not make that release window either as Square Enix confirmed in July that Forspoken would now launch on January 24, 2023, “as a result of ongoing discussions with key partners.” Curiously, the move was announced within an hour of God of War Ragnarok receiving its November 9 release date.

Deliver Us Mars (February 2, 2023)

— Deliver Us Mars (@DeliverUsMars) August 15, 2022

A little over a month before the sci-fi adventure game was supposed to launch, KeokeN Interactive made the decision to delay Deliver Us Mars from a September 27, 2022 release to a February 2, 2023 launch. KeokeN Interactive made the decision to delay Deliver Us Mars because they want to make sure “this experience is the best it can be at launch” and pushing back its release a bit will “ensure that we are able to live up to that ambition.”

Hogwarts Legacy (February 10, 2023)

— Hogwarts Legacy (@HogwartsLegacy) August 12, 2022

The long-awaited and controversial Hogwarts Legacy was originally slated for a holiday 2022 release, but it will not make that deadline. WB Games confirmed that its release date for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S would be February 10, 2023, on Twitter, and said that the extra time will allow them to “deliver the best possible game experience.” A Nintendo Switch version of Hogwarts Legacy is also in development but does not have a new release date.

The Day Before (March 1, 2023)

The Day Before | Official GeForce RTX 4K Gameplay Reveal

Survival MMO The Day Before gained notoriety by becoming the most-wish-listed game on Steam, but that added pressure also caused developer Fntastic to push the game back from June 21 to March 1, 2023. The added time will allow it to convert the game to Unreal Engine 5. “Feeling and understanding the great responsibility that we face, with enormous gratitude in our hearts, [we are] pleased to announce that The Day Before is switching to the new Unreal Engine 5 technology!” Fntastic told IGN. “The transition to a more advanced and adapted open-worlds engine will make the gameplay of The Day Before even more fantastic.” The game was later met with controversy when Fntastic revealed that unpaid volunteers work on game.

— SEASON: A letter to the future (@SeasonTheGame) July 29, 2022

Atmospheric adventure and exploration game Season: A Letter to the Future won’t make it out in 2022. Capping off a troubled development, the developers at Scavengers Studio need a little more time to finish the game and will now release it in Q1 2023. “We want to ensure that we are able to push for quality without it affecting the wellbeing of our team,” a tweet from the development team says. “Season has always been a labor of love for the team and this additional time will let us polish and refine the game to make it the special experience we set out for it to be.”

Kerbal Space Program 2 (early 2023)

Kerbal Space Program 2 Timing Update

The sequel to the quirky space flight simulation game Kerbal Space Program has gotten pushed back another year. Originally planned to launch in early 2020, this game has suffered from multiple delays and a controversial change in developers. Development of the game looks to be on track, but Creative Director Nate Simpson revealed in a video that Intercept Games needs a little more time to improve the game’s quality across all supported platforms. The PC version of Kerbal Space Program 2 will launch sometime in early 2023 (before March 31, according to VGC), with the console versions of the game following later on next year. Hopefully, this is the final delay that Kerbal Space Program 2 suffers.

— Tchia (Awaceb) – Wishlist it! (@awaceb) May 20, 2022

Tchia is an open-world adventure game set in a beautiful tropical archipelago where players can take control of any object or animal they come across. Unfortunately, developer Awaceb revealed on Twitter in May that the game would be released in 2022; instead, it will launch in early 2023. The developers say the additional development time enables them to “really polish every aspect of the game and flesh out all the little details that we know make Tchia a really special experience.”

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn (early 2023)

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn – Gameplay Reveal

When A44 Games and Kepler Interactive revealed their “gunpowder fantasy” RPG Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn earlier this year, it was supposed to still come out in 2022. When we saw the game at the Xbox and Bethesda Game Showcase on June 12 though, its release date had shifted slightly to 2023. No reason was given for the delay, but that showing did confirm that Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn will be a day one Xbox Game Pass title when it launches in early 2023.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns (by March 31, 2023)

Characters in Marvel's Midnight Suns.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns got another delay. Originally intended to release in March 2022, Take-Two Interactive pushed it back to October 2022. Now, we’ve learned that the game is delayed once again. A new date has not been shared just yet, but we know it’s still slated for Take-Two’s current fiscal year. That means that Firaxis has until March 31, 2023, to launch Marvel’s Midnight Suns. Hopefully, this delay gives Firaxis the time it needs to finish polishing this card-based Marvel strategy game.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League (spring 2023)

Harley Quinn lays down while speaking to Amanda Waller in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League's reveal trailer

Many Warner Bros. Games titles were hit by delays in 2021, so it’s not a surprise that Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice has been pushed back despite its appearance at The Game Awards 2021. On February 2, 2021, Bloomberg reported that the game was quietly pushed to 2023. Its delay gives the developers more time to work on the title and frees up space for 2022 WB Games’ other 2022 titles like Gotham Knights and Hogwarts Legacy (both of which were supposed to launch last year) to shine. Its new release window has since been confirmed to be Spring 2022.

EA is finally making another golf video game, which it hasn’t made since 2015. While the revival was originally intended for spring 2022, EA confirmed in March that the EA Sports PGA Tour will now come out in spring 2023. No reason was given for this shift, but EA is probably just taking the time to ensure they get this revival right.

Sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (spring 2023)

Launch Timing Update for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Sequel

The still-unnamed sequel of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild reappeared at E3 2021 with a 2022 release window, but that was not meant to be. On March 29, 2022, Nintendo released a video in which series producer Eiji Aonuma explained that the title will now release in spring 2023. “In order to make this game’s experience something special, the entire development team is continuing to work diligently on this game, so please wait a while longer,” he said.

Blazing Strike (spring 2023)

It's gut-wrenching to admit but #BlazingStrike's release date has been moved back to Spring 2023. However this delay will help polish the game to ensure the best game experience possible (maybe with crossplay), so I really hope you guys stick around a little longer. 🙏❤️💔❤️ https://t.co/DBRTJWOg2D

— Blazing Strike coming Spring 2023 to consoles & PC (@RareBreedMG) August 5, 2022

At EVO 2022, Akysys Games and RareBreed announced that Blazing Strike, an upcoming fighting game clearly inspired by the look of classic 2D titles from the SNES, Sega Genesis, and NEO-GEO era, would no longer release this fall. Now, Blazing Strike will release for PC, PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch sometime in 2023. Although RareBreed called the delay “gut-wrenching” to announce, it did admit on Twitter that this extra time may allow them to implement crossplay.

Planet of Lana (Spring 2023)

Planet of Lana Xbox Game Pass Trailer

Planet of Lana is a beautiful-looking, cinematic, sci-fi platformer that impressed during events like Day of the Devs. While it was originally slated to come out in 2022, developer Wishfully and publisher Thunderful decided to push the game back to spring 2023 so they could have additional time to refine the experience. When it launches, Planet of Lana will be on Xbox Game pass across PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Redfall (first half of 2023)

Redfall

Arkane’s vampiric game Redfall got a significant delay from its original summer 2022 release window. This cooperative shooter is definitely a major shift from Arkane’s typical immersive sim fair, so it’s not too surprising that they need more time to polish it before launch. The game will now release sometime during the first half of 2023.

Starfield (first half of 2023)

An update on Redfall and Starfield. pic.twitter.com/pqDtx26Uu6

— Bethesda (@bethesda) May 12, 2022

One of the most notable delays of this year is Starfield. Unveiled with a November 11, 2022, release date at E3 2021, Bethesda seemed adamant about not pushing this game back. Ultimately, Bethesda game studios decided that the game needed more time and pushed it back to 2023, alongside Redfall. “The teams at Arkane Austin (Redfall) and Bethesda Game Studios (Starfield) have incredible ambitions for their games, and we want to ensure that you receive the best, most polished versions of them,” Bethesda tweeted about the delay.

— Homeworld (@HomeworldGame) June 10, 2022

Gearbox and Blackbird Interactive were set to revive Homeworld, a classic sci-fi RTS series, with a third entry in 2022. Unfortunately, they made the decision to push Homeworld 3 back to the first half of 2023 so that Gearbox and Blackbird could “make good on our commitment to quality in a healthy and sustainable way for all those involved.” Thankfully, we won’t have to wait too long to get another look at the game as it will be at Gamescom.

Nightingale (first half of 2023)

An update on our Early Access release pic.twitter.com/LLFLCP3f6h

— Nightingale (@PlayNightingale) August 11, 2022

Nightingale is an ambitious survival game headed by a former BioWare developer, and it needs a little more time in the oven. Developer Inflexion Games confirmed the delay of Nightingale’s early access launch from 2022 to the “first half of 2023” on Twitter. Ultimately, the game was delayed because the developers want to bring the game over from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5 ahead of launch and need more time “to make key improvements, bolster content, and polish gameplay.”

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk (summer 2023)

About the release: We are convinced that releasing the game this year will not take it to a level where we would be personally satisfied with. To create a fulfilling and unique game we are extending the development time of Bomb Rush Cyberfunk to summer 2023.

— Team Reptile (@ReptileGames) August 31, 2022

Team Reptile is currently working on Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, a spiritual successor to the cult classic Sega series Jet Set Radio. While Bomb Rush Cyberfunk was supposed to come out in 2022, Team Reptile made the decision to push the game to summer 2023 because it is “convinced that releasing the game this year will not take it to a level where we would be personally satisfied with.

Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown (2023)

Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown – Welcome to Hong Kong Island

Nacon’s revival of the classic open-world racing series Test Drive Unlimited was originally supposed to come out in September 2022 but was pushed back to 2023 in May. “With so much support from fans of the series, we know many of you will be disappointed, but our goal with Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown is to make it the most polished gaming experience in the franchise by spending more time on its development,” the developers said in a Steam blog post. With this delay, Nacon also canceled the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game, making it a current-gen console exclusive.

Replaced (2023)

— REPLACED (@REPLACEDGame) May 25, 2022

Sad Cat’s Replaced made a strong first impression at the Xbox E3 2021 show because of its beautiful pixel art style. While the developer planned to release the game in 2022, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine “heavily impacted” development as most of Sad Cat is based out of Ukraine and Belarus. Development paused as some of the team relocated, so Sad Cat and publisher Coatsink made the decision to delay Replaced to 2023 because they “are prioritizing both the physical and mental health of the developers by not forcing the original deadlines that have been unexpectedly impacted.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink (2023)

GRANBLUE FANTASY: Relink – Teaser Trailer

Granblue Fantasy: Relink is supposed to be the mobile game franchise’s big break on consoles as an action-heavy RPG with a grander scope than anything Japanese developer Cygames has done before. That said, the game’s been delayed multiple times. Originally intended to be released in 2019, the game was pushed back to 2022 and once again to 2023. Producer Yuito Kimura says on the game’s website that this delay will let Cygames “further polish and optimize details and gameplay as we approach our final stretch,” mainly focused on things like balancing and debugging.

Ark 2 (2023)

ARK 2 Trailer

When Studio Wildcard first announced Ark 2 in 2020, it said the game would come out in 2022. That is no longer the case for this survival sandbox game that has dinosaurs and will star Vin Diesel and Moana actress Auli’i Cravalho, though. When the game reemerged at the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase on June 12, it had a 2023 early access release window. Hopefully, Studio Wildcard will hit this new release target.

The Invincible (2023)

The Invincible – First Gameplay Showcase

When Starward Industries first revealed The Invincible, a first-person sci-fi adventure game, it was supposed to release on PC and next-generation consoles in 2021. That didn’t happen, and when the game reemerged at this year’s PC Gaming Show, we learned that 11 bit Studios is now publishing the game and that it will be released in 2023.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl (2023)

A Stalker from Stalker 2 look off in the distance with a radioactive symbol behind him.

The first notable delay of 2022 was a lengthy one. The highly anticipated postapocalyptic shooter S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl got an April 28, 2022, release date at E3 2021 but was pushed all the way to December 8. “These additional seven months of development are needed to fulfill our vision and achieve the desired state of the game,” developer GSC Game World stated in a tweet about the delay. The news came just shortly after the studio announced it would add NFTs to the title and subsequently canceled the plans 24 hours later due to backlash. During the Xbox and Bethesda Game Showcase Extended, GSC Game World then confirmed that the game was delayed to 2023 due to Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, like Replaced.

— Sea of Stars (@seaofstarsgame) June 30, 2022

Sea of Stars is a promising turn-based RPG inspired by Chrono Trigger. Unfortunately, The Messenger and Sea of Stars developer Sabotage thinks the game needs more time in the oven. A delay from winter 2022 to 2023 was announced on Twitter on June 30, and Sabotage says the delay will benefit the “quality of life for our team and the quality of the finished game.”

— Zynga Star Wars (@ZyngaStarWars) July 18, 2022

Star Wars: Hunters is a competitive multiplayer game that was supposed to release on iOS, Android, and Nintendo Switch in 2021 before being pushed to this year. Now, Zynga announced on Twitter that the game wouldn’t arrive until 2023. “To ensure we meet the high expectations we are setting for fans globally and ourselves as developers, we have made the decision to delay the worldwide launch of Star Wars: Hunters,” Zynga explained in the Tweet.

Arc Raiders (2023)

An update from the team: pic.twitter.com/0J3imUtZP4

— ARC Raiders (@ARCRaidersGame) August 8, 2022

Arc Raiders is an ambitious cooperative multiplayer shooter from Embark Studios, a studio founded by former EA executive Patrick Söderlund. While Arc Raiders got a 2022 release window alongside its The Game Awards 2021 reveal, Embark Studios decided to push the game to 2023. Söderlund explained in a Medium post that another Embark Studios project, a competitive FPS codenamed Project Discovery, is progressing through development at a faster rate. As a result, Embark Studios will launch Project Discovery first before moving on to Arc Raiders in 2023.

Metal Slug Tactics is a turn-based strategy spin-off of one of SNK’s classic shooter series, but we haven’t seen much of the game since its 2021 reveal. It’s no surprise that it needs more time. SNK confirmed that Metal Slug Tactics won’t come out until sometime in 2023.

— Microids (@Microids_off) August 22, 2022

Microids originally intended to release Flashback 2, a sequel to a very influential cinematic platformer from the 1990s, in winter 2022. In August 2022, though, the team announced on Twitter that it had delayed the game to 2023 so it could live up to player expectations. A specific date will be shared at a later time.

UFL (2023)

UFL is attempting to take on FIFA as a free-to-play and more simulation-accurate alternative. While developer Strikerz Inc. initially planned to release the game in 2022, its CEO Eugene Nashilov explained in an August 2022 development update video that the team would need a little more time and would now release UFL in 2023. The game is 80% complete according to Nashilov’s estimations, and Strikerz plans to reveal a more specific release window in December.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora (between April 2023 and March 2024)

A Na'vi in the jungles of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.

Initially thought to be launching around the release of Avatar: The Way of Water, Ubisoft’s licensed Avatar game Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora will no longer make it out this year. It has been pushed to Ubisoft’s 2023 to 2024 fiscal year. This means the game could release any time between April 2023 and March 2024. Ubisoft also confirmed that a “smaller unannounced premium game” was pushed into this new window as well, with reports indicating its Assassin’s Creed Rift. “While this additional development time is a reflection of the current ongoing constraints on productions across the industry, we are hard at work to design the most efficient working conditions to ensure both flexibility for our teams as well as strong productivity while delivering the best experiences to players,” Ubisoft said about the delays in a press release.

The Settlers (TBA)

The Settlers – Comeback Trailer | Ubisoft [NA]

Ubisoft’s soft reboot of the classic city builder and real-time strategy game hybrid The Settlers was set to launch on March 17. Ahead of its release, many fans got the chance to try out a closed beta for the game. Unfortunately for Ubisoft, the results weren’t that positive. The game was delayed indefinitely two weeks before its intended launch so the developers could “further improve the game and push quality as our main priority for all our players.”

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp (TBA)

The updated visuals of Advance Wars 1 + 2: Re-Boot Camp.

After getting pushed back from December 2021, Nintendo and WayForward’s Advance Wars remakes for Nintendo Switch were supposed to finally launch on April 8, 2022. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Nintendo decided to indefinitely delay this war-based strategy game. “In light of recent world events, we have made the decision to delay Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp, which was originally scheduled to release on Nintendo Switch on April 8th,” Nintendo tweeted. “Please stay tuned for updates on a new release date.”

Exomecha (TBA)

EXOMECHA – World Premiere Trailer

Exomecha is a free-to-play FPS game featuring mechs that gained notoriety after being featured in a July 2020 Xbox showcase. The game was originally slated for release in August 2021 but got delayed so the developers could continue to refine the experience. Now, Exomecha has been delayed again with no new release window given because the developers at TwistedRed Games want to continue to polish the experience and prepare some post-launch content. We can only hope that this delay won’t be too significant.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake (TBA)

The prince kicks a sand monster.

Ubisoft’s oft-delayed Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake shouldn’t be expected anytime soon. Although the game got a January 2021 release date when it was announced, it was delayed to March 2021 in response to the backlash toward its reveal. The game was then indefinitely pushed back by Ubisoft but was still expected to come out before the end of March 2023. When development shifted over from Ubisoft Pune and Mumbai to Ubisoft Montreal earlier this year, Ubisoft revealed to Digital Trends that we shouldn’t expect the game anytime soon. “We’re proud of the work achieved by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai, and Ubisoft Montreal will benefit from their learnings as the new team will continue the work to deliver a great remake,” a Ubisoft representative told Digital Trends.” As such, we are no longer targeting an FY23 (fiscal year 2023) release anymore. Players will be updated on the project as the development is moving along.”

Toy Soldiers HD for Nintendo Switch (TBA)

Unfortunately we must delay the release of Toy Soldiers HD for Nintendo Switch for a bit longer.

— Accelerate Games (@GamesAccelerate) July 27, 2022

Toy Soldiers HD for Nintendo Switch seems like a simple remaster of an Xbox Live Arcade game from 2010, but the Nintendo Switch version of this remake has been delayed multiple times. Originally delayed from August 2021 to October 2021 alongside the other versions of Toy Soldiers HD, the Nintendo Switch port was the only one not to release last year. It eventually got an August 5 release date, but developer Accelerate Games delayed it indefinitely because “the game’s software is not communicating properly with the consumer version of the console when in multiplayer mode.” Hopefully, it still makes it out this year.

— Daedalic Back from Gamescom (@daedalic) July 25, 2022

Daedalic Entertainment and Nacon were set to release The Lord of the Rings: Gollum on September 1 but delayed it just over a month before launch. No reason was given outside of wanting “to deliver the best possible experience.” According to the tweet confirming the delay, The Lord of Rings: Gollum’s latest delay should be “a few months,” so it remains to be seen if the game makes it out in 2023 or slips into early 2023.

Hill Agency: PURITYdecay (TBA)

Hill speaks to themselves in Hill Agency: PURITYdecay.

Hill Agency: PURITYdecay is an adventure game about Ontario’s Indigenous community that was supposed to come out on August 31, 2022. That said, the developers at Achimostawinan Games made the decision to delay the game a few weeks for launch. No new release date was given, but Achimostawinan Games has pretty solid reasoning for a delay. “In a conscious effort not to compromise the game experience by rushing to a deadline, and with the clear objective of avoiding any form of crunch time, to ensure the team can continue to work in a safe and healthy manner, the decision was made to push the release date,” a press release about the delay says.

We have important news to share with you. pic.twitter.com/O5od8fCp4y

— A Space for the Unbound 💫 gamescom 2022! (@ASFTUgame) August 24, 2022

Toge Productions and Mojiken planned to follow up Coffee Talk with a new title called A Space for the Unbound in 2022. Unfortunately, its release is now in flux due to a dispute with publisher PQube Games. Toge Productions accused PQube games of withholding information and funds from a diversity fund grant it received for A Space for the Unbound in 2020. While PQube denies the allegations, Toge Productions is still fighting for console publishing rights, so A Space For the Unbound had to be delayed indefinitely.

As the year goes on, more delays are bound the happen. We’ll update this post as they are announced.

Unfortunately, none of them were heavy hitters as games like Saints Row, Madden NFL 23, and Soul Hackers 2 were critical disappointments. Despite that, there were still some great games that came out this month if you knew where to look.

From odd indies that mashed up Animal Crossing with a death cult to a groundbreaking full-motion video game, indies shined this month. If you’re wondering what you should play ahead of the rush of notable titles coming this fall and don’t want to check out August’s lackluster AAA games, try giving these six games a shot.

Cult of the Lamb

Cult of the Lamb | Sacrifice Yourself in 2022

Few games feel more Devolver Digital than Cult of the Lamb. On the surface, this might seem like a basic social simulation game, like Animal Crossing, starring cute animals. In reality, it’s also a bloody roguelike about forming and running a cult that worships an evil deity. During the roguelike segments, players try to take down other gods, gathering resources along the way. Then they return to their cult and build it up, constructing new facilities and keeping their followers happy and worshipping.

“Cult of the Lamb explores that balancing act through a darkly comedic premise pulled straight from the golden age of the company Newgrounds,” Giovanni Colantonio’s three-and-a-half star review of the game explains. “It’s a hellishly addictive management game that revels in its religious farce like cultists prancing around a bonfire.”

Cult of the Lamb’s cute-to-horrifying aesthetic screams “memorable indie game,” and it lives up to that idea. Whether you like management games, roguelikes, or just cult stories, this one is worth checking out. Currently, Cult of the Lamb is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch.

Immortality

Immortality trailer (PC Gaming Show 2022)

Look out Elden Ring, there’s another game of the year contender on the scene. Just barely making it into this month’s list on August 30, Immortality is an FMV title about trying to discover the fate of actress Marissa Marcel who starred in three unreleased films. Players look through on-set dallies and behind-the-scenes footage to discover what happened to Marcel, using a clever match-cut mechanic to jump between scenes. Cinematically, Immorality is on a whole other level.

“Immortality is an astonishing work of interactive media, one that fully realizes the potential of [creator Sam] Barlow’s signature full-motion video (FMV) style,” Colantonio wrote in his four-and-a-half star review of Immorality. “It explores our complex, and perhaps unhealthy, fascination with art, all while delivering a level of craft that’s light-years beyond what any other game has even attempted to achieve.”

FMV games often have the stigma of feeling low-budget and amateur, but with Her Story, Telling Lies, and now Immortality, Barlow has consistently pushed this style of game forward. If you enjoy movies or games that push storytelling boundaries, Immorality is a must-play.

Immorality is available for PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X via Xbox Game Pass. It’s coming to iOS and Android via Netflix Games.

Rollerdrome

Roll7 is the master of making games that just feel great to play. It already made our best games of February 2022 list with the spectacular OlliOlli World, but Roll7 had another game up its sleeve this year. The title in question is Rollerdrome, a game that mixes rollerblading and shooting to create an experience that doesn’t feel like much else out there. Couple that with its intriguing dystopian bloodsport premise and colorful art style, and Rollerdrome is a distinct game you won’t forget anytime soon.

“Rollerdrome simultaneously captures that frenetic energy of a shootout in Max Payne and the satisfying vibes of a skill-based skating game like Skate 3 or Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2, and that’s a unique combination that you won’t find anywhere else,” Tomas Franzese wrote in a preview for the game. “With Rollerdrome, Roll7 continues to prove that it makes some of the best-feeling games on the market.”

For those who believe gameplay trumps all else in video games, Rollerdrome provides some of the purest fun you can have this month. Currently, Rollerdrome is available on PC, PS4, and PS5. If you have a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, you can give the game a shot with a 35-minute trial before deciding whether you want to buy the full game.

I Was a Teenage Exocolonist

Fans of narrative games with intriguing political messages will want to check out I Was a Teenage Exocolonist. As the title plainly suggests, the game puts players in the shoes of a kid growing up on an alien planet from ages 10 to 20. Over time, players will be able to shape their character’s personality, traits, and even political views as they learn more about what happened to Earth and what these excolonists are doing on a new planet. Throw in some light exploration and deck-building mechanics, and you have a distinct narrative RPG experience.

“I Was a Teenage Exocolonist doesn’t set out to reinforce the player’s own beliefs with an obvious anti-capitalist critique,” Colantonio wrote about the game. “Instead, it’s focused on exploring how a political landscape shapes a child in their most malleable years. That’s all accomplished through thoughtful RPG and deck-building systems that reflect how kids absorb every little detail around them, even when we think they’re not paying attention.”

If it’s not clear already, clever indie games dominated August, and I Was a Teenage Exocolonist is one that’s worth checking out for fans of RPGs, narrative games, and deck-builders. I Was a Teenage Exocolonist is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch.

Two Point Campus

Two Point Campus | Developer Vision

For fans of business-building and simulation games, few currently are doing it better than Two Point Studios and Sega. A few years ago, the duo impressed with Two Point Hospital, and this month they followed up with a college-themed simulation game called Two Point Campus. As its name suggests, players can build out and customize college campuses, set the curriculum, and hire the staff to run them.

Although that might sound a bit dry, it thankfully isn’t because of its unmistakable British humor. The radio station playing in the background on campuses is constantly spewing hilarious jokes. These colleges also don’t host your typical boring algebra and business 101 college classes. Instead, students will partake in courses like Knight School and Spy School, giving Two Point Campus some funny visual flair.

Whether you’re here for the quirky British humor or the impressively detailed but easy-to-learn building and simulation mechanics, Two Point Campus is worth your time. A game like Two Point Campus is best played on PC, but the game is also available for Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. It’s even on Xbox Game Pass, so give it a shot via that subscription service if you’re curious.

Jetpack Joyride 2

Jetpack Joyride 2 | Official Apple Arcade Trailer

While its been a light year for Apple Arcade when it comes to subscriptio- selling hits, Jetpack Joyride 2 is one of the best games to hit Apple’s service since its launch. The exclusive is a sequel to a beloved mobile infinite runner where players dodge around obstacles while zipping forward with a jetpack. Jetpack Joyride 2 retains some of the same fundamentals, but within a much different framework.

Rather than letting players set high scores in infinite runs, the sequel is level-based. Players need to make it to the end of different 2D levels as they weave around obstacles and shoot robots in their path. It’s a bit more of a classic shoot-’em-up than the previous game. On top of that, the sequel has several progression hooks, letting players upgrade weapons, mine for resources, and complete challenges. It’s a more digestible version of the game that does away with microtransactions and replaces them with a smart in-game economy.

Jetpack Joyride 2 is one of this year’s best mobile games, so if you have Apple Arcade, give it a download. While you can get through the initial content in a few hours, a new update is planned for September. — Giovanni Colantonio

SNL Cold Open: Minnesota News Crew Debates Derek Chauvin Trial (Video) https://briefnews.eu/snl-cold-open-minnesota-news-crew-debates-derek-chauvin-trial-video/ https://briefnews.eu/snl-cold-open-minnesota-news-crew-debates-derek-chauvin-trial-video/#respond Sun, 11 Apr 2021 05:16:45 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/snl-cold-open-minnesota-news-crew-debates-derek-chauvin-trial-video/

Saturday Night Live weighed in on the Derek Chauvin trial this weekend by way of a fictitious morning news program out of Minnesota.

In the cold open, a four-person anchor team — Ego Nwodim, Kenan Thompson, Kate McKinnon and Alex Moffat — discussed what had transpired so far in the trial of the former Minneapolis cop charged in the death of George Floyd. While they were all in agreement that “the video footage alone should tell you everything you need to know about what happened,” the white anchors had far more confidence in the American justice system than their Black counterparts.

“The defense trying to make a case that George Floyd’s drug use was somehow responsible is just deplorable,” Nwodim said. Added Thompson, “It was a clear act of desperation to create doubt where there is none.”

“Exactly,” McKinnon responded. “And there’s no way the jury’s going to fall for that.” But Nwodim and Thompson’s characters weren’t convinced.

“Let’s just say we’ve seen this movie before,” Nwodim explained.

The anchors eventually took a step back from their tense discussion to reflect on the “obvious stuff,” including a “glaring discrepancy” in the way Black people are treated by police and the need for “concrete solutions.” When Nwodim’s character suggested reparations as a potential fix, Moffat’s alter ego cut her off in disagreement.

The news personalities eventually moved on to other headlines, including the death of Prince Philip. When McKinnon’s character mentioned that the world lost “royalty” Friday, Nwodim and Thompson chimed in to acknowledge the passing of “Party Up” rapper DMX.

“I was talking about the prince,” McKinnon said.

“Girl, Prince been dead,” Nwodim responded.

SNL Video: Lil Nas X Gives God a Lap Dance at Britney Spears’ Request https://briefnews.eu/snl-video-lil-nas-x-gives-god-a-lap-dance-at-britney-spears-request/ https://briefnews.eu/snl-video-lil-nas-x-gives-god-a-lap-dance-at-britney-spears-request/#respond Sun, 04 Apr 2021 07:50:29 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/snl-video-lil-nas-x-gives-god-a-lap-dance-at-britney-spears-request/

Rapper Lil Nas X made his Saturday Night Live “debut” this week (by way of Chris Redd) in a cold open that also featured Britney Spears, cancelled Looney Tunes character Pepé Le Pew and disgraced Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz. Because why not.

It was all part of Oops, You Did It Again, a recurring sketch in which Spears (played to perfection by Chloe Fineman) shines a light on the week’s biggest pariahs. She also called out Selling Sunset‘s Chrishell Stause — though not by name — for claiming that Spears doesn’t write her own social media posts, before thanking this week’s sponsor: Georgia, “voted best place… not to vote.”

Lil Nas X (played by Redd) was the first guest in the hot seat, as Spears grilled him about giving the Devil a lap dance in his new music video, as well as releasing a controversial line of Satan shoes. “I don’t know why Nike is so mad,” the rapper said. “Their slogan is ‘Just do it.’ Well, I did it!”

Spears, naturally, determined that the only way to even things out was for the rapper to give God a lap dance — which he did, though he reminded the audience that it was actually his friend Gary (played by Mikey Day) dressed up like God. You know, just in case you were confused. (Meanwhile, the real Lil Nas X tweeted, “snl going to hell.”)

The second guest was Kate McKinnon as Pépe Le Pew, who proved that he’s a changed skunk by greeting Spears with a handshake, rather than the usual unwanted kiss. After insisting that he has no hard feelings about being taken out of the new Space Jam movie, the cancelled Looney Tune insisted, “I’m an actor. The part you see me play on TV and in the movies, that is not me.” Fair enough.

Then came the true guest of dishonor: Davidson as Gaetz (with a strong dash of Quagmire from Family Guy). The hostess ran through all of the recent sexual misconduct allegations brought against Gaetz — including that he allegedly dated a 17-year-old girl who he took across state lines, and that he allegedly showed his Republican co-workers inappropriate pictures of the women that he slept with — before telling him, “I think I can smell a predator when I see one. After all, I was on The Mickey Mouse Club.”

Saturday’s episode welcomed actor Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out, Judas and the Black Messiah) as a first-time host, while St. Vincent returned to Studio 8H as a musical guest for the second time; she first appeared on SNL for the Andy Samberg-hosted Season 39 finale in 2014. Pepe sprays him.

Next week’s Saturday Night Live will be hosted by actress Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman), with Kid Cudi serving as the show’s musical guest. That episode will mark both Mulligan and Cudi’s SNL debut.
