NOT long ago China was a leading culprit in global economic imbalances. Whether blame was ascribed to its undervalued yuan or its frugal people, the problem seemed clear. China was selling a lot abroad and buying too little back. One data-point summed this up: its currentaccount surplus reached 10% of GDP in 2007, well above the level that is generally seen as reasonable. Far less attention has been paid to its steady decline since then. In the first quarter of 2018 China ran a current-account deficit, its first since joining the World Trade Organisation in 2001. Just as its massive surpluses of yore had big consequences for the global economy, so does this swing in the opposite direction.

China still exports many more goods than it imports, to the tune of nearly $ 500bn annually. But its share of global exports appears to have peaked. At the same time its trade deficit in services is getting bigger, largely thanks to all its tourists venturing abroad (see chart).

At bottom, a current-…

  • Three blockchain experts linked to an illegitimate startup called Prodeum told Business Insider they have nothing to do with the organization and are victims of identity theft.
  • The startup, Prodeum, raised $ 11 in an online fundraiser before disappearing on Sunday.
  • Prodeum’s website went blank late Sunday aside for the text “penis” in the upper-left corner.

Three blockchain experts linked to a bizarre cryptocurrency startup that sought to raise $ 6.5 million before vanishing have told Business Insider that they are victims of identity theft and have nothing to do with the company.

The startup, called Prodeum, had billed itself as a developing a system to use blockchain technology for agricultural commodities, like fruits and vegetables.

But Prodeum caused waves online Sunday evening after trying to sell tokens to investors through a risky fundraising technique and subsequently disappearing from the web, leaving only the word “penis” on its homepage.

In the end, the company appears to have raised only an almost comical grand total of $ 11 from investors in its initial coin offering, or ICO. But the bizarre incident highlights the chaos and risks lurking in the unregulated world of cryptocurrencies, as well as some of the unexpected dangers that are likely to become more common as interest in cryptocurrencies continues to surge.

Darius Rugevicius, Vytautas Kaseta, and Mario Pazos were all listed as team members or advisors on TokenDesk fundraising page for Prodeum.

While fake founders are a common trait among questionable cryptocurrency startups, Rugevicius, Kaseta, and Pazos all actually work with blockchain startups. All three expressed concern to Business Insider that the Prodeum scam could have an negative impact on their reputations.

Their photos and names were posted on the original website, along with links to active LinkedIn profiles. A fourth team member, Petar Jandric, does not appear to be linked to a real person.

All traces of Prodeum, a startup on the Ethereum blockchain, have been wiped from the internet, and its homepage now redirects to an anonymous Twitter account.

‘It could be some Russian based scammers. But we can’t confirm this yet.’

Rugevicius, a general partner at Connect Capital in New York, was at the airport Monday morning on his way to South Korea for a conference hosted by the blockchain company ICON.

“I have personally worked with number of most prominent projects in blockchain field and certainly have no ties with this project,” Rugevicius told Business Insider.

Pazos, a Miami-based blockchain startup advisor and angel investor, said he didn’t know about Prodeum until he was contacted for this story. He advises the blockchain startups WaBi Project and Kairos, and is closely involved with both of their ICOs.

An ICO is an unregulated fundraising technique used by blockchain companies where cyptocurrencies like bitcoin and ethereum are used to purchase “tokens” from a startup. In theory, the tokens will be valuable if the company takes off, though many people buy random digital tokens in the hopes that they can trade them like stocks.

Though he said he hasn’t thought much about scams until this happened to him, Pazos said that he takes the legitimacy of the companies that he works with very seriously, and has turned away clients that he didn’t feel confident would succeed in the space.

“We run a very thorough due diligence process and interview with the CEO and their team. In fact, we have face to face interactions. I make sure that they’re legitimate companies,” Pezos said, adding that he also looks at companies’ financials to make sure they are not struggling to make ends meet.

Kaseta, a Lithuania-based blockchain engineer and advisor, said he and Rugevicius are looking into taking legal action against the alleged scammers. He also said he is working with the crypto community to find the people behind the Prodeum.

“From the first information, looks like it could be some Russian based scammers. But we can’t confirm this yet,” Kaseta said.

Though Prodeum ultimately raised just $ 11, the company originally set out to raise 5,400 ether, or $ 6.5 million. The project goal was to “bring fruits and vegetables to the blockchain.” It may sound silly, but tracking produce from farm to store is one of the more practical uses of blockchain technology, with companies like IBM and Walmart partnering on similar projects.

Millions of Western dollars meant to save ‘lost generation’ of Syrians vanished – HRW https://briefnews.eu/millions-of-western-dollars-meant-to-save-lost-generation-of-syrians-vanished-hrw/ https://briefnews.eu/millions-of-western-dollars-meant-to-save-lost-generation-of-syrians-vanished-hrw/#respond Fri, 15 Sep 2017 16:51:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/millions-of-western-dollars-meant-to-save-lost-generation-of-syrians-vanished-hrw/ Millions of dollars pledged by the international community to pay for the education of Syrian refugee children has gone missing, according to an investigation by Human Rights Watch (HRW).

In 2016, a conference in London attended by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, as well as David Cameron and John Kerry, then-UK prime minister and US secretary of state, respectively, pledged $ 1.4 billion to help over 1.5 million displaced Syrian children go to school to prevent the emergence of a “lost generation.” The six largest donors were the European Union, the US, Germany, the United Kingdom, Norway, and Japan, and the money was due to go to Turkey, Jordan, and Lebanon – the three countries hosting the most Syrian refugees.

The HRW investigation found “large discrepancies” between the money that was pledged and what was actually received by the host countries.

“Donors and host countries have promised that Syrian children will not become a lost generation, but this is exactly what is happening,” said the report’s author, Simon Rau. “More transparency in funding would help reveal the needs that aren’t being met so they could be addressed and get children into school.”

According to HRW, most of the money that was supposed to be used to buy books, hire teachers, and plan curriculums only reached the hosting countries after the school year started, which was too late for it to enroll many of the children. By early September 2016, Jordan faced a $ 171mn shortfall and Lebanon $ 181mn. Although the funds slowly trickled in, Jordan still had a $ 41mn budget gap by the end of the year, and Lebanon $ 97mn.

Meanwhile, the UN agencies working with Syrian refugees in Turkey only received $ 111mn out of the $ 137mn they requested in 2016.

“Despite global concern about Syrian refugee children, it is still impossible to find answers to basic questions about whether their key educational needs are being met,” said Rau. “Donors should fix the transparency deficit that is undercutting their own support for Syrian children, who cannot afford to wait any longer to get back into school.”

Explanations of where the money had gone varied from country to country. Only the UK and Germany published transparent reports of what they had done with the money. The US Agency for International Development (USAID) said not all of the money it pledged had gone towards schooling, but all of it had been accounted for.

“Clarity about aid can help pinpoint the reasons why, despite donor support, hundreds of thousands of Syrian children still lack access to education,” the report said.

Other problems identified by HRW include poorly-trained teachers, harassment and discrimination at school, and widespread poverty, which makes classes unaffordable and puts pressure on boys to work and girls to marry. As of the 2016-2017 school year, over 530,000 Syrian children have not been able to attend classes.

Russia has been providing humanitarian aid on the ground directly to affected areas in Syria. Earlier in September, the Russian Center for Reconciliation of Opposing Sides in Syria sent food aid and living essentials, including water purification stations, portable diesel generators, medicine, and bottled water, to the besieged city of Deir ez-Zor after it was liberated from Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) in a joint operation with Syrian forces.

A key short-term boost for stocks has vanished for the first time in 17 years https://briefnews.eu/a-key-short-term-boost-for-stocks-has-vanished-for-the-first-time-in-17-years/ https://briefnews.eu/a-key-short-term-boost-for-stocks-has-vanished-for-the-first-time-in-17-years/#respond Tue, 01 Aug 2017 01:44:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-key-short-term-boost-for-stocks-has-vanished-for-the-first-time-in-17-years/ new york stock exchange traders computer screens chartsREUTERS/Lucas Jackson

Traders have not been this unresponsive to earnings announcements in nearly two decades.

The rate of earnings beats in the second quarter is above its five-year average, at 73% of S&P 500 companies that reported through Friday according to FactSet. Corporate America is also giving less negative guidance about the third quarter than usual.

But this kind of topline earnings performance is not impressing Wall Street and moving the market like it used to. For the first time in 17 years, there are no short-term rewards for topping earnings forecasts, according to Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

Companies that beat on earnings per share and sales have traded in line with the market the next day and over the following five, BAML said in a note on Monday. However, those that miss have been punished. They’ve underperformed the market by three percentage points over the next day, and five percentage points over the next five.

“Investors may be honing in on other sources of guidance like net interest income, subscribers, volumes, etc,” said a BAML team of equity and quant strategists led by Savita Subramanian in a note on Monday.

“Reactions based on earnings guidance have also been muted: companies with positive 2017 EPS revisions (in excess of the 2Q beat) performed in-line with the S&P over the next one and five days vs.underperformance of ~1p pt for those with estimate cuts, though spreads were wider on revisions to 2018 EPS.” The S&P 500 is up 1.8% since July 11, when PepsiCo kicked off earnings season for the largest companies.

Buy the rumor, sell the news

The rally in stocks this year, despite gridlock in Washington over healthcare and tax reform, suggests that investors were already expecting a second-straight quarter of profits growth.

One sign of this expectation is that as earnings season approached, analysts made fewer and smaller cuts to their estimates than they usually do, according to Deutsche Bank.

And so, earnings surprises are not that surprising. Combined with low inflation and sluggish changes to interest rates, earnings growth was a pillar of the bullish thesis for stocks that drove the market to new highs.

Chris Harvey, a senior analyst at Wells Fargo, found that large caps are bearing the brunt of Wall Street’s muted reaction to earnings outperformance. Post-earnings release, large-cap companies that beat on EPS have underperformed the S&P 500 by -0.32%. But similar companies on the small-cap Russell 2000 index have outperformed the market by 1.77%.

“We believe the relative outperformance by large caps has raised the bar too high and is likely contributing to the ‘sell the news’ dynamic as compared to smaller caps,” Harvey wrote in a note on Monday.
