Liu Wen is a woman of many firsts. She’s the first East Asian model to work for Victoria’s Secret, first Chinese woman to grace American Vogue’s cover, and first Asian to ever make Forbes’ list of highest-paid supermodels

While Liu success can be attributed to the fashion industry’s growing focus on Chinese consumers, she also works insanely hard for it.

She was born in Yongzhou, a city in southern China. At 5-foot-10, she towered over her classmates while growing up. “I developed a habit of bending down when speaking to others, as if my back was permanently hunched,” she said in 2014.

She never planned on being a model — her first foray into the industry was when she won a modelling contest in 2008, aged around 17, to win a new computer. “I didn’t have a clear goal [at the time] — I just wanted something that would allow me to travel around the world,” she told Business Insider.

  • Victoria’s Secret customers are complaining on Facebook that its ads, which feature scantily dressed models, are targeted more towards men than women.

Victoria’s Secret has an advertising problem, and it’s putting off customers. 

In January, Business Insider reported that mothers of teenage children who shopped at its teen-centric brand, PINK, were revolting online because of the oversexualized ads in Victoria’s Secret’s stores. 

“It is basically pornography that everyone (children and teens) are subjected to viewing because there is only one area to check out between PINK and Victoria’s Secret, which happens to have the most obscene photos behind the registers,” shopper Jessie Shealy wrote on Victoria’s Secret’s Facebook page.

PINK has become one of the most successful parts of Victoria’s Secret, reporting stronger sales than other parts of the store in recent years.

But it’s not only PINK customers who are being put off by these racy photos. Some Victoria’s Secret customers are also complaining that its ads are targeted more at men than women.

Meanwhile, rivals such as American Eagle’s underwear brand, Aerie, are doubling down on their efforts to appeal to their female shoppers, ditching photoshopped images and partnering with women activists to promote female empowerment. 

We visited Aerie and Victoria’s Secret to see just how extreme the differences are:

We visited two stores in Manhattan’s Soho area. The stores were on the same block and therefore in direction competition with each other.

The brand famously doesn’t Photoshop any of the images in its ads. In 2014, it swapped its airbrushed ads for unretouched photos and launched a body-positive campaign known as #AerieReal.

Victoria’s Secret has a huge problem with diversity, but its CEO won’t acknowledge it.

This month, billionaire businessman Les Wexner publically slammed Trump online after his controversial comments on immigration. 

During a meeting with a bipartisan group of lawmakers, who were seeking to resolve The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program that protects young unauthorized immigrants from deportation and is being phased out by the Trump administration, the President said: “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” 

“This is not acceptable,” Wexner said in response. 

This is the second time that Wexner has spoken out against the President. In August, he criticised Trump’s comments after a woman was killed by a white supremacist during a racially-charged rally in Charlottesville.

His thoughts this month echoed this: “Hearing the remarks of yesterday, I repeat that this is not acceptable.”

While Wexner has been applauded for standing up for equality and diversity against Trump, he has failed to demonstrate this in own business.

Victoria’s Secret has frequently been criticized for the lack of diversity in its ad campaigns and runway shows, which feature rail-thin models. In November 2017, around the time of its annual show, plus-size model Ashley Graham posted a doctored Instagram of herself with a sarcastic comment which said: “Got my wings!” Despite this outcry online, the brand has failed to cater to plus-size customers. 

And to its detriment, the store was once the kingpin of the US lingerie market but in recent years has lost market share to more body positive brands. 

In the past year, Victoria’s Secret has seen negative same-store sales growth. Meanwhile, Aerie, which promotes natural beauty and self-acceptance in its ad campaigns, has seen 11 consecutive quarters of same-store sales growth.

According to a report done by lingerie brand Bluebella, she earns $ 70,000 for each post, The Sun reported.

Swanepoel shot to fame after being becoming a Victoria’s Secret Angel in 2010. Today, she has 11.8 million followers on Instagram and is one of the highest paid Angels, earning $ 7 million in 2016.

Two Victoria’s Secret Angels did just that during a recent trip – but rather than soaking up the sun on an exotic beach, the duo were in freezing cold Antartica.

Jasmine Tookes, 26, and Josephine Skriver, 24, shared images of themselves enjoying everything the snowy location has to offer.

But as well as the usual boat trips among the icebergs and trips to see penguins, the duo did something more out of the ordinary.

The models are very used to posing in their swimsuits, and even the cold weather couldn’t put them off.

They took the opportunity to strip down to their swimming costumes and frolic in the snow.

Sharing a video to Insta stories, Jasmine wrote: “Call us crazy ;)”

Jasmine wore a crisp white plunge neck costume, while Josephine slipped into a baby pink costume with cutout sides.

A giant ship in the background perhaps gave a clue as to how they had got out to the remote location.

In another post, Jasmine said the trip was “the best way to start the new year.”

She continued: “This is going to be such an exciting and incredible experience.

“Anyone who knows me well knows this is a trip definitely out of my comfort zone. Proud of myself for taking the leap and trying something adventurous.”

The models were last seen walking in the Victoria’s Secret fashion show in Shanghai in November.

The catwalk was a riot of colour, with Candice Swanepoel in a bright red and orange outfit.

Victoria’s Secret also opted for a grecian theme, with Bella and Candice both seen in gold head pieces and flowing fabrics reminiscent of Ancient Greece.

A fun and flirty atmosphere was the order of the day for the show, with Bella Hadid dancing at the front of the catwalk as she laughed along to the music.

All of the models did a long walk at the end, clapping their hands and waving to the crowd.

Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show aired on CBS last night, and model Bella Hadid, 21, was one of the most popular women to walk the catwalk.

This year, Bella was caught on camera holding hands and smiling at performer Miguel, 32 – a far cry from her catwalk appearance last year, when she awkwardly avoided ex-boyfriend The Weeknd, 27, on stage.

Bella beamed as she walked past Miguel, holding his hand and throwing out a peace sign to the crowd.

Miguel looked on appreciatively as Bella strode past him in skimpy black lace lingerie and blue wings.

During the show in Paris last year, Bella was forced to walk past her ex-boyfriend The Weeknd, who was one of the star performers.

The couple had only recently broken up, and knew the world would be watching their interaction.

Bella did manage a brief smile in the direction of her ex, but the pair did not hold hands as she did with Miguel this year.

However, at the time Bella claimed things were fine between herself and The Weeknd, and there was no awkwardness.

Speaking to E! ahead of her Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show debut, she said: “This is his second year performing, and I think he’s going to kill it. There is no awkwardness. He is my best friend, and I am excited because I am walking during his performance.”

Bella also hit headlines this year after she suffered an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction on the catwalk.

While dancing on stage with a fellow model, Bella accidentally exposed her nipples.

The young star, who was wearing a gold leaf tiara on her head, didn’t seem to notice as she smiled and giggled on stage.

Hers was not the only mishap on the night, with model Ming Xi, 28, falling over on the catwalk.

Wearing a silver and blue outfit with elaborate floral headpiece, Ming slipped and fell flat on her face.

Ming was wearing thigh high stiletto boots which may have got caught in her long flowing cape.

After spending a few seconds on the ground, she was kindly helped up by her colleague Bruna Lirio, 23.

Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2017 saw Bella Hadid take to the runway for the second time, wearing her angel wings.

And the 21-year-old model seemed to enjoy herself, although some enthusiastic dancing resulted in a wardrobe mishap.

Hadid, a Los Angeles native, has won the accolade of ‘model of the year’ numerous times. 

In 2015 she was ‘model of the year’ at the Second Annual Fashion Los Angeles Awards and the GQ Men of the Year Awards.

In 2016 she won ‘Model of the Year: Women (Industry’s Choice)’ at the Models.com Industry Awards.

That’s quite  a trophy cabinet for someone so young. 

Bella followed her sister Gigi into modelling, after she achieved minor fame on the show Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.

Their mother Yolanda Hadid was also a model.

But it’s not been smooth-sailing for the Hadid family ahead of this year’s much-hyped Victoria’s Secret show. 

Bella’s sister Gigi was forced to pull out of this year’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

Taking to Twitter, Gigi Hadid, 22, revealed her sadness at missing the Victoria’s Secret Fashion show as it made its debut in Shanghai. 

There had been speculation over the model’s appearance after a controversial video of the model squinting her eyes and appearing to mock Asian people surfaced earlier this year.

The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is an annual show which has been running since 1995.

It has been held in countries all around the world including Miami, Los Angeles, Cannes, Paris, and London. 

With the brand now targeting the Asian market, the latest show has been held in Shanghai, China.

Initially the show was created as a way to advertise lingerie to men before Valentine’s Day, and the early shows were held in the days preceding the holiday.

However, the shows have morphed into something entirely different now – an extravaganza which also well as showcasing the brand’s lingerie has performances from world class musical acts.
