A Frenchman who was captured pummeling a riot police officer during Yellow Vest protests in Paris has been revealed to be a former professional boxer. Former light heavyweight champion of France, Christophe Dettinger, was filmed repeatedly punching the officer, who was wielding a baton and a shield, as the protest turned violent on on a bridge in central Paris on Saturday. Video footage of the incident went viral over the weekend, leading to the boxer’s identification by police. A puño limpio hicieron retroceder a la policía en Francia: — Vagabundo ilustrado (@vagoilustrado) January 6, 2019 Police were forced to retreat as Dettinger vaulted onto the bridge and repeatedly punched the officer despite the cop being fully clad in protective riot armor. Separate footage of a different scuffle shows the same man repeatedly kicking and punching another officer while he lay on the ground. The French police union revealed on Twitter that, thanks to footage posted on social media, the attacker had been identified. “Sir, you who punched a colleague on the ground, you have been identified. For a boxer, you do not respect a lot of rules. We will teach you those of the penal code,” the tweet read. French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner described the attack as “cowardly and intolerable,” announcing via Twitter that he had contacted the public prosecutor to open an investigation into the incident. However, supporters of the Yellow Vest movement have labeled Dettinger a hero who was simply ‘beating’ officers at their own game. Like this story? Share it with a friend!
Just 25 percent of the people surveyed by Odoxa and Dentsu Consulting for France Info and Le Figaro said they were happy with the way the government is running the protest-plagued country, while 75 percent disapprove of Macron and the ministers in his cabinet.
This indicates a dramatic loss of popularity for Macron compared to the 59 percent of unhappy citizens in April 2018, according to France Info. The current poll included 1,004 people across the country and was carried out in early January.
Interestingly, the least favorable opinions came not only from low-paid workers and farmers, but also the upper-middle income class.
People are equally dissatisfied with a number of key government officials, including Prime Minister Edouard Philippe and Interior Minister Christophe Castaner, with 54 and 53 percent negative ratings respectively.
Yellow Vest protesters – so called due to the distinctive high-visibility jackets they wear – launched massive rallies across the country in November of last year. At first, the rallies targeted a hike in fuel prices proposed by Macron’s government, which was later dropped in the wake of almost war-like battles between angry protesters and police.
Efforts to pacify the people failed as the Yellow Vest movement quickly snowballed into a wider protest against deteriorating living conditions and social inequality in France.
One of the protest leaders, Eric Drouet, was arrested in Paris late on Wednesday, sparking outcry among his supporters who chanted ‘Dictatorship! Dictatorship!’
The authorities earlier charged him with organizing and leading an unauthorized protest, sparking outrage among the Yellow Vests in the capital. Tweeting support for Drouet, left-wing politician Jean-Luc Melenchon called the arrest an “abuse of power” and political policing.

Citing personal reasons for the resignation, Sylvain Fort said on Thursday that he would leave the job at the end of January, telling France Info radio station that he had informed the president of the decision several weeks ago.
“After two years and a half of relentless work serving the candidate and later our president, I wish to pursue other professional and personal projects, and above all dedicate more time to my family,” he told AFP in a statement.
His resignation follows that of former Interior Minister Gerard Collomb, who left his post in October, following a dip in relations with the president.
Europe 1 radio have also reported that Macron’s strategy chief, Ismael Emelien, is also seeking to resign. However, this has yet to be confirmed by the presidential palace.
During his stint as spin doctor, Fort played an integral role in shaping Macon’s political messaging during a grueling presidential election campaign that saw the political novice pip right-wing candidate Marine Le Pen to the Elysee Palace.
Following the election, Fort took a step back from the political limelight, instead settling into the role of Macron’s chief speech writer. However, he returned to a front-line role in the summer following the Benalla Affair – a scandal and attempted cover-up involving Macron’s former bodyguard beating May Day protesters.
Since then, other incidents that have soured public opinion of the president include him posing with middle-finger waving gangsters in Saint Martin, and reports of a lavish lifestyle have led to accusations that he is out of touch and that he had ambitions of being a ‘Jupiterian’ leader.
However, the biggest challenge facing Macron, who entered 2019 with a record-low approval rating, is that of the Yellow Vest movement. Initially angered at proposed fuel price hikes, the movement has now widened its focus to include tackling Macron’s pro-business agenda, which they say favors the rich.
But a defiant Macron used his New Year’s message to reaffirm his commitment to his reform agenda, saying: “We can’t work less, earn more, cut taxes and increase spending.”

TV channel France3 has “fixed” a placard held by a Yellow Vest protester, which urged President Emmanuel Macron to resign. The broadcaster explained that the sign was broadcast reading just Macron, due to a “human error.”
The unfortunate blunder occurred on Saturday during an evening news program that was covering the ongoing Yellow Vest protests.
Among videos and images of the protests, France3 featured a photo supplied by Agence France Presse (AFP). It shows a couple of mounted police officers watching the crowds outside the Opera building in Paris on Saturday. One of the Yellow Vests holds high a placard, reading “Macron out.” Here’s this photo.
Everything was the same in the France3 broadcast, except for a ‘tiny’ detail – the “out” part of the slogan had mysteriously vanished from the image.
The photo-doctoring did not escape sharp-eyed watchers, who promptly accused the broadcaster of “censorship.” The replay of the program is publicly available online, and France3 acknowledged the blunder, blaming it on a “mistake.”
“There was no intent to hide the sign last night. It’s a human mistake,” the broadcaster tweeted, supplying the unmodified image. “We have identified the source. It will not happen again.”
It remains unclear how, exactly, one can doctor a picture in such fashion by “mistake.” Aside from the uproar and accusations of Orwellian-grade censorship, the blunder triggered a wave of jokes.
Some users “fixed” the picture for France3, doctoring it harder. Here’s an example – the placard now reads “Long Live Macron!”
Others suggested who might have been responsible for such an unfortunate “mistake.” Some jokingly suggested that Alexandre Benalla, the embattled former security aide to Macron, might have had his hand in it.
Benalla has been involved in several high-profile scandals. Namely, he was caught on tape getting up-close and personal with protesters earlier this year. Macron’s aide was “helping” police to beat them … while sporting borrowed police gear himself.

Outraged by the rising cost of living and price hikes on basic services, Israeli citizens who were inspired by the French Yellow Vest movement took to the streets of Tel Aviv demanding concessions from the government.
Wearing bright fluorescent yellow vests, symbolic of the French grassroots movement, some 600 Israeli activists blocked the Azrieli intersection and adjacent roads in the city center, accusing the government of “robbing” the people.
Concerned over the rising price of electricity, water and food, organizers stressed that the “time has come to learn from the French” and that they are “done being nice.” The crowd boldly advised Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet to address their grievances before the “entire country is on fire.”

Their voices were suppressed, however, by police who arrested at least 10 people for disorderly conduct after the crowd paralyzed the city. While being dragged away, one of the organizers, David Mizrahi, warned the officers that “next week there will be 10,000 people.”
The social protest movement, which claims it is not politically motivated, is expected to rise in the coming weeks, after the National Union of Israeli Students called for a mass mobilization in Tel Aviv on December 22. As the Israeli capital gears up to face citizens’ discontent, the Knesset’s Economic Affairs Committee will meet next week to discuss commodity prices.

The number of those detained in France’s nationwide Yellow Vest protests on Saturday, has reached a staggering 1,723. In Paris, the major hotspot of unrest, scores were injured as rallies continued even after sunset.
Film from Ruptly news agency in the capital shows police facing off with demonstrators, who vented their anger well into the late hours. The footage captured officers chasing down demonstrators and later handcuffing them.
Some of them were dragged down the road by law enforcement and placed face down while surrounded by officers. Several people wearing the now iconic yellow vests are also seen in the video with their faces covered in blood.
According to the latest figures provided by the Interior Ministry, 135 people were injured in Paris alone, while the number nationwide has risen to 264. Police also took a beating, with at least 17 officers receiving injuries in the mayhem.
With the country plunging deeper into chaos, authorities made a record number of detentions during the December 8 rallies. Data provided by Interior Minister Christophe Castaner indicates that at least 1,723 were detained and over 1,200 of them were ordered into custody. The figures topped last Saturday’s mayhem, when over 400 arrests were made.

This Saturday was the fourth consecutive weekend of protests, with authorities calling in reinforcements to beef up security. That included sending armored vehicles of the country’s military police (Gendarmerie) to Paris. The hardware was deployed near the iconic Arc de Triomphe, the scene of previous clashes.
Speaking on the aftermath, Paris Deputy Mayor Emmanuel Gregoire confirmed that the latest violence caused “much more damage” to the capital, compared to the previous protests.
The unrest, triggered by the controversial plans for fuel price and tax hikes, seems to be far from dying down. Earlier this week, the government said it has abandoned its plans, but people still took to the streets across France, demanding more concessions from the government, including lower taxes and cost of living, and even the resignation of Emmanuel Macron.

The US president has yet again referred to the massive French protests over a planned rise in fuel tax to promote his own policies.
“I am glad that my friend Emmanuel Macron and the protestors in Paris have agreed with the conclusion I reached two years ago. The Paris Agreement is fatally flawed because it raises the price of energy for responsible countries while whitewashing some of the worst polluters in the world,” he tweeted on Tuesday.
Taking a swipe at Macron’s short-sightedness, Trump lauded his own political wisdom.
“But American taxpayers – and American workers – shouldn’t pay to clean up other countries’ pollution.”
While tweeting about an “agreement” reached between protesters and the French government, Trump apparently meant the 6-month suspension of the fuel tax hikes announced by French Prime Minister on Monday in the light of the escalated violence on the streets.
An 80-year-old woman and three other people have been killed as the protests turned violent, with activists wearing symbolic yellow vests pelting police with stones and getting tear-gassed in return.
There is a second-hand relation between the French fuel tax, which should have been introduced in January, and the Paris Climate Accord. The tax is regarded as one of several steps to cutting carbon emissions 40 percent by the year 2030 compared to 1990, one of the goals outlined by the 2015 agreement.
France is one of the few states that has not backed down on the ambitious pledge, according to a 2017 study.
Trump’s shot at Macron amid violence and chaos in French streets did not sit well with commentators on Twitter, who accused the US commander-in-chief of lacking empathy and hijacking the discussion.
.#Macron is not your friend. He loathes you as much as we do. For many obvious reasons…including tweets like this. While his country is dealing with unrest and riots, you're tweeting BULLSHIT about being 'right.' Always about you, isn't it? Sociopath…#Trump#Paris
— Andy Ostroy (@AndyOstroy) December 4, 2018
Many took offence for Macron, whom Trump called his “friend” despite the two locking horns on almost every issue, ranging from EU trade policies and NATO spending to Macron’s idea of creating a “European army” to protect France from China, Russia and the US.
“Neither he, nor Parisian protesters agree with you on anything,” a user quipped.
A. Macron's not your friend
B. Neither he nor Parisian protesters agree w/you on anything other than your resignation
C. You know as much about climate as you do about the Constitution, aka, nothing
D. You're the biggest polluter of humanity
E. You're demented. Resign
F. Your grade— Lesley Abravanel (@lesleyabravanel) December 4, 2018
It is not the first time Trump addresses French protests to propel his own cause.
On Sunday, the US President baffled many of his followers by tweeting that “large and violent French protests don’t take into account how badly the United States have been treated on trade or on fair and reasonable payments for our GREAT military protection.”
The response online was that of bewilderment and outrage, with Trump’s critics labelling him “narcissistic” and an “amoral monster.”

More than 50 people, most of them police officers, were injured in Toulouse during protests against fuel price hikes. Yellow Vest demonstrations turned into riots, making the southern French city and Paris look like battlefields.
As France struggles to come to grips with the intensity of widespread protests against increasing fuel prices, which have grown violent over the past weeks, authorities in Toulouse said on Sunday that 57 people, including 48 police officers, had been injured in clashes during Saturday’s riots. Five police officers were hospitalized.
Sixteen people were arrested following the disturbances, four of them for “looting two shops in the city center” during the demonstration, a statement said. France’s southwestern city was the scene of unabated violence for hours on Saturday as angry Yellow Vest protesters, who are opposing the French government’s plans to impose new fuel taxes, scuffled with police forces deployed to the area.
Photos published on social media showed protesters erecting barricades and burning fires on the streets of Toulouse. Hooded and masked demonstrators were also seen throwing projectiles at police officers, who responded with heavy use of tear gas.
Dubbed the Yellow Vest movement, the protests have been occurring weekly since November 17 and get their name from the fluorescent ‘hi-viz’ jackets French motorists are required to keep in their car in case of emergencies.
Starting the previous weekend, the rallies evolved and peaked into major clashes between police and protesters, reaching levels of violence unseen for decades in France. Clashes in Paris resulted in more than 130 people being injured –one critically– and in 412 arrests.
