“The pandemic is over,” President Joe Biden said matter-of-factly in a 60 Minutes interview that aired Sunday night. The impromptu comment immediately drew headlines, as well as criticism from health experts. It also likely raised the anxiety levels of administration officials, who have been striving to promote booster uptake this fall. Some officials described the president’s comment as surprising.

“We still have a problem with COVID. We’re still doing a lot of work on it,” Biden immediately noted in the interview. “But the pandemic is over. If you notice, no one’s wearing masks,” he said, referencing the crowds at the auto show in Detroit, where he made the comments. “Everybody seems to be in pretty good shape. And, so I think it’s changing and I think this is a perfect example of it.”

Though many in the public health community will argue that the pandemic is objectively not over, the president’s remarks reflect the country’s relationship status with the pandemic, which is a resounding: “It’s complicated.”

Kia is apparently feeling confident enough in the early sales figures of its new Stinger sedan to be mulling ideas for future variants of its GT-inspired fastback. The brand’s North American product planner tells AutoGuide it wants to keep the nameplate’s lineup fresh with frequent updates and additions.

“The reaction has been phenomenal to (the Stinger),” Orth Hedrick, Kia North America product planner, told AutoGuide. “We’re doing great, we have a very high mix of buyers, a lot coming from Optima, so we’re looking to see if we can grow that. And I think there might be other opportunities down the road.” He added that it was still early in the product’s lifecycle and that the brand will wait to amass more data from consumers before building out the Stinger lineup.

“We’re going to be very aggressive for the lifecycle of this vehicle,” Hedrick added, “we’re going to be very aggressive with the colors. It’s a fashion statement. You have to keep the car going with powertrain variants and other stuff coming down the road.”

Through March, Kia has sold 3,920 Stingers in the U.S., including 1,555 in March alone and not including the 843 it sold in late 2017. That’s a fraction of the 50,645 vehicles Kia sold overall during the month, and it puts Kia on pace to sell nearly 16,000 for the full year.

It’s hard to independently assess whether that should be seen as a successful mark for a performance sedan that starts at $ 32,795 for the standard 255-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder, much lower than many of the German competitors it’s established as benchmarks. Hendrick last year told Wards the Stinger was intended to increase both sales and brand recognition and was aimed squarely at auto enthusiasts. Its U.S. sales are slightly above those of the Alfa Romeo Giulia, which has sold 3,085 through March (this Stinger owners forum thread also offers some interesting guesstimates). And as long as Kia is pleased …

Anyway, if Kia wants to release variants, we’re totally cool with that. It’s already announced the limited-edition Atlantica, and we’re down with more colors and maybe a manual transmission. And while they’re at it, why not borrow the 5.0-liter V8 from the Korean version of the K900?

There’s no use paying for something you don’t need on a new BMW, even if nobody “needs” a new BMW. To sweeten the deal on its latest crossovers, BMW is offering two-wheel-drive versions of its X2 and X3, a move that effectively lowers starting prices.

At their debut, both the X2 and X3 were available only in xDrive all-wheel-drive form. Now, the sDrive version—front-wheel drive on the Mini-platform-based X2, rear-wheel drive on the X3—is the base trim. The 2018 X2 sDrive28i starts at $ 37,395, which is $ 2000 less than the xDrive28i. (It also brings the X2 closer to the X1; it’s now $ 2500 extra instead of $ 4500.)

The EPA hasn’t published fuel-economy ratings for these new variants, but we wouldn’t expect more than a 1- or 2-mpg gain in both city and highway tests. But when the X3 diesel returns—likely in xDrive form—the gains will be more substantial.

Electric car sales are on the rise. Nearly every mainstream automaker has or is working on a fully-electric vehicle to meet ever-increasing customer demands. Porsche’s first foray into the full-electric camp is the upcoming Mission E, a performance sedan with its sights aimed squarely at Tesla. According to Autocar, demand is up so much for electrified vehicles that Porsche is expanding the scope of the Mission E and will offer several variants when the car goes on sale with a different, still-to-be-determined name in either 2019 or 2020.

Worldwide, the Panamera E-Hybrid makes up 60 percent of that model’s sales. In Scandinavia, that number jumps to 90 percent. Demand is only going to grow as different regions begin to offer tax incentives and other bonuses for driving electric or electrified vehicles. Porsche is pivoting, setting up the Mission E to reach an even wider audience than originally predicted. Porsche wants to sell 20,000 Mission E sedans each year. Considering the success of cars like the Tesla Model S, it doesn’t seem like that far of a stretch.

The Mission E is the first all-new model line since the Macan was introduced in 2014. While range is important, Porsche is focused on performance first and foremost. It will leverage EV strengths like torque and a low center-of-gravity. Two electric motors – one at each axle – will give the car all-wheel drive and should help the car compete favorably against the competition at Tesla. The Mission E concept produced 600 horsepower and 663 pound-feet of torque.

That said, the production Mission E is expected to get about 310 miles of range on a single charge. Additionally, the car will have an 800V rapid-charging system that will give the car an 80-percent charge in just 15 minutes. Porsche is working with Hitachi on the technology. A bigger battery would give the car a longer range, but it would also add a lot of weight. Since performance is paramount, range is being slightly sacrificed. More variants are expected that vary both overall range and performance. That, too, mirrors Tesla’s Model S strategy.

Solid state batteries could also be in the Mission E’s future, though that is still a long way off. Solid state batteries are lighter and more compact than today’s lithium-ion units, helping alleviate one of the biggest hurdles facing electric cars.

The production Mission E, or whatever it will eventually be called, is expected to start around $ 85,000, or about as much as an entry-level Panamera. For reference, a Tesla Model S 75D starts around $ 75,000 before subtracting any tax benefits or incentives.

The great thing about talking to senior executives at auto companies is that they know considerably more than their PR minders do. And sometimes, if you get the right exec on the right day, they’re prepared to talk about things the spin doctors would advise against revealing.

We suspect that Peter Mertens, new head of development at Audi, is going to prove to be one of those executives whom journalists like to seek out. The refreshingly candid German (who was heading up R&D at Volvo last year) isn’t going to casually reveal Audi’s five-year plan. But he is happy to drop some fascinating clues about where the brand is heading, especially when it comes to electric mobility.

The one thing seemingly missing from the plans for a family of pure electric e-tron models is a range-topping halo model. That omission is made more obvious by the fact that, in the R8 e-tron (pictured above), Audi previously produced an electron-driven sports car, but only briefly. The good news is that it’s a gap Mertens seems to be both aware of and keen to fill.

“You can very well imagine that at some point we will have an electric supercar,” he told journalists at the 2017 Formula E race in Berlin. “The question is, ‘Would I like to make it happen sooner?’ and the answer is, ‘Yes, of course.’ It is part of our plan. We’re not going to talk about that today, but I can tell you that for a brand like Audi, a supercar is always interesting, and it’s a segment in which we have been playing, we have been a very serious player.”

The previous R8 e-tron stands as inspiration here, but also as a cautionary tale. The project was canceled by Wolfgang Durheimer during his brief period as head of R&D for Audi, before being resurrected by Ulrich Hackenberg, one of the senior executives to have left the company in the wake of the Dieselgate scandal.

The production e-tron was built in tiny numbers and sold for only 19 months while technical limitations meant that—uniquely among Audi’s recent performance road cars—it was rear-wheel drive only.

The move to create distinct e-tron models rather than simply electric versions of existing cars means we can safely anticipate any future EV supercar won’t just be an R8 with a different propulsion system. It also likely will feature a high-performance 800-volt charging system in place of the 400-volt systems of lesser e-Audis, like the fast-charging system that Porsche is developing for the production version of the Mission-E concept.

“800-volt puts a significant extra cost on the bill. We need to evaluate whether customers will be prepared to pay that,” Mertens admitted. “In segments like super sports cars, it will be yes, no doubt about it.”

Mertens also said that Audi is likely to make hotter S and even RS versions of e-tron models, but he also said it seems likely that hybrid assistance will feature on the next generation of its internal-combustion performance cars.

“It could definitely be a part,” Mertens said. “We believe in that technology, specifically in regard to performance. Is plug-in technology a bridge? Yes, it is, but it’s also a fantastic technology for really delivering performance.”
