Verizon will give all its subscribers free access to its spam alert and call blocking tools, so long as their phones can support the features. The carrier originally rolled out those tools over a year ago as part of its $ 3-per-month Call Filter add-on. But starting in March, subscribers with compatible smartphones (including iPhone and Android devices) will be able fend off unwanted robocalls without having to pay extra. Verizon says it will release more info on how to sign up for the free tools near their launch date.

The company also says that it has committed to supporting the new STIR/SHAKEN technology that can authenticate a call’s origin and can alert subscribers if it’s a spoofed call. As you know, robocallers use spoofing to mask their real numbers to, say, make it appear as if the call is coming from the recipient’s location. That increases the chances of the recipient picking up the phone and falling prey to their schemes.

In late 2018, the FCC asked voice providers to adopt the STIR/SHAKEN framework to combat illegal robocalls, and it looks like Verizon followed the commission’s orders. In addition to rolling out anti-spam tools to the public, the carrier said it has implemented programs that will prevent robocallers from using its network. It’s also throwing its weight behind the Telephone Robocall Abuse Criminal Enforcement and Deterrence Act or TRACED, which will give the FCC broader authority to penalize robocallers.

Last year, Verizon offered unlimited subscribers six months of free access to Apple Music. Now the carrier is expanding that partnership and officially bundling Beyond Unlimited and Above Unlimited subscriptions with the service. Starting on January 17th, all new and existing customers will be able to enjoy Apple Music at no additional cost. So, those who took advantage of the offer last year will be able to continue accessing the streaming service without having to pay its $ 10-a-month fee.

According to Verizon VP of Marketing Angie Klein, the company is expanding its partnership with Apple Music, because the original 6-month offer was a hit with customers. Unfortunately, only two out of three unlimited plans are getting Apple Music as a permanent perk. Its cheapest option, Go Unlimited, will still come bundled with free access to the service, but only for six months.

Verizon is parting ways with 10,400 employees in “a voluntary separation program,” despite the Trump administration providing a tax cut and various deregulatory changes that were supposed to increase investment in jobs and broadband networks. The cuts represent nearly seven percent of Verizon’s workforce and were announced along with a $ 4.6 billion charge related to struggles in Verizon’s Yahoo/AOL business division.

Verizon described the voluntary buyouts as well as ongoing Yahoo/AOL failures in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing on Tuesday. The buyouts affect “US-based management employees” in multiple business segments, not just Yahoo and AOL.

Verizon Wireless service is back up and running “essentially everywhere” throughout the area hit by Hurricane Michael, the company said today.

“Verizon engineers and fiber crews have been working around the clock after unprecedented damage to our fiber infrastructure caused by the most intense storm in history to make landfall in the Panhandle,” Verizon’s announcement said. “Services for our customers and first responders are back up and running today, providing wireless coverage essentially everywhere it was before Hurricane Michael hit.”

Verizon had faced repeated criticism from Florida Governor Rick Scott, who said Verizon lagged behind AT&T and other carriers in restoring service after the Category 4 hurricane made landfall on October 10. Scott last week suggested that Verizon misled the public about its post-hurricane recovery, saying that Verizon’s claim of covering “98 percent of Florida” was only accurate because it included customers “hundreds of miles away from impacted areas.”

The largest mobile telecommunications provider in the US, Verizon Wireless, has been experiencing massive outages. East Coast and south of the country have been reportedly hit the hardest by the disruption.

“Verizon Wireless is currently experiencing an intermittent voice, text and data services interruption for customers in some markets in the south. Our engineers are aware of the issue and are working diligently to resolve it,” the telecom giant’s Support service posted on Twitter.

The East Coast and the south of the country seem to be affected by the outage the most, according to the website DownDetector.

Verzion Wireless enjoys a solid first place as the US largest telecommunications provider. Last year, it had nearly 150 million subscribers.

Senate Democrats yesterday asked the Federal Communications Commission to investigate Verizon’s throttling of firefighters during California’s largest-ever wildfire.

US Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) also sent a letter to Verizon, accusing the carrier of misleading the fire department in its marketing of unlimited data. Additionally, the Democrats sent letters to the other major carriers asking for commitments that they won’t throttle the data of public safety officials while they are responding to emergencies.

Though FCC Chairman Ajit Pai eliminated net neutrality rules, the commission maintains a revised version of a transparency rule that requires carriers to publicly disclose enough information about network management practices and commercial terms of service “to enable consumers to make informed choices regarding the purchase and use of such services.”

Verizon Wireless today said it has temporarily stopped throttling the data of firefighters and other first responders on the West Coast and in Hawaii and will soon introduce a new unlimited plan “with no caps” and with priority access for first responders.

“As of yesterday, we removed all speed cap restrictions for first responders on the West Coast and in Hawaii to support current firefighting and Hurricane Lane efforts,” Verizon’s announcement today said. “Further, in the event of another disaster, Verizon will lift restrictions on public safety customers, providing full network access.”

Next week, Verizon said it will provide full details on “a new plan that will feature unlimited data, with no caps on mobile solutions and automatically includes priority access.”

Verizon officials were contrite and apologetic during a California State Assembly committee hearing that was convened Friday to examine mobile Internet throttling experienced by firefighters during recent blazes.

“We all make mistakes from time to time, the true measure of leadership is how soon we admit it, own it,” Rudy Reyes told the Select Committee on Natural Disaster, Response, Recovery, and Rebuilding after reading from a statement that the company released hours earlier.

In that statement, Verizon said it would be introducing a “new plan” with truly unlimited data and “priority access” for first responders nationwide.
