British submarines could face the same fate as Argentina’s lost ARA ‘San Juan’. In his damning 2015 expose on failures aboard Trident, Royal Navy whistleblower William McNeilly warned UK subs share the same faults as the missing vessel.
According to Argentinian media, the final message from the missing submarine was received on November 15. The distress signal said that seawater had entered the ventilation system, causing a battery on the diesel-electric submarine to short-circuit and spark a fire. Forty-four crew members were on board with only an estimated 10 days’ worth of oxygen. The submarine has not been recovered.
In March 2015, naval engineer McNeilly leaked a dossier to WikiLeaks detailing severe safety and security failures aboard the UK’s Trident nuclear-armed submarines and at their base at Faslane in Scotland. He was dishonorably discharged and narrowly avoided criminal prosecution.
In the report – under the heading ‘disaster waiting to happen’ – McNeilly detailed the structural and mechanical failings of the UK submarines; failings that could lead to the same outcome as the lost ARA ‘San Juan’. “I literally warned about water in DC (Direct Current) compartments causing fires and being likely to sink a submarine, a couple of years before submarine ARA ‘San Juan’ made its final call,” he told RT.
McNeilly’s report details a conversation he had with a SWS Navigation Supervisor, recounting a story spookily similar to what is believed to have happened on the missing Argentine submarine. “I got him to tell me about his experiences onboard. He [said he] has experienced four floods and fires onboard,” McNeilly said in his report. “He told me the worst was a flood in the DC equipment space. The whole back section was submerged in electrified water, from the 10 [kilowatt] motor generators.”
According to McNeilly, if naval officers had followed official protocol they would have wound up at the bottom of the ocean, lost forever. “[The SWS Navigation Supervisor] said they were lucky they didn’t follow the normal emergency operating procedure for that incident,” he said. “Due to where the flood was coming from, if they had followed the normal procedure the submarine would’ve been lost.”
The UK’s Trident subs could easily become death traps for British crewmen if McNeilly’s report is to be believed. The whistleblower detailed the severe structural failings of the Trident vessels, warning that above-acceptable levels of condensation could have deadly consequences.
“There was water dripping from the roof onto all sorts of electrics. They told me that there’s a problem with the system and the condensation levels are 15 percent higher than they should be at,” said McNeilly. “I then told them ‘there’s a pump in AMS1 that sprays water on an electrical distribution box.’ One of them said ‘that’s a bit of a design flaw.’ They laughed and changed the subject.”
When the report was initially published, the Royal Navy tried to discredit the former weapons engineer, dismissing the report as utter nonsense. Over the years, claims made in McNeilly’s exposé have been repeatedly proven correct. The UK government has not acted on his warnings.
“The world has seen my warnings about submarine hazards,” McNeilly told RT. “They refused to listen. Now they see the consequences of being ignorant.”

The viral video shows the cruise ship being thrown about by the storm, with the swimming pool rocking with the motion.
Whilst the pool is empty, the water inside it is thrown outside of it, whilst workers cling to the sides next to it.
The Youtube video, which has had over 530,000 views, also shows the ship being battered by huge waves that reach the top of the ship.
It is a terrifying storm that the ship manages to survive against.
The huge waves throw a sea of spray against the ship, preventing the camera from being able to see anything amongst the haze.
In the final part of the video, the storm can be seen to eventually calm down, whilst the water still has choppy waves that the ship battles through.
Youtube users were impressed with the size of the storm.
One wrote: “An 88,000 ton ship being tossed around like a toy. Love it.”
Others found a more positive side to the pool being affected by the storm.
Another commented: “Instant wave pool!”
One user was much less optimistic about the experience.
They remarked: “I think, no, I’m sure this is how people get killed on cruise ships.”
Cruise ships can often survive even the strongest of storms due to their robust build.
One ship was tied up in a port yet still managed to escape because of the stormy weather.
It ends up crashing into another boat, causing chaos in the port.
The narrator of the video ends up being the star of the show.
The incident took place when Iranian fishing boat Shams suffered an engine malfunction 72km off the coast of the Iranian port town of Jask, near the Strait of Hormuz, Fars and Tasnim news agencies reported on Sunday. The vessel was requesting the navy’s help, and Iranian missile-launching warship Falakhan was sent on a rescue mission.
Shortly after the distress signal, a US warship “with the body number 02” approached the boat, but “it was shooed away after receiving a warning” from the Iranian missile-launching warship, Falakhan, according to Fars.
Iranian media did not specify when exactly the incident took place.
Later on Sunday, the US Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT) denied any direct contact with Iranian forces, Reuters reported. According to the US Navy, the USS Tempest, the second Cyclone-class patrol ship, which was operating in the Gulf of Oman September 6, received a distress call from an unidentified vessel. The boat was 75 nautical miles (138km) from the US vessel.
In the meantime, the Nordic Voyager, a motor vessel which was closer to the boat than the Tempest, offered help to the Iranian vessel. The Nordic Voyager, a crude oil tanker, is currently sailing under the flag of the Cayman Islands, according to vesselfinder.com.

The Tempest offered support to the Nordic Voyager but the latter declined the offer, NAVCENT said.
The Nordic Voyager then coordinated additional Iranian Navy assistance for the vessel, the USS Tempest heard over the radio.
“At no time was there any direct contact between the US and Iranian maritime forces,” NAVCENT spokesman Chloe Morgan said, as cited by Reuters.
This year alone has seen a number of similar confrontations between the US and Iran in the region. Last month, a US F/A-18E Super Hornet jet attempting to land on an aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf had to maneuver to dodge an Iranian drone, which came within 31 meters, according to US officials.
US described the interaction as “unsafe and unprofessional.
In July, US warships, including a US Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, fired several warning shots at Iranian patrol boats in the Persian Gulf in what Tehran called a “provocative and unprofessional move.”
Also in July, the USS Thunderbolt fired several warning shots from a heavy machine gun in response to an Iranian vessel’s “provocative actions,” according to Pentagon officials.
In March, American officials claimed that US warships were “harassed” by Iranian forces in the Strait of Hormuz. Washington then said that the Iranians had their weapons uncovered, manned, and armed.

A US Navy destroyer was involved in a collision with a merchant vessel off the coast of Singapore on Sunday, the Navy said.
The destroyer, the USS John S. McCain, collided with the vessel Alnic MC at 6:24 a.m. local time, according to a Navy statement.
The Navy is treating the incident as an accident, according to NBC News.
The collision occurred east of Singapore and the Strait of Malacca as the destroyer was heading to Singapore for a routine port visit.
There were no immediate reports of injuries, although the Navy said a search-and-rescue operation was underway.
The warship “sustained damage to her port side aft,” or the back-left portion of the ship, according to the Navy statement.
The merchant vessel is identified by MarineTraffic.com as a tanker sailing under the Liberian flag.
US Sen. John McCain, whose father and grandfather are the ship’s namesake, offered his condolences in a tweet Sunday evening.
“Cindy & I are keeping America’s sailors aboard the USS John S McCain in our prayers tonight – appreciate the work of search & rescue crews,” McCain said.

The collision is the second such incident for the Navy in two months — the USS Fitzgerald collided with a merchant vessel southwest of Japan in mid-June.
McCain had recently visited the warship in Vietnam, according to Fox News, which added that earlier this month, the ship sailed past contested man-made islands in the South China Sea.

Defense Minister Tomomi Inada ordered the Izumo Maritime Self-Defense Force helicopter carrier to protect a US Navy supply ship, which is heading towards the Pacific to resupply the American armada sent by Donald Trump to keep North Korean nuclear ambitions at bay, sources told Kyodo news.
The Japanese helicopter carrier is set to depart Yokosuka port in Kanagawa Prefecture to Monday to escort the US Navy supply ship from waters off the Boso Peninsula, near Tokyo, to the area off Shikoku, one of the four main islands of Japan.
Japanese media reports that the US ship could be delivering supplies to the aircraft carrier – the USS Carl Vinson striking group, that is now conducting a joint exercise with South Korea’s navy in the Sea of Japan.
To ensure success of their escort mission, the Japanese seamen have been authorized the “minimum necessary use of weapons,” to deter any attacks amid North Korean threats to sink US ships, the Japan Times reports.
It has not been specified if this is a one-time mission and how many American ships Izumo will protect.

The US Navy strike group heading toward the Korean Peninsula entered the Sea of Japan last Saturday. Two Japanese destroyers, the Samidare and the Ashigara joined the USS Carl Vinson’s group to carry out “various tactical exercises.”
Tensions between North Korea and the US have been growing exponentially over the past few weeks, as the US has repeatedly pressed Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear and missile programs.
President Donald Trump sent the USS Carl Vinson into Korean waters as part of a “very powerful armada” in order to intimidate Pyongyang, which has continued to test new ballistic missiles, despite all the warnings, UN sanctions and international condemnation.
Last Monday, North Korea threaten to reduce a US strike force to a sea wreck in case of provocations.
“Our revolutionary forces are combat-ready to sink a US nuclear powered aircraft carrier with a single strike,” according to Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of the North’s ruling Workers’ Party.
Monday’s Izumo deployment will set a new milestone for the Japanese Navy which has not escorted any military vessels, outside of troop exercises, since the adoption of a pacifist constitution following Japan’s defeat in World War II.
In 2015, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the ruling Liberal Democratic Party passed legislation to allow the country’s military to participate in foreign conflicts, overturning its previous policy of fighting only in self-defense.
Since the Japanese constitution only allowed Japanese armed forces to act in self-defense, the legislation reinterpreted the relevant passages to allow the military to operate with overseas allies in “collective self-defense.”

US Coast Guard
Over the last two years, the US Coast Guard has been committing personnel and resources to known drug-transit zones, bringing intelligence and investigative resources to bear in an effort to crack down on traffickers and the flow of drugs north to the voracious US market.
These efforts have yielded a number of large seizures in recent months.
On February 12, the crew of Coast Guard Cutter Stratton, on a counter-smuggling patrol in the eastern Pacific Ocean, encountered and intercepted suspected smugglers aboard a fast boat in international waters.
Footage released by the US government shows Coast Guard boarding officers stopping and boarding the suspected smuggling vessel, apprehending the people on board and conducting a search.
The February 12 incident was not the Stratton’s only encounter with suspected smugglers while it was at sea. On February 13, the Coast Guard vessel pursued a suspected smuggling boat in the eastern Pacific, eventually stopping it.
On February 23, the Stratton stopped and boarded another suspected smuggling boat in the Pacific.
The crew of the Stratton, a 418-foot Cutter launched in July 2010 and based out of Alameda, California, hauled in a total of 3,700 pounds of cocaine during its counter-smuggling patrol.
US Coast Guard
On March 31, US Coast Guard officials in San Diego offloaded roughly 6 tons of cocaine seized in the eastern Pacific by four of the service’s cutters from late January through February.
The offloading of the drugs, done at San Diego’s Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal, was overseen by the Stratton’s commanding officer.
Earlier this week, the crew of Coast Guard cutter James docked in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with a load of 16 tons of cocaine, seized by it, other Coast Guard cutters, and international partners in the eastern Pacific over a 26-day period.
The cocaine, seized during 17 interdictions, was valued at $ 420 million wholesale and more than a billion dollars on the street.
