Former FBI Director James Comey has admitted the Steele dossier was still uncorroborated by the FBI at the time he left the bureau. The infamous dossier was used by the FBI to monitor Trump aide Carter Page. The House Oversight Committee has released a 235-page transcript of Comey’s grilling 24 hours after the former FBI director was questioned by lawmakers on the Capitol Hill. While Comey, who was fired by Trump in May 2017, tried hard not to spill the beans, he let out one startling confession – the FBI did not verify the scandalous dossier compiled by ex-British spy Christopher Steele before it went to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court where it was used to obtain a warrant on Trump’s former campaign advisor Carter Page. READ MORE: FISA abuse accusations ‘nonsense’ says Comey, dodging dossier question Responding to Rep. Ratcliffe, (R-Texas), Comey admitted that before signing off on the FISA warrant in October 2016, he repeatedly referred to the dossier as lacking credibility, but said that he did not know that he “was referring to all of it.” “Maybe I was, but I had in mind some particular portions of it that were salacious and unverified,” Comey said during his closed-door testimony. That, however, did not stop Comey from submitting the dossier to the FISA court as evidence of the Trump campaign’s alleged ties to Russia. Describing Steele as “a reliable source with a track record,” Comey admitted that his work was not double-checked by the FBI. “But what I understand by verified is we then try to replicate the source information so that it becomes FBI investigation and our conclusions rather than a reliable source’s. That’s what I understand it, the difference to be. And that work wasn’t completed by the time I left in May of 2017, to my knowledge,” Comey said. The Nunes memo, released by the Republican-controlled House Intelligence Committee in February, has revealed that Steele was dumped as an FBI source over his leaks to the media. The FBI documents released in August confirm that the FBI terminated formal relations with Steele a week before the 2016 elections. According to the memo, the dossier “formed an essential part” of the warrant obtained from a FISA court on October 21, 2016. While the transcript of Comey’s testimony has 235 pages in total, many were disappointed with the way Comey, who appeared to have an incredibly weak memory as he stood before the committee, dodged many of the critical questions. Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) counted that Comey answered “don’t know” a whopping 166 times, “I don’t remember” – 71 times and “I don’t’ recall” – 8 times. James Comey: “I don’t recall”—8 times AND he said he didn’t know that — Rep. Jim Jordan (@Jim_Jordan) December 8, 2018 During his questioning, Comey reiterated that the dossier did not trigger the investigation into the Trump campaign’s supposed ties to Russia. The former director said that it was a meeting between former Trump campaign foreign policy aide George Papadopoulos and London-based professor Joseph Mifsud in March 2016 that kickstarted the investigation. Mifsud allegedly told Papadopoulos of the emails stolen from Clinton’s Campaign by ‘Russian hackers.’ “It was weeks or months later that the so-called Steele dossier came to our attention,” Comey said. Comey previously dismissed accusations that the bureau did not follow procedure in obtaining a warrant on Page as “nonsense”. “The notion that FISA was abused here is nonsense,” Comey said while leaving the Capitol Hill on Friday following his testimony. The explanation, however, did not sit well with Republicans. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) who is chair-designate of the Senate Judiciary Committee, tweeted that “the process used to obtain a FISA warrant – and its multiple renewals – against Carter Page should disturb every American.” “I look forward to having an in-depth discussion with former FBI Director Comey about his assertion that challenges against the FISA warrant process – based on the Steele dossier – are ‘nonsense,'” he added. In my view the process used to obtain a FISA warrant – and its multiple renewals – against Carter Page should disturb every American. I intend to get to the bottom of what happened if I am Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. — Lindsey Graham (@LindseyGrahamSC) December 8, 2018 Like this story? Share it with a friend!

Following similar moves from Facebook and Twitter, Google has now announced how it will be handling political ads going forward. All three have been compelled to address the issues that arose from the last US presidential election, during which Russian groups purchased election ads aimed at sowing political discord. In a blog post, Google Senior VP Kent Walker described some of the measures the company will be taking now and in the near future.
Anyone who wants to purchase a US election ad through Google will now have to confirm that they are a US citizen or lawful permanent resident and will be required to provide a government-issued ID or other documents in order to verify their identity. Once purchased, political ads will also have to display who is paying for them. This summer, Google says it will also release an election ad transparency report that will show who is buying political ads and how much money is being spent on them. And the company will release a library through which users can search for specific election ads and see who bought them.
Outside of ads, Google developed Protect Your Election — a set of tools that will help those at greater risk of cyberattacks — and will work with the National Cyber Security Alliance and Harvard Kennedy School’s Digital Democracy Project to fund online security training programs for those involved in political campaigns.
Last month, Facebook began implementing its new political ad verification efforts, which include confirming ad-purchasers’ identities, labeling political ads as such and requiring those ads to disclose who paid for them. Twitter also recently agreed to support the Honest Ads Act, which will require more transparency surrounding election advertisements.

]]>“We’re not in a position at this point to independently verify the allegations [about the alleged chemical attack in Douma], but, obviously, any allegation of continued use of chemical weapons is extremely, extremely troubling,” Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said in a statement on Monday evening.
On Saturday, several rebel-linked activists, including the controversial White Helmets group, accused the Syrian government of carrying out a chemical attack that allegedly affected dozens of civilians in the town of Douma in Eastern Ghouta, some 10km from Damascus.

The West swiftly reacted to the report with pointing the finger at Damascus and Moscow. US President Donald Trump hastily called the alleged incident a “humanitarian disaster for no reason whatsoever,” warning that a “big price” would be paid.
US envoy to the UN Nikki Haley considers the alleged chemical attack in the enclave as a proven fact, and blames Russian “obstructionism” and the “monster” Bashar Assad for the incident. The US envoy stressed that if the UN refuses to follow the US lead and intervene in Syria due to “Russia’s obstructionism,” Washington would respond alone.
On Monday, the US president also promised to decide on potential actions against Syria within 24-48 hours, adding that “nothing is off the table.”
“We have a lot of options militarily, and we’ll be letting you know pretty soon,” Trump said at a meeting with military commanders.
Syria and Russia have dismissed all accusations, calling the reports merely fake news that is aimed solely at helping terrorists and justifying potential strikes against Syrian government forces. Moscow noted that it had repeatedly warned about false-flag attacks being prepared in recent months.
On Monday, Russia proposed to create an independent investigative mechanism in relation to the incident, promising, along with the Syrian Army, to guarantee prompt access for experts to the area. Russia’s envoy to the UN Vassily Nebenzia stressed that Moscow is ready to serve as a guarantor of security for experts from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), who would inspect the site of the alleged attack. Reacting to Trump’s harsh statements, Nebenzia warned the US and its allies against “fishing in murky waters” of the Middle East, causing further chaos there.

Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg on Friday endorsed U.S. legislation to regulate political ads across the internet, a concession to lawmakers days before he is scheduled to testify in two U.S. congressional hearings.
Zuckerberg also said Facebook would begin requiring people who want to run ads on the social network addressing political issues to verify their identity and location. That expands an earlier plan to require such verification for ads directly about elections.
“Election interference is a problem that’s bigger than any one platform, and that’s why we support the Honest Ads Act,” Zuckerberg wrote in a Facebook post on Friday.
That legislation was introduced last October to counter concerns about foreign nationals using social media to influence American politics, an issue being looked at as part of an investigation into possible Russian meddling during the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign.
Facebook disclosed in September that Russians under fake names had used the social network to try to influence U.S. voters in the months before and after the 2016 election, writing about inflammatory subjects, setting up events and buying ads.
In February, U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller charged 13 Russians and three Russian companies with interfering in the election by sowing discord on social media.
The legislation would expand existing election law covering television and radio outlets to apply to paid internet and digital advertisements on platforms like Facebook, Twitter Inc and Alphabet Inc’s Google.
Facebook had previously stopped short of backing the legislation, saying it wanted to work with lawmakers further and announcing attempts at self-regulation.
Zuckerberg is scheduled to appear on Tuesday before a joint hearing of two U.S. Senate committees, and on Wednesday before a U.S. House committee.
Under the Honest Ads Act, digital platforms with at least 50 million monthly views would need to maintain a public file of all electioneering communications purchased by anyone spending more than $500.
Zuckerberg said on Friday that he also wanted to shed more light on “issue ads,” or ads that discuss a political subject but do not directly relate to an election or a candidacy.
Issue ads are frequently run by interest groups, lobbying organizations and wealthy individuals who want to influence legislation or have an indirect impact on an election.
Every advertiser who wants to run an issue ad will need to confirm their identity and location, Zuckerberg wrote.

NASA announced this week that it’s looking for some citizen scientists to help out with a project. Six orbiting instruments make up NASA’s Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) project and they are used to study Earth’s climate and the role clouds play in climate change. But sometimes it’s hard for these instruments to differentiate clouds from other Earthly things. For example, NASA says that thin, wispy cirrus clouds and snow can easily be confused because they’re both cold and bright. Differentiation gets even more difficult when these clouds hang out above patches of snow. And that’s where citizen scientists come in.
NASA’s looking for people to take pictures of clouds in the sky and share them through an app. If you time your photos to coincide with CERES satellites passing overhead, NASA can then compare the images taken from the instruments with the images taken from individuals down below and make sure what’s being noted by its satellites as a cloud really is a cloud. “Looking at what an observer recorded as clouds and looking at their surface observations really helps us better understand the images that were matched from the satellite,” Marilé Colón Robles, who heads NASA’s GLOBE clouds team, said in a statement.
You can submit up to 10 photos per day between now and April 15th through the GLOBE Observer app. This is a particularly important time for the project because the seasons are changing, meaning the clouds are too. And the most recent addition to the CERES team is a satellite that was launched in November and began taking measurements in January. So NASA needs help verifying its data in particular.
You can find out more about how to take part and how to time your photos with passing satellites here. If you do manage to snap a pic within the same timeframe as an overhead satellite, NASA will send you an email within one week of your submission that shows you your image as well as the satellite’s. You can check out some tips on how to observe clouds here.

For over a decade, Customs and Border Protection has failed to properly verify e-passports (which contain biometric data) as “it lacked the software to do so,” according to a new letter sent by two top senators.
According to a 2010 report authored by the Government Accountability Office, the problem needed fixing then—and eight years later it still hasn’t been resolved.
An e-passport is essentially a passport that includes machine-readable RFID chips containing a traveler’s personal information. These more digitally secure passports, which began to be required by the United States for visitors form visa waiver countries beginning in 2007, are scanned at the border by a CBP agent’s computer. However, without a digital signature, it is impossible to validate that the data contained on the passport is actually authentic.
]]>Facebook has a new yet very old solution to fighting Russian manipulation attempts during future US elections: conventional mail. Global policy program director Katie Harbath has revealed that the social network will send postcards to verify the identities and locations of anyone hoping to buy ads related to federal-level candidates. Recipients will have to enter a code on the postcard to prove that they are, in fact, living in the US. The requirement won’t apply to state-level candidates or ads based around issues.
There’s no specific time frame for when the cards will take effect, but they should be in use before the 2018 mid-term elections in November.
Harbath acknowledged to Reuters that this “won’t solve everything.” A determined foreign manipulation effort could rely on US-based volunteers, for instance, and this won’t help if there are any plans to skew smaller votes. There’s also no mention of using this approach for other countries. However, this could thwart many ‘casual’ attempts at persuading voters from afar, and might help Facebook address politicians’ concerns that it isn’t doing enough to keep Russia from meddling in American politics.

Pay-per-mile car insurance service Metromile is touting a new “first of its kind” automated claims system designed to speed up the process of verifying and paying out claims.
Metromile’s new artificial intelligence (AI)-powered claims assistant, dubbed Ava, promises to reduce the manual processes traditionally required to collect a claimant’s details and issue payments.
Founded in 2011, Metromile operates across a number of key U.S. states, including California, Illinois, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington. The company offers a device called the Metromile Pulse, which drivers plug into their car to monitor their time on the road. Connected to this, Metromile also offers car insurance that has a pipeline into Metromile data to offer insurance based on the number of actual road hours. This is perfect for ride-sharing services such as Uber, which Metromile previously partnered with to let drivers pay insurance only for the time they’re on the roads.
Using similar data derived from Pulse, Ava can reconstruct the scene of an accident to determine what happened. If the data backs up the claims made by the driver, the company said that it’s able to automatically approve payments “within seconds.”
Above: Metromile AVA
If Ava detects something that doesn’t add up, it then flags the file for a human reviewer within the in-house claims team. The company said that Ava will only be able to deal with “certain claim types” at first, though it didn’t divulge what those will be — we have sought clarification and will update here when we find out.
“Instead of relying on traditionally complex processes to handle customers’ claims, our machine learning platform removes the friction associated with getting your car back as soon as possible,” explained Metromile CEO Dan Preston. “The future of insurance is frictionless and fairly priced, which is all enabled by smart use of data. Ava enables us to automate traditional claims handling tasks, allowing our adjusters to do what they do best, service our customers.”
Metromile has raised north of $ 200 million in funding since its inception, cash that was used — in part — to acquire an insurance carrier called the Mosaic Insurance Company to allow Metromile to underwrite its own policies.
Other insurance companies are also turning to automation and AI to expedite the claims process. Lemonade uses chatbots to guide claimants through the claims process, while Sure uses an AI-powered “robo broker” to help users find the best insurance.

OPINION:
Dear Mr. Jack Dorsey,
Federal employees who created so-called alternative @alt government accounts in response to the Trump Administration’s media gag orders need your help. I’m speaking about the people behind such accounts as @altUSEPA, @blm_alt, @realALTNPS, and many others.
As the new administration assaults the established science of climate change, questions the worth of labor statistics, and generally undoes decades of work by dedicated civil servants, these @alt accounts are proving to be a vital bulwark for inconvenient truths. I urge you to work with managers of these @alt accounts, validate their association with the agencies they work for, and grant them verified account status.
“For alt gov accounts, a mechanism for verification would be of assistance in maintaining the integrity of the alt voice,” said the creator of an @alt account, who as a current federal employee requested anonymity. “Alt accounts are speaking different perspectives — some are run by current agency employees, some by former agency employees, and some by outside supporters.”
Managers of @alt accounts tied to federal agencies are confronting the scourge of fake @alt accounts that spread misinformation, behave like evil trolls, and even seek profit. In some ways, it’s not an unexpected result of the anything-goes nature of Twitter. After all, anybody with internet access can create an account and spread fake news at the speed of light. Yet it’s Twitter’s openness that allows for dissent from the @alt accounts in the first place.
“But other accounts using the alt name are more questionable, and for some these fake alt accounts, the goal is simply to build a following that can be exploited financially,” the source told VentureBeat. “Such accounts water down or pollute the message that most of the legitimate alt accounts come together on — a message in support of democracy, of the constitution, of an important role for government in supporting the health and well being of the people of the United States, and for effective work by government to accomplish agency goals.”
It doesn’t have to be this way. Twitter already has a process that can help ensure @alt accounts are indeed what they claim to be. It’s called “verified account status” — the little blue checkmark that Twitter confers upon public figures, journalists, and companies likely to be impersonated.
For instance, conferring a blue checkmark of verification would validate the identities of the people behind these accounts.
Although Twitter is not a journalistic enterprise in the traditional sense, it is a media company, and with that comes certain rights and obligations. While I’m not a lawyer, I’d expect your company can hire skilled attorneys to make a first amendment defense and protect the identities of those federal employees who risk their careers. Not only do you have the resources to fight subpoenas, but it’s a safe bet that your server farms are better protected than a PC in someone’s home.
“Some accounts have told reporters their identities and would likely be willing to share with twitter. Others would absolutely not,” the source said. “Some alt accounts don’t care that much about verification — they are self-policing and calling out accounts that seem illegitimate. But we are also seeing requests from folks on Twitter for a breakdown of who is legit and not — so there is interest and a feeling of need.”
Mr. Dorsey, please verify and safeguard legitimate @alt accounts.
(Note: Twitter did not immediately respond to a request for comment.)
