Verizon’s lower-cost unlimited plan now works in Canada and Mexico https://briefnews.eu/verizons-lower-cost-unlimited-plan-now-works-in-canada-and-mexico/ https://briefnews.eu/verizons-lower-cost-unlimited-plan-now-works-in-canada-and-mexico/#respond Sun, 21 Jan 2018 10:26:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/verizons-lower-cost-unlimited-plan-now-works-in-canada-and-mexico/

Verizon’s latest unlimited plans may have some undesirable… limits, but at least you won’t have to pay for the more expensive plan the next time you’re on a North American vacation. As of January 25th, the $ 75 Go Unlimited plan will include calling, data and text while you’re in Canada or Mexico. This applies to both new and existing customers, so you won’t have to touch a thing to surf the web in Vancouver. As with the Beyond Unlimited plan, though, there are some gotchas to watch out for.

The big catch: you can’t use more than 512MB of LTE data per day, with speeds throttling to 2G after that. That’s fine for Instagram photos or checking your email, but you won’t be watching TV shows on your trip to Cancun. Also, if more than half of your calling, texting or data is in Canada or Mexico during a 60-day period, you might see those international features “removed or limited.” This isn’t for travelers who regularly spend their time outside of the US.

In a sense, Verizon is keeping up with the Joneses. T-Mobile offers free roaming in Canada and Mexico on its base One plan, for instance — it just imposes a 5GB monthly cap instead of daily restrictions. Nonetheless, it’s good to see one more carrier that no longer demands a premium just because you’ve crossed the border.

Bloomberg: Verizon’s new NFL streaming deal will stretch to TV https://briefnews.eu/bloomberg-verizons-new-nfl-streaming-deal-will-stretch-to-tv/ https://briefnews.eu/bloomberg-verizons-new-nfl-streaming-deal-will-stretch-to-tv/#respond Sat, 18 Nov 2017 12:35:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bloomberg-verizons-new-nfl-streaming-deal-will-stretch-to-tv/

Since 2010, Verizon’s wireless arm has had an arrangement for streaming NFL games to phones (and, after they became a thing, also tablets), but Bloomberg reports it will stretch to TVs soon. According to unnamed sources, both parties are close to a new deal that will not only include all sizes of screens but also drop the company’s exclusivity. That’s key even for people who don’t have Verizon because until now, it has kept internet TV services like DirecTV Now and Sling TV from streaming NFL games to mobile devices. On Verizon’s end, expanding and adding content from sources like the NBA and NFL is expected to “prime the pump” according to Bloomberg, for the whole Oath media unit (which Engadget is a part of.)

T-Mobile boasts more loyal customers than any of the other Big Four telecoms, according to BI Intelligence’s exclusive Digital Telecom Consumer survey.

In fact, almost a quarter of T-Mobile’s subscriber base said they wouldn’t switch mobile carriers for anything. Customer loyalty among the three other big US telecoms is low in comparison:

  • AT&T’s and Verizon’s customer bases aren’t nearly as loyal T-Mobile’s. Only 16% of AT&T subscribers said they wouldn’t switch on account of competing features. And an almost equal share of Verizon’s customers expressed the same sentiment — 15% said they wouldn’t switch.
  • Sprint ranked worst for customer loyalty among the Big Four. Only 7% of Sprint’s wireless subscribers said they wouldn’t switch carriers for anything.

The results are a huge win for T-Mobile — customer loyalty matters to US telecoms now more now than ever, for several reasons:

  • US smartphone penetration is approaching saturation, causing mobile carriers to fight over each other’s subscribers. About 95% of Americans own a cell phone and 77% own a smartphone, according to Pew Research, making new subscribers a rare commodity.
  • To win that fight, mobile carriers are engaging in a price war, which is compressing margins — and making customer volume more important than ever. Average revenue per user across the Big Four dropped to $ 45 in Q1 2017, from $ 49 in Q1 2014. To remain profitable, carriers need to maintain or grow their customer base.
  • The end of the two-year contract has made it easier for consumers to switch providers. Consumers have long been tethered to their carriers via contracts — being able to switch carriers quickly and without penalty makes loyal customers especially valuable for telecoms.

But a more loyal customer base can only go so far in protecting T-Mobile from aggressive competition. Forty-two percent of T-Mobile subscribers said they’d switch to a provider that offered better coverage where they live. This is higher than both AT&T and Verizon.

BI Intelligence’s Digital Telecom Consumer survey examines consumers’ preferences and ratings of the major US telecoms and the features they provide. It rates Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint, and other mobile carriers on loyalty and user experience, and it looks at consumers’ real must-haves. The full report will be available to BI Intelligence enterprise clients in October. To get access to this report the moment it becomes available, email Matt Jackson (mjackson@businessinsider.com).

Oath CEO Tim Armstrong has changed his story on Verizon’s ad ambitions (VZ) https://briefnews.eu/oath-ceo-tim-armstrong-has-changed-his-story-on-verizons-ad-ambitions-vz/ https://briefnews.eu/oath-ceo-tim-armstrong-has-changed-his-story-on-verizons-ad-ambitions-vz/#respond Thu, 28 Sep 2017 07:20:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/oath-ceo-tim-armstrong-has-changed-his-story-on-verizons-ad-ambitions-vz/ Tim ArmstrongVerizon’s Oath message has changed from data-driven targeting toward showcasing a stable of content brands.
CEO Tim Armstrong is talking less about challenging Facebook and Google and ad targeting overall.
During an Advertising Week keynote, however, he did say YouTube’s recent issues with brand safety helped Oath bring in more ad revenue.

Oath CEO Tim Armstrong has seemingly changed his story on Verizon’s ad ambitions.

When Verizon purchased AOL for $ 4.4 billion, the emphasis was on the powerful potential of combining AOL’s advertising-technology assets with Verizon’s vast pools of consumer data. The $ 4.48 billion acquisition of Yahoo, which gave the wireless giant access to millions more web consumers along with another set of ad-tech systems and consumer data, was only going to help take that to another level.

Not long ago, Armstrong was telling ad buyers that Verizon’s data and AOL and Yahoo’s scale were going to help the company challenge Facebook and Google. If Facebook’s ad-targeting strength is drawn from its users’ self-reported personal data, and Google’s power came from billions of people typing into search boxes what they are interested in, Verizon has unique data on over 145 million subscribers, such as where they live and what kind of apps they use. That could be hugely powerful for ad targeting.

But Armstrong has noticeably backed off that claim recently while seriously downplaying the data-driven ad-targeting rationale behind the Verizon deals. Instead, the emphasis on Oath — the new name for the Verizon/AOL/Yahoo mash-up — is about being a “house of brands.”

That message is apparent in the company’s new marketing campaign, which includes a video featuring former Public Enemy front man Chuck D talking about people’s love of coffee and sneakers and other brands.

In fact, during an Advertising Week keynote on Tuesday, Armstrong was asked repeatedly by CNBC anchor Julia Boorstin whether Oath could seriously take on Google and Facebook — and he largely demurred.

“Having a strategy of being in business because people don’t like Google and Facebook is a bad strategy,” he said.

Boorstin also pressed Armstrong several times to articulate the big-picture motivation behind Verizon assembling all these digital assets, and he scarcely mentioned data and ad targeting.

Instead, Armstrong described what he saw as two big moves Verizon was newly able to make. The company is planning to push Oath brands like HuffPost and TechCrunch onto more people’s Android phones via a product called AppFlash. In addition, Oath wants to explore ways down the road to subsidize content and services for consumers, presumably to keep them more loyal to the wireless carrier.

When it comes to battling the duopoly, he said as Google and Facebook were in a war, Oath could serve as an “arms dealer.”

But did Verizon really spend over $ 8 billion for AOL and Yahoo to get Tumblr and Yahoo Sports on more people’s phones? It’s not clear how this will happen for millions of iPhone users who interact with Verizon only when they pay their bill.

Could Armstrong be downplaying Verizon’s data-driven plans to avoid the attention of regulators? The threat of consumer-privacy legislation? Or just to lower expectations?

Armstrong was vague regarding Verizon’s long-term digital-media game plan, saying, “We’re still in the second inning.”

He alluded to the privacy dance Verizon has to navigate, arguing that its consumer data offered an “opportunity and a challenge.” He said wireless providers were under more scrutiny than Silicon Valley companies.

It’s a far cry from recent talk of taking on digital ad titans and aspiring to build the “number one media and tech company in the world,” as he told Recode in 2016.

Still, Armstrong did hint that competition with Facebook and Google was still a goal. He told Boorstin that when YouTube saw a slew of advertisers pull back on spending after some ads were spotted next to dicey videos, “our revenue went up.”

(Reuters) – Verizon Communications Inc’s quarterly revenue rose marginally, its first increase in four quarters, as the No. 1 U.S. wireless carrier attracted more subscribers with its unlimited data plans.

Net income attributable to Verizon rose to $ 4.36 billion, or $ 1.07 per share, in the second quarter ended June 30, from $ 702 million, or 17 cents per share, a year earlier.

The latest quarter included a gain from the sale of some data centers and charges related to its acquisition of Yahoo Inc’s operating business. Expenses also fell sharply from the year earlier quarter.

Excluding items, earnings per share was 96 cents per share.

Total operating revenue rose marginally to $ 30.55 billion from $ 30.53 billion a year earlier. (Reporting by Aishwarya Venugopal in Bengaluru; Editing by Saumyadeb Chakrabarty)

Verizon’s plan to create a data powerhouse to challenge Facebook and Google is fraught with challenges https://briefnews.eu/verizons-plan-to-create-a-data-powerhouse-to-challenge-facebook-and-google-is-fraught-with-challenges-2/ https://briefnews.eu/verizons-plan-to-create-a-data-powerhouse-to-challenge-facebook-and-google-is-fraught-with-challenges-2/#respond Sun, 02 Jul 2017 20:29:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/verizons-plan-to-create-a-data-powerhouse-to-challenge-facebook-and-google-is-fraught-with-challenges-2/ switchboard telephone operatorWikimedia Commons

Verizon, or more specifically it’s newly formed digital media division Oath, has an intriguing new plan. It wants to put together a wireless data powerhouse in its quest to challenge Facebook and Google in digital advertising.

Specifically, the company wants to rent reams of consumer data from major competitors like Sprint, T-Mobile, Vodafone and Telefonica that can be used for ad targeting.

Call it the Hulu of wireless data.

Besides the unusual competitive politics involved in such an undertaking (who’s in charge? How are we getting paid), it’s worth asking, what would such an arrangement look like when it comes to execution? Just how hard is this going to be from a technical perspective? Business Insider talked to some experts about what Oath will be facing in putting such an endeavor together.

Here are some of their big questions:

How hard will it be to mix different data from different wireless companies?

Austin Wright, senior vice president of strategy at the data-centric marketing firm Ansira, said that just stitching together the multiple data sets together will be a Herculean challenge, since each provider “may be supplying data at different levels.” For example, one carrier may supply more granular numbers on its customers, while another may provide summarized data, or data on broad segments of consumers.

“Let’s say Verizon’s data is tracked on zip code, and T-Mobile is based on households,” said Jeff Smith, chief marketing officer at LiveRamp, which helps marketers move data between different systems. “That’s not that simple. It’s not just a few more columns in the spreadsheet.”

Plus, some carriers may estimate portions of their consumer data, Wright said, while another may focus on more raw numbers. And some data may come from households with multiple accounts, such as family plans.

“All of which further complicates matters,” Wright said.

How with the data integration actually work?

Smith said that Oath and its would-be partners have to figure out whether they will mix and match the data themselves, or do so virtually using a third party tech company. Doing it yourself can be messy, he explained.

You either need a third party that has built software designed to reconcile reams of data, or you “need some data scientists,” he said. Smith pointed to comScore’s acquisition of Rentrak last year as a model of how big companies with big data sets were able to mesh them together quickly with the help of third parties.

Smith estimated that working with an outside vendor could take Verizon and company six to nine months to make its mixed data sets useful, while the DIY option could take more than a year.

Steven Wolfe Pereira, chief marketing officer at Neustar, a tech company specializing in data management, noted the recent string of cyber attacks as making security concerns even more paramount.

That means that Oath and friends will not only have to make sure that nobody’s real names or addresses are shared among partners or with the outside world, but also have to take steps to ensure that whatever consumers have or have not permitted individual carriers to track is respected even as advertisers look to run big campaigns that employ data from multiple carriers.

“For example, there will have to be a way to make sure that advertisers can control how frequently they show people messages and don’t creep people out,” said Wolfe Pereira.

Another security issue of importance is making sure that carriers don’t learn too much about their competitors’ customers. “You don’t want Sprint to start prospecting T-Mobile’s customers,” said Smith.

microsoft excel spreadsheetShutterstockAll that being said, if Oath actually pulls this off, will marketers be interested?

“Yes!,” Wright said. “Most advertisers are continually serving up most of their ad budget to a handful of sources …They want other options.”

“Email addresses, web cookies, these are fractional identifiers for marketers,” said Wolfe Pereira. “But the phone number is one of the most persistent identifiers, and it can be tied to a bill in your home. You can theoretically track people’s online and offline behavior.”

That has powerful applications for ad targeting, he said. “When it’s anonymized, and done the right way, it’s a really smart play.”
