Viacom has come a long, long way from the days when online video was seemingly its mortal enemy. The media giant has formally launched Digital Studios, a wing dedicated to (you guessed it) original internet shows. The initial programs in the works are all attached to familiar names like BET, Comedy Central, MTV and Nickelodeon, and will be available across services like Facebook Watch, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube — it won’t just involve the previously unveiled Snapchat plans.

It’s easy to find a few highlights. There’s a BET sketch comedy show on YouTube from Majah Hype (The Majah Hype Show), a Facebook Watch celebrity news riff from Nikki Glaser (You Up? With Nikki Glaser), an extension of Broad City on multiple services (Hack into Broad City), a YouTube companion show for MTV’s Cribs (Cooking in the Crib with Snooki) and a Nickelodeon YouTube series covering a Minecraft tournament (Super League Gaming Minecraft City Champs). All told, Viacom is clearly aiming at a young audience.

You can also expect Twitter-specific news bites from BET, Comedy Central and TV.

Viacom hasn’t outlined release schedules as we write this, and most of these shows aren’t likely to make you ditch conventional TV. Not that the company necessarily minds. This is more about catering to a “mobile-first” audience that rarely if ever sits down to watch on a big screen. Viacom knows it can’t ignore this audience if it wants to stay relevant, and that means offering more than just a handful of material.

But those days are long past. The company first used major deals with the likes of Sony and Disney to improve its offerings. More recently, it’s been ramping up the production of original shows, such as “Stranger Things” and “Black Mirror.”

As the company has focused on improving its streaming offerings, it’s been spending increasing amounts on acquiring and producing content. In fact, Netflix’s content spending has gotten so huge, it’s now in the same ballpark as that of some of the top entertainment companies, as this chart by Statista, which was compiled from a recent Recode report, shows.

The list of top spenders on programming could see some major upheaval in coming years. Not only does Netflix plan to keep increasing its budget, but Amazon, Hulu, Apple, and others are all looking to beef up their video efforts.

In efforts to compete with streaming TV services, some networks are looking to make their own “skinny” TV bundles. At the J.P. Morgan Global Technology, Media, and Telecom conference in Boston this week, Viacom CEO Bob Bakish explained that the company is in talks with at least one multichannel video programming distributor (MVPD) to be part of an entertainment-only, slimmed-down TV bundle that would cost between $ 10 and $ 20 per month.

This type of package would include entertainment channels only and exclude sports entirely, gearing it toward customers who want a cheaper TV bundle and don’t care about sports programming. Bakish criticized current TV streaming offerings for not being “transformational” since they still require customers to pay for content they don’t want, namely sports networks. According to Bakish, the true transformational plan will be one that provides customers with “a new entry segment at a much lower price point” with optional sports programming.

Live sports is a huge deal for most over-the-top streaming services, as it is for social media outlets that have been focusing more on live video. Services like YouTube TV and Hulu with Live TV highlight the number of sports networks included in their $ 35 to $ 40 price tags, while Twitter and Facebook have obtained rights to stream various sports broadcasts over social media in the past couple years.

Musical.ly might have professionally made original shows to offer along with user-produced content sometime in the future. According to Bloomberg, the music video app is currently talking to Viacom and Comcast’s NBCUniversal about creating original programming for its users. Musical.ly is reportedly interested in interactive shows that encourage the community to participate instead of heavily produced ones. The publication’s sources didn’t get more specific than that, only noting that the Chinese company’s purpose is to widen its appeal by offering videos that focus on, say, comedy or sports.

While Musical.ly hasn’t confirmed Bloomberg’s report yet, it’s not that hard to believe that it’s cooking up originals for its users. It’s already working with Seventeen to create a fashion and beauty series for the platform and with the 2017 Billboard Latin Music Awards in an effort to develop more Hispanic-focused concepts.

It’s also not unusual for social media platforms to develop original programming at this point in time. Twitter is working towards broadcasting live original content all day, every day. Facebook even brought in a former MTV executive to lead its efforts to create both scripted and unscripted originals, mainly for teenage audiences.

Before Musical.ly launches original shows, though, it will introduce Snapchat-like filters in the coming days. The feature will apparently be called Face.ly and will superimpose virtual masks on your face so you can create an animated avatar. It will eventually become a standalone app, but until then, it will live inside the company’s main application.
