British Airways shuts down its ‘not commercially viable’ London-Tehran service https://briefnews.eu/british-airways-shuts-down-its-not-commercially-viable-london-tehran-service/ https://briefnews.eu/british-airways-shuts-down-its-not-commercially-viable-london-tehran-service/#respond Fri, 24 Aug 2018 03:48:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/british-airways-shuts-down-its-not-commercially-viable-london-tehran-service/ British Airways is to suspend its direct flights between London and Tehran, as the route is no longer “commercially viable.” The news comes as US sanctions on Iran hit foreign firms operating there.

BA announced on Thursday that its last outbound flight from London to Tehran will be on September 22 and its last inbound flight on September 23. “We are suspending our London to Tehran service as the operation is currently not commercially viable,” a spokesman told RT.

Air France announced in June that it would end its Paris to Tehran route as of September 17 while Dutch airline KLM, a partner of Air France, said last month that it would also suspend direct flights from Amsterdam to Tehran as of September 24. Both airlines cited commercial reasons for the suspensions.

US national security adviser John Bolton © Ronen Zvulun

British Airways had only reinstated its London-Tehran route in 2016, after sanctions on Iran were relaxed following the 2015 signing of the JCPOA. Signed by Iran, the US, EU, and five other countries, The JCPOA, or Iran deal, guaranteed Iran some sanctions relief in exchange for a halt on its nuclear weapons program.

Business in Iran has been hammered by the reintroduction of American sanctions on the Islamic Republic, after the US unilaterally withdrew from the JCPOA in May.

Since then, sanctions have played a key role in the US pressure campaign against the Iranian government. Despite the best efforts of the EU, whose member countries remain party to the JCPOA, European businesses have already begun to pull out of Iran, fearful of US penalties for doing business there.

“Let me be clear, the reimposition of the sanctions, we think, is already having a significant effect on Iran’s economy and on, really, popular opinion inside Iran,” national security advisor and Iran hardliner John Bolton told reporters on Tuesday. Bolton promised a fresh round of sanctions in November, as well as a host of “other things,” but denied that the US was engaged in abetting regime change.

“Just to be clear, regime change in Iran is not American policy. But what we want is massive change in the regime’s behavior,” he said.

When Apple released macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 on March 29, fully supported external graphics-card functionality was one of the flagship features.

Most Macs ship with discrete or integrated GPUs—power-saving cousins to the graphics cards found in desktop PCs—that emphasize efficient power and heat management as much as they do performance. External graphics cards (eGPUs) allow users to connect those powerful desktop graphics cards to their computers via the Thunderbolt 3 ports on modern Macs.

That could solve many of the frustrations some users have with the Mac platform, like the lack of an upgrade path for professional-use machines that depend on graphics power and lackluster gaming performance in the latest games.

Is Cryptocurrency a Viable Fundraising Option For Hollywood? https://briefnews.eu/is-cryptocurrency-a-viable-fundraising-option-for-hollywood/ https://briefnews.eu/is-cryptocurrency-a-viable-fundraising-option-for-hollywood/#respond Fri, 23 Mar 2018 07:27:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/is-cryptocurrency-a-viable-fundraising-option-for-hollywood/ Cryptocurrency

Could the next studio blockbuster be funded through Bitcoin? The concept of cryptocurrency has been around for years already, but it looks like Hollywood is starting to take notice.

The producers of a planned Atari movie about the founding of the influential video game company are looking to raise as much as $ 40 million through a new cryptocurrency to secure enough funds to complete the film. Could this be a viable way for companies to make movies?

The concepts of cryptocurrency and blockchain can be difficult to explain, but this segment from Last Week Tonight with John Oliver segment does a good job of presenting the basics:

The Atari Movie

Variety (via The Verge) reports that a production and financing company called Vision Tree is looking to raise $ 40 million through the private sale of “Bushnell tokens,” new digital coins named after Nolan Bushnell*, the founder of Atari. Companies you’ve never heard of attempt to capitalize on big trends all the time, but what drew my attention here was that Leonardo DiCaprio‘s Appian Way production company is co-producing this movie. They’ve produced some major films over the past few years (The Wolf of Wall Street, The Revenant, Shutter Island, etc.), so if they think there’s something to this, maybe there is?

Producer J.D. Seraphine told Variety:

“While the film has received offers from conventional and studio-sourced financing, we have elected cryptocurrency funding to accelerate the filmmaking path in a whole new way, offering Atari fans the opportunity to share in the creation of this movie with us. We wanted to enable Atari fans and gamers to co-own the project and the experience.”

Sounds like they’re using the same approach as crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo, which offer rewards for contributing to a campaign. The benefits for backers of this Atari movie involve co-ownership of the eventual film itself, as well as the ability to “vote on the trailer” and “help select cast members.”

Variety also pointed out that a new indie romance called No Postage Necessary will become the first movie to be released using blockchain technology when it comes out later this year. People interested in watching the film can check it out in limited theaters or buy it with cryptocurrency through Vevue, a blockchain-based video app. The filmmakers are offering Vevue tokens to theatergoers who post a review of the movie as soon as the film ends as extra incentive in the hopes of building word of mouth about the movie. Here’s the trailer:

Implications For The Future

So is cryptocurrency a viable option for Hollywood financiers? It’s still too early to say for sure, but I’m not fully convinced this is going to be the way of the future for this industry. Hollywood is notoriously risk-averse, and the very nature of cryptocurrencies involves paying traditional money for a portion of currency with no physical form or intrinsic value. It’s an inherently risky proposition, and it doesn’t help that Bitcoin – the most recognizable cryptocurrency – lost a third of its value by the end of January earlier this year because the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) is paying increasingly more attention to these deregulated markets.

The notion of a major studio relying on cryptocurrencies to fund a huge blockbuster seems unlikely to me, but as these aforementioned examples are proving, there seems to be room for smaller production companies to experiment with this technology while it’s still considered the Wild West of the tech world. So while Avengers 5 probably won’t be funded using Bitcoin (or “Stan Lee tokens,” or whatever the hell), it’s very possible that we’ll see more examples of smaller cryptocurrency-funded projects popping up in the future. Until the bubble bursts, that is.

*Bushnell is currently under fire for inappropriate behavior in the workplace during the early days of the company, and in the wake of those allegations, a prominent gaming conference recently rescinded their decision to honor him with an award. That’s not the focus of this article, but I figured it was worth mentioning.

Agilesphere Launches a Review of the Future of Organisation – the Minimal Viable Organisation – at the Agile Business Conference https://briefnews.eu/agilesphere-launches-a-review-of-the-future-of-organisation-the-minimal-viable-organisation-at-the-agile-business-conference/ https://briefnews.eu/agilesphere-launches-a-review-of-the-future-of-organisation-the-minimal-viable-organisation-at-the-agile-business-conference/#respond Wed, 04 Oct 2017 09:34:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/agilesphere-launches-a-review-of-the-future-of-organisation-the-minimal-viable-organisation-at-the-agile-business-conference/

LONDON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–October 4, 2017–

Agilesphere has today (4 October 2017) made a call to action for industry to work together to rethink how organisations are structured, ensuring they are ready to tackle the challenges and opportunities society will face. Outlining initial ideas on how organisations can become more strategic, efficient and customer focused, Founder Jeremy Renwick highlighted Agilesphere’s new conceptual framework: Minimal Viable Organisation. This vision is designed to embed feedback, empowerment, recursion and value within organisations and is inspired by Stafford Beer’s Viable Systems Model. Speaking at the Agile Business Conference, a major forum for those interested in Agile ways of working, Renwick and the Agilesphere team immediately convened a roundtable working group to consider how to further develop the Minimal Viable Organisation vision. Now Agilesphere, a partnership of talented experts dedicated to finding innovative solutions to the challenges we face as a society, is calling for more people from industry and Government, along with academics and thinkers from around the world to get involved in developing the Minimal Viable Organisation concept.

Jeremy Renwick, Founder of Agilesphere, said: “Today we’re launching our initial thinking on how organisations of the future could work. In these rapidly changing times, we believe that our Minimal Viable Organisation vision will help organisations adapt and respond to new challenges and opportunities. Building on the work of Stafford Beer, the founders of the Agile Manifesto and many others, this is the start of a new journey to rethink how to organise organisation. We want to involve as many international thinkers and practitioners with an interest in this area as possible, as we further develop the Minimal Viable Organisation vision.”

The Agile Business Conference is a major, two-day annual event which provides a single forum for everyone interested in the application of Agile, or moving towards an Agile way of working. The unique gathering of influential Agile practitioners and leaders also brings together senior professionals predominantly from the UK and Europe, including C-suite executives, directors and managers.

During the roundtable working group held at the conference Agilesphere’s Jeremy Renwick and Hugh Ivory shared their perspectives on how a Minimum Viable Organisation could be constituted based on their real-world experiences of business transformation in the public and private sectors. The discussion explored what new structures constitute the Minimum Viable Organisation and how leaders can harness these to enable and empower people.

Agilesphere is a 100-strong community of talented experts who use agile consultancy and technology to transform services, organisations and society for the better. The organisation has supported a wide range of Governmental and private sector organisations in delivering transformational change at scale. N. Korea ‘years and years away’ from viable nuclear device – Russian Deputy FM https://briefnews.eu/n-korea-years-and-years-away-from-viable-nuclear-device-russian-deputy-fm/ https://briefnews.eu/n-korea-years-and-years-away-from-viable-nuclear-device-russian-deputy-fm/#respond Sun, 30 Jul 2017 22:48:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/n-korea-years-and-years-away-from-viable-nuclear-device-russian-deputy-fm/ Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov has said the threat posed by North Korea should not be exaggerated and that a rational solution should be found by Russia and the United States.

“I think we are years and years away from a moment they can weaponize,” Ryabkov told ABC’s ‘This Week.’

“What they are testing are quite primitive devices which require months for preparation, and which are essentially pieces of equipment with all sorts of wires and additional elements around, which simply cannot be put on top of any missile.”

Ryabkov said that while Moscow was just as keen as Washington to achieve a nuclear free Korean peninsula, any measures taken by the international community must be proportionate and must not demonize North Korea.

“We are in the process of discussing a draft resolution for the UN Security Council that would take further measures, and we are prepared to do so, but this resolution should not equate measures that are targeted on stopping the illegal activities of Pyongyang in the area of nuclear weaponization and missile developments to the economic suffocation of the whole country,” Ryabkov said.

“Here we have a red line which we should observe. We’re hoping we will find a way forward collectively, co-operatively in New York at the Security Council and we will continue our bilateral exchanges with Washington on this issue because it’s very serious and it’s dangerous… and we are concerned [because] North Korea is very close to Russian borders.”

Ryabkov also touched on the ongoing Russia-related scandals facing the Trump administration; starting with the case of former Russian ambassador to the US Sergey Kislyak, who, during the 2016 presidential campaign, met with soon-to-be Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

“If ambassador Kislyak was not contacting some people on the other side, so to say, he wouldn’t have been performing his functions as he should, and in fact the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations require diplomatic missions in every country maintain widespread contacts to learn more on the circumstances of the host country. That is exactly what Kislyak was doing.”

“Washington DC is a city where everyone meets and everyone talks, and the very fact that someone saw some Russians somewhere is now close to a criminal act, I think.”

“I think it’s ridiculous. It’s degrading for such a great country as the United States.”

Ryabkov added that any information the Kremlin may have had about the Hillary Clinton campaign could be obtained by anyone using open, publicly-available sources.

“We are not doing anything to the detriment of the domestic developments or internal affairs of any country, the US included. It’s very, very far from the very principles of Russian foreign policy, which is to watch for the preservation of international law, to be equal and respectful to others.”

2017 Niro in Depth: Kia’s Hybrid Is a Viable Prius Alternative https://briefnews.eu/2017-niro-in-depth-kias-hybrid-is-a-viable-prius-alternative/ https://briefnews.eu/2017-niro-in-depth-kias-hybrid-is-a-viable-prius-alternative/#respond Wed, 29 Mar 2017 20:15:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/2017-niro-in-depth-kias-hybrid-is-a-viable-prius-alternative/ 2017-Kia-Niro-01-Placement

Designed from the tires up to be a hybrid, the Niro’s best feature may be that it doesn’t look like one. It pulls double duty as a small SUV and a Prius hunter, so you can save money on gas without anyone suspecting you of tightwad tendencies. With above-average interior space, city fuel economy of up to 52 mpg, and plug-in and pure-electric models in the pipeline, the Niro is a package that deserves consideration. Heavily de-contented in its base iteration and underpowered across the lineup, the Niro is not without flaws. But with crossover looks, an accessible price tag, and stellar fuel economy, it’s an exceedingly practical choice. Because of its dual citizenship in hybrid and crossover nations, we compare it to both types of vehicles in this review. READ MORE ››

Researchers create first viable hybrid human-pig embryo https://briefnews.eu/researchers-create-first-viable-hybrid-human-pig-embryo/ https://briefnews.eu/researchers-create-first-viable-hybrid-human-pig-embryo/#respond Thu, 26 Jan 2017 19:14:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/researchers-create-first-viable-hybrid-human-pig-embryo/

Researchers have created a viable hybrid part-human, part-pig embryo for the first time in history. According to a study published in the journal Cell Thursday, researchers were able to successfully inject human stem cells into a pig embryo and grow tissue that would form the early stages of human organs like the heart, liver and neurons. Although it’s in the very early stages, experts believe the human-pig chimera could one day be used to grow transplantable human organs in farm animals.

Adding to the promising scientific breakthroughs, a separate study published in the journal Nature earlier this week details how an international team of researchers successfully performed an interspecies organ transplant using a similar method to create a hybrid mouse-rat embryo. In that study, researchers grew a mouse pancreas inside a rat embryo, which was then transplanted into diabetic mice. As the Washington Post reports, the new pancreatic tissue cured the mice’s diabetes without being rejected by the host. The mice only required a few days of recovery and immunosuppressive treatments before they were able to resume normal, healthy lives.

While the technology is moving forward, the ethics of harvesting human organs from animals — or even creating human-animal chimeras in general — is still a touchy subject. Aside from the symbolic and philosophical questions that come from mixing human and animal genetics, there is a fear that stem cells could one day be used to create an animal with a human brain. For now, however, the authors of the Cell study point out that the system is “highly inefficient,” but the two papers together show the possible benefits of this sort of controversial research.
